Granted the luxury of an international break, we begin our four-part analysis of our current Watchlist standings by focusing first on goalkeeper acquisition.

The Watchlist is designed to offer a view on our current mid-term player recommendations, based on the prospects spanning the next 4-6 Gameweeks.

You will find our current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on the homepage on desktop, or via the fourth button on the homepage on mobile and tablet.

Normally a position renowned for little transfer activity, the emergence of Burnley’s Tom Heaton as a clear top contender in Fantasy Premier League terms has prompted a re-assessment of our priorities.

The value currently being offered by the Clarets’ skipper is hard to ignore. With two double-figure returns and seven bonus points, he is forcing us to re-consider the potential output offered by the position.

While Heaton failed to produce a clean sheet against Crystal Palace last time out, he still succeeds in holding off the challenge of West Bromwich Albion’s Ben Foster at the summit of our Watchlist rankings, primarily thanks to his proven save point prospects.

Heaton has registered 61 stops compared to Foster’s 37, so despite the Baggies keeper being treated to four strong fixtures (BUR, hul, WAT, SWA) in the next five, Heaton remains the number one target in our opinion.

Gareth McAuley also dents Foster’s appeal. The centre-back can be acquired for 4.7 – an identical price to his keeper – but can offer substantial goal threat in addition to clean sheet potential.

Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford remains highly placed in our rankings, despite the return to fitness of Vito Mannone.

We believe that Pickford will retain his starting role and keep the Italian out of the starting XI, providing us with the only “nailed-on” option in goal for less than 4.5.

Although the Black Cats are still seeking their first clean sheet of the season, the new England call-up, who is ranked second for FPL saves with 42, should continue to provide value. A suitable one-stop keeper option, Pickford excels as an active back-up to Heaton or Foster over the long-haul.

Pickford’s continued appeal underlines the fact that spending big in goal is still very much an unfashionable strategy.

Despite this, there are some clear standout options available for those willing to spare funds – Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois and Tottenham Hotspur stopper Hugo Lloris – are our current top choices.

Both offer the cheapest route into their respective defences, although in both cases, the attacking potential offered by defensive team-mates arguably reduces their appeal.

Marcos Alonso and Danny Rose are currently our preferred cover of the Chelsea and Spurs rearguards: they should be the priority for those seeking to profit from potential clean sheets.

The same can be said for Liverpool’s Loris Karius, who initially appears to be a tempting option priced at 4.9.

But the lack of clean sheets for Jurgen Klopp’s side provide major doubts, while the German has also failed to register a save point in four of his six starts.

With Dejan Lovren offering proven goal threat for 5.0, there is a clear alternative for those willing to gamble on Liverpool’s resilience.

Petr Cech is the other big ticket option. Priced at 5.5, under normal circumstances he would offer a cheaper route into the Arsenal defence by some 0.5.

However, with Hector Bellerin possibly sidelined for up to a month, it could be that Carl Jenkinson emerges as a short-term 5.0 investment. That’s enough to temper enthusiasm in Cech as a keeper option, despite some attractive Emirates meetings to come.

The same principle applies to David de Gea, who offers limited scope at 5.5 given that Matteo Darmian (5.0) and perhaps even Phil Jones (4.7), offer cheaper alternatives in Jose Mourinho’s defence.

Having ousted popular budget option Eldin Jakupovic, Hull City’s David Marshall now offers us a contender in his own right.

The Tiger’s defence has offered little encouragement over the campaign but has shown signs of improvement in recent outings.

Marshall has shipped just two goals in his last two Gameweeks and has returned two save points in three of his six starts.

Mike Phelan’s men have kind short-term fixtures, giving Marshall the edge over Bournemouth’s Artur Boruc and Middlesbrough’s Victor Valdes around the 4.5 price bracket.

In the first two cases, we can acquire cheaper defensive options with attacking potential in Michael Dawson (4.4) and Simon Francis (4.5), whilst George Friend (4.5) is the same price as Valdes.

Below this, our options are severely limited by both injury and uncertainty on starting roles.

Watford’s Heurelho Gomes is treated to some excellent short-term fixtures but, having been forced off in the 6-1 mauling at Anfield in Gameweek 11, he remains an injury concern at this point.

Similarly, Southampton’s Fraser Forster currently finds himself towards the foot of our ladder, limited by a Gameweek 12 injury doubt having withdrawn from the England squad.

The demise of Stoke City’s Lee Grant as an option has delivered the biggest recent blow in this position.

Grant, who’s currently on loan from Derby County, has performed admirably in the absence of Jack Butland and has offered us an excellent budget option having been priced at 4.0 initially.

While it’s difficult to pinpoint when Butland will return to action following several setbacks in his recuperation from an ankle injury, the Potters number one has returned to training and will surely push for a recall imminently.

Certainly, investment in Grant at this point appears risky, which is a big loss given Stoke’s obliging fixtures.

After a decent week last week (my first green arrow of the entire season!!), I am not liking the look of my team for this week:

    Pickford
    Clyne - Walker - Pieters
    Sanchez - Firmino - Coutinho - Shaqiri
    Austin - Aguero - Benteke

    Cech - Fletcher - Amat - Smith

Think I can just about survive with that defence this week, but in attack I have 5 players in 2 games (LIV vs SOU, CRY vs MCI), Shaqiri injured, Sanchez maybe injured/rested, and starting to really get punished by not having any of Lukaku, Hazard and Costa.

