After checking in on the latest movements of the goalkeepers on our Watchlist, our focus now shifts to the risers and fallers in defence.

Having registered five consecutive clean sheets, the form of the Chelsea rearguard has forced us to reassess the potential offered by premium assets at the back, while a run of four home fixtures in the next six brings Spurs defenders back into consideration.

But that’s certainly not to say that value can’t be found elsewhere, with a stack of mid-price candidates providing viable options for our five-man backlines.

You will find our current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on the homepage on desktop, or via the fourth button on the homepage on mobile and tablet.

West Bromwich Albion’s Gareth McAuley, who’s currently the fourth most popular defender in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with an ownership of 24.3%, sits at the summit of our standings.

The centre-back has already scored twice in the top-flight this season, and his goal threat, combined with some very strong short-term fixtures (BUR, hul, WAT, SWA) over the coming period, make him a standout option, coming in at 4.7 in FPL – the same price as team-mate Ben Foster.

It’s not just McAuley who has caught our eye from the Baggies backline, though, with Chris Brunt another interesting option.

Brunt has started West Brom’s last two matches in midfield, offering us ‘out of position’ potential, but his starting spot may not necessarily be secure given Albion have suffered with injuries and suspensions over the past few weeks.

Both McAuley and Brunt found the net in Northern Ireland’s 4-0 win over Azerbaijan, with the latter also providing an assist. Considering he takes many of West Brom’s set-pieces – a key strength for the Baggies – Brunt boasts the prospects of assists, having served up 14 over the previous two seasons.

Chelsea’s in-form Marcos Alonso has emerged as the key top bracket target, having added a goal and assist to five successive shut-outs since his arrival on the teamsheet in Gameweek 6.

The Spaniard’s raids from left wing-back mean he promises attacking returns even in difficult match-ups, which could see him prosper even over the Blues’ testing short-term schedule.

Chelsea’s fixtures also ease considerably from Gameweek 15, providing the platform for Alonso’s 2.8% ownership and 6.0 price to climb further.

Tottenham’s Danny Rose is the other premium choice defender to features in the top echelons of the Watchlist.

Price is a key factor in Rose being favoured over team-mate Kyle Walker, with the former setting us back 5.9 in FPL, compared to 6.1 for Walker.

But Rose has also offered the greater attacking threat over the last four Gameweeks, averaging a shot every 40.9 minutes, compared to every 183 minutes for Walker.

He has also provided superior assist potential, averaging a key pass every 47.7 minutes over the same period, compared to every 73.2 minutes for the Spurs right-back.

Elsewhere in the mid-price bracket, Stoke City’s Erik Pieters has edged above Watford’s Jose Holebas and Bournemouth’s Adam Smith.

The left-back rises to prominence mostly due to the Potters strong short-term fixtures (BOU, wat, BUR), while he also benefits from the doubt surrounding Lee Grant’s starting role given Jack Butland is now back in training.

Holebas and Smith both fell off the suspension tightrope in the last round of fixtures, and will subsequently sit out next weekend’s fixtures.

Both players will likely enjoy a rise following Gameweek 12, though, due to their attacking promise.

Holebas holds the edge at this point given that Watford face five strong fixtures in six upon his return from suspension, making him a viable starter, even in an FPL 3-4-3.

Hull City’s Michael Dawson and Middlesbrough’s George Friend are both “up and comers” in this bracket – the pair come in at just 4.4 and 4.5 respectively in FPL and, like Holebas and Smith, boast the potential for attacking returns.

Hull also remain in the middle of a very favourable part of their schedule, while ‘Boro’s fixtures do improve slightly over the coming month.

Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren hovers near the top of our rankings as our preferred Reds option, with his set-piece threat and price tag offering some attraction, despite the lack of clean sheets for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Croatian is just ahead of Leicester City’s Christian Fuchs, who slips in our estimations due to the absence of the injured Kasper Schmeichel, despite the promise of some kind short-term fixtures.

With a strong goal threat and some improving fixtures, Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk remains firmly in our thoughts.

But with Cedric Soares closing in on a first-team return following an ankle injury, the 4.9-priced right-back is set to replace the Dutchman on the Watchlist due to his kinder price tag and assist potential. Soares could well return for Gameweek 12.

Found lower down in our standings is Man City’s John Stones. We’re keeping faith in the England international given City’s schedule remains favourable, while his recent impressive BPS scores are also a contributing factor – Stones was in line for a second successive match with bonus points against ‘Boro before their late equaliser.

The Arsenal defence is represented by Laurent Koscielny lower down the ranks but could eventually be a key factor in our defensive plans.

Hector Bellerin is a doubt for the Gameweek 12 trip to Manchester United and it is suggested that he will be sidelined for a month with his ankle injury.

Should that be the case, we will likely promote Carl Jenkinson as an option in the Watchlist and, priced at just 5.0, he’ll likely edge his way into the top ranks as a short-term option during Bellerin’s absence.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Defence: Budget v Premium

The HoF leaders have had continued success this season thanks to their cheap defence. The most owned players amongst this elite cost 5m or under.

