Man City inspire, Arsenal perspire and the Ilkay Gundogan (5.6) bandwagon goes into overdrive on a night of high entertainment in the Champions League.

Manchester City 3 Barcelona 1

If attack is the best form of defence, then this was one of the finest rearguard actions of the season.

A high tempo, relentlessly open encounter went the way of City thanks to their relentless industry and threat from midfield, with a brace from Gundogan and superb Kevin De Bruyne (10.7) free-kick earning the home side a deserved three points.

Gundogan’s fourth goal in as many days has added 0.1 to his price and close to 200,000 new Fantasy Premier League new owners.

The German could earn starts against Middlesbrough at home and then Crystal Palace and Burnley away either side of the international break. That should see his 6.1% ownership rise further, providing he makes the first XI against ‘Boro.

De Bruyne has played just 68 minutes of the last two domestic matches following injury but was back to his dynamic best against Barca, while Raheem Sterling (8.3) provided an assist in a lively display.

David Silva (8.7) and Sergio Aguero (13.1), who was brought back into the Euro fold after a benching in Barcelona, also recorded assists.

City coach Pep Guardiola made three changes from the side that swept past West Brom at the weekend, with Willy Caballero (4.9) replacing the suspended Claudio Bravo (5.5) in goal, Pablo Zabaleta (4.7) returning at right back after injury and De Bruyne in for Nolito (8.7).

Zabaleta added experience to a defence in which Aleksandar Kolarov (5.8) was outstanding, while Fernandinho’s (5.4) discipline freed up Gundogan to drift forward to devastating effect. The Brazilian later limped off with a knock and is now a doubt for the Middlesbrough match on Saturday.

Saturday’s team-sheet is now the main concern for Fantasy managers.

Given that there is a break to follow, Guardiola is likely to prioritise fielding a full-strength side, although he does have a wealth of options to mix things up – one or two changes do look likely.

Nolito, Jesus Navas and Leroy Sane are all options in the attacking positions that will threaten the likes of Sterling and Gundogan.

Sterling was preserved with 20 minutes remaining, indicating that he would seem in line to start once again. Despite his form, Gundogan’s starting role is less assured, with Nolito perhaps introduced on the flank, shifting De Bruyne back to a central role.

Man City XI: Caballero, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Stones, Kolarov, Fernandinho (Fernando 60), Sterling (Navas 71), De Bruyne (Nolito 89), Gundogan, Silva, Aguero.
Subs not used: Gunn, Kompany, Clichy, Iheanacho.

Ludogorets Razgrad 2 Arsenal 3

Arsenal booked their place in the last 16, but had to go the long way round to do it.

Goals from Granit Xhaka (5.2), Olivier Giroud (8.8) – his third in two matches – and Mesut Ozil’s (9.6) fine individual effort wiped out a two-goal deficit to give the Gunners a fighting chance of actually winning their Champions League group for a change.

Ozil, Aaron Ramsey (7.6) and Mohamed Elneny (4.6) provided the assists.

Boss Arsene Wenger was again without the injured trio of Theo Walcott (8.0), Santi Cazorla (7.2) and Nacho Monreal (6.0) and chose not to risk Hector Bellerin (6.6), who picked up a knock in the weekend win at Sunderland.

Xhaka, Giroud, Ramsey and Carl Jenkinson (5.0) came in, with David Ospina (4.8) retaining his Euro place in goal.

The form of the returning Giroud is of particular concern to the 25.3% who own Alexis Sanchez (11.4).

The Chilean went back to the left flank to accommodate the striker, and with Spurs at home and then Man United away up next for the Gunners, the attacking threat of the six-goal Sanchez suddenly looks compromised.

Ramsey’s first start since Gameweek 1 also thickens the plot, with competition in midfield a boost for Wenger but an added complication for FPL managers with Walcott and Cazorla in their squads.

Wenger stated post-match against Sunderland that Giroud’s future as a starter could be limited to a 4-4-2 set-up, alongside Sanchez. Last night’s tactical shift immediately compromised that statement and illustrated the options available to the Gunners boss.

