Having seen Alberto Paloschi and Eder depart the Liberty Stadium this summer, and with Bafetimbi Gomis joining Marseille on a season-long loan, Swansea went some way to bolstering their striking options last week with the signing of Sevilla forward Fernando Llorente for an undisclosed fee.

The 31-year-old penned a two-year deal with the Swans, and has revealed he hopes the move will boost his chances of earning an international recall:

“This team wanted me a lot and I want to be here. I want to play in the Premier League and know the Premier League… I would like to get back into the national side and I know that I will need to play well for Swansea all season if I want to do that. I would like to return to play for Spain, it would be a very special thing for me.”

The History

At the age of 11, Llorente joined the Athletic Bilbao youth set-up, and gradually progressed through the ranks at the club.

He spent the 2003/04 season with CD Basconia, a feeder club of Athletic Bilbao, and scored 12 goals in 33 matches. Llorente progressed to Bilbao Athletic, the club’s reserve side, the following year, where he continued to impress by scoring four times in 16 outings.

In January 2005, Llorente was handed La Liga debut for Athletic in a 1-1 draw against Espanyol, and he would go on to make 15 league appearances in 2004/05, scoring three goals.

Llorente gradually established himself as a regular starter for Athletic, with his most prolific season for the club coming in 2010/11, where he scored 18 goals in 38 league matches. In total, he made 327 appearances for Athletic in all competitions, scoring 111 goals and registering 36 assists.

Following the expiration of his contract in July 2013, Llorente joined Italian side Juventus. His first season in Turin was relatively prolific, totalling 16 goals and five assists in 34 league matches as The Old Lady secured another Serie A title.

He would only score seven goals and add one assist in 31 matches the following season, and with Juve deciding not to renew his contract, Llorente moved back to Spain last summer to join Sevilla.

Despite Sevilla wining the Europa League, it would prove to be an unsuccessful season on a personal level for Llorente, who struggled for pitch time mainly due to the form of Kevin Gameiro. He ended the campaign with four goals and as many assists from 23 league appearances, while he also netted three times in seven European matches.

Prolific for Spain at Under 17, Under 20 and Under 21 levels, scoring 12 goals in 16 matches, Llorente made his senior debut against Chile in November 2008. He was a member of the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 winning squads, and has notched seven goals in 24 international appearances, although he hasn’t represented his country since November 2013.

The Prospects

With Andre Ayew also leaving the Liberty over the last few days, it’s fair to say that the Swans desperately need to replenish their options in the final third.

Handed a 58-minute debut against Stade Rennais at the weekend, Llorente looks in line to be afforded the lone striker role for the Swans’ trip to Burnley this weekend.

Although the new boy could also retain a starting berth for the Gameweek 2 home encounter against Hull, the expected arrival of fellow Spaniard Borja Baston is likely to place major question marks over his pitch time, given that Francesco Guidolin generally prefers a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation, although he did also use a 4-1-2-1-2 midfield diamond on occasion last season.

During pre-season, the Italian mainly utilised a 4-3-3, so Llorente could be flanked by Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer in attack, with Modou Barrow and Jefferson Montero other options in the wide positions.

Gylfi Sigurdsson didn’t feature on Saturday, having only recently returned to training following his Euro 2016 exertions, but the Iceland international will be a sure starter throughout the campaign, either in his familiar number ten role, or as part of a three-man midfield, operating as the most attack-minded player of the trio.

Llorente has been handed a 6.5 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), which, given his pedigree, appears pretty enticing. Nonetheless, having failed to earn a regular starting role over the past two seasons, there are concerns he may be on the down slope in terms of career trajectory and there’d be no real surprise if he ends up as a back-up option if Baston arrives.

The presence of Sigurdsson also casts a shadow over Llorente’s appeal. The Icelander has served up 154 and 158 points over the last two campaigns, and while the former Tottenham midfielder is more expensive at 7.5 in FPL, with dead-ball duties and spot-kicks in his favour, it’s difficult to overlook him as the most enticing route into the Swans’ attack over 2016/17.

Sigurdsson’s initial fitness concerns, and the fact Llorente is also lacking sharpness and may soon face competition from Baston for the lone striker role, may persuade Fantasy managers to look elsewhere for the time being until things begin to settle down at the Liberty.

Certainly, Swansea’s brutal schedule from Gameweek 3-8 (lei, CHE, sot, MCI, LIV, ars) suggests that early investment might struggle to pay off.

