Following on from our analysis of goalkeepers, budget defenders, mid-priced defenders, premium defenders, budget midfielders, mid price midfielders, premium midfielders and budget forwards in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player list, our next foray takes us to mid-price forwards.

While budget frontmen can sometimes be blighted by rotation, FPL managers should have greater confidence amongst this group in terms of definite starters.

Our current cast of mid-price options also contains some of last year’s budget picks who far exceeded expectations and their lowly valuation.

Watford’s two forwards Troy Deeney (7.0) and Odion Ighalo (7.5) are two such examples.

Although Ighalo bettered his strike partner by 175 points to 166 last time around, there are question marks over his consistency. The Nigerian scored 14 times in the first 19 Gameweeks of 2015/16, netting against top eight sides such as West Ham, Liverpool (both twice), Spurs and Chelsea, but notched just twice over the second half of the season.

In comparison, Deeney offered returns throughout the campaign, thanks in part to his penalty taking duties – six successful spot kicks in 2015/16 were more than any other player.

So far in pre-season, both players have started four of Watford’s five friendlies, though are taking time to click in new manager Walter Mazzarri’s 3-5-2 formation – Ighalo has yet to score, whilst Deeney has struck just once.

Up against Southampton, Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham and Man United in their first five, many may choose to overlook the pair initially, though Ighalo surprisingly sits in 11% of squads so far compared to Deeney’s 6%.

Leicester new boy Ahmed Musa is the man of the moment after a midweek brace against Barcelona. It remains to be seen whether he can immediately force his way into Claudio Ranieri’s XI, though with Jamie Vardy nailed-on as the lone forward, Musa could be confined to a central support role or spot on the flank at best. Regardless, his eye for goal and 7.5 price tag have persuaded over 11% to invest.

Liverpool’s Christian Benteke and Man City’s Wilfried Bony (both 7.5) need to find themselves new clubs to remain in contention. Benteke’s 42 goals in three seasons for Villa shows his capabilities and a mooted move to Palace could be Fantasy gold.

With Pep Guardiola strengthening his options in attacking midfield, and Sergio Aguero undoubtedly City’s number one striker, Bony and team-mate Kelechi Iheanacho (7.0) may have to rely on minutes off the bench unless injuries hit hard at the Etihad. Eight goals and an assist in just 766 minutes last year suggest the latter could prosper if given the opportunity.

At 7.0 apiece, Divock Origi and Marcus Rashford have the potential to offer excellent value if they can cement regular starts at Liverpool and United respectively. Given the transfers-in over the summer at both clubs, neither player looks assured of minutes right now and looks an unnecessary risk for our initial 15-man squads.

Another budget success story was Jermain Defoe, who has seen his price rise from 5.5 to 7.0 on the back of 15 goals last term. This was the veteran’s sixth double-digit goal scoring return in nine Premier League seasons, though the departure of Sam Allardyce could force a reassessment as the Black Cats become accustomed to life under David Moyes.

Defoe is also a slight doubt for the season kick-off and has failed to feature in Sunderland’s last few friendlies due to injury.

The departure of Graziano Pelle is set to shake up the Southampton attack for the season ahead. Intriguingly, new manager Claude Puel has moved away from the usual 4-2-3-1 and rolled out a midfield diamond system with two up front.

Although midfielder Nathan Redmond (6.0) has also been utilised up front and may come to the fore as an out of position prospect, both Shane Long and Charlie Austin also have the chance to emerge as excellent value under the Frenchman.

Long finished 2015/16 as a regular in the Saints’ attack, scoring ten times and assisting a further four goals, and is currently the most popular FPL forward priced at 7.5 and under, with 14% ownership.

Injury meant Austin only managed 211 minutes of play following his move from QPR, but a tally of 18 goals in 2014/15 for the Hoops indicates that, if given pitch time, he can deliver excellent returns.

Home games against Watford and Sunderland in the first four Gameweeks could prove especially profitable for one, if not both, though it’s uncertain who Puel will select for the season opener against the Hornets.

After a stellar 2014/15, where he scored 14 goals, Saido Berahino’s West Brom career nosedived due to transfer speculation.

If, as is widely expected, he moves clubs and is guaranteed starts he could provide excellent value at 6.5.

Berahino has already scored two goals in pre-season and his expected departure is set to cement Salomon Rondon’s role as West Brom’s main striker. The 6.5 priced Venezuelan enjoyed a solid start in his debut Premier League season where he scored nine times and notched three assists, though picking a Tony Pulis attacker typically tends to be a risky tactic.

