The Stock Check

Raheem Sterling starts the motors on another international break bandwagon, whilst Sergio Aguero may just have removed the wheels from his. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s pair of matches.

On the Rise

Raheem Sterling
We cited Sterling’s rise as a key element of Gameweek 3 in our recent Scout Mission and the City flyer duly delivered.

The two goals against West Ham, off the back of his pair of assists in the opening two Gameweeks, has now ensured that Sterling will enjoy huge interest from FPL investors over the international break.

Eden Hazard’s form and his own transfer traffic may divert from Sterling’s appeal but we’d expect further price rises before the Gameweek 4 derby clash with United.

At just 8.1, it’s difficult to argue against Sterling’s potential to at least challenge Mesut Ozil, Dimitri Payet and Riyad Mahrez in the 9.5 bracket.

Whether he’ll hit the heights of Hazard’s output remains doubtful but there’s no question that Sterling’s prospects have been significantly boosted by Pep Guardiola’s arrival.

David Silva
The crafty Spaniard undoubtedly played second fiddle to Sterling’s headline grabbing performance but his display was no less impressive.

We’ve almost overlooked what Silva can bring us a Fantasy asset and, in such a crowded midfield market, he’s unlikely to earn too much recognition.

However, he’s still a key factor in City’s defence and today’s showing highlighted that we can’t write him off.

Michail Antonio
Shifted from wing-back to an attacking role once again in the second half at the Etihad, Antonio again delivered via a far-post header. He has now scored eight headed goals since arriving in the Premier League.

Antonio’s rather withdrawn celebration on scoring may well have been targeted at Slaven Bilic, who must surely be getting the message that he needs to keep Antonio’s substantial presence in the final third.

Following the winning header against Bournemouth in Gameweek 2, Bilic remarked that he still intended to deploy Antonio in a defensive role as required. However, again today it became clear once again that the Hammers need his threat in the box.

With West Ham’s injury list clearing, Antonio certainly faces fierce competition for starts in an attacking role, so we should temper our enthusiasm. However, the potential of Antonio as a 7.0 midfield option is obvious – to Sam Allardyce and FPL managers at least.

The West Brom Defence
Tony Pulis’ rearguard became the only other side other than Manchester United to move to two clean sheets following the drab 0-0 stalemate at the Hawthorns.

Moreover, their persistent pursuit of goals from set-pieces was there for all to see.

Gareth McAuley, Craig Dawson and Jonny Evans will surely profit from further goals over the course of the season based on Sunday’s evidence.

The Baggies attack looked toothless, with Salomon Rondon isolated but, via dead-ball deliveries, their defenders look set to earn handsomely over the campaign.

In Decline

Sergio Aguero
The Argentine again mimicked Zlatan Ibrahimovic – this time mirroring his frustrating 2-point blank.

However, Aguero’s day could, conceivably, take on far more significance in the next 48-hours.

An errant swing of the arm, apparently missed by referee Andre Marriner, appeared to be aimed at West Ham’s Winston Reid who was later replaced with an injury apparently sustained in the clash.

There is already much debate on the likely consequence of Aguero’s act, with plenty of uncertainty on whether the incident was seen and will be present in Mariner’s report.

If it’s not, the FA may choose to review the footage and could then follow this up by taking retrospective action.

There is a very real possibility that Aguero will face a charge of violent conduct that would see him receive a three-match ban.

That would rule him out of the Gameweek 4 Manchester derby and the Gameweek 5 trip to Bournemouth. Aguero would serve the third match in the EFL Cup tie with Swansea City.

This is all premature, however. We can only wait on news from the FA once the referee’s report is submitted on Monday.

Kevin De Bruyne
Despite delivering a second assist of the season, the Belgian’s undoubted Fantasy potential appears to be subdued by his new central role, reducing his ability to provide open play crosses and cut inside to shoot from range.

With Sterling flourishing today, it seems unfeasible to attempt to justify De Bruyne’s lofty 10.5 price tag compared to his 8.1 and even Silva’s 8.9.

The Man City Defence
Guardiola’s defence were breached for the third game running with the 34% owned John Stones again disappointing.

Stones was withdrawn after suffering an eye problem with the City boss reassuring us post-match that tiredness, rather than an injury was the factor behind his removal. Even so, given City’s lack of clean sheets to this point, Stones looks set to suffer significant sales over the international break.

Dimitri Payet
A prolonged absence will lead to further sales as the Frenchman falls well behind the race for a slot as our heavy-hitting midfielder.

That market has now become so competitive, Payet will surely have to produce some early brilliance, once fit, to enter the race.

Bilic has indicated that Payet should return after the international break but his remaining owners are unlikely to see that out given the in-form talent in his price bracket.

