This morning we roll out our Gameweek 4 Scout Picks Squad article, which offers an insight into the decision making process behind each Friday’s selection.

Here Mark, Paul and myself will list the 18 players we think have the best chance of success across the four positions, listing them in rank order.

This article will then highlight some of the likely discussions and disagreements that will take place behind the scenes as the Scouts look to back their players and secure a place for them in the Scout Picks as well as our Spot the Differential articles.

Finally, we will also reveal the Community Champion who has been selected by our lottery to represent the community and be in with a chance of winning a £100 Amazon voucher.

Goalkeepers

Tom Heaton is the clear frontrunner to be the Scout Picks goalkeeper, coming top for all three of us as his Burnley side host Hull. As well as a strong fixture, at 4.5 he represents excellent value for a stopper who is third in the Fantasy Premier League total points table but is still owned by just 7.4% of managers. Ben Foster (4.6) is another picked by all three Scouts and as a budget back up, Paul will be pushing for Jordan Pickford’s inclusion.

The 4.0-priced Sunderland keeper, who has an 8.3% FPL ownership, looks to have secured the number one jersey while Vito Mannone faces a lengthy injury lay off. It is worth noting though that the Black Cats are still negotiating with Fifa to draft in Boavista keeper Mika Domingues, who could eventually threaten his place. Pickford’s tough fixture at home to Everton may give Mark and myself the edge with our selection of Adrian (5.0), who takes on Watford at home, should Foster or Heaton not be selected.

Defenders

In defence things get a little more contentious. We believe Hector Bellerin is worth every penny of his 6.5 FPL price tag at home to Southampton and that James Collins (4.6) is a nailed on value pick for the Hammers but the rest of our picks are markedly different.

Mark will be looking to convince Paul and I that Charlie Daniels (5.0) should be included. The 3.5% owned Bournemouth defender faces West Brom at home, but with just three penalty box touches and no shots on target this term he looks way off the pace in terms of attacking threat. West Brom are no slouches in attack, too, delivering more shots in the box than Arsenal, Leicester or West Ham this season. He may struggle to pick up a clean sheet in this tie.

Antonio Valencia (5.5) is another surprise inclusion for Mark, given Jose Mourinho’s admission that the defender arrives back from international duties just 24 hours before Saturday’s lunchtime Manchester derby.

Meanwhile, I’ll be banging the drum for Everton’s Leighton Baines (5.5), who is seemingly back on penalties. The 9% owned left back has had four goal attempts, two of which were on target, this campaign, to further boost his cause. In the same fixture Paul prefers Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt (5.0), who has already scored once as he looks to replicate last season’s strong attacking form that saw him net six times.

Cesar Azpilicueta (6.0), who has an assist and a clean sheet so far this season, is backed by Paul and myself for Chelsea’s trip to Swansea. While Mark will be hoping to convince us Branislav Ivanovic (6.0) can roll back the years and add to his 26 Premier League goals for the Blues since joining in 2008/09. Of the pair Azpilicueta has the higher ownership, of 13.4% to Ivanovic’s 6.5%.

Midfielders

Following his goal, two assists and maximum bonus last week it is no surprise to see Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (11.0) in all three Scouts’ picks. He is also top of our captain poll and drafted in by more than 140,000 FPL managers so far ahead of Gameweek 4.

Eden Hazard (10.2) also features in all three of our selections and has an FPL ownership of 31%, with Paul placing him just ahead of Sanchez. Another backed by all three of us is West Ham’s Michail Antonio (7.0), who has scored twice this season and will no longer be fielded out of position at right back, according to Hammers owner David Sullivan.

“West Ham’s clash with Watford is another eye-catching fixture. The return to action of Dimitri Payet – in his first start of the season – is perhaps a better narrative but Michail Antonio’s home form wins it for me; six of his eight strikes were in front of the Hammers’ fans last year.” – Paul

Key squabbling points will centre on the remaining midfield places, with Paul and Mark pointing to form over fixture for their selection of this week’s most transferred in player Raheem Sterling (8.2) in the Manchester Derby. Rejuvenated under Pep Guardiola, the England winger has attacking returns in all three fixtures, including a brace against West Ham in Gameweek 3.

“If you’re going to use form as a factor in selection, then I can’t see how we can overlook Sterling. There is even a case to say that his potential is heightened by Aguero’s absence, with Pep Guardiola perhaps turning to Sterling to run into central areas.” – Mark

Paul will then be joining me in pushing for the inclusion of Everton’s Ross Barkley (7.7) The 19.2% owned midfielder has a goal and assist already this season and is also the Toffees most creative player, with seven chances for his team-mates so far.

Elsewhere, Mark and I will be going head to head in a battle of two 5.5 price midfielders when Middlesbrough host Crystal Palace. I fancy my chances of victory with my pick of Crystal Palace’s Jason Puncheon, who so far out guns Mark’s selection of Middlesbrough’s Gaston Ramirez in terms of chances, crosses, passes in the final third and goal attempts.

Forwards

There is plenty of potential for fisticuffs over our forward Scout Pick selections. But before we ring the bell for round one let’s take a quick look at two players where there is broad agreement.