We anticipate that may change soon with a Chelsea defender looking key from GWK 15 onwards.

What is the state of your defence? Is it cheap? Are you looking to spend more?

Or have you already splashed the cash on the likes of Arsenal and Spurs defender and think they are worth the extra outlay?

Finally, are there any sub 4.5m defenders worth getting now that Amat has lost his place?

currently have Bellerin, Alonso & Fuchs, as well as Amat & Lenihan.

Will likely replace Bellerin with another big hitter.

      I currently have Alonso - Mustafi - Lovren - Holebas - Amat

I suspect this is more expensive than most but other than Sanchez I haven't felt the pinch too much.

I'm looking to downgrade Mustafi potentially in order to afford Hazard to someone like Brunt to give me just Alonso as my pricey defender (he's looking great).

Depending on my transfers I may change Mustafi to Luiz at some point and double on Chelsea defence.

I think as you say, a Chelsea defender is looking great value, especially someone like Alonso with attacking returns. Arsenal have some good fixtures in the short term after United too but longer term I'm not inclined to keep Mustafi any further than I need to

my most expensive defender is Vertonghen at 5.5.... cheap has been working so far with the likes of Holebas and Smith. but they are now both suspended. Looking at Smith>>>Alonso (I do not quite fancy Cherries fixtures after Stoke). I am not planning to go with 2 premium (>6.0) defenders until they start making it worth the cash.

I've owned Walker since he was 5.5 so pleased with that. Rest of my defence looks OKish. Would love Alonso but don't think I'll be able to find the cash:

      Walker Holebas McAuley Friend Amat

Probably going to do McAuley -> Cedric when fixtures turn worse for Baggies.

Dirt cheap defence of Brunt, McAuley, Holebas, Cameron, Amat.

Looking at downgrading KDB to 7-8m option, to upgrade Cameron & Amat to Alonso & Cedric in GW14-15.

Leftover money may upgrade a Baggies defender to Rose or Lukaku to Kane.

      Currently have Morgan-Stones-Williams-Holebas-Amat.

Happy to continue with a non-playing 5th defender and play three of four every week rather than waste a transfer.

I'm hoping to free up a little more cash to bring in a Chelsea defender in a couple of weeks. (Foster to Mannone, I already have Pickford, should give me enough with what I already have in the bank).

Not been very successful with my backline all season so feel that going budget and investing on attacking players is the way to go. Ideally looking at WBA defnders in coming gameweeks.

maybe u werent successful cos u didnt have the big guns. i had walker bellerin and kosc and although im now looking to downgrade both the arsenal they are the top points earners so the argument cheap was the way to go isnt correct unless u nailed which cheapies which was far far harder than getting the big guns in

5.5 5.0 5.0 4.5 4.0 has been my structure so far. Should not have kept Williams for that many weeks. My 5.5 and 5.0 will most likely become a 6.0 and 4.5, but I can't see that happen overnight.

I don't feel much need to replace Amat. I think unless on a wildcard there are always more important transfers and proving you have four other playing defenders it should rarely if ever cause a problem.

I've got a mixed bag in defence. Pretty average spend I would assume:

      Alonso / PVA / McAuley / Pieters / Amat

I've had PVA from the start but have not had the sore transfer to ever replace him. I think the week after next he will become Cedric.

Currently with Walker, Koscielny, Smith, McAuley, Holebas.
      - with 2 of them suspended I might've traded Smith, but for early gw scrambling to get Hazard in via a FT and a hit.

I'll still be focusing on my Midfield, going a bit cheaper in Def (Pieters, Friend, Nyom) to get some Liverpool Mid cover from gw13 onward.

I've got expensive with Bellerin, Koscielny, Alonso, Lovren and Amat.

In previous seasons I've rejected my defence and it has let me down so sticking with a top 6 defence this season with the hope to still get a 40+ week on those occasional gameweeks when everyone gets 20-30.

i started out cheap and was basically getting the pts it deserved.
      I've upgraded possibly too far.
Just feel with atm defence as a whole could be a differential. A lot of sides with cheap defences and weak 4th mids.
2 stronger defenders + Walcott seems more attractive than Sanchez + 2 cheap defenders over the longer term.

      Mustafi-Alonso-Fuchs- A.Smith-Amat.

Good chance Fuchs will be downgraded to a 5m defender and Amat upgraded in a double FT next week just to have 5 playing defenders and improve rotation.

I started the season with a relatively pricey defence of:

      Terry • Shaw • Stones • Friend • Amat

because I thought there was decent value in the 5.5m defenders from the top clubs.

Now I'm back to my usual cheapies:

      Morgan • Lovren • Holebas • Smith • Amat

If an attacking player becomes 'essential', I always look to my defence for a downgrade.

I started the season with Monreal, Stones and Valencia as my regular back three, with Amat and Friend on the bench. In hindsight that was the wrong way to go, I'd have been better off starting off with cheaper defenders and beefing up my attackers.