Injury has hampered Andy Carroll’s now lengthy Premier League career that spans nine seasons and has seen him score 43 times for Newcastle, Liverpool and latterly West Ham.

The big Geordie’s injury history suggests that his acquisition will always come with a degree of risk but if he can stay fit, he’s capable of offering superb value at just 6.5 – providing Slaven Bilic doesn’t bring in a big-name forward, of course.

Nine goals from 13 starts last term gave a glimmer of what a fit Carroll can achieve, as does his impressive 35.2 minute per goal attempt in the box statistic from 2015/16. With home fixtures against Bournemouth and Watford in the first four Gameweeks, FPL managers will be hoping he can remain clear of the treatment room.

Among the promoted clubs’ forwards, Andre Gray is arguably the most enticing option. Priced at 6.5 he offers both goals and assists, bagging 23 and creating a further eight in 41 starts last season. Owned by 11% of FPL managers, Gray has already struck nine times in pre-season – netting in all six of his appearances – whilst Burnley are the only side set to play four times at home (SWA, LIV, che, HUL, lei) in the first six Gameweeks.

Middlesbrough’s summer signing Alvaro Negredo has been quick to make his presence felt and scored twice in as many starts over the summer. Aitor Karanka’s penchant for freshening up his attack could mean Negredo’s minutes are restricted late on in matches, though the former City frontman brings vital top-flight experience to ‘Boro’s attack and is expected to be handed the majority of starts ahead of Jordan Rhodes (6.0) as the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1.

Second only to Long for ownership (11.5%) in the 7.5 and under category, Negredo could benefit from some kind opening matches as the promoted side face Stoke, Sunderland, West Brom, Palace and Everton in the first five Gameweeks.

Callum Wilson (6.5)’s promising 2015/16 campaign for Bournemouth was curtailed by injury but with five goals in a mere nine starts he did enough to justify his mid price valuation this time around. A home clash against Man United and tricky away ties to West Ham and Man City in the first five Gameweeks may curtail initial interest for many.

Good team but the midfield is fairly inflexible should you need to get any premium mids in place.

Later maybe Ibra to 9.0 and Siggy to 9.5...to get two premium mids like Ozil/Payet..

I think I am going to ditch Deulofeu. And not because he played badly the other night (I actually think he wasn't AS bad as people are making out) but because of Lukaku.

Lukaku clearly has his head somewhere else and isn't interested in playing for Everton. This is going to surely impact on Everton's attacking output as a whole until he moves on, so initially I think I will avoid Everton attackers - at least for the first few weeks until the transfer window has closed and then re-asses.

Koeman also may chose to adopt a more defensive pressing game as he did at some stages with Southampton where they would get points by winning their games 1-0 etc. when their attack wasn't in form. It wasn't always an major attacking style that they ended up playing.

I think giving DelBoy a few weeks to get settled and for Everton's attack to settle is the best option and he will be easy to bring in, should he sparkle into form.

I posted this late last night but thought I'd get people's thoughts on it this morning.

The next problem is who to replace him with? I don't like picking pre-season form bandwagons but Lamela is hard to ignore.

I agree with you as I've been using this train of thought with other unsettled teams. The Swansea defence because of the Williams situation & will an unsettled Ayew impact on Siggys assists are examples.
On the plus side for Deulofeu, he could play in a more advanced position if Lukaku leaves. He has had time to settle, is more mature and may get more chance under a new manager.
      It's all guesswork.

Yeah good points. Although unlike most folk in here I don't always like a midfielder that is OOP. Someone like Del needs space out wide IMO to make his best impact rather than runs through the centre.

Llorente joining SWA suddenly remove some appeal to ayew.
What do you think of lamela?

What's with all this nailed talk? do people means they want a player who is gonna start all 38 games regardless of how badly they play? Guys like Redmond/Lamela/Deulofeu etc will play as long as they are playing well. if they play poorly they will get benched.. though they will probably get thrown out of our fpl teams before that. At the end of the day us fpl managers are less forgiving of a run of 2,2,2 than real life managers who care about other stats ..

Finally someone with sense. We're not picking players for the season. We have transfers for a reason. Most of us will WC after the first 2 months anyway. I'm picking guys like Valencia and Redmond becuase of this.

        My midfield is currently
Siggy Lamela Townsend Deulofeu Ramirez 😎

With the big 3 upfront. Considering fixtures and the potential in that price bracket i should "survive" the first month or so pretty easily(Redmond/Bojan/Ibe all planned replacements.. gone for 6.5+ so i can downgrade if required and not upgrade)

Yep really like it, all players either in my side or high on watchlist. Therer really is a plethora of mid option in that price bracket. Kane could be very useful GW2 for captain.

