Nothing can be taken for granted this season.

Pep Guardiola’s teamsheet, Sergio Aguero’s ability to fluctuate from a frustrating liability to an essential goal machine and the Liverpool midfield: blessed with brilliance and then cruelly cursed by misfortune.

It was Manchester City who provided the early rise and fall on today’s rollercoaster, first reassuring some with Aguero’s presence on the teamsheet, while disappointing owners of Kevin De Bruyne, John Stones and Ilkay Gundogan.

Then Aguero took over.

Like Harry Kane in Gameweek 12, he transformed the most ordinary team performance into a personal haul that revived his stock and forced an immediate re-assessment of plans.

Strategies were re-written with Aguero’s brace, only to be torn up by the events that were to follow at Anfield.

We had such expectations of Jurgen Klopp’s attacking three against Sunderland but, when the whistle blew on Merseyside, we were left mainly with blanks, and the scars of Roberto Firmino hobbling off and Phillipe Coutinho stretchered from the field.

Following minor concerns for the Brazilian and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard over the international break, this latest setback appears far more significant.

We should perhaps wait on a scan and the full prognosis but, already the reaction to Coutinho’s agony has been marked: he tops the Fantasy Premier League “transfers out” column and will surely continue to shed owners before we know the true extent of the damage.

A possible tragedy in Liverpool’s superb season, for some Fantasy managers, the loss of Coutinho will be a game changer that opens up a new and all too convenient strategy.

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s relentless form that continued today in a dramatic 5-4 Swansea City victory lifts the Icelander to the forefront of our transfer thinking.

Along with Chelsea’s Pedro, he will surely vie to replace a potentially stricken Coutinho and, in doing so, free up funds to investigate Diego Costa, or more likely, the Harry Kane option in attack.

Those previously considering an exit for Aguero, myself included, may now be presented with an alternative route.

The 33% owned Romelu Lukaku could now be sacrificed with funds liberated from Coutinho’s sale providing a means to acquire Kane.

Aguero, thanks to his goals and a cruel twist of fate at Anfield, could now be locked in once again.

The City striker, along with the unfortunate Coutinho, were part of a turbulent day that offered a stark reminder to all of just how quickly fortunes can shift.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

They'll still create plenty of chances. If you can afford Firmino why not? I would if I could but looks like it's gonna be Pedro as I wanna upgrade Lukaku to Kane

      I like this as a midfield 4:

      Hazard - Firmino - Sigurdsson - Walcott

As soon as he hit the deck yesterday, he started waving his hand in agony. He looked even more pained when they started messing around with his foot. Don't think we'll see him till next year from what I seen.

I've sold him already as despite wanting to play sensibly and patiently this year, I'm ultimately someone who loves an excuse to make a transfer.

This is a game at the end of the day, and you play it the way you want (even if that means an OR of six figures every year!)

On Walcott, I am a little concerned about parental leave although that will be for 1 game only if that I expect.

Anyone else believe that Liverpool will start to struggle if Coutinho is indeed out for a while? To me, the team revolved around him and I can now see returns from the likes of Firmino start to decline markedly in his absence.

Firmino was scoring for fun last year when Cout was injured. Certainly if you have you keep him.

How are Kun sellers feeling? I feel a bit burnt obviously but I still believe it was just really bad luck and I believe I did the right thing. I needed a better 4th mid than Allen and could not ignore Costa any longer. I watched the City game and wasn't impressed at all. Lots of possession without creating much. 2 fluky goals for Aguero and I would never have captained him anyway and if it wasn't for Coutinho's injury, I believe the effect of selling him would have hurt much less. I got Costa and Siggy in for Kun and Allen. 5+10 points in, 12+4(the hit) out. Net points -1 but my team looks much better going forward. I watched the Chelsea game and was very encouraged by Costa's performance. Could have easily got 1or 2 more assists if his mates finished better. I look and selling Aguero as a long term move. I will assess after Xmas fixtures are over in 6-8 GWs time but on paper, I think my moves will pay off.

Those who sold Aguero, what were your moves and has it paid off?

I am thinking of selling Aguero now. Looking at the fixtures I can see Kane and Costa outscoring him over the next five weeks. Plus with rotation I can see Aguero missing a game (which Kane and Costa will not).

Everyone saying Kun continues to punish you - but the one who has punished most is Costa. Keeps delivering, top points scorer in FPL and about £2.5m cheaper.

Depends on your TV and who else you have. What your defense looks like also is a factor. A lot of people have gone too thin in defense and over Xmas fixtures, this will hurt. Games tend to be low scoring because of tired legs.

This. Kun just got lucky last night. Costa's form is way better and more importantly the form of his teammates. Nolito and Sterling are in dire form, Pep keeps changing the team. All of this has affected Aguero's returns over the last few weeks. City are struggling at the moment even if scrapping their way to wins. They are beating small teams with great difficulty. The next 2 months will be the real test.

