The Stock Check

Raheem Sterling starts the motors on another international break bandwagon, whilst Sergio Aguero may just have removed the wheels from his. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s pair of matches.

On the Rise

Raheem Sterling
We cited Sterling’s rise as a key element of Gameweek 3 in our recent Scout Mission and the City flyer duly delivered.

The two goals against West Ham, off the back of his pair of assists in the opening two Gameweeks, has now ensured that Sterling will enjoy huge interest from FPL investors over the international break.

Eden Hazard’s form and his own transfer traffic may divert from Sterling’s appeal but we’d expect further price rises before the Gameweek 4 derby clash with United.

At just 8.1, it’s difficult to argue against Sterling’s potential to at least challenge Mesut Ozil, Dimitri Payet and Riyad Mahrez in the 9.5 bracket.

Whether he’ll hit the heights of Hazard’s output remains doubtful but there’s no question that Sterling’s prospects have been significantly boosted by Pep Guardiola’s arrival.

David Silva
The crafty Spaniard undoubtedly played second fiddle to Sterling’s headline grabbing performance but his display was no less impressive.

We’ve almost overlooked what Silva can bring us a Fantasy asset and, in such a crowded midfield market, he’s unlikely to earn too much recognition.

However, he’s still a key factor in City’s defence and today’s showing highlighted that we can’t write him off.

Michail Antonio
Shifted from wing-back to an attacking role once again in the second half at the Etihad, Antonio again delivered via a far-post header. He has now scored eight headed goals since arriving in the Premier League.

Antonio’s rather withdrawn celebration on scoring may well have been targeted at Slaven Bilic, who must surely be getting the message that he needs to keep Antonio’s substantial presence in the final third.

Following the winning header against Bournemouth in Gameweek 2, Bilic remarked that he still intended to deploy Antonio in a defensive role as required. However, again today it became clear once again that the Hammers need his threat in the box.

With West Ham’s injury list clearing, Antonio certainly faces fierce competition for starts in an attacking role, so we should temper our enthusiasm. However, the potential of Antonio as a 7.0 midfield option is obvious – to Sam Allardyce and FPL managers at least.

The West Brom Defence
Tony Pulis’ rearguard became the only other side other than Manchester United to move to two clean sheets following the drab 0-0 stalemate at the Hawthorns.

Moreover, their persistent pursuit of goals from set-pieces was there for all to see.

Gareth McAuley, Craig Dawson and Jonny Evans will surely profit from further goals over the course of the season based on Sunday’s evidence.

The Baggies attack looked toothless, with Salomon Rondon isolated but, via dead-ball deliveries, their defenders look set to earn handsomely over the campaign.

In Decline

Sergio Aguero
The Argentine again mimicked Zlatan Ibrahimovic – this time mirroring his frustrating 2-point blank.

However, Aguero’s day could, conceivably, take on far more significance in the next 48-hours.

An errant swing of the arm, apparently missed by referee Andre Marriner, appeared to be aimed at West Ham’s Winston Reid who was later replaced with an injury apparently sustained in the clash.

There is already much debate on the likely consequence of Aguero’s act, with plenty of uncertainty on whether the incident was seen and will be present in Mariner’s report.

If it’s not, the FA may choose to review the footage and could then follow this up by taking retrospective action.

There is a very real possibility that Aguero will face a charge of violent conduct that would see him receive a three-match ban.

That would rule him out of the Gameweek 4 Manchester derby and the Gameweek 5 trip to Bournemouth. Aguero would serve the third match in the EFL Cup tie with Swansea City.

This is all premature, however. We can only wait on news from the FA once the referee’s report is submitted on Monday.

Kevin De Bruyne
Despite delivering a second assist of the season, the Belgian’s undoubted Fantasy potential appears to be subdued by his new central role, reducing his ability to provide open play crosses and cut inside to shoot from range.

With Sterling flourishing today, it seems unfeasible to attempt to justify De Bruyne’s lofty 10.5 price tag compared to his 8.1 and even Silva’s 8.9.

The Man City Defence
Guardiola’s defence were breached for the third game running with the 34% owned John Stones again disappointing.