With a number of more secure options at a similar price point for our three-man frontlines and the arrival of Baston – who notched 18 goals in La Liga last season – set to place question marks over his role in Guidolin’s XI over the season, Llorente faces a tough task to remain in consideration as the campaign unfolds.

Are some options not being overlooked?

    - If people fancy Hazard to do well, then surely Costa will also do well? His goalscoring record is exceptional for Chelsea, he's the target man, will undoubtedly get goals IMO. Also 2m cheaper than Zlatan which means you can afford someone like Sanchez/KDB if you wanted to.

    - Sanchez (!!!) - Liverpool defence is pants, Arsenal always score goals and are one of the most attacking teams in the league, then they have Leicester who they beat twice last year despite their incredible season.

    - KDB/Silva - Former was in most teams at the start of pre-season but seems to be out of favour now due to lack of minutes. If he starts he could run riot. Silva more likely to start and always generally ticks along with points.

-Kane - I'm aware quite a few people have him in their teams but not many have considered anyone but Kun, Zlatan and Vardy. Kane will get 20-25 goals again this season and has good fixtures to begin with. I don't think a poor WC where the whole England team was below average should change your views on that.

    - Mane - equally good option arguably to Firmino, especially if the latter plays as a 10 rather than a false 9.

    - Lukaku - unless you think he's leaving so may be unsettled, he has always performed better in the first half of the season, is almost certainly on pens and has the fixtures.

depends on how big your balls are i guess!

guarantee the late influx of FPL players will be casuals, a lot of United fans may mean Ibra(c).

If Zlatan outscores your replacement heavily (keep in mind you're suggesting keeping enough in bank to get him back which means throwing out that VORP approach)...could be playing catch up from day 1!

then again....would bet that you overtake the casuals eventually in the long run so shouldn't stress too much about GW1 ranks.

          Argh confusing myself haha

      - Agree, but ultimately hazard feels that little bit shinier.
      - £11.5m (!!!)
-KDB is a lot of money when you can only captain one of him and Aguero. I like Silva as a safe option to begin with, but have gone elsewhere in the end. Also, Man City now have 57 attacking midfielders to fit into 3 positions.
      - Kane the mids are just sooo much cheaper in these times of financial austerity (start of the season)
      - I just prefer Firmino, and he's 0.5 cheaper
      - Lukaku, was nailed in my team for the longest time, but no spark in preseason has put me off. Could come in for vardy after a couple of weeks though.

He was one of the first names on my teamsheet when prices came out. But now a bit worried for his gametime unfortunately. If he's a starter though he'll rack up the points and make a mockery of that price tag.

I disagree with the Silva point. Hes not really an FPL player for me. He tries to influence a game from deep way too much and whilst he could have a good game doing that, a lot of the time, he doesn't contribute directly to the goal. Frustrating though cos hes one of the nest in the PL still

I think given the funds spent upfront, most people are going for just one of the 3 of Haz, Sanchez and KDB. Haz is the most popular due to form. Relatively easy switch to Sanchez if he starts well. Will need a bit of restructuring to get 2 of them.

Mane is equally good to Firmino. You said it yourself. Firmino is cheaper.

Lukaku's form for Everton has been dire for some time. He's not on penalties either. If Everton click then he's a great price at 9.0

Agree Costa well under the radar.
Sanchez, KDB expensive so need to show some form first.
      Silva unexciting
      Kane a secure pick
Mane - was trolled by him last season: hot when not owning, cold when owning
      Lukaku - unsettled, don't trust.

But with Kun, Ibra amd Vardy in the mix, it's all about the available ££

I agree entirely with the gist of this post. Most of those options are excellent in their own right. In particular I think Sanchez is criminally overlooked. I've got him in my team myself.

My only reservations are with Lukaku Costa and Silva. At least early on.

      - Lukaku: Wants to move away, unsettled. Not a good start. If he stays after the window closes then he'd be a good option.

      - Costa: Similar issue as Lukaku, could be sold if Chelsea get their replacement (might even be Lukaku). In saying that I think Costa is less unsettled as Lukaku and more professional, could still do well.

      - Silva: I think his best days are behind him, injury prone and thus more likely to be rotated with all those new signings.

      - Sounds like Conte isn't Costa's biggest fan - risk of him not getting full matches or even starting if Batshuayi is preferred
      - Worth also saying that it looks like Sanchez will start the first couple of games up front as a striker, and looked very dangerous there against City.
      - Agreed on KDB but Silva's injury worries are always an issue
      - Until Kane starts showing form again then I'm out. No point putting him in for Everton away IMO anyway
      - Mane is in my team already. Has been incredibly sharp in pre-season by all accounts and should thrive under Klopp. Plus Arsenal's inexperienced defence could be leaky first game.
      - No desire to get Lukaku in until he starts scoring. He's a streaky player and I lost patience with him last season after endless 2pt performances.