If Aguero's in the top three high scoring forwards in FPL when City are playing badly and he's missed games through suspension and rotation, surely that's an argument for him not against. When they do settle and start playing at their best, how many is he going to score?

I got in Siggy he got me 10 points. Now it's all upto Ibra to score a brace and not make me feel like an idiot.

Both of Kun's goals were pretty luck but that's how you get burnt in FPL. I still would have sold him for Kane this week.

I sold for Ibra so I can do Lukaku to Kane next week. So yet to see whether it's paid off although I think it will over next few weeks. People with good team value can afford this

      Hazard, Mane, Firmino, Siggy
      Aguero, Kane, Austin

But since I can't a sacrifice has to be made. Dropping Aguero who I won't captain for ages seems the best move

Some can afford that with a decent defence. There's no doubt Aguero will score goals when he plays but he is probably going to be rotated and it's not that big of a risk to go without for a while since he won't be captained

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Coutinho replacements.

He's the most popular midfielder in FPL but it looks like Philippe Coutinho is set for a spell on the sidelines.

We don't know the extent of his injury yet, but it looks like at best he could miss a week or two. It could be even longer.

What are you planning to do about Coutinho if you own him?

Who do you replace him with, should he be out?

Hi Jonty, I guess the obvious replacements for me would be Firmino or Manè, but I'm going to wait on further injury news before making a decision.

I'm waiting too as I'm genuinely undecided. I have Kane in place already so don't need to worry about that. Whichever mid I get all depends on whether I want to be able to afford Costa in GWK 15 or not. If so I need to go for a sub 8m mid so Walcott looks ideal. If not I'd consider Ozil. Like Sigurdsson I think he's going to be a steady scorer from now on til over Christmas.

I'd rather have Costa than Aguero for GW15 onwards. Ok he got a brace. But what about last week? Aguero 2 points, Kane 13.

Of course Aguero will keep scoring regularly but considering Spurs and Chelsea fixtures I'm ok without Kun - I hope.

This being said, Kane-Aguero-Austin/Defoe + Hazard AND Pedro to cover Chelsea might be the best way to go. But would have to take a few hits to take that road now...

Jonty- Any advice on the which may be the better pair: Sanchez + Pedro or Hazard + Walcott? Both options are similar in budget. I wanted to submit this as a scoutcast question but did not find a place to post it. Will appreciate if you guys discuss it.

For non Firmino owners he looks the best bet. His 'injury' seems very minor and is expected to make next weekend.

What about Eriksen, for those that can't afford Kane or don't want to take a hit?

For non Sigurdsson owners he'd be my pick. His price is only going one way and from GWK 15 he's basically a branch of the FPL points bank.

I already have Siggy in my team as of this week. Eriksen certainly a good option but would mean no Liverpool midfielder in my team, at least for now.

You just can't depend on Eriksen bringing in points. But if you were to take a punt on him, now would be the time with those fixtures

I had Eriksen at the start of the season, I was quite patient but in the end sold him. He's the kind of player you have to pick and then forget about because he normally ends up with 150 Pts plus at the end of the season. But for me he goes missing too often points-wise.

Direct replacements (in order of preference):

      1) Firmino
      2) Mane
      3) Siggy
      4) Alli
      5) Mata

Personally have a different plan in mind, thinking of downgrading to Zaha to upgrade striker to Kane/Costa/Giroud. May also have to downgrade Sanchez to Haz/Ozil for funds though.

Already had Siggy in for a month

Had Firmino too, didn't fancy Mane (unsure whether Liverpool will be as potent without Coutinho)

Already maxed out on Chelsea, so no Pedro.

Not enough money (without a hit) to reach Ozil...Sanchez way out of reach

So my choices were pretty much Eriksen, Alli, Walcott, Rambo or Mata

Went for Alli (cos of those 3 nice home fixtures in the next 4)

        Grant
        Holebas McAuley Williams
        Coutinho (!) Mane Sanchez Stanislas
        Austin Aguero (C) Costa (VC)

        Subs:Pickford,De Roon,Fuchs & Love

Hazard is in much better form and so are Chelsea compared to Spurs. Hazard for me. Ideally I'd have both.

Nice analysis KTK both are explosive on thier day do think Kane has the better fixtures and form for the last 2 GW's but that can change very quickly Hazard's aren't as bad either I do fancy a few away goals from him CRY & SUN

Yes can only afford one so I'm likely to bring in Kane instead of Hazard.

Who wants to bet Aguero reaches 5th YC before Costa? 🙂 He is 2 cards away and gets some silly bookings.

      Only from them?

      A, C, D, B, E......what about Matic, if you have a spare Chelsea slot?

Think I'll end up look like this, for front eight, from GW15 onwards:

    Hazard - Firmino - Siggy - Eriksen/Wally - Capoue
    Aguero - Costa - Defoe

    All bases covered?
