Suspensions

With the Christmas programme effectively now underway and games coming thick and fast, so too are the unwelcome cards and suspensions. All the more reason then to keep an eye on the Opta stats available in the members’ area and the new suspension tightrope at the bottom of the sidebar.

With said tightrope already showing the cards from today, you’ll find 2 names now missing from the list; Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross and Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye, who both picked up their fifth yellow cards of the season for fouls committed in games against Wolves and Swansea respectively; they will sit out the midweek fixtures of gameweek 17.

As if the trip to the Etihad for Tony Pulis’ men could get any more difficult, they’ll now have to take on league leaders Manchester City without their influential skipper, and the omens are not good as the last time Shawcross was missing in the league for Stoke, they were thrashed 5-0 at Bolton. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s resources will again be tested by Cabaye’s absence. Already without Guthrie (injured) and Gosling (suspended), Alan Pardew will be glad of Cheick Tiote’s return today to shore things up, but he’ll need to field his fourth different midfield pair in four games when West Brom are the visitors to St James’ Park on Wednesday.

As always on the Suspension Tightrope, there is a constant stream of new faces eager to backfill where others have left, and this week it’s the turn of Nigel Reo-Coker (Bolton), Danny Murphy (Fulham), Kyle Naughton (Norwich) and Paul Scharner (WBA) to take up their places, each earning their fourth yellow card of the season for ‘unsporting behaviour’ in the games today. Martin Jol especially will be sweating over the availability of his Fulham quartet over the Christmas period.

GAMEWEEK 17 BANS

  • David Wheater (Bolton) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 4 matches)
  • Jay Spearing (Liverpool) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 3 matches)
  • Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle) – 5 Yellows (1 match)
  • Dan Gosling (Newcastle) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Second of 3 matches)

Lads just a quick retraction : everton are sh1t, and if they can't beat/ keep clean sheet against norwich - no disrespect intended, baines or ant if their players are worth having. I now officially withdraw the positive comments I wrote about the Mersey sidets.

I'm not but IMO at this rate if everton don't start to pick up pts against these "kinda teams' they could be in a relagation battle. But my main point is that in terms of fantasy gaming - their sh1t and should be kept away from full stop.

I thought they played quite well, but Norwich defended like warriors. Holt's goal was completely against the run of play. Saha showed some nice touches, Drenthe looked very dangerous when he came on, on any other day they would have scored a hatful. Get Drenthe, he has to start next game.

The result was pretty much what I expected. They're a mid table team playing another mid table team.

If you're expecting Everton to put anyone to the sword this season then you're likely to be in for a major disappointment. They'll stay up but this is the kind of result they'll be getting most weeks.

I don't disagree. Their recent form has been a bit poorer than I expected and I expect them to pick up a bit. But yeah they'll finish 10-12 or thereabouts.

    Okay, quick question.
    Should I;
    A) Save transfer, have 2 frees with Naylor, Brown and Dyer on the bench.
    B) Go Dyer > Moses/Gomez now and have 3 starting bench players in case of rotation and/or postponements.

      I'd save it this gameweek.

The deadline this GW is Tuesday. So you only have to wait another 2 days before you get your next free and its doubtful there will be serious adverse weather between now and then.

That way, you'll have 2 frees for the boxing day games, which is when you'll be more likely to need them.

That's what I'm planning on doing anyway.

      A) get rid of Dyer after next GW when you have 2 frees if you have nothing more important. He could start midweek anyway to give one of their players a rest.

See below ...I too am in need of ditching Dyer...he is now a 1pt man for the foreseeable. If you can afford Gomez do it....bad fixtures, but penalties make him an excellent cheap bench player.

I'm considering Tiote myself, Newcastle's fixtures are pretty good and always chance of bonus...also only 4.4 , fairly good ICT stats in the members area for this week. His price will rise.

I've just had a look at your team and you are not in desperate need of two frees. Its a good team.

I always think of transfers in terms of weak links. We have a weak link in Dyer, but he needs to be replaced by someone better. Gomez has terrible fixtures, but he just eased one past Chelsea and is on penalties. That makes him an excellent bench player and far better than Dyer.

For me Tiote fits the bill, cheap, will play, can get bonus, can even score on occasions and rotates perfectly with Walters - who I don't want to play at Man City.

            Brilliant advice, cheers.
I was thinking with the free transfers, all I'd end up doing was Dyer > Gomez anyway so I will probably end up doing it, I expect rotation midweek and all Gomez needs is a good call from the referee and he will give me (or my bench 😕 ) some points..
Will Tiote play further forward with Cabaye out?

Re tiote - He may do, but that's not really his game.