While Mkhi is a good player, a great performance by Lingard in the community shield and only a 2 minute cameo in the same game for Mkhi makes me believe that he's going to be eased into the first team.

The quality of defenders at Juventus is incomparable to Chelsea. Chiellini is one of the finest defenders of his generation, Buffon the same and Bonucci far better than anything Chelsea have at CB.

The only Chelsea defender who is top quality now is Azpi. Terry and Ivan are degrading, Cahill is solid but prone to errors. Add that Courtois has been sloppy and I'm not going near their defence.

A lot of people here favour the rotation of cheap keepers. I'll probably go with DDG & Jaku, instead and just stick with my premium. Still open to tinkering with my 3 premium defence (DDG & 2x 5.5 defenders). I guess it comes down to whether you think Burnley, West Brom etc are going to keep enough clean sheets this season.

I've always favoured your strategy too. I've gone with Courtois but I have a United defender.

Premium priced goalkeepers are 0.5 mill cheaper at the start of this season then last season DDG, Courtois were 6 mill at the start of last season. I think starting with a premium priced keeper is the way to go this year.

You could try for the best of both worlds, players like Schmeichel, Forster and Butland make saves and keep a fair amount of clean sheets.

Butland made an insane amount last year, he was injured near the end and still was in the top 3 or 4, also got plenty of bonus too which is rare for a keeper.

    @ Irish Madridista

Really not sold on Lamela. I did have him in after having a delve into last season's stats, but can't help but feel he'll remain the sideshow to the main protagonists - ie. Spurs' Willian

Your easiest move is probably Firmino over Mane. Template I know, but you can't survive on that defence

I like Lamela, clearly growing as a player and under-priced IMO.

the tadic VS remdond is killing me.

its either tadic and a 4.5 mid (capou, watson, etc.), or redmond and bolasie/fegouli/townsend, philips - which will give depth but will create benching headaches.

    thoughts?

I think so. Each one's plus points are roughly similar I reckon. Redmond most likely to rocket in price if he scores a couple

    3. Pasqualinho
      • 16 Years

I've already given my thoughts on Tadic being a big price-drop risk. Redmond is a little safer price-wise because of his price.

Redmond and Feghouli rotate really well.

    5. nobwak
      • 10 Years

I've gone with Redmond. Though I have Gray up front, and there will be weeks where I'd like to bench him against strong opposition, so I need the extra funds in midfield for when I want to play 3-5-2 rather than 3-4-3.
Depends who your 3rd forward is basically, IMO.

    Morning folks.

I am contemplating going with three bigs up top, and I have Bolasie in my team hoping that he moves to Everton.

    Heaton/Foster
    Shaw/Stones/Fernandez/Pieters/McAuley
    Silva/Bolasie/Townsend/Ayew/Fletcher
    Kun/Lukaku/Ibra

    What's everybody reckon?

    hey guys

Which of the three combos do you prefer with the exact same budget? I tried to flesh out the pros and cons to make it more useful to everyone.

    1/ Vardy – Eriksen – Deulofeu - Terry
    Pros:
+ Vardy has great fixtures and is on pens (probably)
    + I like Deulofeu’s upside
+ Terry is nailed with Conte for quite a while
    Cons:
-No Ibra with these fixtures could be deadly
-Impact of Bolasie on Deulofeu’s time

2/ Ibra – Eriksen – Imbula (bench wamer) – Terry
    Pros:
+Ibra could really hit the ground running
+At least there won’t be a debate on who to bench with Imbula (who is a great player btw)
    Cons:
-my team is getting a lot more polarized

    3/ Ibra – Ayew – Deulofeu – Funes Mori
    Pros:
    +Ibra again
+Ayew at 7.5 is tremendous value in a team like West Ham and should play in the hole. Payet will come from wide.
+Keep Deulofeu who is an amazing talent
    Cons:
-Impact of Bolasie on Deulofeu’s time
-No spurs exposure despite good fixtures
-A bit of a risk on Ayew playing time
-No Chelsea defense exposure (but I have stones and shaw)

Which would you pick and why? All 3 would be regular starters.

    a) Mahrez - Lamela - Long

    b) Mahrez - Lamela - Deulofeu

    c) Vardy - Townsend - Deulofeu