Salomon Rondon
A forlorn figure leading the line for West Brom today, the Venezuelan’s potential appears to be strangled by the Baggies’ current lack of attacking ambition.

Pulis is promising plenty of signings in the window. Rondon must hope that many of them inject some much needed attacking urgency.

Nacer Chadli appears to be the first through the door.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So what kind of a start has everyone had so far?

I've had all solid weeks no spectacular weeks. Sitting at 192 points and 32k. Best start I've had in ages. There are a few players I'd like like Lukaku Arsenal mid Sterling but apart from Lamela Aguero and maybe Redmond there aren't many problems in my team. If Aguero gets banned, getting Alexis for a hit becomes easy.

Going to be a great season this since I think at all times people might have different big hitters. Too many options.

I dunno hey, most serious players owns Kun/Haz/Ibra/ManU def/Capoue and now one of Ozil/Alexis.

Take out the Foster/Jako/4m def combo and it leaves you with 6 spots to win your ML.

      - turd striker
      -1 decent defender
      - 2 midf

      ...Spots to differentiate.

I'm at 214k which is a great start for me. Getting Haz/Ibra/Aguero from the first gameweek paid off but the rest of my midfield is really misfiring. No cheap performing mids yet so I'll just have to wait and see.

I ought to be delighted with my 67 point haul on my WC. Trouble is, I'd have scored 75 with my pre-WC XI. I took out Vardy and Defoe for Ibra/Rondon, and dropped Valencia, Bailly, Baines and Drinkwater.

I think long-term I prefer my current squad but I wish I'd waited until this week 🙁

Sitting at 11k right now so a reasonable start.

Regretting my last minute decision to spend 0.5 more to upgrade McAuley to Stones.

Otherwise feel quite lucky thus far. Got Barkley in this week against my better judgement though so first FT of the season has been a failure 🙂

With 2 FTs + Aguero, Lamela and Gray (oh god why) - hoping to avoid busting my WC if all 3 are suspended. Can probably fix with a -4.

    Tadic | Hazard | Barkley | Redmond
    Aguero | Ibrahimovic | Negredo

Given Aguero gets banned how would you change this front 7 with 0.7 in the bank and 1 FT. (Accepted I'll probably have to -4 but not too keen on a -8).

Question marks on Tadic, Barkley, Redmon, Aguero mainly.

Would you factor the following into WC picks. Team totally unbalanced with regard to home and away. Last week has 9 home and 2 away. This week at least 8 away. Does not show any signs of stopping. RMT tool shows 10-15 point difference between odd and even weeks.

I don't really see the issue, unless you're rotating specific players then why does it matter if you have 5 H/ 6 A one week and 6 H/ 5A the next or 11 H one week and 11 A the next? End result is the same.

Better to worry about having fixtures vs easy teams.

double up defence is a disaster waiting to happen but it's worked so far so why change. Don't lose Evans or Williams I think. How about Gray to Defoe? Very nice team with 1.3 ITB btw. You could upgrade Friend but then you just have a bench headache each week.

Cheers man, yeah that was my thinking also. Double up on WB & MU defensively is worrying but will not change it until they give me good reason to I suppose. Really think with the attacking potential of Valencia this season it may just be worth it (and Jose does like a cs)!
I like Defoe a lot but Gray hasnt done much wrong (taking that he wont get a ban, that is).

I have Gray lamela and aguero.
I also want to get rid of Ramirez.
Should I WC? Or wait for aguero/lamela news before I do it?

No. Too soon to WC even if Aguero and/or Lamela are suspended.

Similar situation myself but also needed to get Funes Mori out. I think Aguero will get a ban and it would be good time to play WC. I left Gray though hoping that he won't get banned (not too manybetter options in his price range so rather upgrade my midfield).
I also have 3 MU players in my squad so I'm okay with Aguero missing next week either way. GL 😉

    People !

There's just 3 gameweeks gone. Do not wildcard. You will have little or no benefit from it so soon into the season. You cannot judge how poorly or how well players will do based on three games. Maybe 8 - 10 weeks when you can see how consistently good/useless players are will it be worth wildcarding. Take a few hits and remember you have 4 subs that can possibly avoid dropping 4 pointers. Too many transfers being kneejerked with so little thought that players can take a few weeks to get into matchfitness etc.

    1. jia you
      • 9 Years

fair point, but imagine that you have 4-5 players that will not get game time for whatever reason (eg. Funes Mori, Aguero, Lamela, Gray, Mkhi).
Would you still take a hit for 16 point? (curious)

      1. GreennRed
        • 14 Years
        9 years, 5 months ago

Take only enough hits to field 11 players or possibly 10, based on number of games players will be suspended for, not nailed on, injury extent. Why take 16 point hit if the 3 outfield players on your bench will get gametime? Aguero may only miss 2 games. Easy to get out, not easy to get back in. From the vid I saw it looked like Reid got hit but over-reacted the contact. Might not miss any games.