Stones was withdrawn after suffering an eye problem with the City boss reassuring us post-match that tiredness, rather than an injury was the factor behind his removal. Even so, given City’s lack of clean sheets to this point, Stones looks set to suffer significant sales over the international break.

Dimitri Payet
A prolonged absence will lead to further sales as the Frenchman falls well behind the race for a slot as our heavy-hitting midfielder.

That market has now become so competitive, Payet will surely have to produce some early brilliance, once fit, to enter the race.

Bilic has indicated that Payet should return after the international break but his remaining owners are unlikely to see that out given the in-form talent in his price bracket.

Salomon Rondon
A forlorn figure leading the line for West Brom today, the Venezuelan’s potential appears to be strangled by the Baggies’ current lack of attacking ambition.

Pulis is promising plenty of signings in the window. Rondon must hope that many of them inject some much needed attacking urgency.

Nacer Chadli appears to be the first through the door.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

All these potential bans fit into my FPL plan perfectly:

    1) Sit here looking bewildered as activate their WC's whilst I don't know what to do.
    2) Freeze like a deer in the headlights as people with knowledge talk about five different strategies.
    3) Panic just before the dadline and take some hits.

I'm looking at potentially shipping for one of - Baines, Williams, Shaw, Bailly, Blind.

Not sure he's going to miss any matches though so might be worth keeping at £5m, depends on other transfer issues that need sorting.

    If all suspended...

Lamela, Aguero, Gray > Sanchez, Lukaku and Benteke (-4) is on the cards :/

Seem like the best 2 strikers for the next 2 games or so. WC to get Kun back or even just a -4 possible with Sanchez/Lukaku being the placeholder spots.

    Lukaku - sun, MID, sun
    benteke - mid, STO, bou

    Foster / Jak
Baines / Holgate / Shaw (Amat / Kingsley)
Sanchez / Hazard / Snodgrass (monitoring) / Fer (Capoue)
    Defoe / Ibra / Kun

    What do you think?

Hi Guys and Girls. So as we sit and wait to hear the news on Kun, Lamela and Gray, I'm playing around with WC options. 0.2 ITB and 1 FT.
    Currently team before WC:

    Foster; Heaton
Shaw ; Friend*; Stones*; Evans; Amat
    Townsend*; Hazard; Barkley; Tadic*; Capoue
    Gray*; Ibra; Kun*

Main plan was to dump Gray (length depending) who'll most likely get a ban and deal with the midfield problems later, but with the possible Kun ban, I can maybe sort it all out with a WC:
    Friend -> Souare
    Stones -> Williams
    Townsend -> Sterling
    Tadic -> Cazorla
Gray -> Benteke (Or keep Gray if it's a 1 game ban)
    Aguero -> Lukaku

Leaves me with 1.6 or 2.5 ITB if I change Gray. Which allows me to do Ibra to Aguero in 1 FT when he's back.

What do you guys think? WC if Aguero gets the ban? or not?

Your thoughts and comments are most welcomed. Thanks 🙂

If both Lamela and Kun get banned,
Kun + Lamela -> Lukaku + Alexis (for -4) would be the easy escape way I guess? I confess that I want it to be realised interestingly because otherwise I don't know what to do with my team.

    Heaton Foster
    Valencia Stones*** Friend* Soare** Amat
    Hazard Lamela Townsend** Redmond** Ramirez**
    Kun Ibra Rondon
    1,5 ITB
    (* injured, ** useless, *** both)

Would you wildcard with this team? If none is banned, my B plan is Townsend + Redmond -> Ozil + 4,5 (possibly Maloney depending on Snod injury) by the way..

Are you sure about that? Only if you make a transfer it is 100% Active. No transfers I think you can change. Might be wrong

        Current team is

        Foster Heaton
        Shaw Williams McCauley Souare Amat
        Hazard Ozil Barkley Redmond Capoue
        Aguero Ibra Stuani

Nothing in the bank, 1 FT, wildcard already played in wk2

        Here is my thought process.

The goalkeepers are a solid rotating pair. I see Jaku in many teams, thats seems reasonable too even if jaku loses place, foster is good enough to start most games as a fire and forget option. All in all though, im happy with what i have here.

