After struggling with injury in his debut season for Man United, the stage seemed set for Luke Shaw to establish himself as a regular under Louis van Gaal last time around.

Limited to just 15 starts in 2014/15 after arriving from Southampton for around £30m, the left-back had finally proven his fitness in time for the start of the previous campaign.

Handed a spot in the Dutchman’s XI, Shaw’s raids down the left were a feature of the Red Devils’ first five league matches and earned him 27 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, courtesy of an assist, three clean sheets and four bonus points.

A broken leg sustained against PSV in mid-September brought an end to that early promise and sidelined Shaw for the rest of the season.

Having averaged 5.4 points per appearance, it was a case of “what could have been” for the former Saint, as United proceeded to rack up 18 clean sheets and concede just 35 times.

The Prospects

Encouragingly, Shaw – who is priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – has stepped up his injury recovery over the summer period and started all four of United’s pre-season friendlies.

A strong performance in last night’s draw with Everton had the local press purring and his return to fitness has been duly noted by FPL managers, with over 16% snapping up the full-back, making him the seventh most popular defender on the market.

Although this will be Shaw’s fifth year in the top-flight, the youngster has only managed one full season so far – his breakthrough campaign for Southampton in 2013/14.

The left-back managed just two assists across 35 appearances that term, with a total of 123 points not overly convincing.

Delving into the underlying data for that season shows just why United were keen to splash the cash the following summer.

Shaw’s forages forward to join in the Saints’ attacks saw him ranked third amongst defenders for touches in the final third, whilst only Seamus Coleman made more successful dribbles (64 to 56).

His delivery from out wide also caught the eye. Shaw sat second for both crosses and successful crosses from the back and was placed fifth when it came to key passes, with 33.

In terms of goal threat, the numbers are again very encouraging. Although he failed to score with any of his 24 attempts, Shaw’s total of ten shots on target was bettered by only three other defenders.

Should he steer clear of injury, then, there’s cause for optimism that Shaw could play a significant part in the Fantasy season ahead, offering real potential for points at both ends of the pitch.

Certainly, we can expect him to be handed greater license to forage forward under Mourinho as United move away from Van Gaal’s possession-based approach.

When assessing United’s defence, it would be remiss to ignore the form of Antonio Valencia – identically priced at 5.5, he provided three assists in the recent win over Galatasaray.

It’s no secret, though, that Mourinho was a big fan of Shaw and attempted to sign him for Chelsea prior to the defender’s Old Trafford switch. Arguably, that makes the left-back berth the more secure option, with Matteo Darmian pushing Valencia for minutes on the opposite flank.

Starting 11 nice. Bench a bit weak. Tadic is giving me headaches I will have him for most of the season but such mixed fixtures at the start. Might go Alli or Lamela instead for now.

Have Lukaku only if he stays. Terry may not start regularly if Chelsea signs a new CB. Not totally sure on that, as Cahill may also be the one to get benched. But Zouma's speedy recovery suggests both of them would be dethroned eventually.

Even if he was in contention, he would still have to fight the likes of Matic, Fabregas for a spot in the mid. Kante taking the other one. But this is if we are playing 424.

If its 433, his odds increases to be in the team and I think he will be in that formation. All depends on who we are going to sign. If we sign another striker, its a 424 absolutely certain.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Snodgrass as the cheaper midfield option (£5.5) Good player, wicked left foot for FKs and long shots, takes set pieces, will even take penalties when Hernandez is absent. Would expect him to score a solid 5 goals and even more assists over the season.

On the watchlist. Although i've never really rated him much, but he is direct with more end product than Deo and he is very selfish which is always good in fpl.

Then again, who ever really knows with Koeman. This is the guy who benched Tadic and Mane for weeks on end, very frustrating

From an Fpl point of view the guy is gold. Good end product largley thanks to his selfish play as you say.

Koeman factor bit worrying. No European football at Everton though and atm they really don't have anyone else to play LW.

Anyone looking to play AOA first matchday?
The chip has been useless last time out. Hard to figure which defense are going to pay off from the start and which 4.5 are nailed. So, might be a decent idea having a slightly strong front 8 from the get go. With so many cheap mids in the game, you could upgrade Capoue/4.5 to say a Feghouli(5.5), Bojan(6.0), Redmond(6.0), Fischer(5.5) or anything you find worth the 5.5/6.0. You could easily kick them out later and have added budget as well. However, if you are planning to have a strong back with three 5.5/5.0 defenders, I wouldn't recommend this.

    1. Scratch
      • 16 Years

Nah, will save it in case I ever hit a weekend where 3 of my defenders are injured or doubtful. The chip really is almost worthless

GW 5 might be good for it a lot of stronger teams at home to "weaker" teams. It's total luck with that chip though, it is pretty much worthless. As said above the best use might be saving a -4 when a defender is injured short term.

