It’s time for the first pre-Gameweek members article of the 2016/17 season as we check out the main captaincy contenders on offer. As usual, we analyse the Opta numbers and also check up on the Rate My Team ratings before offering up a couple of differential options in light of the data analysis.

The Captain Poll

Not surprisingly, Sergio Aguero is the outright frontrunner for our Gameweek 1 Captain Poll, with over 55% of the votes cast ahead of City’s home encounter against Sunderland.

The Argentine netted 15 of his 24 goals at the Etihad last time around and faces a Black Cats backline that was breached more times on their travels than any other side in 2015/16.

Sunderland managed just two away clean sheets all season and given that Aguero has scored in both his pre-season matches, we can’t see the visitors spoiling Pep Guardiola’s first match in charge.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic takes the runners-up spot ahead of his Premier League debut for United. The second most popular player in Fantasy Premier League, he’s selected by 14% after notching twice over the recent pre-season matches, including a Community Shield winner against Leicester.

Having already clinched the first silverware of the season, United will roll up to Dean Court in confident mood. Bournemouth boasted the second-worst home defence in the league last year – only Villa conceded more – and managed just four clean sheets in front of their own fans.

Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez head the chasing pack behind the big Swede.

Selected by just 5% and 4% respectively for Leicester’s trip to crisis club Hull, the duo look very viable differentials this weekend – both bagged double-figure goal hauls on their travels last term, with 12 of Mahrez’ 17 strikes arriving on the road.

Further down, Eden Hazard (3%) and Burnley’s Andre Gray (2%) offer form alternatives for their home encounters against West Ham and Swansea.

Having scored nine times over the summer, the latter, in particular, could prove a very brave punt – the Swans conceded in all nine away fixtures under Francesco Guidolin in 2015/16 and are reeling from the departure of former skipper Ashley Williams.

    1) Redmond and Erikson/Alli

    Or

    2) Lamela and Tadic

    Why?

Toss up for me. Not much in this one. I have Redmond/Alli and can't give a valid justification for why.

I have Alli/Redmond. Not confident at all that Redmond will really pan out. Lamela played well at the end of last season and has played well in the pre-season. Meanwhile, Tadic, unlike Redmond, is nailed. So I seem to be acting contrary to logic.

        Yeah it's a tough one.

I feel like spending the 8.5 is easier to downgrade / straight swap. Instead of spreading in over 7 and 7.5

      Gray and Negredo for me.
Carroll is a good option in an exciting looking West Ham team, but they have a couple of tough opening fixtures.

    Anyone thinking about picking Oscar?
Looks likely to start, and will be starting just behind Costa.

I want some attacking Chelsea coverage, and so far with my budget it's between Willian, Pedro or Oscar.

    Good evening/morning fellow tinkermen!

Thoughts on this for a lineup.....

    foster
    evans - amat - nsue
    hazard - firmino - walcott - feghouli
    Ibra - vardy - aguero

Really want sanchez instead of the risky/insane punt walcott but i'm expecting lots of goals so could be a good differential?

Which 21.0 pair will get more points this season?

    A Hazard and Kane

    B Sanchez and Vardy

Im beginning to lean strongly towards B. Sanchez is generally a better fpl assest than Hazard. Scores more, more explosive, easier to captain, free kicks etc. Meanwhile Vardy seems much better at getting assists than Kane whilst maintaining an equal scoring record.

I think it depends on leicester. If they drop down the table too far it could well be A. However say they are top 6 at least i might favour B.

Weak up front but strong elsewhere.

You should play around with potential transfer that you think you might want to make in a few weeks. Then you'll know how much it costs to jump on the Ozil/Payet/Hazard bandwagon.

but if you're dead set on playing 4-5-1 all season, that's a pretty good team.

  29. Casp123
    • 10 Years

    Foster / Jakupovic
Stones, Friend, Souare / Amat, Pieters
Hazard, Firmino, Ayew, Redmond / Hojberg
    Aguero, Ibrahimov, Gray

I have 1.5m in the bank. Happy with the budget defence as I'll use Stones + 2 and their fixtures are all decent.

Ayew, Hojberg and Gray are my question marks - who should I upgrade? I'm considering Tadic, Lamela, Feghouli and Carroll but not sure how to improve this. I'm really struggling to find an upgrade on strikers priced 7.0-8.5.

    Any thoughts?

Thanks both. Tadic better than Ayew? I could go:

          B) Ayew->Lamela and Hojberg->Deulofeu/Townsend
          C) Ayew-> Eriksen and put faith in Redmond as Hojberg would be permabenched