Just saying if they aren't nailed on you could find a whole lot of players suddenly get dropped then you'd have forced transfers you'd have to make. Why create potential problems for yourself? better to reduce the risk imo

Not saying own 5 of them! There's nothing wrong with taking a punt on 1 or 2 of those names in your starting lineup should be no worry though. I currently have just Lamela/Deulofeu as "risky" punts in my 15 and i'm pretty ok with that.

Sure but I think its the start of a slippery slope. I think even the most dullard of us can over estimate the 'nailed on-ness' of some players and get a little surprise in the opening GW's. By inviting more risk we can make it worse.

      2. Nabs Kebabs
        • 14 Years

All of the above players will play. For how long depends on performance. If they're bad and get dropped we'd be transferring them out anyway cos they woudn't have been scoring points. All potential great bargains if they play well. I like Redmond in particular.

Its a judgement call but having too many 50/50's can cause problems if you end up needing to remove too many at once. It basically forces the use of the WC. Some people are into that, some aren't.

That is true. I see nothing wrong with that though. If you take a few calculated punts and in the unlikely evenet they all fail at the same time, that really is what the safety of the WC is for.

This is probably the season to actually care about what happens in pre season due to so many International players potentially missing from the first two gameweeks.

Anyone like Deulofeu and Redmond have had good and full ones so you fancy them to start the season, after that, like you say, we have one transfer a week.

People ignoring the Euros are the ones likely to get caught out, Payet is still mass owned, that's going to hurt.

      1. Valar(Keith)
        • 16 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

Agree totally. I barely have anyone from the Euros.. Plan is to WC them in after 5 or so GWs(i hold on to my WC far too long every season) and the opening GWs is probably the best time to punt on guys like them before we all revert back to the usual fpl stalwarts.

Why plan for the use of transfers though. We have enough problems to worry about without planning out transfers in advance. What if other players that you rely on to be good end up not having any form, then there are injuries as well. Reducing risk reduces the need for multiple transfers and hits and an early WC.

I don't think anyone's planning transfers but plenty are ignoring that we have them to use.

Because of the Euros I'm 100% wildcarding early so there's little sense to me to pick long term players who may not be completely ready for the start of the season, I'm more interested in players that have had a pretty season and look like they will be ready to start the season for their teams, my real team won't be picked until the WC.

              Is that to me Ryan?

If so, no, not at all, I'm predicting that I will pick a team that I feel will be fit and ready for GW1 and then use my 1 transfer a week up to when I wildard in my proper team and then look to play the game organically.

The transfers before the wildcard are there to use to manoeuvre through the tricky start to the wildcard, see nothing mad about it, you can only ever roll one over.

Firmino. No summer tournament. Full pre-season. Deadly once he got settled at Anfield. Klopp loves him. Scored twice against Arsenal last season. Liverpool have 2 tough away games early on where he may be used as a false #9. Worth considering. 🙂

Yes 100%, Firmino, Costa (but that could be risky now if he's looking to move) Mane, Walcott/Cazorla (not so much now) were players I jotted down in the Summer to try and build a team around for the start simply because they've had it off.

Some Euro players will come back late so may not be up to speed, others may take a few games to get going again after it, it happens, the Germans (after the last World Cup) took ages to get going for Arsenal.

Feels very dangerous to ignore these factors for the start.

I'm going nuts. 20 or so drafts in as many days. I've said to myself "enough is enough". But before I leave it to fate, I'd love a RMT from all of you who are proabably SO much better than me at this:

    Hart
    Morgan, Stones, Gabriel
    Mkhitaryan, Martial, Nolito, Xhaka, Kante
    Ibrahimovic, Aguero

    Jukupovic, Wilson, Paredes, Grabban

Going heavy on City and United to get a good springboard from the opening fixtures.

First of all, stop drafting. 🙂

Drafts at this stage are only to give yourself an idea of possibilities. You still have another 4-5 days before you start to finalise your squad.

First decide on your strategy. When will you wildcard? Are you building a team for 3 weeks? 6 weeks? An indefinite period? When do you plan to use the other chips?

Then have a look for players that are value for their price tag (= under-valued). Decide which 2 or 3 premium players you want taking fixtures and captaincy into account. Build from there.

Exactly it. We can't be sure on particular picks until the pressers just before GW1. I can't believe how little people consider strategy and just tinker all preseason. Thinking about WC and the chips is far more imporant for the bulk of the preseason. I also use the same method of getting the absolute bargains and best captains as a base to build around.

