Pre-Season

After struggling with injury in his debut season for Man United, the stage seemed set for Luke Shaw to establish himself as a regular under Louis van Gaal last time around.

Limited to just 15 starts in 2014/15 after arriving from Southampton for around £30m, the left-back had finally proven his fitness in time for the start of the previous campaign.

Handed a spot in the Dutchman’s XI, Shaw’s raids down the left were a feature of the Red Devils’ first five league matches and earned him 27 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, courtesy of an assist, three clean sheets and four bonus points.

A broken leg sustained against PSV in mid-September brought an end to that early promise and sidelined Shaw for the rest of the season.

Having averaged 5.4 points per appearance, it was a case of “what could have been” for the former Saint, as United proceeded to rack up 18 clean sheets and concede just 35 times.

The Prospects

Encouragingly, Shaw – who is priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – has stepped up his injury recovery over the summer period and started all four of United’s pre-season friendlies.

A strong performance in last night’s draw with Everton had the local press purring and his return to fitness has been duly noted by FPL managers, with over 16% snapping up the full-back, making him the seventh most popular defender on the market.

Although this will be Shaw’s fifth year in the top-flight, the youngster has only managed one full season so far – his breakthrough campaign for Southampton in 2013/14.

The left-back managed just two assists across 35 appearances that term, with a total of 123 points not overly convincing.

Delving into the underlying data for that season shows just why United were keen to splash the cash the following summer.

Shaw’s forages forward to join in the Saints’ attacks saw him ranked third amongst defenders for touches in the final third, whilst only Seamus Coleman made more successful dribbles (64 to 56).

His delivery from out wide also caught the eye. Shaw sat second for both crosses and successful crosses from the back and was placed fifth when it came to key passes, with 33.

In terms of goal threat, the numbers are again very encouraging. Although he failed to score with any of his 24 attempts, Shaw’s total of ten shots on target was bettered by only three other defenders.

Should he steer clear of injury, then, there’s cause for optimism that Shaw could play a significant part in the Fantasy season ahead, offering real potential for points at both ends of the pitch.

Certainly, we can expect him to be handed greater license to forage forward under Mourinho as United move away from Van Gaal’s possession-based approach.

When assessing United’s defence, it would be remiss to ignore the form of Antonio Valencia – identically priced at 5.5, he provided three assists in the recent win over Galatasaray.

It’s no secret, though, that Mourinho was a big fan of Shaw and attempted to sign him for Chelsea prior to the defender’s Old Trafford switch. Arguably, that makes the left-back berth the more secure option, with Matteo Darmian pushing Valencia for minutes on the opposite flank.

Right. The proper football starts tonight so it's time for me to get my fantasy football head on also. As it stands I have registered auto-pick teams for FPL and Sky this week and haven't even looked at the fixture lists, this could take some time...

    Can I get a RMT
I really want to try and fit a united player (Zlatan or Mkhitaryan) in there but its so difficult

    Foster (Jakupovic)
Dann, Morgan, van Dijk (McAuley) (Gibson)
    Alli, Cabaye, Sigurdsson, Mahrez (Højbjerg)
    Musa, Lukaku, Aguero

1m itb to play with should any major surgery be required early on

Would certainly wait on Musa.. I have Vardy in my team i don't see any reason his points should dwindle.. Cabaye too deep for my liking and would go Ayew over Siggurdsson for the same reason. Alli sharing points with Eriksen and Lamela and is Mahrez in your team assuming he stays at Leicester?

    Morning guys!

How would you spend 19.0 if you need ATT and MID? I'm currently on Lukaku & Hazard but uncertainty over Lukaku have made me thinker. For example Diego Costa & Anthony Martial sounds pretty good too especially as I don't currently have Manchester United coverage in my team.

    Here's my team:

    Foster
    Souaré, Evans, Friend
    Mahrez, Hazard, Frimino, Townsend
    Agüero, Lukaku, Negredo

    (Heaton, Koné, Friend, Feghouli)

I'm pretty happy with that. I'm LFC fan so I might be biased but I think Firmino will score bucket load of points this season. Kloppo loves his attitude and flexibility and he'll probably play lot of games as Striker too.