All three of us are backing Diego Costa (9.7) to shine away to Swansea. The Chelsea striker is in red-hot form, scoring twice so far in the Premier League and a further two times this week on international duty for Spain. He also loves to score against Swansea, netting five times over the last two seasons.

“I’m backing Chelsea at both ends of the pitch as they look to maintain their 100% record under Antonio Conte. Diego Costa’s recent exploits for club and country highlight his renaissance ahead of their trip to the Liberty.” – Paul

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.8) is another backed by all three of us, as well as by 59% of FPL managers. The joint top FPL scoring forward, with 24 points, registered a brace in his last home outing and welcomes a Manchester City side that has yet to keep a Premier League clean sheet this term.

In marked contrast, Romelu Lukaku (9.0) looks set to be a divisive figure. Mark and Paul are backing the Everton striker, who has scored 60 times since joining the Premier League in 2011. The 6.9% owned forward has also shown some promising underlying statistics this term, with six goal attempts across 152 minutes of play. But with no Premier League goal since March, I want to see far more from the Belgian before I back his selection – that’s despite last night’s brace against Cyprus.

“Lukaku has been hopelessly difficult to predict in previous campaigns but I don’t think we can necessarily judge him on what we’ve seen in the past. I rate Ronald Koeman highly and I firmly believe that he will realise that Lukaku holds the key to his success at Everton. Koeman will be working to get the best from the striker and I think that warrants re-assessing his potential as a consistent goalscorer. starting with the trip to Sunderland.” – Mark

Another source of possible conflict is Christian Benteke (7.4), who is owned by only 3.7% of FPL managers. Mark is not convinced he will score for his new side Crystal Palace, when he visits Middlesbrough. However, Paul and I are buoyed by a set of underlying statistics indicating goals are on the horizon for the former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker.

In his Villa heyday, in 2012/13 when he scored 19 times, Benteke also topped the headed goal attempts table – meanwhile this season, no team has unleashed more crosses than Palace.

Among our other differential forward picks, Mark has opted for the 10.3% owned Jermain Defoe (7.1), despite home form that saw him score just five of his 15 goals last season at the Stadium of Light.

Paul is hoping Andre Gray (6.5), who is facing the possibility of FA action over social media comments made four years ago, will be available for Burnley’s plum home tie against Hull. Meanwhile, I’m taking a risk that Wilfried Bony (7.3) can shine on loan at Stoke, even though he faces a potentially tricky home tie against Tottenham this weekend. I’ll be loading up his fine record at Swansea, where he scored 26 times in 54 appearances, as ammunition.

Community Champion

Representing the Community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek 4 will be Grand Thibauto, who is in his fourth season with 2015/16’s overall ranking of 274,188 his highest so far.

In Gameweek 3 Jac the Cat became the third champion in a row to be defeated by the Scout Picks. He lost out by 46 points to 48.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2016/17 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

It's the Aguero injury flushing out the wildcards this week that's mostly to blame. The worst week to wildcard for price rises is the week where everyone else is doing it. I think next week we will see more than we expect as the price change sites will have adjusted their targets pessimistically.

It's not just that, though. It's just the catalyst - the Wildcard is often used to kick out the deadwood - I don't think many have burnt the wildcard just a couple of transfers.

A bit risky to WC gw3 to 4 though. New deadline day arrivals can put the players who appear to be first choice at risk. I get it if the teams in tatters and aguero funds can fix it, but then, every WCer seems to be set on getting him back as soon as he returns, like its impossible to even wait a week or 2. Ive not owned him yet and no plans to until after second international break when he returns to 2 home fixtures.

Some will get it right and the GW4 WC will be the best decision they ever made - and some will get it horribly wrong. That's the game.

If the a few of the new players blank and their price falls the WCers may not have enough itb to easily get Kun back ... all the best-laid plans ...

Likewise I don't understand using the WC to get Aguero out, unless the rest of your team is in tatters. Surely it's better to save it when you need to get Aguero back in.

Potentially a good thing - means we may be able to swap out some heavy hitters according to fixtures in FPL, as many Sky players already do. No price changes in Sky makes that easy.

Surely it is better for current WC'ers to have built up value this week and then have an advantage over the pack.

Yes and no. Like house prices, inflation can be a mixed blessing.

I much prefer having the freedom to one week swap out Costa for Kane to Aguero etc. If the price goes up .5 or even 1m over a few weeks then I'm less inclined to do that.

Vale from WC transfer adjustments only pays off if the players you kept continue to perform/increase in value. Basically, if you only really gain a good value advantage if you play your WC perfectly which is very tricky to do this early in the season and after a fresh batch of new signings.

This window is seldom good for rises.

I WC'd week two and my value was 102.4 prior to selling Aguero. A lot of double risers early on, and now most people WCing this week are getting a very similar team - Sanchez (for whom I'd need a hit) being their one addition.

So far in the international break, the following players have increased by £0.1: Hazard, Sterling, Capoue, Costa, Negredo, Ibrahimovic, Colgate, McAuley, Jakupovic, Fer, Sánchez and Cazorla.

