After struggling with injury in his debut season for Man United, the stage seemed set for Luke Shaw to establish himself as a regular under Louis van Gaal last time around.

Limited to just 15 starts in 2014/15 after arriving from Southampton for around £30m, the left-back had finally proven his fitness in time for the start of the previous campaign.

Handed a spot in the Dutchman’s XI, Shaw’s raids down the left were a feature of the Red Devils’ first five league matches and earned him 27 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, courtesy of an assist, three clean sheets and four bonus points.

A broken leg sustained against PSV in mid-September brought an end to that early promise and sidelined Shaw for the rest of the season.

Having averaged 5.4 points per appearance, it was a case of “what could have been” for the former Saint, as United proceeded to rack up 18 clean sheets and concede just 35 times.

The Prospects

Encouragingly, Shaw – who is priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – has stepped up his injury recovery over the summer period and started all four of United’s pre-season friendlies.

A strong performance in last night’s draw with Everton had the local press purring and his return to fitness has been duly noted by FPL managers, with over 16% snapping up the full-back, making him the seventh most popular defender on the market.

Although this will be Shaw’s fifth year in the top-flight, the youngster has only managed one full season so far – his breakthrough campaign for Southampton in 2013/14.

The left-back managed just two assists across 35 appearances that term, with a total of 123 points not overly convincing.

Delving into the underlying data for that season shows just why United were keen to splash the cash the following summer.

Shaw’s forages forward to join in the Saints’ attacks saw him ranked third amongst defenders for touches in the final third, whilst only Seamus Coleman made more successful dribbles (64 to 56).

His delivery from out wide also caught the eye. Shaw sat second for both crosses and successful crosses from the back and was placed fifth when it came to key passes, with 33.

In terms of goal threat, the numbers are again very encouraging. Although he failed to score with any of his 24 attempts, Shaw’s total of ten shots on target was bettered by only three other defenders.

Should he steer clear of injury, then, there’s cause for optimism that Shaw could play a significant part in the Fantasy season ahead, offering real potential for points at both ends of the pitch.

Certainly, we can expect him to be handed greater license to forage forward under Mourinho as United move away from Van Gaal’s possession-based approach.

When assessing United’s defence, it would be remiss to ignore the form of Antonio Valencia – identically priced at 5.5, he provided three assists in the recent win over Galatasaray.

It’s no secret, though, that Mourinho was a big fan of Shaw and attempted to sign him for Chelsea prior to the defender’s Old Trafford switch. Arguably, that makes the left-back berth the more secure option, with Matteo Darmian pushing Valencia for minutes on the opposite flank.

    Thoughts on this lot:

    Foster | Jaku
    Shaw | Otamendi | Coleman | Friend | Smith
    Hazard | Redmond | Mirallas | Ramirez | Townsend
    Ibra | Kun | Gray

    Can do Otamendi + Townsend > Silva/Mahrez + 4.0 Def

      And upgrade 6.5

Ramirez has 0 goals in his last 38 league/international games so you might as well get Höjbjerg or another £4.5m. Mirallas is a troll though I'm usually lucky with my Everton picks. Redmond may not start. Poor midfield in general. I'd suggest downgrading the defence to upgrade it but I'd also stay away from £4ms.

I think Redmond is pretty certain to start but I agree with everything else, midfield is far too weak

        Why would Redmond not start?

He's been a key player in pre season and the manager has been talking up his quality in attack.

He's also had a full pre season so his fitness levels will be leading the way as oposed to some who may have come back late.

Defence weak. Ok they have nice fixtures at the start be surprised if any got more that 100 points in the season. Think 1 of the 4 big hitters upfront need to downgrade. Just my opinion the front 7 can't make up the points that you need to compete.

Hey guys no idea what to do this season no doubt will be an early wildcard when the teams settle down and get some idea for now gone purely on the first lot of fixtures and starting with this gw1.. Rmt please..

    Foster ( Jak )
    Terry Friend Pieters VVD souare
Hazard KDB Townsend ( Deulofeu Fletcher)
    Aguero Ibra ( Grabban )

    1. LazFC

Looks good so far. Although, I would still have Deul on instead of one of those defenders.

One of the better Kun/Ibra teams I've seen. I'm going the 2 big boys upfront too.

      RMT:

      Cech (Jakup)
Terry | Walker | Stones | Friend (Fernandez)
      Hazard | Lamela | Siggy | Fischer (Capoue/Fletcher/4.5)
      Aguero (C) | Ibra | Gray

      Thoughts?

I like yours i was looking at stones as well with the city move in the works as well and there fixtures

Personally i dont rate Lamela at all, Rumours on here that siggy wont start? Could maybe save some money and downgrade cech? But i like it..

I tried to get away from Ibra but i have a feeling he will explode..

        1. LazFC

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, even if Stones doesn't go, he has great fixtures after GW1.

I'm not the biggest fan of him either, but he has his moments, and has that flare that could catch out some less than sharp defenders hahah. My first choice would be Eriksen but not enough funds to keep the Kun/Ibra combo.

Why is Siggy doubtful? Injuries or just not favoured? He is a weapon!

I would downgrade Cech, but I want Arsenal coverage in defence and he is cheaper than most of the defenders in front of him.

I would downgrade KDB and upgrade fletcher. Gives the 352 option which should be better than 442 or please no 532. You should get 3 decent defenders out each week from the 5 you have now.

