The countdown to gameweek 15 begins properly once the fixture list has suffered its weekly frisking. This week we restrict our view of the schedule to the next four gameweeks, assessing the Christmas programme right up until the Boxing Day encounters. Here’s our take on those sides lavished with gift-wrapped weeks ahead, and those left unwrapping the fixture equivalent of a multi-pack of socks.

The Strong

Man United

Four one-nil wins in the last five, interrupted by a blip against Newcastle at Old Trafford, has clearly demonstrated that Alex Ferguson has instilled a desire to grind out wins; to cut the frills and concentrate on defending a lead. It’s perhaps not surprising to find that this spell immediately followed the 6-1 humiliation in their own backyard by neighbours City.

Christmas promises to see the three points continuing to flow, with fixtures that should bring them every opportunity to record four straight wins. A trip to Craven Cottage in gameweek 17 will provide the sternest test but, around that, home clashes with Wolves and Wigan and a trip to QPR should bring further defensive returns and the possibility of a greater attacking output.

The trick will be to identify those players immune to festive rotation – prospects like Phil Jones, Nani and Wayne Rooney will appear on our Christmas lists, although the latter has largely been cast aside and overshadowed by attractions elsewhere. The recent injury to Javier Hernandez may just see Rooney return to a role spearheading the United attack – that could signal a return to scoring ways having failed to find the net in his last eight league appearances.

Newcastle

Newcastle will go into Christmas ravaged by injuries in defensive areas with Steven Taylor ruled out and Fabricio Collicini looking likely to join him on the sidelines with a thigh problem. That could well see a shift away from their defensive players – sources of Fantasy points which have proved so popular over what has been an outstanding season for Alan Pardew’s men. Attention may now turn to their attacking assets, who could now face greater responsibility as the Magpies are forced to notch two or more goals in the hunt for wins.

The fixture list suggests that the Magpies could yet go into the New Year in good spirits. Home clashes with Swansea and West Brom look great platforms for Demba Ba to boost his goal tally. Likewise, the trip to Bolton on Boxing Day appears to hand Ba and his team-mates every opportunity to hit the goal trail and cover the cracks created by an ailing back four.

Liverpool

The reversal at the Cottage last night did little to aid Liverpool’s stuttering form, but Kenny Dalglish will be optimistic that a change in fortune is just around the corner. The home clash with QPR this weekend looks an important stepping stone that could set Liverpool up for a run of positive results over the Christmas period. Trips to Villa and Wigan carry potential, while a Boxing Day clash with Blackburn looks to have goals in it, with Steve Kean’s defence continually struggling to plug the gaps at the back.

Fantasy managers will be wary however and, beyond the obvious talents of Jose Enrique in defence, may struggle to find a way to profit from a potentially positive run of results. Luis Suarez continues to falter in front of goal and seems destined to be embroiled in controversy that threatens to blight his season. While his stock falls, Craig Bellamy could be worthy of some attention in the mid-price bracket, particularly if Suarez earns himself a two-match ban for last night’s altercation with the Fulham throngs.

Blackburn

Rovers are yet to claw their way out of trouble but, of all the sides down in the basement, they appear to have the goal power to inspire a climb up the table. Yakubu’s four-goal haul revealed the Nigerian as a major target for Fantasy managers over Christmas and, with the fixture list falling kindly, it’s difficult to write his bandwagon off as a passing fad.

Steve Kean takes his side to Sunderland this weekend, providing the opponents for Martin O’Neill’s baptism in front of the Stadium of Light fans. O’Neill will approach with caution, with Blackburn confident of spoiling the party, having scored in every away game so far this season.

The goals should continue with Ewood Park encounters against West Brom and Bolton to come, before a testing trip to Anfield on Boxing Day. Kean, with a little help from Yakubu and co, may well have steered his ship out of choppy waters by then.

Also consider

Everton – The home defeat to Stoke burst the Everton bubble, while a trip to the Emirates this weekend seems unlikely to offer a change in fortune. Home encounters with Norwich and Swansea follow however – that pairing, together with a Boxing Day visit to Sunderland, offer David Moyes’ side an opportunity to go into 2012 with a more positive outlook.