Yeah (if you have a strong bench, no problem), but fielding a super weak team is not a good stategy if you are ahead or if you are chasing imo 😉
But you are correct there are some crazy posts on here, where ppl have super strong teams and as asking WC advice!

The extra value you gain in your team by wildcarding now whilst the casuals are active allows you to be more flexible with 4 point hits further in the season.

I wildcarded last night, but I'm only trying to convince myself.

      1. GreennRed
        • 14 Years

You'll get very little extra value I think. Waiting for a double rise in some players and then selling them for 0.1m profit per player. A lot of these players are rising for a good reason and not just down to sheepish behaviour or 'casuals' as you refer to.

        Seriously a few factors here
International break has always bee. Picked as time for WC. However with changes on wildcard transfers not counting increase in team value will not be so good
Those doing well will WC to hold position
Those not doing well will WC in hopes of catching up.

Play it when you need it most. For a lot it will be best used this week. Fitting in haz, Sanchez/Ozil when you have mahrez and firmino instead whilst-navigating bans and injuries is best done with a wc before prices go too high. Then you will have to compromise elsewhere.

Discussion time, even if Aguero isnt banned, is he really essential? We have Aguero+Redmond=Costa+Ozil, or
    Aguero+7.5= Sanchez+Costa

Is Aguero really as good as 2 big hitters?

Haha, when Kun is firing he's def essential. In saying that if Sterling can go on a run, he could end up cheap city att cover allowing mid big hitters. It will get interesting yet I feel...

No you got to gain .2 first or it does not work. You I my get .1 for every .2 gained.

Why would you want to do that? Do you want Fer in your final team or not? You won't make any money on him btw...he needs to side 0.2m for you to make 0.1m.

Fer is now 5.2.. But agreed, you gain .1m.. Not worth a trade out for someone of the same calibour that's for sure

You can gain team value this way especially over internationally break. Get in possible .2 risers then just before start of GW get in players you actually want with the profits. Does not work as well anymore though as WC transfers don't count to price rises and falls anymore.

Not really an amount of changes - more the quality of the changes. Ideally it is best to wait until GW6/7 because we'll have a better idea of who to get. However, if you have 3 bans, 2 injuries, 3 players out of form etc it may force your hand.

I am happy with my team so far, even I expected more of some players (Tadic, Rondon...). Had 2 FT and did Deu -> Mirallas before the price fall/rise.
Try to keep patience but think, there is some arsenal coverage needed?
Should I save my FT, even if Kun/Lamela get a ban to replace them for gw5?

Tadic was a season keeper for me. Maybe knee jerk but he is gone. Maybe saints finally reached point where you can't keep selling and still do it and new manager too. If Fonte goes they are in trouble he is the gel.

Fail for me. UTD were interested but he signed new deal and is staying. Been out of touch on transfer news last few days. Funny all the saints defenders that sold for big bucks with Fonte making them all look good and UTD were only offering 8 mil for Fonte.

I can imagine that Tadic will be back on the score sheets soon, but he's moving between troll and punt if you keep him.
IF there is no ban for Lamela/Kun of some reason, I think about to use my last FT for Tadic -> Antonio as I expect him to keep his MF spot after scoring twice in the last two gameweeks and fixtures are promising. Your thoughts?

    Need some advice guys.

Been trying to play it cool and controlled so far but the international break and a bad gameweek has got my wildcard trigger finger itching.

Current midfield is hazard, Barkley, delfeulou, Redmond and Fletcher.

Any love for changing it to hazard, Sanchez, puncheon, capoue and Fletcher?

I already have Ibra and Aguero and my defence is OK but little room to free up funds.

So I guess my question is, is Sanchez worth it?

With Ibra, Aguero and Sanchez, the rest of your squad will be in desperate need of funds.

Instead of Sanchez & Puncheon, I would get Sterling & Lamela/Antonio/Lallana

Good team but you have the play Diomande or Capoue each week problem. Might be worth it for the big 4 attackers though. Hope you had Gibson from the start. Sure beat Friend so far.

I had Friend but swapped to Gibson now on WC as looks better option 🙂
I see what you mean with Capoue/Diomande but also add Fer in to the mix with even a defender as will play 4 at the back some weeks depending on fixtures and theres a good rotation going on although some weeks it will be hard to pick.
Its a good base for now though I think whilst we await the news on Aguero ban and the end of the transfer window.