Will any of these increase by £0.1 more by the deadline?

Hazard probably, but he’s a keeper anyways. Personally I’m hoping for Sterling and Negredo also, so that I ‘earn’ £0.2 on the wildcard since I’m shipping them out again (might turn out to be silly with Sterling but I’d rather have Sánchez and Hazard).

It was perhaps a bit early to play the wildcard now, but I didn’t have Hazard, any Arsenal nor Everton player and wanted to ship out Forster, Martial, Oscar and Ramirez, so it just had to be. 40 points behind in my leagues already – hope this helps!

There's going to be carnage in GW6. Kun won't rise because he'll be locked but the players people brought in with the Aguero money will plummet as there will be a lot of transfers saved in GW5 and used in GW6. Good time to wildcard for TV.

Some respectable journalists say that he is the odd man out in the new Chelsea defence this season. Azpi to right back, Alonso to left back and Terry, Cahill, Luiz either a three or alternating for the two centre back roles.

With 12 months on his contract there is now little motivation to make Ivanovic a regular.

All depends on wither Alonso is a starter or a mere back-up.

There's not enough depth of defenders in the squad to start playing an extra one, so all the Sky 'experts' who think 5 at the back will become a thing because it's Conte's supposed 'preferred' formation can forget about that one.
Cuardrado being loaned is also a clear indication that this will not happen, as he is a capable wingback having played some time there for Juve.

Therefore it will 100% be 4 at the back. Ivan's position will depend like I said on Alonso. If he plays Ivan may be set for the chop, but Rahman and Felipé Luiz also had big price-tags and did not start, so that's the part we will have to see about.

I do think Ivan has played well though.

True but according to the scouts and people here they might reshuffle. Eriksen, Alli, Lamela under most threat to be benched. Lamela coming back later might affect.

I see only few Spurs defenders in WC drafts despite their strong fixtures. Why is that? For example is Walker a rotation risk?

        Ibra, lukaku, negredo/defoe

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Lukaku

Who is keen to draft him in based on Everton's fixtures? Who is fearful of his poor Premier League goal less run that stretches back to March.

And who has an inbuilt prejudice about the man many call Trollaku?

Very tempted to get him in on WC alongside Ibra and Benteke

Would be very surprised if he doesn't get straight back into the team.

I know we joke about #DembeleTheory but plenty of outside FFS articles have been written about his importance to the team. Assuming Poch realises 🙂

Yeah, I think he's a great player and they've definitely missed him. Others now have their chance to stake a claim though and potentially give Poch a selection dilemma. Also the risk that he might rotate him around CL fixtures potentially - he'll be an important player for them in those games

Andy, I was initially going to do Tadic--> Ozil + Kun --> Lukaku -4.

        But have now decided:
gw4: Kun --> Lukaku (have Townsend so not getting Tekkers)

        Gw5; Gray --> Kane
        Gw6; WC

So similar train of thought. Just can bring myself to take a -4 for Ozil this week.

Lets hope the Kane differential pays off then! 🙂

Although GW6 wildcard will be tough if he goes and scores a brace - Kane, Ibra and Aguero!

Yeah it had crossed my mind that if Ibra, Lukaku, Kane do well these next two GWs + Aguero coming back, it will be one hell of a headache.

But, with WC in hand we will be well placed to chose the best combo.

In that case , ditch Ibra for Kane

One of the benefits of WC-ing for GW6 is that you can take any punt you want for GW5. ManCity and Spurs having the best fix that week so i'm probably going for one of their players (Alli,Eriksen, Kane, Nolito,KdB, Silva...)

Should I bring in Benteke or Lukaku, I already have Barkley too.

I actually went tripple Everton, WC-ing GW6 so my transfers this week was Baines and Lukaku (had Barks already). Big risk, but they have the fixtures and they haven't lost yet so i'm banking on them to do good. Also, MNF with 3 Everton will be sweet.

'tis the week for differential captain picks, with the manc derby ahead. Going for Payet at home to Watford myself, any of you lads choosing someone other than Sanchez/Hazard?

To get Sterling or not to get Sterling on a WC? Alternative is Firmino/Mane.

I'm debating on doing a Payet-Antonio double up instead of Sterling.

        I think I've lost it.

Go for Sterling. City cover is essential considering how attacking they are. Pep's teams are always full of goals, and now with Kun's suspension, Sterling is necessary for these two weeks at least.

Get Sterling and after 2 weeks change him to a Liverpool mid, simple.

Thanks. Not sure I can do that in 2 weeks do, will use all my FT and maybe a hit to get in Aguero at that time.

Diomande. If you're getting such a cheap forward, might as well get the cheapest one you can get

you don't really want to go there, do you?

if you are looking for a cut-rate player like that, look at midfielders.

Yeah I want to go there, I want Snodgrass as my 5th Mid and this allows me to do that and play 3-5-2 whilst Aguero is out.

ok. if you haven't wildcarded yet, then Diomonde, i guess.

don't know your entire situation, team, money, etc. --
but he'll probably be very hard to trade out of when you want to without a hit.