In defence, the premium slot (5.5) has shaw, val, baines and walker competing for it. I actually prefer val right now, but a sideways transfer is not really a priority at this stage. In the 5 slot, im happy with williams over stones. For budget, mccauley picks himself, souare has decent fixtures and palace seem to concede only the odd goal so he gets a stay of execution for now. Amat may or may not keep his place, i dont really care to be honest he is in the team as the 15th player because he had a 4.0 price tag. So all in all, some cosmetic touchup transfers could be done but the defence is basically set for the next 5-6 weeks.

In midfield, hazard picks himself and looks a season keeper. Ozil for me is in the same bracket and i drafted him in advance (conceding the 3rd striker spot to make room) - mane and sterling offer competition here and are fine options whilst i believe sanchez is probably out of reach. Barkley has the form and the fixtures in the mid range slot but has lamela and lallana knocking on the door for the medium term. Redmond is great value if he remains as striker he will accrue 150+ from that position, but his fixtures are pretty terrible - if southampton hit poor form will there be a temptation from the manager to rejig things? Capoue wont do anything for the rest of the season now, but is accruing value and later could be exchanged to free up a 0.2m or so. The midfield is solid with the biggest question mark hanging over redmond. An upgrade to sterling from a long term perspective would be welcomed but would mean sacrifices elsewhere.

The forward slots are where i spend most of my deliberations. I will start with the budget slot which as mentioned earlier was sacrificed to house ozil. Stauni seems like a terrible long term option. He does have some ok fixtures and rotates with Capoue, and may well rise a little more in value but given that most of the decent budget striker options live in the 6-7.5 range i do feel woefully exposed here should one of those options becomes a bandwagon (could easily have been rondon if he scored this week) - a plan to free up 1-2.5m for an upgrade is something to keep in mind. Aguero is a season keeper, no doubt. Any ban or injury is just a question of maintaining team value and covering the position whilst he is out. Often points hits are more destructive than doing nothing. Ibra has a much bigger question mark for me - at 34 despite his undoubted quality i cant see his form being sustained to justify the price tag (agueros history offers a much more comforting blanket here), whatsmore team structure is important - ibra sits in a price bracket with only kane as competition, whilst around 9m there are a bunch of strikers waiting to explode - giroud, lukaku, costa. Im actually quite annoyed at myself because ibra was in my initial team, i removed him at the start in favour of a stronger midfield (with sanchez) and then panicked into transfering him on the wildcard as my team had a bunch of injuries at the same time. I certainly have some buyers remorse on that one, but netherless he is owned by more than half of managers and consequently, weighing up the future of ibra in my team is what keeps me awake at night rather than will aguero get banned or not. Downgrading Ibra to a 9m striker saves approx 2.5m. This could either be used to upgrade redmond to sterling or stuani to a proper 3rd striker.

Now my thoughts are just the ramblings of a beleagured veteran manager and written here for my own benefit rather than yours, but im sure most people find themselves in a similar pickle (probably for most people my ozil plus stuani is their lamela/townsend plus gray/negrado/rondon). For now i hold tight, but the aguero news may well force my hand, as it gives me a chance to conduct what i call triangular team surgery where i would make use of agueros value and his suspension to spend elsewhere and then bring him back for ibra, which is the transfer i was thinking of anyway.

          sorry, it's a proper TL;DR this.

I glanced through looking for question marks but didn't see any.

Are you stating opinions or asking for feedback?

Sorry rog to be fair this is better than the swarms of people throwing out there team and asking other people to make their wc decision for them. This is only my third year on these boards but I'm finding it less and less useful

I hate speculative transfers but hey gotta look at options right?

        A - Aguero & Lamela >> Kane & Ozil -4

        B - Aguero & Lamela >> Lukaku & Sanchez -4

GW4 Wildcard team (if Aguero gets banned)

        Foster Jaku

        Shaw McAuley Baines Collins Amat

        Sterling Hazard Sanchez Capoue Bolasie

        Ibra Negredo Lukaku

Thoughts? Any better option. Plan on playing 3-4-3
