Diego Costa crowns another professional away performance from Antonio Conte’s men as Chelsea run out 1-0 winners over Middlesbrough. Elsewhere, Eden Hazard frustrates, while Marcos Alonso confirms his reputation as the most forward-thinking of defensive options. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s Teesside tussle.

On the Rise

Diego Costa
The Spaniard’s relentless form continued with an opportunistic strike, his tenth of the season and his fifth goal in the last six Gameweeks.

The goal, plus the fact that 10% of FPL managers handed Costa the armband, will again ramp up the pressure on those holding Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku following yesterday’s blanks and with toughening fixtures looming for the pair.

Still sitting on four bookings, Costa has now navigated through six Premier League outings without earning the caution that will trigger a one-match ban. Those who have held off investment on that basis will be beginning to wonder if it will arrive before the Gameweek 19 cut-off.

Costa will now be free to face the Spurs defence in Gameweek 13 and follows that with a crunch trip to the Etihad.

However, from Gameweek 15, Chelsea’s fixtures are nothing short of superb and, assured of starts over the busy Christmas spell, Costa’s stock seems destined to rise further.

While Hazard clearly represents a key midfield investment, the prospect of doubling up on Chelsea’s twin threats looks difficult to resist from Gameweek 15 onwards – barring that potential ban.

Marcos Alonso
The left wing-back has now returned a clean sheet in each of his six starts for Chelsea.

Curiously, Alonso has returned just a single bonus point in that time – mainly because, of all the four FPL defenders fielded, he returns the fewest defensive actions.

However, Alonso’s attacking promise was again evident at the Riverside.

Pushing forward almost as a left winger, he is clearly benefiting from linking with Eden Hazard, with defences distracted by the Belgian’s menace and leaving space for Alonso to exploit.

His end product was lacking and often is, but, given the frequency of his attacks and his presence in the box from both open play and set-pieces, further attacking returns look inevitable.

Coupled with Chelsea’s peerless resilience, Alonso appears to be the obvious top bracket defensive target.

In Decline

Eden Hazard
It’s incredibly harsh to knock Hazard following the first blank in five Gameweeks and, while his form and potential as a Fantasy asset remains far from “in decline”, our confidence in the Belgian as a rounded captain candidate can be questioned.

Having earned a reputation in previous seasons as an asset heavily biased towards home fixtures, he has so far reinforced that theory with his returns to this point. Hazard has now produced just a single goal on his travels: only 28 of his 82 points have arrived on the road.

While that will be a minor concern for most, it’s clear that Hazard is still a work in progress as an all-round candidate for the armband.

He has the advantage over Costa at Stamford Bridge but, home and away, the striker has a clear edge as a reliable and consistent scorer of points. Costa has scored in six of his past seven road trips.

Despite today’s failing, Hazard’s stock has to remain sky-high ahead of Chelsea’s festive fixtures and his place at the top of the Watchlist is untouched.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Tough dilemma for me this week:

Is Walcott (BOU) to Coutinho (SUN) worth -4?

Current midfield is: Haz, Firmino, Walcott, Siggy.

    1. Dr Mantis Toboggan

Definitely not for a -4 unless Walcott is confirmed out for whatever reason

I guess we won't really no whether Walcott will miss out unless his wife has the baby before this weekend. Just worried about Coutinho's ownership and being highly captained this week.

I'd still be considering it even if Walcott had hauled this week tbf. It's more due to Coutinho's form, high ownership and being one of the favourites for captaincy in GW13.

“It’s very unusual [to play someone after that],” Wenger said. “I chose him because Alexis is a guy who can take people on and I knew that would be a quality that would work. He is good on the counter-attack, good in short spaces as well. He’s always a player who is not scared of anybody.
“He played very well in the first half but we didn’t give him enough service in the second half because we dropped off too much and we played too many balls in our own half. We didn’t give him enough support by coming out more. For a guy who played a decisive game on Wednesday morning, and then travelling after, it’s remarkable.”
In the end it was Olivier Giroud and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who made the difference from the bench, and Wenger believes our squad depth will be a key factor in this season’s title challenge.
“When you’re 1-0 down and you come back to 1-1 with one minute to go, it feels like more than a draw, that’s for sure,” the manager said. “I hope it strengthens the belief inside the squad that no matter what happens, we can always come back.
“As long as you’re playing many big games, you can give games to everybody. It’s more than that. It’s just the understanding and camaraderie in the side. It’s the common target you share. Sometimes a player won’t play in October and then afterwards he’ll play every game until January. That’s part of it.”