Nonetheless, we should expect Sanchez to lead the attack again on Sunday, with Walcott likely to return having been pictured back in training just 48 hours ago.

Ramsey is now clearly a factor, although he much prefers a central role and cannot match the in-form Walcott’s thrust and goal threat. Wenger has talked up Walcott in tandem with Sanchez the striker as a “good working unit” and, for now, that surely remains his first choice option.

There’s little doubt that the pair will have to maintain their output to hold those current roles, however. Perhaps no bad thing for owners of Sanchez and Walcott.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Jenkinson, Mustafi, Koscielny, Gibbs, Coquelin, Xhaka (Elneny 87), Ramsey (Oxlade-Chamberlain 75), Özil, Sánchez (Iwobi 90), Giroud.
Subs not used: Cech, Gabriel, Holding, Maitland-Niles.

I was there last night, unbelievable atmosphere, and one of the best nights I've experienced as a City fan. After the long trip to Barcelona a couple of weeks back, I needed that.

    What a game!

Very jealous. Couldn't even see the match here in Poland 🙁

Congratulations, about time an English club put the upstarts in their place.

Would be a bit of a bummer if Gundo was benched at the weekend.

I think we may see a couple of players rested, it was such a draining performance last night that I reckon there will be a few tired legs. Namely, Serge, KDB and Gundo.

    Hi All
I'm doing pretty well (4k overall and only 80 points off top spot) but team a little troubled this week:

    Cech (pickford)
    Daniels, Clyne, Holebas (williams, amat)
    mane, couthinho, sanchez, allen (bolasie)
    deeney, aguero, defoe.

I can't decide if I would be silly to do a hit. i've been toying with the following options:

    a) Bolasie > Gundogan
    b) Bolasie and Defoe/Deeney to Gundogan and Austin
    c) Deeney / Defoe to Austin
    d) something else!?

    Please help!!

Been out of the loop recently. The rank has suffered as a result. 🙁

    Team atm -

    Pickford - Jakupovic
    Koscielny - Vertonghen - Matip - Holebas - Amat
    Sanchez - Payet - Firmino - Arnautovic - Carrick
    Aguero - Defoe - Deeney

    2 FTs and 0.1m itb

Thinking Denney + Arnautovic +Koscielny :arrrow: Austin + Hazard + Lowton for -4. Will get KDB next gw for Payet.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

On last night's Scoutcast Eden Hazard topped the bill (closely followed by Gundogan obvs 😉 )

But how do you include him in your squad that is likely to also include the likes of Lukaku, Aguero, Costa and Sanchez.

Are you planning to get Hazard in? If so what sacrifice will you make?

Or do you think it is better to wait until Chelsea's fixtures improve in Gameweek 15?

Also, do you own Hazard already? If so how did you squeeze him in. Would be great to see some Hazarded FPL squads to see how you managed it and give inspiration to others.

      Hi Jonty,

I've transferred Hazard in on Sunday for Walcott.

      Lloriss, Pickford
      Fuchs, Koscielny, Holebas, Pieters, Amat
      Coutinho, Firmino, Hazard, Gundogan, Allen
      Kun, Costa, Diomande

As you all can figure, I'm playing 352, with those 3 low price DF battling for third spot.

Yesterday, I've got Gundogan. Just for fun and money (for Son).

So I've doubled City, Chelsea and Liverpool.

      Hi Jonty,

I don't think you need Costa AND Haz. But Haz is more important imo. He's cheaper for a start!

I've singled out Mane as the player to make way for Haz.
In my current heavy hitting mid trio of... Alexis, Mane & Coutinho (with Gundogan & Allen rotating 4th/5th).

Only thing is, I DON'T have Lukaku *ouch*

Sold Sanchez for Hazard on Sunday night, upgrading Snodgrass to Firmino at the same time (-4)

Gives me a front 8 of:

      Hazard Firmino Coutinho Walcott Allen
      Aguero Lukaku Austin.

If Wally is out mid-term will downgrade to Gundogan next week probably.

