Spurs are woeful and Leicester resolute on a night of diminished Champions League returns for the English sides. Here’s how the rather insignificant amount of action played out.

Tottenham Hotspur 0 Bayer Leverkusen 1

Spurs slipped to third in their group after another nervy and unconvincing attempt to make Wembley their Champions League home.

Eric Dier (5.2) hit the bar from a free-kick and Dele Alli (8.2) might have had a penalty, but Mauricio Pochettino’s men were otherwise outplayed, hurried when in possession and stretched when without, as the visitors out-shot them by 11 attempts to nine.

More worryingly, they are now winless in six matches in all competitions and have scored just twice in their last five – and both of those were from penalties.

With Erik Lamela (6.7) missing out due to a hip problem, Pochettino recalled midfielder Moussa Sissoko (6.7), who is still banned domestically. Striker Vincent Janssen (7.7) dropped to the bench and full back Danny Rose (5.9) was rested, presumably with Sunday’s North London derby in mind – Ben Davies (4.8) took his place.

Janssen was soon involved, however, as Mousa Dembele (5.4) went off with a knock, which meant a return to midfield for Heung-Min Son (7.5). The South Korean, who has failed to score in his last four league starts, was a peripheral figure throughout. Close to 90,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have now cut their losses on him this week alone.

With their injury list slowly growing, Spurs’ squad is starting to look rather thin. They have sorely missed the goals of Harry Kane (10.7) is recent weeks and the England man’s possible return from an ankle injury for the weekend’s match at Arsenal cannot come soon enough.

However, with Pochettino confirming a twisted ankle for Dembele, he’ll be a major doubt for Sunday’s clash – we all know by now the impact that his absence can have on Spurs and, in particular, Kane’s scoring rate.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris, Walker, Dier, Vertonghen, Davies, Wanyama, Dembélé (Janssen 30), Sissoko, Alli, Eriksen (Winks 66), Son (Nkoudou 73).
Subs not used: Vorm, Rose, Nkoudou, Onomah, Carter-Vickers.

FC Copenhagen 0 Leicester City 0

Sometimes the stats say it all: two teams; 29 attempts between them; only three on target. Result? Goalless draw.

But that was an outcome which suited Leicester just fine, with the Foxes needing just one more point from two matches to secure a place in the Round of 16.

Coach Claudio Ranieri made three changes from the side who scrapped to a draw away at Tottenham, with Luis Hernandez (4.3) in for Danny Simpson (4.9), Daniel Amartey (4.5) replacing Andy King (4.8) and Jeffrey Schlupp (4.9) coming in for Shinji Okazaki (5.7).

Islam Slimani (8.4), still struggling with a groin injury, didn’t even travel, which meant another start for the in-form Ahmed Musa (7.0).

The Foxes became the first side to keep a clean sheet in their first four Champions League matches, and it was no surprise that Ranieri reserved much of his praise for Kasper Schmeichel (5.0), who produced a fine late save to secure the draw.

City are now starting to replicate their Euro form in the Premier League. A good run of forthcoming fixtures – West Brom and Middlesbrough at home and trips to Watford and Sunderland – could prompt investment in the champions, particularly at the back.

Ranieri would seem unlikely to be concerned with resting players for Sunday’s meeting with West Brom given that an international break now looms.

However, the likes of Marc Albrighton (5.1) and Okazaki will be pushing for recalls, while Simpson would seem likely to slot in at right-back. Hernandez, Schlupp and perhaps Musa look the most likely to come under threat.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Hernández, Huth, Morgan, Fuchs, Mahrez, Amartey, Drinkwater, Schlupp (Okazaki 71), Vardy, Musa.
Subs not used: Zieler, King, Albrighton, Simpson, Okazaki, Gray, Ulloa.

He isn't fit and Arsene has a wealth of options to use instead of Walcott. Combine this with there being plenty of other in form mids, and I think selling is the best option. Although in my case it's for a hit which I dont want to do, but may have to

Do we take a hit to get Wally out? From the looks of it, its 50/50 on him playing. With Ox in decent form, I can see him being benched. Dont really know what to do, other than wait for it and hope for some news after the alleged fitness test today. Whats everyone doing with this problem?

No hit for me - I would guess (and it is a guess) that it's more than 50/50 in Walcott's favour. But it isn't 100%.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Talk of going 3-5-2 has picked up markedly this week. With so many premium midfielders performing it looks to make sense.

If I had a wildcard now I'd certainly consider it....but as surgery is needed to achieve a credible 3-5-2 it looks unlikely for me.

