Sir Alex Ferguson has this morning ruled Nemanja Vidic out for the season with a knee injury.

The United skipper was stretchered off in Wednesday’s Champions League defeat in Basel and the injury, admittedly, did look a nasty one to those watching on.

At this morning’s press conference ahead of the home clash with Wolves, Ferguson revealed:

“It’s not unexpected but it’s still bad news. We thought it was a bad one and unfortunately he’s out for the season. He sees the specialist on Monday to work out the progress of when he has his operation. It won’t be immediately as we have to let the swelling come down. It’s a blow.”

There’s no denying Vidic’s loss is a massive blow to United’s title challenge. A 6-1 defeat at home to neighbours City forced Ferguson to go back to basics in gameweek 10. A run of 4 clean sheets in the following five fixtures coincided with his captain’s return from a calf problem and despite scoring just a single goal in each of their last seven games, United have been able to stay within touching distance of City at the summit.

Their defensive form, allied with a favourable run of upcoming fixtures, has seen many draft in members of the United back line, with Phil Jones, in particular, seeing plenty of Fantasy investment. While faith in the United defence will have been somewhat diminished by this news and transfer plans adjusted, there will still be plenty willing to reconsider alternatives.

With Rio Ferdinand established as a regular in the heart of defence once again, Fantasy managers will be hoping Jonny Evans comes to the fore, given the Irishman’s 4.4 price. Vidic’s loss is likely to lessen their stability at the back to a certain degree and Evans, therefore, would not be much of a risk at that budget price. He played in nine of United’s first team fixtures, picking up four clean sheets.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones also stand out, at 5.2 and 6.4 respectively, and offer more adaptability than Evans. Both have already played at right-back and centre half, with Jones’ central midfield duties also in his locker and may offer the greatest chance of game time over what is set to be a hectic festive period.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Maxi isn't a nailed on starter. Worth a punt, but not for a hit (in my opinion).

Nani is far more likely to play, but hasn't produced much recently and is quite pricey. He looked on good form in our Europa League qualifying match in midweek though, so maybe he's coming back to his best.

For those asking about Drenthe, I just read in the Guardian blog that he's having a late fitness test:

Not sure what to make of that, considering Moyes ruled Osman out and here it says that he too has a fitness test with Drenthe.

Not overly fussed about whether he plays this week, he's firmly on my bench, he just bloody better play next week!

Depends where you put the comma in that sentence. Either Osman and Drenthe are having tests or Drenthe and Saha are returning.

Aguero had easier games than che / ARS and he got just 6 pts. I wouldnt want a 11.2 million fwd who is not able to eplode (at least I can't see that happening in the next 2 weeks). Plus the rotation threat will be really upsetting.

Fen and Tosey, I know it's slightly crazy getting rid of aguero but fixtures are swaying me, he never plays a full 90, ba has form and fixtures and i can always get aguero back in after his tough fixtures if i'm proven wrong. Come on BA!!!

    Woodgate:

"My form hasn't been up to scratch," Woodgate told Radio Stoke.
"I have high standards and when you don't play so well, you get disappointed. I need to up my game and hopefully that will improve the team as well.
"I don't know what it is because at the start of the season I was playing well. I picked up a couple of niggly injuries, it may be that, but it's one of those things that every footballer goes through."

Er no sicknote, not every footballer goes through that.

Thanks - Was a fan of Stoke defence early on - Difficult decision for us holders of cheap defenders now.

Newcastle and Swansea hit by injuries, Fulham bad fixtures and Stoke looking vulnerable.

Could afford 6.4 for a more expensive defender - wonder about Verminator but then Arsenal hit by injuries. decisions, decisions

Start Ben Arfa and put Eagles on 1st sub just in case. Apart from his performance last week, he has been doing quite well.

Obviously at home is where most teams are gonna pick up most of their points and goalies in particular.
Blackburn, while not having kept a clean sheet all season have already played Wolves Everton Arsenal Man city Spurs Chelsea and Swansea.
Tha'ts 4 of their hardest 5 home matches over and done with.
Surely Robinson is in for a much better remainder of the season at home than he's had up to now.

Why are so many people captaining Van Persie this week?? Surely Everton won't concede more than 2 goals. I understand the importance of form, but Everton at home isn't necessarily an easy match. You would think people would want to captain someone else in order to have a differential vs players in their respective leagues. Any thoughts, or should I just captain RVP as well?!

AFC put six past them at Goodison a couple of years back. I'm captaining him. Don't see many better options... Ba maybe.

Um, 2 goals for your captain is a pretty decent return isnt it?

So... VDV to Nani? Free transfer. I also have Adebayor, but am planning on selling him for Sturridge next week, and then Mata for Bale/VDV thereafter.

I'm a big fan of the 3-man Silva | Mata | Arteta midfield. There's something wonderful about all those 'ah' sounds... a playful exoticism. Go get em, Team 'Ah'.

I reckon Fergie will keep Jones in midfield...

If Drenthe was sure to start would you play him over Baines? Based on the fact Everton are unlikely to keep a cs... 😕