So, got 0.4 ITB and 1FT - any suggestions?! 🙂

    Thanks!

It's crazy. I'm sure we'll get the rise again come Friday night (remember a good deal of transfers are done then), plus he'll continue to rise over the next few weeks (because that's the gamble we've taken on him!) but yeah they clearly don't have a verification system in place in fpl towers for this kind of thing, which is a bit shoddy!!

        1. Worzel Gummidge
            9 years, 1 month ago

Doesn't help when false tweets get sent out on here. If it is a case of any rumour gets a flag then so be it but I would question that professionalism. Think Mark needs to confirm how the end to end flag system works since he, in fact, works for them 🙂

I own Haz and dont really care tbh but it just pure comedy gold and if I was involved I would feel pretty embarrassed about my shoddy work.

Any londoners about or anyone who has been to the O2 recently enough?

Trying to figure out where to stay. Currently looking at somewhere very close to Kings Cross. There's a tube station really close to the O2 so assuming it's fine getting down there on tube? What about on way back? Don't mind a bit of queuing as long as they'll go late enough, but seems like they do.

Kings Cross is a bit rough. Canary Wharf much nicer and they have an ice rink this time of year usually.

You could try this, near enough to Canary Wharf and the O2.

No, you could probably walk it. About a mile I guess.

No problem for sightseeing, just get on the DLR.

Where you have booked sounds fine. I'd stay there rather than Kings X for sure.

                  Hey Andy

You want to get somewhere with links to North Greenwich, so you need somewhere on the Jubilee (grey) line if you want ease of access. Depends if you wana be near to the o2, or just want to be based in Central London then head over that way for whatever youre doing thetrt

What do you want to know? Give me a shout, I live nearby so I can help you out 🙂

Ease of getting there is more important I suppose than being super close.

So if it's somewhere that has tube links then I'm cool with that, doesn't necessarily have to be right on top of the O2.

If DLR is easy enough to use then perhaps as Ruth says above I should do that.

Based in central London would be good though because we're going down the day before so won't want to be miles away from everywhere. Will be arriving at Victoria coach station most likely.

It's always relatively easy to reach, just navigate any tube to link up with the jubilee line to get you to North Greenwich. It's really easy, it's about 30-40 mins from central (if I'm taking Kings X as central...)

OK sure, makes sense. From Victoria, you can get basically everywhere on the tube. Be tempted to maybe base around Tower Hill or Aldgate Area or something - lots of travel lodge etc round there, plus easy route onto the DLR/other lines.

North Greenwich is just the o2, basically, but Greenwich (Cutty Sark) is really nice and worth a visit. There's a great park nearby too.

Anything more specific you want to know? 🙂

                  TripAdvisor says 1.6 miles. 😕

I have never stayed down there for the O2 but I have stayed in Canary Wharf a few times and you can see the O2 just across the river. Maybe it's a bit further than it looks.

Yep not too bad, you're by the overground (orange) which is kind of the tube but not quite, so you'd always wind up hitting Euston again and again to get to central London.

A factor to bear in mind is that some lines (e..g central, jubilee, some northern) are 24h on weekends but the majority aren't... If your o2 thing finishes late, you might need an uber from Euston to get to South Hampstead as the overground closes about 12:30...

Have you had a look at airbnb for London? It can be a lot nicer, and you can get somewhere fairly central for a commensurate price to just buying a hotel stay 🙂

What about the one below? That is near Canary Wharf which should be good for tube access etc?

Yep that's probably perfect for you - quick hop over to the o2 and also easy to get to central.

Have you got Citymapper on your phone? Download that and it'll help you navigate London with ease 🙂

Yeah I have that from previous trips - super handy! 🙂

I think that hotel might be the one. 206 euro for 2 nights, 10 minute walk from Canary Wharf station which is only 1 stop away from O2 so will hopefully be okay for getting there and coming back.

Plus it'll be fine getting to other places in London.

Looks like it's a decent enough area from what Ruth is saying above too

Yeah it's the financial heart of London (the City is more insurance led now). I live about 5 mins walk from the wharf, and it isn't too bad a place for sure :). The wharf is kind of clinical because it's very banky, but that doesn't sound like a bad price and you'll at least have a nice quiet stay if you're there on the weekend 🙂

Let me know if you have any further questions dude

One last question - is there many bars/restaurants nearby (Canary Wharf) - just thinking of perhaps somewhere to go after the gig

Yeah, it's a highly corporate area so stuff like bars and restaurantsare everywhere, normally to cater for the after work crowd - there's like an all bar one then also some more upmarket places.

The o2 also has a lot of bars and restaurants within. Recommend showing up slightly earlier than your gig cos these get rammo 🙂

There's a Jamie Oliver Italian in Canary Wharf that I quite like, informal, decent food, not too pricey. Maybe before the gig rather than after though.

Yeah that's pretty standard, there's also like Carluccios and Wagamama etc etc in the main area (your Citymapper can find it)

If you're a fan of burgers, try Bleeker St. It's insanely good 🙂

What are peoples thoughts on this line up, is it worth transferring out Sanchez to spread some value across the defence? Arsenal have a pretty good run of fixtures coming up.

            Heaton, (Jaku)
            Morgan, Clyne, Pieters (Smith, Holebas)
            Hazard, Sanchez, Firmino, Allen (Capoue)
            Austin, Aguero (C), Lukaku

"Heaton has registered 61 stops" - don't be promoting my keeper dammit! Points even without clean sheets.