Who is already seeing success from a 3-5-2 and if so what is your front 8?

Who is considering it? Wildcarding over the int. break to achieve it? How else are you looking to get a playable midfield five?

And who is the third cheap striker to achieve this? Pickings look slim.

if you can handle no kun then my front 8 is

      sanchez hazard kdn mane gundogan
      lukaku benteke
Had Diomande all season, the best AOA antidote out there

I think I have the flexibility to do either

      I've currently got:

      Sanchez / Firmino / Coutinho / Redmond / Allen

      Aguero / Lukaku / Austin

Will probably rotate Allen with whichever Southampton attacker tickles my pickle that week

My Front 8 this week with AOA:

      Sanchez - Firmino - Coutinho - Siggy - Redmond
      Aguero - Austin - Wilson

I'm soon going to downgrade Wilson to a 4.5m to squeeze Hazard in from GW15 for Firmino most probably. My 5th mid is going to change according to fixtures going to get Chadli soon. I think 3-5-2 is certainly going to work in the next few weeks atleast.

    4. Polo

      Sanchez mane firmino Allen gundogun

      Aguero lukaku Diomande

I've spent a lot at the back so I've got the option of 442 too

    5. bojack

I'm considering selling Benteke for the cheapest possible starter (Keane?). That would free up 3.0m to make Whelan into a 7.4. Can do that in two transfers which I have over the break.

    6. Hurricane Gilbert
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

Yes there are an overload of mid options, but that also means that picking the right 4th and 5th mid becomes difficult.

Whereas Austin is by far the best third striker, almost guaranteed returns in the long term when fixs improve.

It's 3-4-3 for me unless Austin doesn't get injured.

    7. Ruffio
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

I'm steering clear don't have wildcard anyway but prefer solidity of Kaku/Costa over cheaper 4th 5th mids.
Fear more false dawns a la capoue.
And can't see any bargain 3rd strikers
If there were a Kane from 2 seasons back or vardy from last year...different story

Been playing 3-5-2 since my gw4 wildcard and managed some success I suppose, I really prefer the midfield options this year, especially with many of them playing upfront anyways.

      Front 8:
      Sanchez KDB Coutinho Firmino Allen
      Aguero Austin

Looking at the teams at the top of the overall league most are playing with 3-5-2.

But Costa, Aguero, and Lukaku are all performing consistently well, so I don't really want to lose any of them.

It is not about the formation. It is all about the players you have.. example- if you have had hazard instead of costa in a 3-5-2 formation you would have got more point than..3-4-3 with costa in the last 2 weeks.

If I sell Ibra for a cheapie, I can go 3-5-2 bringing Hazard back in for Fletcher. Will also need to do Foster>4.0 so an 8 point hit next week... Think it's just easier to get Costa and stay 3-4-3..

      Heaton (Foster)
      Kosc Stones Williams (Evans Amat)
      Firmino Coutinho Walcott Gundog (Fletcher)
      Ibra Aguero Austin

Unless this season is vastly different than the last several (haven't looked back further than 2010), I would say 3-4-3 is still the better option.

3-5-2 might be better for a while, but I feel it might be already too late for that.

The reason I think so is that the last several seasons the top 10 goalscorers have always been mostly forwards (usually 8 forwards and 2 midfielders) . So midfielders can bring some quick returns in batches if you pick the right ones at the right time. But when it comes to season-long consistency, forwards are the ones to look for.

Of course if a midfielder is fielded as a false nine, he should be considered a forward, so this argument does not apply to him. Nevertheless, there are not that many such examples. With Giroud returning to form we don't know how Sanchez will be affected yet.

In conclusion, I would still stick to a 3-4-3 with Austin as my cheap forward option.

In two weeks I will have, with some cash to change Bolasie the week after, no hits needed.

      Sanchez, Hazard, Coutinho, Siggy, Bolasie
      Aguero, Austin

But I'm stronger at the back than most: Fuchs, Fonte, Vertonghen (McAuley)

Might also get Firmino instead of Siggy and downgrade Bolasie or Fuchs.

Been on 3-5-2 since wildcarding in GW4. Gone from 250k to 6k in that time so it's working so far. The main benefit imo of 3-5-2 is that your 8th attacker is markedly cheaper, meaning you can afford a beefier defence. Allen instead of Austin means Bellerin instead of Evans. If a 6.0-7.0 striker starts over-performing, though, I'm happy to downgrade a defender and switch back.

As for the best cheap striker I've gone Ashley Barnes at 4.4. Finally back from injury and in a small squad.