I'm th same with frees, I could wait, but I don't know what I'd do with 2 frees... I don't want to ditch any of my usual first 11 and only Dyer is a problem on my usual bench of Caulker, Ruddy, (one of BAE and Simpson)

    Good Morning my flock,

Welcome to the Church of Football.

let us reflect on two passages:

from André 1:1 (87th minute desecration) "never substitute your best players before the game is truly won."

and from Alan 0:0 (Krul vs Vorm) "and lo, behold to all, never give the armband to a Newcastle player and do not covert thy opponents captain"

    here endeth the lesson.

Hansen was giving AVB major stick on MOTD about taking off Sturridge.

I think he was trying to placate too many of his fringe players and thought that this was a nice easy game to get away with doing it in.

For the congregation, I also submit Hennessey 1:2 (apochryphal): Be tempted ye not by the lure of the Wanderers of Wolverhampton at home. Be true to thine self, playeth Vorm every week and reapeth ye your reward.

For outside of this shall the weeping and gnashing of teeth be.

is it still worth having enrique while all of my rivals in ml have him?
another alternative is verm (or even koscienly) which only a few own him.
the trade-off getting verm is that i need to get rid of shawX, simpson and BAE to fund him.

i am keeping shawX for his two home games, ditching him afterwards.

anyway, do enrique looks like the better option?

It does turn but you have to have a full Spurs quota for gw20 or you will lose out. There is also a wilcard around that time to clear up any unbalance in the squad. Enrique is a good pick. Keep him. Everyone in your mini league will probably have RVP, but you wouldnt be considering getting rid of him!

the only way he is going into my team is if there's an injury to one or more of RVP, Ade, Bale, Silva, Nani or Vermalen. I refuse to part with any of them and to get Rooney in as well as them would leave my team part excellent, part unbelievably pants.

Yes, I sold Rooney yesterday morning as I needed to get rid of O'Hara and decided to go for Nani instead. Got Sturridge in Rooney's place.

Didn't want to get rid of the Roonster in all honesty but at least I got Nani to cover for him and Studge isn't a bad replacement.

Both Nani and Rooney should do well in the coming weeks.

I'm looking for a Dyer replacement to rotate with Walters for the next few games at 4.8m or under.

I'm assuming Tiote is the best option. Swansea mids away stats are pretty dire, and Moses' fixtures are terrible.

I think I'd much rather Gomez or Moses, and play/bench them through their next couple fixtures. Tiote is a DM and more often than not, he'll end up with 2/3 points and a yellow card.

Also as you mentioned, he's going to the ACON, so will need to be transferred out again. Can't see him outscoring the 2 aforementioned wigan cheapies in all honesty

Tiote is just a temporary option really. I think I can make a little money from him and it frees up some money...he's a good Walters rotater...also I'm wildcarding around ACON so that's not too much of a consideration for me.

A good bench needs to maintain price at least, play regularly and offer a prospect. I wish I had 0.1 more for Gomez. Moses is another possibility...but terrible fixtures, can't see him getting more than 2pt for awhile, which is 1pt more than Dyer. I would be able to get him for .4m less than I sold him for though...deflation-tastic.

Spurs aren't exactly known for keeping clean sheets and I don't expect them to do so on Thursday either. Besides, when Chelski score nowadays you can be all but certain that Sturridge will be involved either with the assist or hitting the back of the net himself. I won't consider taking him out.

Ferg, Yak, Ruddy don't make a lot of appeal tbh.

anyone think that liverpool with keep a CS away at wigan?

thinking about getting enrique in, or else my defence will be:
    Jones,BAE, Simpson, ShawX and Brown,
which means that i am probably screwed

Liverpool's defence has to cope with one of the most revived players in the league. I mean, Liverpool will be no match to the might of the reborn Victor Moses

Strictly speaking, Enrique always has a decent chance of attacking potential and is probably one of the better sub 6.0 defenders out there

but he got only 2 assist this season.

I believe he's getting forward quite a bit though. Even so, there aren't too many stand out defenders this year like there are forwards and mids, so the only time you can go wrong is if all of your defenders are sub 5.0 or something

I'll be ditching him after the double GW for Nani or someone cheap so I can upgrade Ba to Rooney when he goes to the African Cup of Nations.

Wait until DGW. He looked poor last week and is bound to get rotated over Christmas. Price will keep dropping if he doesn't perform.

What an amazing football day today!
Might watch Barca too, so that's 1030am to 6pm, get in!

On a ff note, I see totalFPL have predicted 3BP for Simpson, stats seem to say Santon was better though, so is it nonsense?

He normally gets most of the 3bps right so I wouldn't say it's nonsense, far from it.

Just wanted to say that Sunday morning (I have to get up early as have two kids) is the best time for some proper advice and from actual regulars. Managed to have actual conversations without someone shouting something like WILL VDV PLAY!!! at me.

    Back to the kids...tatty-bye.

That happens on the Saturday Surgery. And then you've got the guys who ask the same questions three times even though they've already been answered already

      Thanks Jonty!