Bolton – The Trotters are flailing right now – scrambling for goals and points to keep their head above water. Unfortunate to be reduced to 10-men at Spurs, they will have Gary Cahill available to them for the visit of Villa thanks to today’s successful red card appeal. Owen Coyle will hope that he can help inspire an improvement, with the fixture list at least providing some assistance going into the New Year.

Swansea – Brendan Rodgers’ side just aren’t able to build on their form at the Liberty Stadium, failing miserably to stem the tide of goals on their travels. Home encounters with Fulham and QPR in the next four gameweeks offer the chance for further clean sheets and points, while visits to an under strength Newcastle and inconsistent Everton, could also offer profits.

The Weak

Wigan

It’s difficult to imagine that the Latics will be fuelling any Fantasy lineups going into the Christmas period. A failed dalliance with Victor Moses aside, Wigan have been devoid of any temptations and are now about to embark on a run of opponents that looks set to cut them adrift at the foot of the table.

The pundits are writing them off and it’s hard to argue, particularly as Wigan are set to go into the New Year off the back of fixtures against Chelsea, Liverpool and United.

Fulham

The victory over Liverpool will give Martin Jol’s side a much-needed foothold in an inconsistent season. Before Jol and Fantasy managers can begin to get excited about the prospects down at the Cottage however, the fixture looks set to dampen the enthusiasm and lead them a precarious route through the Christmas programme.

Fulham will be the latest side to contend with Swansea’s possession football at the Liberty Stadium this weekend, that’s followed by a potentially profitable home clash with Bolton. After that, however, Jol’s men will take on United and Chelsea in a Christmas double header that will likely leave them with a hangover before the New Year’s festivities have even begun.

QPR

Joey Barton and the odd budget defender aside, it seems unlikely that too many Fantasy managers will go into December relying on any of Neil Warnock’s squad. Heidar Helugson has shown consistency of late and, at a budget price, has attracted recent investment. His new owners may well be set for disappointment however, as Rangers prepare to face three of the top defences in the league, in addition to a Sunderland side who could well be about to enjoy a renaissance under Martin O’Neill.

Goals look hard to come by then, while clean sheets could also be a struggle in a difficult month that could see the R’s hovering over the trapdoor.

Also be wary of…

Aston Villa – One goal in seven starts for Gabby Agbonlahor, two in the last five for Darren Bent – it’s clear that Villa are struggling in attack. Having kept just a single clean sheet in seven, there’s also genuine concern that Villa on the slide. With Liverpool and Arsenal at Villa Park next, the trip to the Reebok this weekend looks vital if Alex McLeish is going to enjoy any kind of Christmas comfort.

Man City – City have conceded a goal or more in their last seven league games but have scored a stunning 25 goals to compensate. Despite Roberto Mancini stressing the need for clean sheets, with Chelsea and Arsenal up next for City, it seems likely that the “score more than them” policy will have to continue, at least until the gameweek 17 clash with Stoke.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yeah he has to hit form again eventually.. I plan to get him as well but it will kinda ruin the whole team balance. Which set do you prefer, Rooney+4.8mid or Nani+Sturridge?

    Ok couple of questions...

    1) Ruddy or Howard this weekend. Ruddy at home to newcastle surely has more chance of keeping a CS than Howard away to ARS

    2) pick one out of Simpson, O'Hara and Shawx to play.. Currently on Simpson and subs are OH and SHX in that order

      I'd play Simpson & Ruddy.

Both your keepers have tough fixtures but Howards is definitely worse and away from home. I don't fancy O'Hara or Shwx to score anything substantial this week but you might just sneak a cleanie from Simpson (especially if Colccini is back)

      1) Ruddy, easily.

      2) O'Hara for me. Can't see a NEW or STO cleanie, and O'Hara is one of WOL's best chance of any attacking returns. Subs Shawx then Simpson - Shawx has more attacking threat.

      1) Neither will keep a cleanie IMO, so 50/50
      2) Tough one, I see 2 pointers for all 3, maybe O'Hara as he could sneak a goal/assist?