I've also had second thoughts about Lukaku. Not looking good in pre-season at all.

As there's little choice in that price bracket (for me), I've decided to go with another 6.5 striker (Gray/Wilson) and upgrade a Midfielder (Townsend>Eriksen)

Failing that, Rooney looks like he could be an option at 9mil, and it gives you Man U coverage

Looks like all the transfer rumours have messed up his head. If he stays at Everton he will score lot of goals over the season but maybe he's not the best option right away despite of Everton's good opening schedule.

That's one extreme gk/def setup. Just play DDG & Schm. to 4.0. Your 5 defenders are a nightmare in a good way. Are you going 5 at the back each week. Just pick 1 Leic defender & get Mahrez or Vardy. Don't rate Palace defense so downgrade Dann. I like Sagna who I think will play & Shaw although without Smalling in gw1 & playing an attacking Bou. away he may not get a cs. With all this money upgrade your attack & make Aguero a priority.

This GW 1 reminds me of the Michu, Petric debut seasons all over again...and it's scaring me.

What do you prepare for 1st couple of weeks?
    1) CS and couple of assist from defender but no goals from striker or midfielder
2)NO CS from any defender or goals from striker and midfielder

In a cheap rotating goalie strategy, do you always select the home goalkeeper?

What if it was a choice of

home vs Man City or away vs Hull?

You select the best fixture. But a home game against one of the big hitters is normally good for save points.

Go with your gut and the fixture difficulty.

It's inevitable that you will get some wrong though unfortunately

I'd pick however is likely to get the most points.

There's always a chance Hull could be free scoring at Home, in which case the City game would be good for save points.

Just each game on its own merits, there are no hard & fast rules.

I'm now doubting my Ibra pick for the 1st 3GWs... Maybe Vardy is a better pick.

    Would you rather have:

    a) Foster and Deulo

    OR

    b) De Gea and Ramirez?

5th midfielder is Hojberg so 4th midfielder needs to be pretty nailed on.

In all likelihood my 5th midfielder won't play and Hojberg just seemed like the exotic option of the bunch available

I cannot settle on this lot, is there anything that needs changing?

    Foster - Jakupovic

    Walker - Williams - Friend - NTaylor - BSmith

    Hazard - Firmino - Tadic - Deulofeu - Capoue

    Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Gray

      I like it.

Not 100% sure Deulofeu is nailed so I'd consider another 6.5 option like Townsend. I'd be looking for Spurs attacking coverage personally although Walker is a decent pick

    Thoughts on my 4-3-3 team?

    Foster-Jaku
    Otamandi-Shaw-Gabriel-Friend-Naylor
    Haz-Eriksen-Siggy-Fletcher-Capoue
    Kun-Ibra-Gray

There are a lot of managerial changes and uncertainties this season so I thought it would be wise to start with a heavy defense and WC during the first international break to change back to 3-4-3 once the dust has settled.

      Otamendi?? No

The rest of it looks OK for a 433. Might personally look at an Everton or Saints option rather than Siggy. I worry for Swansea this season

This is my approach. I've made an Ibra team but playing Vardy with 1.5itb to upgrade to Ibra, Kane, etc if necessary. If Vardy goes off & Ibra, Kane don't then if the money is needed elsewhere I will use it where required. Can I get a rmt & thanks.

    Foster (Heaton)
    VVD, Morgan, Friend (Fernandez, Kone)
    Hazard, Tadic, Ayew, Townsend (Capoue)
    Aguero, Vardy, Gray/Negredo/Carroll

In gw2 my defense will be Friend, Fernandez, Kone

I'm currently floating between 3 different teams. Which one tickles your fancy the most and why?

    Mandanda Foster
    Terry Friend Shaw/Valencia ? ?
    Mkhitaryan Eriksen Gradel ? ?
    Agüero Gray ?

    1) B. Smith, Koné, Redmond, Townsend, Ibrahimovic
    2) B. Smith, Cédric, Redmond, Hazard, Musa
    3) McAuely, Wimmer, Townsend, Fabrégas, Lukaku
