Chelsea’s midfielders “do a Liverpool” and rack up big hauls in an emphatic home win over Manchester United. Sergio Aguero returns to the Manchester City starting line-up but draws yet another blank, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic again falls short as United are humbled at the Bridge. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s matches…

On the Rise

Eden Hazard
While Diego Costa surprisingly failed to play a part in any of Chelsea four goals, Hazard notched for the second successive Gameweek to continue his recent renaissance.

The Blues’ recent change in shape has been key to the Belgian’s improvement – only Arsenal’s Theo Walcott has managed more shots in the box from midfield since Antonio Conte ditched his four-man defensive set-up.

At a time where rotation has recently hit hard following European matches, the fact that Chelsea are focused purely on domestic matters may yet persuade some to reconsider a resurgent Hazard.

Costa, meanwhile, also managed to avoid a booking today, leaving him on four yellows ahead of Wednesday’s EFL Cup clash with West Ham United. If he’s cautioned in that one, he’ll miss next weekend’s Gameweek 10 trip to Southampton.

Nemanja Matic
The Chelsea stopper has been transformed under Conte this season and continues to offer a steady source of creativity from the centre of the park.

Matic managed just three assists last season, but he’s already up to five this time around after teeing up Hazard for the Blues’ third. That’s the same number as Dimitri Payet and second only to Kevin De Bruyne’s six.

All five assists have arrived in the last seven Gameweeks as the Serb steadily improves in the 3-4-3 formation. Priced at 5.0, Matic has suddenly become an unlikely option for the fifth midfielder slot.

The Chelsea Defence
Conte’s men made it three wins and a trio of clean sheets since moving to a 3-4-3 formation.

Gary Cahill and Marcos Alonso highlighted their points potential with goal and assist respectively, earning both players bonus in the Red Devils’ thrashing.

Alonso has been the standout performer since Conte’s tactical switch and looks the man to monitor. He sits first for attempts on goal amongst defenders from Gameweek 7 onwards and is ranked second for key passes thanks to his role as a raiding left wing-back.

Nathan Redmond
Redmond’s underlying numbers have already been impressive over the season due to his role up top for Southampton.

One goal in the first seven shows he’d been failing to tuck away his chances but Sunday’s Etihad strike, added to last week’s goal against Burnley, suggests that Redmond’s form and confidence is on the ascent.

Having dropped to just 5.9 in the FPL, he is clearly a tempting prospect. However, the Saints’ schedule is testing, with Chelsea and Liverpool looming in the next three.

Also, the introduction of new boy Sofiane Boufal also adds to Claude Puel’s options in attack. The intentions for the club-record signing are not yet clear but we can presume a starting role beckons. It remains to be seen how this shakes up the Saints’ teamsheet.

In Decline

Sergio Aguero
The striker returned to the starting XI after a couple of appearances off the bench, but there’s no doubt that Aguero was nowhere near his best against the Saints, with all three of his attempts off target.

The Argentine remains the most popular player in FPL – sitting in 44% of squads; he was also the top pick for this weekend’s captaincy.

But Sunday’s blank means that Aguero has now failed to score in four of his last five league appearances. With the goals suddenly drying up for City (they’ve scored twice in four in all competitions), Fantasy faith in the Etihad side is on the wane and Aguero and Raheem Sterling are taking the hit.

Aguero’s ownership fell ahead of Gameweek 9 and is already dropping following Sunday’s 1-point return.

Kevin De Bruyne
Replaced at half-time with a knock, the Belgian’s owners will take solace in the fact that Pep Guardiola has confirmed the problem is not serious. Given the recent uncertainty surrounding Aguero’s pitch time, some Fantasy managers have been considering De Bruyne as their go-to City attacker ahead of some kind upcoming fixtures. Confirmation that his withdrawal was not tactical will at least go some way to softening a disappointing one-point return.

John Stones
City’s run of dire defensive displays continued, with their big-money signing from Everton gifting Redmond the opener.

Guardiola’s side have kept one clean sheet this season, which, coincidentally, was the only league fixture that Stones has failed to start.

With Vincent Kompany now back in the fold, the 24%-owned defender now looks under threat – today’s benching of Nicolas Otamendi shows we cannot take anything for granted with Guardiola’s teamsheets.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
The United veteran endured yet another disappointing day and has now scored just a single goal in his last seven league outings.

A home encounter with Burnley in Gameweek 10 may well be enough for many to hand him one last hurrah before reassessing their options.

The Clarets have conceded an average of three goals per road trip and, with 39% ownership, a big haul could still do damage to non-owners.

Many have already had enough, though – Ibrahimovic has already been subject to more transfers out than any forward ahead of Gameweek 10, having already lost 900,000 owners since Gameweek 5.

Cabaye with shockingly good numbers this week when playing in the hole due to Puncheon's absence.

I don't know why Pardew bothered buying Townsend...he should have just bought a quality and proper CDM and pushed Cabaye forward.

