As the start of the Premier League season nears, the community is still left with plenty to ponder in their search for the perfect side.

Our community writers offer some top tips on decision making, tackling the transfer market and spotting gems from abroad. Meanwhile, our hot topic posters look at pre-season friendlies for clues on the best players to draft and the importance of having a flexible squad to react quickly to emerging trends. Finally we catch up on the latest community tournaments to launch and gather the latest statistics from our Members area tables.

The Community Articles

With a week to go before Gameweek 1 many Fantasy managers are still undecided on their 15-man squads. Oghash offered some useful guidance on making the best decisions, with holding off going to the toilet and standing by open windows among his unusual advice.

Following such advice may make it easier for Fantasy managers to spot kindred spirits. The community’s often fruitless search for like-minded souls prompted Disable to look at the different types of people Fantasy Football addicts meet in the real world.

Spotting the best prospects among those new to English football was the focus of NotsoAthletic’s analysis of the best and worst of the Premier League’s new faces from foreign leagues. Meanwhile, Anytime Scorer has been investigating how to second-guess the transfer market early on in the Fantasy Premier League.

In our latest community writer of the month vote, Kavali has been named as the top scribe by you for his Tracking The Veterans article series, which has relaunched in an expanded format for 2016/17. A £20 Amazon voucher is on its way to him.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Pre-season is still offering more questions than answers as Fantasy managers make the final touches to their squads.

We know Wayne Rooney will only be fielded in attacking roles at Manchester United, but, as our hot topic on the new regime at Old Trafford showed, there are still plenty of question marks over whether their ageing stars can be a success. There’s also some doubts over who will get the nod in defence under Jose Mourinho.

Jordan Rhodes has been in great form for Middlesbrough during the summer friendlies, but there are still concerns that such pre-season stars will be the real deal once the Premier League starts up again.

Picking a promoted striker like Rhodes can reap rewards, as owners of former QPR hitman Charlie Austin and Watford’s sharp shooting pair Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney can testify. As Ludo’s hot topic shows, however, there are plenty of other lower league forwards who fail to make the grade at the highest level.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is another prolific Championship striker who has already impressed in pre-season. Parm urges quick investment as he believes Gray is set to hit the ground running from Gameweek 1. However, Ron E urges caution in fielding the Burnley man against some of the Premier League’s tougher defences, as he has a reputation for struggling against top teams.

Bowstring the Carp has been gathering some further statistics from the friendlies to help sort the successes from the flops, which is an excellent compliment to our own, regularly updated, pre-season form guide.

Disable has been considering those players that have yet to shine in pre-season, which Fantasy managers may be unfairly overlooking, while Evs has also been casting his gaze over the best prospects amongst those players who are new to the Premier League.

Getting the best players is only half the battle in constructing the perfect FPL side, says Twister Saltergater. He urges FPL managers to make sure they carefully consider team balance so that poorly performing players can be drafted out swiftly for emerging stars.

Finally, Kavali is urging the best FPL managers who are within the top 20 of our Hall of Fame to get in touch to help out with his forthcoming 2016/17 tracking the veterans analysis.

The Members Tables

Among the latest Members to create their own tables is Forza Inter, who has been on the hunt for clues as to which midfielders are likely to score well next season.

Elsewhere, end of season team form and those sides who got off to a flier last season are the key issues considered in Kushal21’s latest tables, while Goalkeepers are the subject of moin-panwar’s latest offering.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Two popular community tournaments are set to return for 2016/17, with TorresMagic announcing details of next season’s Last Man Standing and Jaffalicious bringing us news of how to enter his FFS UEFA Champions League themed competition

There are is also a new tournament for some of our community, with HVT setting up the Irish Contingent League for his fellow countrymen and women.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spread sheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Kane has been the PL top scorer for the past two seasons and he's cheaper than both Agüero and Ibra. Plus he is BY FAR the best captain choice for GW2.

Unlike Kun, he's never gets injured and he plays 90 every week. Ibra is 34, playing for a Mourinho side and has no PL experience.

Why don't we all have Kane in our teams?

Not sure how Poch will line up this year. He seems to be pushing through Carter-Vickers, so maybe could even see Wimmer-CV partnerships before CL games.

Likewise, I guess there is still threat of Janssen starting games before CL starts in Sept, with Kane off the bench if Spurs are struggling.

Guess there is also very capable coverage in Midfield.

You honestly think that Kane is gonna be benched in PL games in the first couple months of the season?

          • 10 Years

Absolutely possible. Worth checking the pre-CL fixtures once the draw is announced.