I disagree here in terms of chips at least. The value of chips is minimal compared to selecting your GW1 squad.

Thinking of plans to use your chips has some worth to it. Tinkering has no worth, it's all a bit of fun. Doing research on players/managers and likely starting XIs for teams is far more important than swapping players in and out every day in pre season.

Tinkering happens as people gain more information on players. This changes as a result of pre-season form, injuries, transfers and transfer speculation.

You could just wait until the final days to select a team from scratch but I do believe that tinkering has a bit of value in terms of helping you to learn about those players you've selected. Its almost a visual reminder of who you are keeping an eye on forcing you to dig a little deeper in your research.

In my eyes selecting the right players is the most important thing in pre season. That and having a flexible price structure so help hopping on and off the right wagons.

Exactly my point - it all means nothing until the end of the pre season when all the information is there - things change every day in pre season and tinkering is generally about the flavour of the day.

I agree on the visual aid part. Naturally we will all do some tinkering anyway because it is fun to get this benefit. My point is that constant tinkering is waste of time.

                > In my eyes selecting the right players is the most important thing in pre season.

Yes obviously we need to select the right players. I'm saying constant tinkering is waste of time and i'd rather spend that time thinking about WC strategy or maximising chips.

Any Palace fans around please? Who's likely to start the season in goal?

    1. Ruth_NZ

      Not a Palace fan but...

Mandanda - Ligue 1 GK of the season, Marseille's player of the season, understudy to Lloris for France, highly regarded and 31 years old, chose Palace over Chelsea.

That all sounds like a 1st choice GK to me.

The presence of Hennessey put me off until I did some research. But it looks to me like Mandanda should have the spot.

What's the thoughts on this latest draft? I'm not mad about having 2 cheaper strikers, but too much uncertainty surrounding the main picks & Ibra/Kane wrecks my midfield. 2.0 ITB to upgrade Redmond/Musa if they don't start.

    Foster/Jak
    Terry/Shaw/Friend/Kone/Leni
    Haz/Martial/Redmond/Firmino/Capoue
    Kun/Gray/Musa

      B. Can always downgrade Ibra. If you get Musa though and Ibra starts firing, then hard to accommodate.

With Ibra at ~35% ownership, not owning him at the start with those fixtures is now a big risk in itself

I have been thinking of doubling up on Coleman and Baines at back for Everton.

My reasoning is they may be wing back's in a 3-5-2, attacking potential, Koeman's defensive record, Everton's early fixtures and the differential potential of doubling up on defenders.

There is also a lack of midfielders around the 7/8 million mark I can get behind so that is where the money is coming from - instead of a Deulofeu as 4th midfielder in a 3-4-3 I would play a 4-3-3 with 2 budget mids on the bench.

A few things holding me back - I have tried doubling up at the back before a few times and it has been as disaster - i think it was Stoke last year who went through a run of 7/8 favourable fixtures without a CS. Also I nearly always scrimp on defence and concentrate on mid/att which has consistently got me inside or around top 10k (with exception of last year) so will be a wrench to actually go through with it.

    Thoughts?

Musa is naturally a winger. I was surprised that FPL listed him as a forward and not a mid. I don't think he will be playing alongside Vardy. I personally see Vardy + Okazaki upfront with Musa replacing Albrighton on the wing.

He can play as a winger or striker, he's their record signing - can't see him then being benched, community shield should shed some light. Worth a punt I reckon.

Who do people think are the most under valued players this season?

I think at 8mil. Coutinho could be a steal?!

i think 8 mil looks about right. undervalued by 0.5 maybe. but with mane in the team, i think coutinho will have a better attacking role and still be a rotation risk

Surely with no Europe to consider and being fresh early season he will start.

then he could be a steal.

Firmino, Coutinho, Ramsey, Fabregas, Siggy, Lamela, Bojan, Bolasie, Ramirez(in order of price).. and hopefully Deulofeu, Redmond, Ibe. Just too much value below 8.5 😯

I just shipped out Deulofeu as worried about his gametime

      Firmino at 8.5
      Redmond at 6.0
Carroll at 6.5 (when fixtures turn)
Gradel at 5.5 (when fixtures turn)

for a rotation risk player, 8m suits him imo

Yea, currently no one. CL qualies are putting me off and a few players not yet fit to play.

Question: I created a league last year and now I renewed it. All players who were there should be automatically added this year. But what if I want to invite somebody else? There is no possibility to do it?