        Actually...yeah he did.

If I was Palace manager then I'd do anything and everything to ensure Cabaye was the No10. He's wasted where he plays.

      First week I've saved a FT in over a year and I've ended up with a 3 million+ gw rank. Would have only done Stones to Morgan or maybe Fuchs anyway so wouldn't have made much difference. It's made me want to come out aggressive though, already used my 2 FT's here;
      M.Wilson & Sterling > Pieters & Coutinho

      ------------------Foster-------------------
      ---------Clyne Holebas Pieters-------
      Sanchez Firmino Coutinho Walcott
      -------Aguero Lukaku Deeney--------
      ---------------------------------------------------
      Pickford Capoue Stones Amat. 0.1itb

Not afraid of a hit, but can't see anything worth changing even if I had a FT, can you?

Because Allen better prospect even as bench player, Capoue price likely to go down and Allen up and still has 2 free transfers next week.

Probably Clyne he has to get attacking returns at some stage been a bit unlucky. After this week LEI fixtures really good too.

Lallana really is the 4 the or even 5th pool choice right? But Antonio to Lallana only real way to get rid of Antonio without a hit and double up pool - already have Firmino.
Will Lallana do or take a hit for Mane or Cout?

                    Options:
                    a) Fer who looks like he's been dropped > 7.0m? Milner?
                    b) Sterling > Coutinho and if Fer doesn't play this week have Capoue vs Hull off the bench...

Just jumped on the Sterling to Coutinho bandwagon with my 1 FT.

Be a bit of a nervous mid week with the League Cup games but I wasn't willing to suck up the price changes.

It was a real close 51/49 vote by the voices in my head though!

Currently debating doing the same. Sterling is still a good pick, but seems like everyone will have Coutinho now. Don't want to lose ground because of him

I just can't do early transfers this time. EFL Cup is in two days, we don't know if our picks will play and some unexpected injuries could cause many troubles to our teams. I'd be pretty mad at myself for using 2 free transfers so soon just to catch some price rises. I don't think it's worth it but good luck to those who already used them!

I'm yet to have an early transfer bite me in the bum yet.
Got a healthy TV which will stand me in good stead later down the line.
                      Happy to take the risk.
I'd definitely do one if I had 2FTs

My TV is quite good too and 0.7m in the bank so I'll be fine. The issue is I can't get Coutinho/Firmino without using the other transfer.

Yeah I've been lucky with all my early ones this season.

I never did them in previous seasons as always was a complete casual and just looked at line-ups in papers on Saturday morning and used whatever transfers I fancied including hits.

I could never work out why my team value was so low!

Having said that it will only take a couple of early ones biting me to make me more cautious, hope this week won't be the first!

I only did it once this season to get Antonio and Lukaku in for a hit. It paid off big time. May I ask who did you add to your team? 🙂

I've just added coutinho for sterling.

By saying I've not been bitten by doing any early ones in previous GWs I mean they've not been hit by any midweek injuries or suspensions.

It's going to happen sooner or later though if I keep wanting the TV increases

Not to be different I still think Firmino is a better option even if Couts finishing has improved this season. If budget was not an issue Mane and Firmino would be the 2 I would have.

Pool not in europe so will field 8/9 or so of 11. Spurs more likely 5 or 6 in my opinion.

Just realized that even if I copy my ML leader and get Couts, I still feel I have a much better set of attacking differentials then him.

                        Him: Ozil, Antonio, Capoue, Rashford
                        Me: Sanchez, Walcott, Allen, Kun

                        Thoughts on
Son and Snodgrass -> Coutinho and less than 5.2 midfielder for a hit???

                        Grant Pickford
                        Walker Williams Holebas Evans Amat
                        Sanchez Firmino Son Allen Snodgrass
                        Lukaku Aguero Costa

                        I'm considering defoe -> iheanacho

Good idea or just too risky?

Bonkers. He will only start if Aguero gets dropped for him, can't see that happening

And we have seen that it is possible to drop Kun without playing Nacho.

                            He's a great player...

I think aguero isn't a pep kind of player...got the feeling his time is ending at man c.

Pep not exactly known for playing two up front. Too risky. Whatever is going on I still don't see Kun being dropped.

Any help would be greatly appreciated- would you wild card this team? Or do Antonio/Shaw to Coutinho/Holebas? (Would have to tonight due to price rise)

                        Foster/Jaku
                        Baines/Shaw/Stones/Amat/McCauley
                        Sanchez/Firmino/Antonio/Allen/Capoue
                        Aguero/Lukaku//Defoe

Bailly injury looks bad, shaw may come in with blind moving to CB. Though rojo too so may worth still getting rid

Had enough of stones now! Probably about 5GWs too late.

                          Yes.

Stones been ruined by Pep, & Martinez previously.

Wouldn't have been allowed to be messing about like that at Barnsley! Could have been a world beater if he had stayed 🙂
