Nemanja Vidic has suffered suspected knee ligament damage in tonight’s 2-1 Champions League defeat in Basel.

Vidic was stretchered from the proceedings a couple of minutes before half-time to be replaced by Jonny Evans with his team 1-0 down. United have tonight confirmed that they will await scans before offering a prognosis on the injury, although their early report indicates that the player himself fears he has sustained medial ligament damage having left the stadium on crutches.

The possibility of the United skipper being sidelined suddenly offers up a few quandaries for Fantasy managers.

There’s no doubt his return from a calf injury in gameweek 10 had an immediate effect on a previously shaky back line. The last five games have seen United return four clean sheets, with only a Demba Ba penalty preventing a clean sweep. Ahead of a favourable run of fixtures, the likes of Phil Jones have been transferred in by vast number of Fantasy numbers, with the champions’ defence looking formidable with Vidic alongside Rio Ferdinand in the heart of the back-four.

An absence for Vidic would surely have a significant effect on the plans of Fantasy managers. If he is out, only Patrice Evra could be the closest United defender to being nailed on but their resilience will surely drop without their skipper- can we really expect the same sort of defensive returns?

Jonny Evans could be set for a recall to the first team, having missed the last four and at 4.5 in FPL, could perhaps be a decent punt, given the cut-price outlay required. It remains to be seen how much game time he’d get if Vidic is confirmed as sidelined for a prolonged spell, although it’s worth noting that Alex Ferguson played him in nine of United’s first ten fixtures.

Phil Jones, at 6.4 and rising, looks set for more investment, with his adaptability vital to his game time, while Chris Smalling, at 5.2, could also come into plenty folks’ thinking.

We await further news from the United camp in the next 24-hours.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

People seem happy with City and Utd out of CL considering the rotation. Is it just me who really can't see how Mancini and SAF will keep most players happy without playing them in the league? Nasri, Johnson, Balotelli, Milner for example surely want some gametime....

Was mostly thinking about city. But surely United will have the same problem as well. Considering City vs. Man U in the FA cup, where one club has to go and even less gametime to share within the squad

They will both now be in the Europa League which opens up serious cans of worms.

Rotation will play a part and now they will be European playing games later in the week.

Nasri made his bed, now he can lie in it. Bitter still...

But to your point, I think you're right that it doesn't necessarily make things clearer. If anything, it creates more unknowns when things resume because there is no precedent

Just a bit unsure about people's happiness from a FPL perspective, since I don't think that City and United will play their best formation week in week out just because they are out of the champions league

I'm hoping the second string players will be limited to the Euro Vase. Could work in the favour of Aguero / Nani / Silva owners hopefully?

Think I'm going to go for Ba.

Newcastle got nice fixtures coming up and I can get Mata for Sinclair next week with the money I save from Rooney to cover me for Chelsea attacking players.

this decision is annoying as the man city game for chelsea makes you think ba, but fast forward just 1 week and there's a 6.7 poacher who plays for a side who's likely to score more goals, is a longer term choice (no african nations) and a more prolonged good run of fixtures.
a not very helpful conclusion, both good value options

What's the difference between this season and last season, did Scholes play a lot? Vidic being out has been a massive blow, looks like he'll be out again for a while aswell. Biggest problem has been players like Nani not performing, he carried Utd at times last season. Not sure who is available that will strengthen Utd in January? I'd wait until the summer, Redknapp will probably become England manager and Modric may become available.

Not much difference with Man U but City, and Chelsea both invested much more than United. I'm not saying they can't still challenge but who was there biggest signing? Ashley Young? Why didn't fergie spend the money. If I were a united fan I'd like to know the answer. Fergie has done a great job, and had unbelievable success but you can't sit back and watch your rivals buy better players than you year after year and expect to keep winning titles.

De Gea, Jones, Young? They are all big signings.

Chelsea signed Romeu, Mata, Lukaku and Merieles. I wouldn't say they invested much more then Utd.

But aren't Man U one of the biggest clubs in the world? A keeper, a promising youngster and a class but inconsistent winger?

Really? Is that as much as there fan base deserve?

What did you want Fergie to do? Quality players just weren't available in the Summer. Tottenham wouldn't sell Modric, we couldn't get M'Villa for £20m, that is a mediocre French club wanting £25m for their star player!

I'm not fussed what he does. I'm just surprised he didn't pay the cash for the players he needed. He's the football genius not me.

Presumably he thought the squad he had assembled was going to challenge for the champions league and win the title. He was wrong.

City have proved that players become available if the cash is there but I suppose if he doesn't want to pay over the odds and united fans are cool with that then it's none of my business.

Cleverley's been missed, Fletcher hasn't been the same since his virus...but the fact that we miss a youngster just back from loan and a soild but unspectacular defensive mid so much tells its own story.

              Indeed.

Cleverley was basically a Leicester, Watford and Wigan player more than United one so the fact you now miss him...

It means something quite stark in reality.

Arsenal is a boy who works hard through out the year but fails to succeed.
Manchester City is a spoilt child who purchases all the expensive books but is never interested in reading them.
Liverpool is a child who is very much proud of the academic achievements of his grand father.
Manchester United is a boy who just performs in the final exams and tops the class.
    Finally,
Chelsea is a boy who fails and puts the blame of failure on his teachers and then his family finds a new teacher for him every year.
P.S. Not my joke. Off online website

    Vorm (Cerny)

    Smalling Brown Samba (Simpson Monk)

Nani (c) Bale Silva Mata Eagles

    Van Persie Adebayor (yakubu)

In defense i'll rotate simpson with brown
    also rotating monk with samba
attacking wise i'll rotate eagles with yakubu

5.4 seems a bit rich for a Blackburn defender to me... Of course I'm considering Gary Cahill so I can't talk about overpaying for defenders/chasing defender goals on bad teams.

I think your DF needs to be far more attacking than that. Smalling, Simpson & Monk (and probably Brown) have very little attacking threat, so you're relying on their clean sheets alone. You've got players from the right teams to get cleanies, but there are probably more attacking alternatives even from those teams.

Well I would rather all English teams were through to next round (I'm Scottish and don't have a particular fav team as just love the whole premiership) but what a fantastic selection of teams in the last 16.

    2x German
    2x English
    3x Italian
    2x French
    2x Spanish
    1x Russian
    1x Portuguese
    1x Swiss
    1x Cypriot

Best mixture of clubs for a long time........

I was gonna do the same but also have Richards, concerned about his injury. Also concerned that Arsenals clean sheet prospects don't look much better than City's, and TV can't keep up his attacking form surely?

Looking at the fixtures I think Arsenal will keep more clean sheets than City over the next couple of months and there defence is alot better with Vermaelen in it, 3 clean sheets in 6 games that he started. I think he'll be good for some more goals too, he's probably the most attacking centre-back in the league.

Need some help. 2FT, need to get rid of S Taylor and fed up of Ramsey. Thinking of getting Verm and Ben Arfa or another mid up to 5.8 and going 4 at the back some weeks. Team is currently:

    Vorm, Krul
    Jones, Enrique, Walker, Saylor, Naylor
    Silva, VDV, Mata, Ramsey, Dyer
    RVP, Ade, Ba

Nope. If Cavani has touched it, UCL wouldn't give it an assist. Assist rules are different to FPL, unfortunate in this case as I had him captain.