Please be critical especially in relation to possible non starters. Not sure whether to start Tadic and have 1 Itb to go Ayew > Alli in gw3 or just have Alli and Ayew from start. Tadic fixtures very mixed. Also limited in upgrading to premium mids or forwards without hits. Thanks.

    Foster Valdes
    Rose Shaw Funes VVD Smith
    Hazard Alli Ayew Mirallas Fischer
    Kun Musa Gray

Solid side, mate. You may have some serious benching headaches come starting XI selection time.

I would be inclined to say stick with your gut - start with Alli (or Eriksen - personal preference but I would start with Eriksen).

Forward line extremely weak. Would be reasonable if you had 5 solid mids (8.0+) but you don't.

Dilute the defence to get a second striker (Kane/ Vardy/ Lukaku)

Thanks see your point. I am essentially spend a lot on defence for a Funes / VVD rotation. Think it might work but it is expensive. Thoughts on 13 or 14 of the current lot starting.

Instead of rotating Funes/ VVD maybe rotate their team's keepers. Might end up cheaper and release funds for better outfield players??

Funes was the first defender on my team, hasn't left yet - I'm not sure when Jags is back but I'm pretty confident that Stones will depart for City - think that was the reason they were trying to bring Williams in. I'm going to keep him until the second last day of the deadline and if nothing has changed, will probably upgrade him to Coleman/Baines

If the Swans signs an attacker, I don't see Ayew as a nice prospect anymore..
Ppl going for Ayew because he'll be playing upfront.

I'd go Siggy.. but frankly doubling Swansea cover with all the quality around, I would prefer looking for cover from other teams.

I feel Man Utd will be a better team thanks to the power upfront and produce more entertaining games like 4-2s, 5-3s etc. But will have a leaky defence because of it. Arsenal get boring to watch for the most part, but they score and hold their clean sheet.
Plus, I think Arsenal defence has had more experience together than current Utd defence. Just my 2 cents

ManU have much easier fixtures to start though

I was planning more for long term. Over the past few seasons I'll choose a top 4 GK (CHE, ARS, MCI, MUN) + a 4.0 and stick with them throughout the campaign unless seriously injured. I've found rotating two budget GKs extremely annoying especially when your benched GK keeps a CS hahha

For me Arsenal start with iffy fixtures and a defensive crisis. Better option from GW3-4 imo.

    Hi guys
Just going through some of the RMT's and noticed that barely anyone is going for Fabregas. Do you think he will play deeper under Conte ?

also thoughts on cuadrado and sane ?

I think Fab would sit deeper in Conte's structure. However, he is an assisting machine from anywhere he plays. I wanted Hazard in my squad so didn't want to double up. If I didn't have Hazard I would take a punt on Cesc. At 7.5 why not??

There is a really long post about 3 pages back going into Chelsea possible setups in huge detail. Have a read. Sane really a doubt for me. Something has to give with KDB Silva and Sane.

Anyone going with uber cheap bench? Early wildcard wouldn't bother me.

    Courtois
    Coleman Shaw Van Dijk
    Firmino Sanchez Redmond Hazard
    Aguero Gray Negredo
    Jakupovic Leko Lenihan Smith

I don't know you would want to be pretty sure on the 11 starting. Lenihan coming in could be a minus figure.

Yeah looking at it now not sure I like it. Who to drop. May do Firmino to Ayew and upgrade Leko

Or change Leko to a certain 4.5 starter - look at Watford.

      Ramirez

      At £5.5m - Ramirez/Fischer, Feghouli, Gradel/Ibe, Albrighton
      At £5.0m - Routledge

I think Kouyaté could be a great pick @ £5.5m price bracket- especially if he's given license to push furthest forward of the central midfielders.
        I.e.
        ----Noble ---- Nordviedt----
        ---------Kouyaté---------
        Feghouli--------Payet
        ---------Carroll---------

I got him in last season when he was on a run, but he was dropped. Too much rotation in Hammer's midfield.

Kind of torn between kouyate or feghouli, depending on how feghoili will be given minutes

For GW1 okay, but after that Lanzini will return from the Olympics and Tore may be fit. By the West Ham may have bought Andre Ayew and even Jordan Ayew. Too crowded!

This I really liked Lanzini towards the end of last season could be nice at 6.5 when he is back. Factor in Antonio too if not playing at the back. Very crowded midfield.

I think you're going to hate it when Ibra doesn't score and your defense + GK don't get good numbers every week.

Exactly my thoughts too tho but will take chances the first gameweeks. If it doesn't work then downgrade ibra and upgrade gk/defense

I reckon Smith (Bou) has a 50/50 chance of starting regularly.
Wazza (Lei) may play GW1 only.
Lenihan may get games but .... Hull.
No idea why Parades (Wat) is so popular.

Not Downing. Ramirez looks the most likely suspect to me due to last season form. Fischer has been hot in pre-season.

Hey all, need some advice from you knowledgeable people.

    I'm currently on:

    Mandanda, Jaku
    Fernandez, Friend, Evans, Francis, Morgan
    Hazard, Eriksen, Tadic, Siggy, Hojbjerg
    Aguero, Kane, Long

Worth downgrading Tadic to Ramirez and using the spare 2.0m to upgrade my defence?