Aguero, Lukaku, Sanchez and Hazard look impossible to squeeze in without going for a 4th mid cheapie and a crap defense. Arsenal, Chelsea, So'ton and Spurs have great fixtures coming up, can't see a cheap defense being the way to go so it'll come down to Sanchez vs Lukaku vs Hazard imo.

Brought in Hazard and Austin this week for Walcott and Benteke. Helps a huge amount that I don't have Aguero though, allows me to have Sanchez, Hazard, Firmino, Mane, Costa, Austin & Lukaku as my playing front 7.

Had 2FT. Swapped Walcott & Deeney to Hazard and Austin. Hado to downgrade Allen to 4.3 midfielder. I believe 3-4-3 with Austin is better than 3-5-2 with Allen even with the £1 gain of 3-5-2.

Front 8 are: Sanchez, Hazard, Coutinho, Mane, 4.3 mid, Aguero, Lukaku & Austin.

        Very cheap defence though :/

If I get Hazard it will mean that I have to downgrade Valencia to a 4.8 max defender instead of getting Fuchs.

Already did Defoe -> Austin because he was going to rise, and can't make up my mind about Valencia -> Fuchs (keep Sterling) or Valencia -> Gibson (or Holebas or Smith) and get Hazard. Would also mean -4.

        Current team is
        Heaton Foster
        Valencia Evans Koscielny Pieters Koné
        Sanchez Sterling Firmino Capoue Allen
        Aguero Lukaku Austin

        Thoughts?

        My current starting attackers are:

Coutinho - Chadli - De Bruyne - Walcott
        Costa - Aguero - Barrow

So to get Hazard I would either do a straight swap for De Bruyne, or get rid of either Costa or Aguero and go 3-5-2. In fact, before Aguero hit form last weekend I was planning to do the latter this week!

I'm waiting. Had him for his early good form. Half expecting another dip. If not, I'll assess when his fixtures pick up. I'm happy with my midfield and I think it hurts more when you make bad transfers than when you miss good ones.

        Mustafi, Clyne, Holebas, Francis, Amat
        Sanchez, Hazard, Coutinho, Firmino, Leko
        Kun, Austin, Wilson

0.5 ITB. Suffer from low TV, even if I were to cut out my defenders I couldn't fit in lukaku. Ideally Walcott keeps dropping over the next 2 weeks and I can get rid of Wilson for a 4.4 and get Wally back in for Leko and play 3-5-2.

I sold Hazard for Theo right before his first of three goals lol. I'm not sure Hazard scores enough to warrant the price difference over the 8-8.5 mids. Similarly I just sold Benteke for exactly the same reason...

With the cash saved spread the saving into Coutinho and Kosc it's not all bad. I'm giving Ibra one more week and monitoring Theo then a Chelsea player will be coming in either Costa or Hazard with a cheaper striker. See how things pan out. Costa is easier as I maintain Arsenal cover too.

Finding it hard to break up Costa, Lukaku & aguero up top at min.

Firmino, Sanchez, lallana, gundogan n Allen midfield so would need to oust a striker n upgrade a mid to get him.

Think I'll have to hold fire for now, maybe if Costa gets suspension but hard to oust him at min, only couple of blanks all season.

Downgrading Benteke to Austin, downgrading Williams to Brunt, and then Walcott to Hazard and Capoue to Chadli, that's one of the possibilities for me.

Already did Ozil to Coutinho this week, and going with C&F double up. That gives me Aguero, Costa, Austin, C&F, Hazard, Allen and Chadli. Backline may not be that good: Brunt, Mustafi, Pieters, Holebas, Amat.

      Firmino/Redmond/Sanchez/Stanislas/Capoue

      Kaku/Defoe/Kun

      1FT and 0,3 ITB

Would you go Kaku to Austin to open up some free funds and spend on midfield ? Doesn't seem good fixtures for Kaku. Or maybe Defoe to Austin ? Defore has better fixtures tho (two easy ones followed up by teams who can't quite hold a clean sheet)

I'm planning to dump Lukaku this week myself, despite the nice returns. Fixtures are pretty bad for quite a long stretch, and it's a lot of extra money for someone I'm not going to be captaining. The extra cash will allow me to look at Lallana to Hazard and other options.