Looking good. I'd perhaps consider Simpson in Browns place to spread your team coverage a bit but that is definitely a matter of preference rather than an obvious choice.

Hmm, embarrasingly I brought him in this week (before the Fulham game - couldn't wait as was doing a double trade that involved P Jones and his price was going up).....

Unless he gets banned I had planned to keep him until at least GW18. All up in the air now though - if he gets banned soon Ba will probably come in. If later then Studge.

Bench: Would be tempted to put Simpson ahead of Reo-Coker.

      RMT: 6/10.

You lose points for having RC in your team.
Further points are lost for kneejerking in Jones and Vermalen.
Those two give you three budgeritoes in midpark which makes me nervous somehow.
Tempted to boot Suarez but not before QPR.

Otherwise, a good team. Best of luck 😉

No transfers this week as a protest for all those that kneejerk which is 99% of this site.

Well, as I said to Keith below, if you are going to do Nani, then this would be the week to get him in. He's a bit of a homeboy and I've kept faith for these fix.

Just realized can't afford Nani. Yikes! Not convinced about Smalling & Utd's CS potential?

You don't need transfers with that team, Jafa. Your bench is in my playing 11 for this GW - just shows how awesome your team is / how terrible mine is 😉

No. VDV is back from injury so it seems daft to get rid now if like me you've had a couple of miserable weeks watching Ade and Bale ripping it up while you slide down your mini-league. The time to get rid was then.

I brought Nani in this week (for Eagles) but VDV aint going anywhere til his hammy snaps (or my temper)

There's a risk .. Nani could do nothing or just 1 assist. VdV could grab handful points.

Anyway, I'm considering it too. I might do it if...

      1. Nani doesn't play 90 minutes tonight..
      2. There's a message from Harry that VdV won't start on this weekend..

Maybe leave the transfer for this week as Sess has a new coach and a great fixture. Anything could happen there. But if you do decide to do the transfer I'd choose Nani. Think it could be the start of a nice run for both player and team (Disclaimer: spoken through red-tinted glasses 😉 )

If I were you I'd definitely play Richards over McAuley. His attacking potential far outweighs the fact he's playing Chelsea. I'd even play Naylor over him too.

West Brom have kept 2 cleanies all season. The last one coming 8GWs ago. McAuley offers no attacking potential either.

If you are going to do Nani, then you might as well have him for the WOL game this week. He was averaging something like 8-9pts for home games last season and 2 pts in away games.

Quite a few home players on your team this week. Some selection dilemnas on the bench. I have benched Naylor and Dyer but played the Milkman.

3 WBA cs already this year. May be more to come. Seems to go up for odd punt at goal too looking at the stats.

Got Naylor, Brown, Enrique and McAuley all at home this week. Reluctantly benched Naylor but tight between him and Big Mac.

Been ages since I did this RMT thingy, so any words or advises is much appreciated,

    Vorm, Ruddy
    Jones, Shawcross, Naylor, Simpson, Brown
    Silva, VDV, Bale, Nani, Dyer
    VP, Ade, Sturridge

Team is currently with Ramsey and Bendtner, which 4 point hits do you like better, Nani + Sturridge or Rooney + 4.8 mid?

Would it be necessary to have a Pool coverage? Probably thinking of VDV for Adam if his hammy is still acting funny.

Funnily enough I think the Hernandez injury plus Jones' versatility could be a big blessing for the Rooney owners.

I can see Rooney pushed back upfront with Wellbeck/Berba and a CM consisting of any 2 from Jones/Giggs/Fletcher/Carrick.

To be honest Nani + Studge is the safe option but if you have a huge pair then Rooney is the transfer to go for.

Thanks Gaffer. Im on the fence but leaning towards Rooney, but the thought of having both Dyer and someone like B.Johnson means I will most certainly to only get 2 points every week from 1 of my midfield spot.

