We’ve now launched our latest captain poll to canvas your opinion on the likely favourites and differential options for the armband in Gameweek 9.

Saturday’s two goals has seen Theo Walcott (7.8) continue to emerge as a viable captaincy alternative to Alexis Sanchez (11.3) in the Arsenal attack.

Following that brace against Swansea, Walcott welcomes a Middlesbrough side to the Emirates with just a single clean sheet to their name. No player has had more shots on target than the England international, who has also scored five times in the league and is currently the most popular transfer target ahead of Gameweek 9.

Sanchez, who is in 23.7% of FPL teams, has been no slouch either this season with four goals and three assists. The Chilean, who clinched the top spot in the Captain Poll last time out, is expected to once again feature amongst the top candidates for the armband in Gameweek 9. Team-mate Mesut Ozil (9.5) also offered a reminder of his armband potential with a goal against Swansea on Saturday.

Manchester City serve up a variety of choices this week, but with a resolute Southampton side visiting the Etihad, leading captaincy contenders Sergio Aguero (13.1) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.6) may have to toil for points.

City could also be weary after their Champions League exertions against Barcelona and up against a Saints outfit who may well shuffle the pack for their own European tie on Thursday to preserve some legs.

Claude Puel’s side have two clean sheets on the road already, and Aguero’s stock as a captain took a major dent in Gameweek 8 when he finished with negative points after emerging from the bench to miss a penalty.

De Bruyne also fluffed his lines from the spot on Saturday, although with eight goal attempts against Everton, he was City’s most vibrant threat on goal. Following an injury lay off the Belgian differential is only owned by 8.7% of FPL managers, compared to Aguero’s 44.8%.

With West Brom visiting, Liverpool’s midfielders continue to offer strong alternatives.

But, as ever, deciding which of Sadio Mane (9.0), Roberto Firmino (8.5) or Philippe Coutinho (8.3) will rack up the highest points tally may prove too difficult.

West Ham’s home encounter with a Sunderland side without an away clean sheet, presents Dimitri Payet (9.4) as a key captaincy contender. The Black Cats are winless and have shipped 15 goals in their eight Premier League outings – they will surely be stretched to contain Payet’s influence.

For those who favour form over fixture, the Premier League’s Golden Boot leader Diego Costa looks an enticing option for Chelsea’s home clash with Man United.

The Blues striker has seven goals this term and, with maximum FPL bonus points from just one goal over the weekend, looks to have upped his all-round game. It is little wonder Costa has already earned a price hike this week to 10.2 and seen his ownership soar to 32.4%.

Romelu Lukaku’s (9.4) strike at the Etihad took his tally to six goals in five outings, yet he travels to a Burnley side that have yet to ship more than a single goal in any of their five matches at Turf Moor.

Leicester City’s plum home clash with Palace’s porous defence looks promising, yet Claudio Ranieri seems to have stepped up his penchant for rotation and is likely to deter most.

Islam Slimani has netted twice in two top-flight appearances at the King Power Stadium and could be a real differential with under 2% ownership.

With 13 goals conceded in their last three fixtures, Hull City have swiftly switched from surprise package to whipping boys over the first nine Gameweeks.

This could make Stoke’s 1.3% owned midfielder Marko Arnautovic (7.2), who had four goal attempts against Sunderland at the weekend, an intriguing captaincy candidate when he visits the KC Stadium on Saturday.

Joe Allen – second only to Walcott as a current transfer target – could even tempt some as an option having returned four goals in his last four Premier League outings.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

      2 - 0

Man Utd have nothing and Liverpool will swarm all over them.

Fellaini will play and it'll be a humping.

I'm not against Felli playing as long as it's in a midfield three, with maybe Carrick in there too. Him and Pogba in a two will be overrun.

          He is awful. Truly awful.

Slow, predictable, technically poor and positionally poor.

If he plays, United will be battered.

            Hope he plays.

Though to be fair, long balls and crosses to him and Ibra would make me scared as a Liverpool fan..

He's awful as a holding midfielder. Genuinely think he could do a job alongside two other midfielders, though that's not to say he's in my preferred XI for the game. Just saying, if he's picked I hope it's not as a holding midfielder with Pogba as the other, which we've seen doesn't work.