Still easier than Pep. Even if Pep says stuff like "If Aguero is fit, he will play", I just don't trust him to play Aguero if he's fit. I'm stuck with 3 City players and it's a nightmare.

It looks like this week was a good week to take an eight point hit it only cost me 1 point more then if I had done nothing.

The only problem is I am considering another 8 point hit next week to really sort the team out and go full on 3-5-2. Anicibe (sub striker had planned to get him before his brace this week and cash in on lukaku)
It does depend if sanchez falls or pedro rises.

    A midfield of

hazard, sanchez, Redmond Firmino and coutino looks tempting.

Plus it will justify playing the price market this week.

Sorry thinking out loud this is one to be saved to the note pad!

I'd be going for Sánchez but i'm worried that he'll be on the bench. These games are primed for Giroud(and Sánchez is more effective on the left against a deep block) so it's a matter of whether he plays on the wing and Iwobi is on the bench once-more come Sunday. He does have an extra day rest with Bournemouth on Sunday(although PSG on Wednesday) and League Cup the following midweek(a nailed on rest) so I can see Arséne playing him vs Bournemouth.

Teams is a right mess. These are the 4 options I'm deciding on. Which would you do?

    Foster
    Alonso Holebas Stones
    Hazard Firmino Coutinho DeRoon
    Costa Aguero Lukaku

    (Grant, Allen Martina 4.0)
    1FT 0ITB

    A) Stones Martina ➡ Brunt Pieters -4
    B) Aguero Martina Allen ➡ Kane McAuley Sigurdsson -8
    C) Aguero Stones Allen ➡ Kane McAuley Walcott -8
    D) Lukaku Stones Allen ➡ Kane Pieters Winks -8

2 FTs and 2.9itb. Would love some suggestions on the transfers I should make?

    Foster - Pickford
    Smith - Evans - Britos - Pieters - Amat
    Sanchez - Firmino - Coutinho - Gundogan - Capoue
    Kun - Lukaku - Austin

    I was thinking Sanchez/Gundogan to Hazard/Walcott

Yeah I think I can wait as well. It's just the prices that are going to hurt but luckily with his blank his purchases will slow down

Leave it for midweek I reckon, see what Sánchez does against PSG and whether Wenger drops any hints on his availability for Bournemouth.

Yeah I think gundogan is definitely going for me. I can afford the likes of Walcott and Siggy in a straight swap allowing me to also keep sanchez. Guess I'll have to see how midweek games pan out.

        Thanks for the replies

Actually Pedro could be a nice differential to Hazard as well, and he's an easy in for Gundogan.

Seems to have nailed his spot with a string of good performances

Redmond is the allen replacement for me.
However it will take an 8 point hit and watching the price rises/falls to get it right.

Southampton's fixtures are ridiculously easy on paper after the everton game.

I'm at about 150k now but I was as high as 2k at one stage.

I'm only on 27 points this week (with Capoue points added) but have both Foster and Evans so a CS is really needed

I am at 45k at the moement.

But I think most of it is down to getting lucky with a hoelbas and Kocielny 15 each,
So I am that much ahead of most of the rest still.

Got those Koscielny and Holebas points myself as well.

They certainly helped. But Defoe has worked wonders for me. Can't remember a 7m striker doing so well for me in my FPL career.

He's been very cautious to not get that yellow.

Can see owning him at some point in the season but all I want is the big differential in Kane now.

There are so many options this year that I don't think anyone has the 'essential' tag of a Aguero/RvP/Suárez/Demel of previous FPL seasons.

      1. pundit of punts
        • 12 Years

Attackers not so much yes till now. Though you can argue that Liverpool mids have been close to essential till now and I expect that to continue throughout the season.

Chelsea and Spurs and Arsenal defenses are going to be pretty essential during the festive period imo.

Defoe isn't leaving my team unless he is injured.