          I havent got a big pair 🙁

So I couldnt do the Rooney one. But just feel it could be the start of something beautiful for Rooney. He just needs to play upfront and he's as dangerous as any FF prospect

Like every online forum, I think we are in need of standard acronyms as well. For eg. if you're playing bridge, you'll see a wpp, wpo, nh, typ/o, etc.

    NS - Nice Scoring
    FAH - For A Hit
    RVPFC - RVP For Captain
    WC - Wildcard
SIRO - Subs in right order
    RMT - Rate my team
    WVDVS - Will VDV Start

Let's get it going....and save this forum a lot of time and effort in typing extra characters 😛

Besides the first 3-4 weeks expensive mids (aka Bale, VDV, Mata, Silva, Nani to a lesser extent) have been performing better.
Also, mid priced strikers > mid priced mids?

And the fact United score a goal a game.

What do people think about a defense of

    Evra/Jones/Vidic?

Man Utd seem the best for clean sheets against anyone, especially now with easy opponents and Jones/Vidic both off goal threats + bonus...Evra can even chip in with assists.

Means no more Nani though 🙁

He will do well soon with the easier fixtures. His free kicks, penalties and corners will put him in good stead. He had a really tough run of fixtures early on in the season but it clears up after the arsenal game. I am actually considering getting him in after this week

The fact that they failed to keep clean sheets against QPR, Wigan, Fulham, Wolves and Stoke is enough to push me away from any temptation..
7.8 is a lot for a defender when all he has going for him is penalties, especially considering there is cheaper options that are getting more returns in both attack and defence.

Baines is the only expensive defender that is justified.

Don't be mesmerized by United's CS. They could easily go on the offensive & start slipping defensively. Smalling's the only defender that is worth getting. Jones is way too expensive now.

I honestly believe Vidic over the next few weeks will score a coouple and CS will continue..

Ive had Baines all year and had enough of him.. The everton defence is weak so CS are few and far between and although he has produced some great crosses.. there is no one there to put them in the back of the net

There'd have to be. Pretty ridiculous to think that our pin head of a universe is the only one.

'Life' probably won't be liitle and green and go bleep. More like an electro static cloud.

If you can't do Suarez then the transfer (and a striker spot with Suarez in there) is wasted as getting rid of RVP and Ade is pointless.

anything y'all would do with this lot? 1 FT and 0.5 in the bank:

    vorm/westwood
    jagielka/ward/vermaelen/naylor/turner
    silva/bale/nani/drenthe/sessegnon
    yakubu/rvp/adebayor

thanks for any thoughts! 236 points in last 3 GWs, so not in dire straits, but thoughts are welcome!

    What do you think about:

    Jose Enrique (In) Santos (out)
    Assou-Ekkoto (In) Clichy (out)

I do want to get in Vermaelen and Richards but they are too common in my league

btw: check out http://eplfantasyguide.blogspot.com/ .....another good site with good info

this might sound stupid but i'd advise to always play your best team.

and by that i mean don't not get players you want just becuase other teams have them.

differentials are OK but if the better players start scoring then you're going to lose gound in your leagues.

The Phil Jones thing is vexing me. People have been making a killing by having him but I just don't like rotation risks. Where's he going to play this week?

I've gone with Jones/Vidic/Richards with Wilkson/Simpson on the bench

I feel if Jones misses one game, Simpson can easily make up for it with his easy fixtures

Similar.. gone with Jones/Richards/Enrique with N.Taylor/McAuley on the bench.. you can always rely on swansea worst comes to worst.. and when jones plays it's 6 points almost guaranteed

he isn't that much of a rotation risk. Will probably only miss games in order for him to get a rest, so no more than 5 all season I reckon

As far as injury risks go, he's proven to be fairly stable. Hell, he's even been pushed into midfield so he can still play. Fergie loves him - did you see how happy Jones' goal made him at the weekend?

Looking at his history, he has only been fully rested once. That was when he played in the PL, CL and both England friendlies during a short period. In fact, he played the most minutes out of any England player during the international break so was definitely due a rest.

He's only had two games when he has been a sub. First game of the season and against Man City. City being the only surprise, with Evans getting the nod. What happens? Evan's gets a red.