      Sanchez Sterling Firmino Coutinho Allen
      Aguero Lukaku Barnes

I would be very interested in a 3-5-2, but I need surgery to do so. So for the time being I'm sticking with 3-4-3.

I've held Mo Barrow all season, thought he looked really useful at the end of last season. Was hoping I could play him more in a 3-4-3 but he hasn't done enough for that. At the same time none of the mid priced strikers are presenting a compelling case and Costa is way out of reach.

      Front 8

      Sanchez KDB Firmino Coutinho Gundo
      Barrow Lukaku Costa

Will likely go back to Diomande (or whichever cheap Hull player looks to be getting minutes) as 3rd striker once his suspension is up.

Firmino likely to change to Hazard when fixtures swing in Chelsea favor, but will have to weaken in defence to do it.

I think you don't have to be a member to be in HoF, I believe all you have to do is join FFS league. Correct me if I'm wrong anybody.

Where do i find the HoF league?

I think you can join HoF by joining FFS league, but to be able to view standings, you must be logged on!? Therefore a membership is necessary?

    Morning all

    My team currently:

    Foster (pickf)

Walker. Holebas. Pieters. ( Kingsley. Friend)
Sanchez. Sterling. Friminho. Allen ( hojbjerg)

    Aguero. lukaku. Bony.

1.7 itb. Anything you'd do for a hit.
Looking at sterling to hazard maybe next week unsure if it's work taking a hit in given this weeks fixtures?

Guys, looking for some help with my squad. Currently topping all my mini leagues and inside the top 5k but really struggling to come up with long term plan.

    Current team is;

    Grant/Pickford

    Kosc, Valencia, Holebas, Amat, Williams

    Sanchez, Firmino, Capoue, Chadli, Son

    Kun, Lukaku and Deeney

    0.3 ITB and 2 FT.

    Any suggestions?

My plan was a potential -8 which is similar to your thoughts.

        Deeney > Austin
        Son > Hazard
        Chadli > Allan
        Valencia > 5m defender

Chadli has some alright fixtures coming up after the next so little reluctant to sell.

The Theo situation is mainly that he is going to drop substantially in value unless he hits big points. I have managed to trade him for Coutinho which I am comfortable with for the next two weeks and probably the rest of the season.

If Theo continues to drop in price then I can trade Lallana out for him in a few weeks when the Wally situation is a little clearer regarding his role and his fixtures are good again. There are just too many question marks on Theo right now.

Just checked, Theo has dropped 0.2 this week and is now down to what I sold him for on Monday. With Wenger's pressers not really clearing up his fitness enough to remove doubt he may drop again

    Repost..
Help me decide who to get out of two certain players for a hit to replace Snoddy. Those two are none other than Allen and Gundogan.

Otherwise I'll have to play Capoue or Holebas, which is fine but I want to do this before the break which will require me to do other transfer(s).

Might as well take a hit or I won't be able to afford them.

    (1) Allen
    (2) Gundogan

    (1) or (2)? Thanks!

I think I want to pull the trigger and sell Walcott. It will cost me a -4 hit but I think it could be worth it. Too much uncertainty and 2 tough game weeks.

Have Coutinho, Lallana, Chadli & Capoue. Who would you add to replace Walcott??

    Arsene Wenger:

    - on the team news
We have still some uncertainties at the moment because Kieran Gibbs has been touched on his shoulder and I don’t know how will respond to that. I will see today [Thursday]. After, the players who did not travel like Cazorla, Monreal, Walcott - there is still some uncertainty today. The closest to coming back looks to be Walcott. We will have a test with him.

    - on Bellerin
Hector has a test. I left him behind [in midweek] because I was cautious with him. We could have basically forced the issue, he could have played maybe in Bulgaria but he should be alright [for Sunday].

    - on Nacho
He has tests today and tomorrow and then we will decide.

    - on Cazorla
He is similar, he has not practised yet - he will try to go out today and we will see where we go from there. He is a doubt, yes.

I'm waiting for the training pictures and more quotes. I hope he trains today but Wenger has 3 more options to play on right wing: Ramsey, Iwobi and Ox.

He also said: "I believe we have an advantage if we are all at our best. I have a squad of 25 players who are all top class. A game of this stature is not about 11 players, it is about 25. Giroud came on against Sunderland and made the difference. Everyone’s contribution will be vital."

Looking like Wally will only get a cameo if for once Wenger is being cautious. 🙂
Anyway, he has Ramsey back, Iwobi doing well, Ozil and Sanchez doing the job and Giroud back and hitting form.