Any away game with long-distance travel, with a nearby 'easy' game (i.e. what you'd commonly call a bottom-half club), and I reckon 4-2-3-1 with Janssen up top could very well happen.

Interesting, cheers for this. It's an possibility in September I concede, but I'm not sure it's worth planning beyond the first month/month and a half of the season. Maybe it's me being too short sighted but I'm more focused on having Kane in my squad to captain in GW2 than what may happen next month. Injuries could have chanhed the whole landscape of FPL by then (Jansen injury for example).

Hi all - just over one week to go! Wana better my 2.3k OR this year!! Excited!

So how are we shaping up? Here's me (planning GW3 wildcard):

    Heaton / Jak
VVD Azpi Shaw / Fernandez (for GW2) 4.0
Eriksen Willian Deulofeu Mkhi / Capoue
    Vardy Kun Gray

Vardy is in there because I think he'll be really overlooked at the beginning of the season - I reckon hul ARS SWA are three games where he'll get returns!

What do you guys reckon? Know the back is a bit heavy and the mid is a bit light, but I'm trying for a punts / constants kind of balance in full acknowledgement I'll be jumping on all bandwagons, plus shying away from most EURO burn outers.

Hope you're all enjoying your Fridays 🙂

Hey Granville 🙂 We going to see you back on the SC maybe this year? 🙂

Yeah that's interesting - both have their +s and -s. I'm happy with my way round at the mo - Kane needs to convince me (despite a huge season last year, fond memories of the Bournemouth hattie still 🙂 ) and Mahrez vs. Vardy is probably a bit of an either/or. I think Eriksen got unlucky not to score more last year if you look at the underlying stats, plus he'll be fresh at the start of the season (of course the same is true of Mahrez)

I'm not sure yet, but I needed the money from Vardy/Eriksen to finance the rest of my team.

Cheers for commenting, hope you're good 🙂

For sure - City's midfield is a minefield, in defence we're waiting on Stones to see what might happen - all in all, Aguero SUN for GW1 is just a no-brainer for the (C).

Despite how many punts we'll take in our teams, I'd bet the vast, vast majority of FFS will have the armband on the little man GW1!

I doubt it but a win tonight is all I am asking for.

Evening all. Any chance of a RMT pretty please:

    Heaton, Mandanda
    Shaw, Terry, Naylor, Friend, Jevans
    Mkhitaryan, Hazard, Alli, Deulofeu, Capoue
    Aguero, Musa, Gray

    0.5 ITB

What do I need to change to get rid of the -ish BF? 🙂

I think you need a big hitter alongside Aguero 🙂

The trouble is that I don't really fancy any of the forwards in the 8-9m range and I would need to downgrade one of my midfield to get an additional 1.5m to get a 10+m one and that would be Vardy.

It was a toss up between Janssen and Musa or another 6.5m fwd.

I will keep it in mind though when I am tinkering. cheers BF

Upgrade Deulofeu to Siggy or Tadic. Downgrade Mandanda to Jakupovic. Upgrade Naylor or Friend.

I'm happy enough with Naylor and Friend, only ever play 3 at the back usually and I have 2 constants in Shaw and Terry, the others will rotate.

I had Jakupovic to start with but he doesn't leave any wiggle room so I went for 2 x 4.5m GK..

I would prefer Tadic but only have 0.5 in the bank so would have to gain 0.5 from somewhere else.

But thanks for the thoughts anyway:)

Personally prefer lamela from spurs. I'd do alli + deulofeu > firmino + lamela but that's just my preference.

      Overall it's a solid team, 8/10

Hmmm....that's a good suggestion PKW, I will weigh it up. Thanks

      Hey man!

Nice team - are you going for a Naylor / Friend / JEvans rotation? Fair play if so, I have Naylor too cos they have a sick opening couple of fixtures, though I probably won't start him vs. Burnley (I have Gray)

Really like the Musa punt too, I'm between him and Vardy at the mo, currently on Vardy cos I reckon he'll be overlooked by many at he start.

All in all, not bad at all - good mix of punt/proven!

Can you look at my RMT above? 🙂

        Yes Naylor, Friend, Evans rotation.

I like your team a lot. Willian could be a good punt. I prefer Alli to Erikson though.

        cheers mate 🙂

          Cheers dude!

I never like having a triple rotation - injuries and other factors always end up screwing it up. Though Nafrevans might be a good call, I kind of like having a 4.0 and allocating that 0.5 further forward.

Horses for courses, though! Good luck 🙂

What a save. Elneny denied. Bandwagon derailed.