Given my lowly position overall (880k) I may go a little maverick and double up on Chelsea defenders (bringing in Alonso) for gw15 onwards.

So: Alonso, Francis, Evans, Arnot, Coleman (will transfer him out next 2 weeks most likely to uplevel Arnot and get Heaton.

      Walker, Williams, Holebas, Evans, Amat

      Alonso / Monreal / Holebas / Pieters / Amat.

      Have
      Alonso 5.9m
      Fuchs 5.4m
      Holebas 4.5m
      McNair 4.3m
      Amat 4.1m
      Total 24.2m

Whenever I might have an extra FT going unused will look to upgrade either of Amat of McNair to a BOU or SOT def.

The avg spend might be a little on the lower side but as long as Holebas provides he will be in the playing XI.

I am a budget defense from day one and only spend money on premium defensive players after they show that they are worth the money. If they are able to score as well or better than a midfielder at the same price, then he may be worth the money.

I have one premium defender (Alonzo 6.0m) then 3 at 4.8m each & one at 4.7 million. All are starters and have collectively produced 6 goals, 6 assists, 13 CS & 11 bonus points over the first 11 gameweeks. I see no reason to spend money on more than one premium defender at this time.

As for keepers, Heaton 4.8m is my starting keeper every week since he is not only out scoring all keepers, after 11 weeks he is averaging 5.55 saves per game and 7 bonus points total. Compare that to Coutois 5.5m who has 45 total points which is exactly 7 points difference. Without the bonus points, both keepers would be level on points even though Courtois has 6 CS & Heaton only has 3 CS. Given these stats, why spend the extra 0.7m on Coutois who by the way, has no bonus points and only 3 save points over 11 games.

Friend 4.5m defender is a starter, plays 90 minutes/game and has 2 assists as well as 2 CS & 5 bonus points so far this season. He is cheap enough to sit on the bench as coverage for injuries & rotations while having the potential go get you more than 2 points given his attacking threat.

Of those three, McAuley worth paying the premium. Evans will be injured soon and Nyom will see bench time when Brunt reverts to left back. Brunt is a slice of fried gold if I can squeeze another 0.2 out of you.

Evans was hardly injured at all last season, why would he be "injured soon"?

After only Chelsea kept a CS last week, am not sure it is worth investing in premium defenders any more unless they have a goal threat. Clean sheets seem harder to come by this year.

        Pickford (Heaton)
        Francis, Alonso, Williams (Holebas, Amat)
        Firmino, Ozil, Hazard, Gündogan (Capoue)
        Lukaku(C Aguero(vc) Bony

Wish Everton had some better fixtures, Lukaku would solve my problems with getting Hazard and keeping Mustafi (Luiz in a few weeks).

His stats are pretty bad over the last 4 weeks although granted he has kept up the points.

Do we think he's going to be consistent for a good few weeks yet?

I can get Kane or Costa instead (or keep Ibra) but it will cost me -4

If I called his transfer right my match with Stilicho comes down to

me - Brunt, Vertonghen, Wally, Austin
          v
he - Mustafi, Walker, Capoue, Benteke + 8pts

          Could be tight 🙂

Ok completely hypotehtically, injuries form etc will all no doubt destroy this plan. But on paper over the next 3 weeks how do these 5 transfers look:

          Moses > Hazard
          Capoue > Fletcher
          Bellerin > Alonso
          Lovren > 4.5m
          Lukaku > 6.7m

          Would leave me with:

          Heaton / Pickford

          Daniels / Alonso / Evans / Amat / 4.5m

          Hazard / Firmino / Coutinho / Sanchez / Fletcher

          Aguero / Austin / 6.7m

          Any thoughts?!

            Good Morning,

Any Sunderland fans out there? What are the chances of Anichebe starting this weekend. I know he hurt a rib but will that automatically rule him out for the next game? Thinking of bringing him in as a third striker to finance my Hazard move.

With Hernandez, Diomande and Keane out, do we think Sunderland have a decent chance of a clean sheet against Hull?

Sounds crazy i know (It's Sunderland!) But keep Snodgrass quit and i can't see where the goals will come from.

Seriously considering playing Kone ahead of Koscielny.

No worries! Yeah Ibra out is a blow to Utd and they haven't been great going forward, you're right.

Although Rashford could well be up front and his pace could cause trouble. Bellerin out is a blow for Arsenal's defense as well.

Will Mou play for 0-0 again? Normally he is extra negative for the big games, It's a tough one.

I'm playing Kone. Even with those players Hull have managed one away goal only so far this season.

Is Bruntinho nailed on? Probably should have asked this before I bought him, but hey ho.

I think he should be. Considering him as a Bellerin replacement

Last season it never seemed the right time to play AOA and it looked like a really rubbish chip.

Had little regard for it season so blew it early to try and catch the form of Capoue.

Every week since I've needed it back!

I still vaguely follow the notion that Aguero performs just as well in tougher games. It's KDB I'll be ditching then

And looking at them, 1 tough attacking game from 5 there tbh.

MEN is a great source for stories. Well connected at both clubs...better than the nationals for sure.
