Sir Alex Ferguson has this morning ruled Nemanja Vidic out for the season with a knee injury.

The United skipper was stretchered off in Wednesday’s Champions League defeat in Basel and the injury, admittedly, did look a nasty one to those watching on.

At this morning’s press conference ahead of the home clash with Wolves, Ferguson revealed:

“It’s not unexpected but it’s still bad news. We thought it was a bad one and unfortunately he’s out for the season. He sees the specialist on Monday to work out the progress of when he has his operation. It won’t be immediately as we have to let the swelling come down. It’s a blow.”

There’s no denying Vidic’s loss is a massive blow to United’s title challenge. A 6-1 defeat at home to neighbours City forced Ferguson to go back to basics in gameweek 10. A run of 4 clean sheets in the following five fixtures coincided with his captain’s return from a calf problem and despite scoring just a single goal in each of their last seven games, United have been able to stay within touching distance of City at the summit.

Their defensive form, allied with a favourable run of upcoming fixtures, has seen many draft in members of the United back line, with Phil Jones, in particular, seeing plenty of Fantasy investment. While faith in the United defence will have been somewhat diminished by this news and transfer plans adjusted, there will still be plenty willing to reconsider alternatives.

With Rio Ferdinand established as a regular in the heart of defence once again, Fantasy managers will be hoping Jonny Evans comes to the fore, given the Irishman’s 4.4 price. Vidic’s loss is likely to lessen their stability at the back to a certain degree and Evans, therefore, would not be much of a risk at that budget price. He played in nine of United’s first team fixtures, picking up four clean sheets.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones also stand out, at 5.2 and 6.4 respectively, and offer more adaptability than Evans. Both have already played at right-back and centre half, with Jones’ central midfield duties also in his locker and may offer the greatest chance of game time over what is set to be a hectic festive period.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

We're plagued with injuries this season. Looking like we need a couple players in January now. Maybe not a defender but a creative midfielder is essential, every United fan knows it. Our list of injured players is becoming a joke!

I hope your injuries result in a drop from the top 4.

For years now Arsenal fans have complained about their injury list and other fans have pretty much told us its the result of having a squad of lightweight, young players.

Only ourselves to blame as we've played with fire in that respect.

Vidic, Ferdinand, Fabio and Rafael are seriously injury prone. Can anyone remember the last season where we didn't have a defensive injury crisis? Luckily we have Evra, Smalling, Evans and Jones to fill in.

The real problem for me is in attack. We need someone consistent. Rooney, Nani, Berbs, Young, Valencia etc are all so patchy with their form. When they're good they can be world beaters but it isn't often enough. Forget Vidic, the bigger problem atm is the injury to Hernandez who although he is not explosively good, he is consistent and can grab goals when we aren't playing well.

                A Machine?????

Six years without winning anything. Most companies would have sent that machine to the scrapheap and gone for a better model.

if you want to make the comparison to business I think Arsenal comes out quite well actually. They may not have one anything recently but they have achieved a great deal with much less debt than many other clubs.

Really? I'd say most companies would keep the model running for as long as possible! We may not have won, but we have stayed up which, considering his budget, is a massive OVERachievement.

He is the only manager across all 90 something english clubs that has made a profit from transfers.

You cant say he isnt superb. Bear in mind that we have financed a move to a bigger stadium and consistently made the knockout stages of the champions league.

And the reason we were told that we were moving was to compete with the elite teams in Europe. We are unable to compete for trophies domestically, let alone challenge Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Highbury = World Class Players + very good stadium.

Emirates = Good Players + World Class Stadium

I'm going with Evans at 4.4, yes he's crap, yes he may not play every game, yes they may not get as many cleanies, but it's 4.4. That's 0.2 more than Simpson and Naylor, if he misses the odd game I think I can bear the ignominy of having a 4.4 player on my bench.

Are you seriously going Aguero > Rooney. It is ballsy I must say.

I might join you. The reasoning is there i.e. United will be more vunerable defensively and will therefore need to go on the attack.

I must admit Rooney in was my original plan only a few weeks ago....

That miss against Basle convinced me not to get him. SO LOW on confidence, and at that price, no thanks.

Havent we seen many times this season that form > fixtures?

And when last did United score more than a goal in a game?

He's got a point to prove.

I think getting Rooney in at this moment in time is enough flare without captaining him. The damage from not captaining RVP could be massive for me in my mini-league.

It is Wolves though... at Old Trafford... doesn't Rooney have form in this fixture? πŸ™‚

    Horrendous news.

Still may different defensive options that Ferguson could go with though.

Smalling, Jones, Ferdinand, Evra is probably my preferable first choice.

    But could easily be

    Rafael/Fabio, Smalling, Ferdinand, Evra

Or Smalling, Evans, Ferdinand, Evra (with Jones in midfield rotating between defensive positions).

The injuries are starting to kick in, and I have some decisions to make.

    Here’s my team:

    Given – Scszeny
Ward (wol)- S Taylor (new) – Richards (mcy) – Jones (mun) – Warnock (avl)
    Hoolahan – Milner – Sinclair – Eagles – Walcott
    Sturridge – RVP – Adebayor

I’ve just seen that Richards is only 50/50, which means I have 3 injured players. I’d be forced to have Jones, Warnock and Ward as my rearguard. . . and Wolves are playing at Man U!!

So reluctantly I’m going to have to sell either Richards or Taylor.

Which should I sell, and who should I replace him with?
I have 0 in the bank.

It will also cost me 4 points since I used my free transfer to bring in Sturridge.

    So I need some advice.

        AHH!!! I didn't know this.
The website only says "unknown date" so I didn't know if it was only short-term.

I was reluctant because Newcastle seem to have a run of winnable fixtures coming up.

Certainly not your typical team. One week you're gonna score 90 when everyone else scores 30! Wolves and swansea rotate well for next 6 at least (my 2 keepers) so you could get a swans def in

I was looking at Williams. . . but only because the price was right.

It's the biggest blow imaginable but time for our young centre backs to step up to the plate. There's a huge dependence now on Rio, he must stay fit.

Already have VDV in. Should I sell Silver for Nani for 2 weeks?

Nope. Man city out of champs league means Silva nailed on for every prem game imo. Yes nani shoots more, but city score about 50 goals a game and Silva is fav for the assist..