      1. Grand Thibauto
        • 11 Years

You would probably have those stronger team defense by GW5. Yeah, that is the intended use I guess.

Yes I am looking to use it, here's my thinking.

1.) The way the pricing is this season, if you want some big hitters, you will have to suffer a dead 5th midfield spot.

2.) We are technically on a wildcard now so can build a front 8 for it and structure a defence to rotate through the start to get you to a wildcard to clean it up.

3.) Pointless saving it incase you get injuries, you could get injuries in defence while you have suspensions or poor fixtures in your front 8.

4.) A lot of the big players you will want areally suspect for GW1 due to either difficult fixtures or being late back to training after the Euros so they may not play anyway, a good chance to tap into the value in midfield to get good use out of the chip.

5.) It's a useless chip that will hinder your squad and thinking while you have it a's you will always be thinking about making sure you have money in all 8 positions to get the full use of it as it's no good to anyone with Darren Fletcher as part of the front 8.

This year it seems the only sensible opportunity where you can dictate the strength of team for using it.

That can't be ignored, potential for 9 point weeks for a CS, that's the same as a striker getting a goal and bonus.

Strong defenders cost 5.5, strong strikers cost 9+

Hard to say how much it really changes things. I still think attackers will dominate bps with defenders gettings baps in low scoring games with CS's. This was already happening a lot last season.

It's all about compromise isn't it?

Nothing wrong with going big upfront if you're realistic about getting the most out of the rest of the budget, if you can't have a huge midfield due to the huge strikeforce then what's the next best (affordable) thing?

Hart and Evans, same coverage, same spend, less doubts.

How much do folks reckon Llorente will be? £6.5m or less and he's straight in my team. £7m would also be tempting

Would you double up with Siggy or Ayew for those first fixtures or too much?

Personally I would, and i'd have Naylor. Swansea always seem to start well and see off the weaker sides.

If Ayew stayed it would be tempting, no one has better fixtures at the start.

At £6.0m - a consideration. At £6.5m - wouldn't have him ahead of other £6.5m options (Long/Austin, Carroll, Gray, Negredo, Wilson).

I'm going for two £6.5m forwards. Austin and Gray currently but concerned Austin might not be guaranteed his start

I don't mind the x2 £6.5m FWD strategy. Will allow for a stacked MID. I would probably still have Siggy/Ayew as a Swansea pick - ahead of Llorente.

Any opinions on this starting squad?

    Foster
    Shaw / Friend / Morgan
    Hazard / Fletcher / Tadic / Martial
    Kane / Gray / Aguero

    Jakupovic / Pieters / Feghouli / Francis

    Thoughts?

Fletcher is only going to get 2 points, may as well play Feghouli no? Otherwise I like it

that's one of the best ive seen.Def's rotate etc.My only suggestion might be:
      Martial> Eriksen +1.0 Jaku>Heaton Feg>Redmond.

Cheers mate. Playing all the way from Australia so it's a little hard to keep track of who is hot or not.

I have had Erikson in my team up until last night but i'd prefer Kane as the sole Spur points scorer, he will have a massive season. Also i like Martial playing behind Ibrahimovic. I think he will clean up.

I am a Hammers fan and i really like the look of Feghouli in the mids to swap with Fletcher.

        Who knows!

There have been analysis somewhere that without Dembele, Kane is not as effective. Maybe someone here can point out further.

Heaton rotates with Foster and is more likely to get pts. 150--in his last season in PL.
Daniels is no longer on pens.> Francis+.5 or Morgan
rest looks good, I'm hoping Long becomes nailed. IMO GL

What do we think of the City defence overall? New managers with new ideas doesn't bode well for a settled defence? Though perhaps end of defenders holing there line stoopidly far out

Slightly worried about Kane after a rough Euros and last years slow start for him. Hoping it wont happen again and that he's goal hungry after the euros.

    Shaw / Souare / Pieters / Friend / Paredes
    Hazard / Eriksen / Tadic / Sigurdsson / Bolasie

    Opinions? 🙂

Tadic is always a tough one. Fowards are nice but good looks, and the defense seems a little weak maybe too loaded in mid/ attack

Mourinho understood the nature of modern managers so didn't bother developing youth that would only benefit the next manager that comes along. Now manager at united with suitable assurances over his tenure will tranform into a different animal

Baines, if still on FKs/PKs, is a great shout. If not I might actually prefer Coleman. Currently on Valencia, VVD, Terry.

I'm not sure about VVD, Southampton aren't as good defensively as ManU/Chelsea/Everton/Spurs

Got United and Chelsea cover for now. I agree that Spurs are a better unit defensively but I feel like any CS for Southampton is a minimum of an extra +2 for VVD.

maybe, but VVD and Walker ended up with about the same BPS last season, and spurs have a much better run of fixtures. I'll probably just go with Valencia and Terry though for that ManU/Chelsea cover...
