After struggling with injury in his debut season for Man United, the stage seemed set for Luke Shaw to establish himself as a regular under Louis van Gaal last time around.

Limited to just 15 starts in 2014/15 after arriving from Southampton for around £30m, the left-back had finally proven his fitness in time for the start of the previous campaign.

Handed a spot in the Dutchman’s XI, Shaw’s raids down the left were a feature of the Red Devils’ first five league matches and earned him 27 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, courtesy of an assist, three clean sheets and four bonus points.

A broken leg sustained against PSV in mid-September brought an end to that early promise and sidelined Shaw for the rest of the season.

Having averaged 5.4 points per appearance, it was a case of “what could have been” for the former Saint, as United proceeded to rack up 18 clean sheets and concede just 35 times.

The Prospects

Encouragingly, Shaw – who is priced at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – has stepped up his injury recovery over the summer period and started all four of United’s pre-season friendlies.

A strong performance in last night’s draw with Everton had the local press purring and his return to fitness has been duly noted by FPL managers, with over 16% snapping up the full-back, making him the seventh most popular defender on the market.

Although this will be Shaw’s fifth year in the top-flight, the youngster has only managed one full season so far – his breakthrough campaign for Southampton in 2013/14.

The left-back managed just two assists across 35 appearances that term, with a total of 123 points not overly convincing.

Delving into the underlying data for that season shows just why United were keen to splash the cash the following summer.

Shaw’s forages forward to join in the Saints’ attacks saw him ranked third amongst defenders for touches in the final third, whilst only Seamus Coleman made more successful dribbles (64 to 56).

His delivery from out wide also caught the eye. Shaw sat second for both crosses and successful crosses from the back and was placed fifth when it came to key passes, with 33.

In terms of goal threat, the numbers are again very encouraging. Although he failed to score with any of his 24 attempts, Shaw’s total of ten shots on target was bettered by only three other defenders.

Should he steer clear of injury, then, there’s cause for optimism that Shaw could play a significant part in the Fantasy season ahead, offering real potential for points at both ends of the pitch.

Certainly, we can expect him to be handed greater license to forage forward under Mourinho as United move away from Van Gaal’s possession-based approach.

When assessing United’s defence, it would be remiss to ignore the form of Antonio Valencia – identically priced at 5.5, he provided three assists in the recent win over Galatasaray.

It’s no secret, though, that Mourinho was a big fan of Shaw and attempted to sign him for Chelsea prior to the defender’s Old Trafford switch. Arguably, that makes the left-back berth the more secure option, with Matteo Darmian pushing Valencia for minutes on the opposite flank.

Same on Brad Smith, I believe he wouldn't have gone to Bournemouth otherwise on the money he did and he has been impressive in pre season. Also looking out for Wasilewski as an option for GW1 with Huth suspended although Hernandez may stop that from happening.

Last season I played a reasonably well balanced team that gave me flexibility with fixtures - this of course doesn't always work out and inevitably you leave too much $ on the bench.

My reasoning was that it tends to mean less transfers - and I'd be likely to outperform if I had an injured player (because my bench was higher quality) who I didn't want to sell (likely back in 2 weeks)

This seems to be against the strategy that most are taking here whereby the aim for the absolute max $ on the pitch even if it means 2 players (defender / midfielder) who may not play at all.

This seems to me to allow no flexibility for contingencies - I would imagine it might be better to have all players nailed even if the 5th def & mid are cheap.

    1. Exdeo
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 5 months ago

Had flexible team last season. Rotation, right? Lost loads points on the bench...so this season 5th def and 8th attacker are 4.0+4.5 and I don't care if they play!

Does > mean ''over" or "to"?

        I never get it...

I think the > is an arrow, not a mathematical symbol in FPL terms... who knows.

What was Zlatan doing in last game vs Everton? Walking around?
Just watched the replay game today and wonder why he's in my team at 11.5

He's never really been the energetic running around type of player, though - so I'm not sure what you were expecting.

He'll be crowded out most games if he walk around. Most teams put 11 men behind the ball these days

    Best 5.5 defender after Shaw?

    Currently on Baines.

    2nd draft. Any thoughts?

    Foster / Heaton
    Shaw / Wolschied / Friend / Stones / Evans
    Ozil / Hazard / Deulofeu / Bolasie / Dier
    Aguero / Lukaku / Musu

That midfield could do with some work right?

Foster / Evans double up does not make sense.
Dier is a bad pick, go for a 4.5m 5th Mid.
Ozil is also a bad pick.
Rest looks fine, but you need Man United players as well

Dier is a wasted pick in my opinion. Not good enough to be a proper 5th mid but too expensive to sit on the bench.

Dier not up for more than one clean sheet point now. Might Wolly> Pieters if hes an OOP.
I would'nt sweat a WB double how does Capoue rotate there?
so downgrade Dier Bolasie> Townsend. IMO good luck that looks solid.

Not much love for Wilson on here?

I think Bournemouth are going to have a very good season, and he was great when I owned him last year. Not the best fixtures, but they'll get goals and he's still the main man!

I'm hoping Gradel will be the man this season

I really want Gradel in my side but finding it difficult to fit him in and I'm slightly worried about their GW1 fixture.

He is in my team. Along with Kun and Gray. All 3 the spearhead of their attacks and capable of scoring hatties. Exciting to own 🙂

    Any major flaws here guys?

    Mandanda
    Walker/Terry/Friend
    Mhik/Feghouli/Mahrez/Hazard
    Gray/Aguero/Lukaku

    Bench: Jaku/Mendy/Koné/Lenihan

Debating swapping Lenihan for B.Smith but not sure he'll start.

      keepers >.5 more
nice midfield but trim someone to Eriksen and spend the 1.0 on defense. IMO GL