If he plays anywhere near midfield, United will struggle. Appalling player.

He is only any use as a number 10 in a side who get the ball forward quickly and play off him. Not a United player and he has been their main problem this year, not Rooney.

Watch the Watford game and just watch Fellaini.

              Terrible player.

Despite lack of clean sheets, anyone tempted by a Liv defender? Their next 6 fixtures are the best IMO. I've also got Stones (I know, I know...) and think City's fixture list is second only to Liverpool's, so could be some mini-league-beating clean sheets by getting ahead of the pack...

Yep, Lovren is coming into my team I think for 4.9, replacing Collins.

Maybe next week though, need to downgrade Capoue to make cash and I dont think worth -4..

Yeah i think they'll come good. And a pool defender is definitely appealing with their fixtures. But wouldn't do it over a priority transfer in attack. If you have 2 FT's or no real other issues in attack, then it looks like a decent luxury transfer

Tbf he's playing as a Wing back in a 3-4-2-1 formation, so not great, but not quite RB. He got forward at times and had a few chances

RWB that is, he actually got some good goals from that position last year if I'm not mistaken. Sunderland has shipped 15 goals, so give hime one more week, especially if it involves a -4

Morning thought: It's time to scrap the clean sheet point for midfielders. Modern football means defending from the front - no way should Hazard or Walcott be rewarded more for a defensive performance than Vardy harrying people up front, Ibra dominating defensive corners, or Deeney muscling people around.

    1. Demí
      • 15 Years

Scrapping it better than giving forwards clean sheet points too?

That'd be fine as well. I think it'd make for a bit more balance and less big swings in mid vs. forward captaincy scores (the old Haz v Costa conundrum).

    2. Pasqualinho
      • 16 Years
      9 years, 3 months ago

I'd say not, because we have a variety of midfielders, some of whom are more defensive than others, who should be rewarded. The alternatives of splitting the categories up into attacking & defensive midfielders makes the game more complex, which would (I feel) be a mistake.

I would rather accept that some players are good for FPL and some aren't, and remove this tame attempt to balance it, than complicate things further.

    3. Alnair
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 3 months ago

Needs to be completely re-thought tbh. Midfielders should get direct points for Distance Run, Passing Accuracy, Interceptions, Clearances etc in order to balance out the attacking mids with the defensive ones. Kante should've been one of the highest scoring mids in the game last season if the points were assigned fairly.

As long as they no form in the league I find no reason to accommodate their guys in my team. So many better options competing for the same places than Leicester guys who possibly could be viable FPL choices.

Allen is better than Capoue. Stanislas is better than Snodgrass and not because of this game week. They've both been on my radar

Interesting. I think there should be a shift in the cheap midfielders for sure. I want to see one more week before i decide that though...

    Valencia & Evans > Holebas & Pieters (-4)

I know the mantra, don't take hits for defenders, but this would really sort out my defence for the coming weeks.

Why don't you just do one at a time?

I feel something will inevitably crop up next week to prevent me from doing it. Looking at getting rid of Antonio/Costa could get suspended etc

By this theory Holebas can also get suspended. I agree, just one.

It depends on your other three defenders I guess. Are you likely to play 2 of your other three?

I'd play Baines, bench Smith, and possibly play Amat without any real confidence.

Of those two, this week Capoue out. Both Rash and Austin have bad fixtures this week.

    Capoo + Antonio ---> Allen + Sterling

Is these transfer worth for -8 hits? Or keep both this for this week?

i would get rid of antonio, but maybe not for sterling. arnautovic, son, walcott are better candidates if you dont already own

    Morning all.

Not too bad a week - score of 51 with Firmino to play tonight. Overall rank sitting at around 180k which I suppose is very average on this forum.

My gut feeling is to get rid of Stones this week. On paper at £5m he looks a snipe for a top four defender - however a return of 12 points all season isn't good enough!

    What are your thoughts?

    My current team is;

    Pickford/Foster

    Stones/Williams/Holebas/Bertrand/Smith

    Capoue/Sanchez/Sterling/Firmino/Snoddy

    Aguero/Lukaku/Wilson

many decent crosses, and wasnt shy to shoot. his shooting isnt very good, but one could go in if he keeps shooting

but keep in mind that man utd isnt gonna allow half as many chances as leicester
