Young Ben Woodburn grabs the headlines as Divock Origi blinks gently on the radar, while Hull City somehow struggle through on a night of delayed drama in the EFL Cup quarter-finals. Here’s how it all (eventually) happened.

Liverpool 2 Leeds United 0

Ben Woodburn’s (4.5) record-breaking strike put a positive spin on a night that was otherwise all about what Liverpool didn’t do.

Jurgen Klopp didn’t field a host of stars, those first teamers that were risked didn’t add to the club’s growing injury list and the Reds didn’t lose despite Leeds giving as good as they got for much of the match.

Woodburn, at 17 years and 45 days, became Liverpool’s youngest every goalscorer when he fired home from a Georginio Wijnaldum (7.5) assist. The goal, on 81 minutes, sealed the deal on the night but flattered the hosts immensely.

They had allowed Leeds plenty of chances by then and had only opened the scoring five minutes earlier when Divock Origi (6.5) poked in a Trent Alexander-Arnold (4.4) cross.

The young Belgian striker seems to have hit form at just the right time. Having broken his league duck after coming on as a substitute in the weekend win over Sunderland, he could be in line for a first league start in Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth unless Daniel Sturridge (9.8) shakes off a calf problem.

Only Wijnaldum, Sadio Mane (9.2) and Emre Can (4.8) kept their places from the Sunderland match and all three look almost certain to start again at the weekend, with 19.0% of Fantasy Premier League managers also hoping Roberto Firmino (8.8) joins them.

The Brazilian wasn’t considered against Leeds as he continues to recover from a calf injury and with the parlous state of Liverpool’s midfield resources at the moment, it was perhaps surprising that Mane was risked as well.

Then again, the Senegalese international will spend much of January at the Africa Cup of Nations, so Klopp might well be getting every single penny of his money’s worth out of Mane until then.

Looking ahead, Liverpool will now play their semi-final first leg prior to Gameweek 21 which presents them with the trip to Manchester United.

Meanwhile, the second leg will fall prior to an Anfield meeting with Chelsea in Gameweek 23.

That would suggest that Klopp is unlikely to take any risks with this teamsheets for those ties, hopefully limiting the rest and rotation risk – although much will depend on the fate of the last four draw.

Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Alexander-Arnold, Lucas, Klavan, Moreno, Ejaria (Milner 82), Stewart (Woodburn 67), Can, Mané, Origi, Wijnaldum.
Subs not used: Karius, Clyne, Lovren, Henderson, Grujic.

Hull City 1 Newcastle United 1 (Hull win 3-1 on penalties aet)

There’s a strong case for Newcastle United replacing Hull City in the Premier League next season, and the visitors certainly looked like the top-flight outfit for vast swathes of this cup tie.

Mike Phelan’s men were out-shot 32-12 (although that figure included penalties) and had to make do with just 39% possession on a night when a sparse crowd had to wait a long time for anything to actually happen.

Eighty-nine minutes to be precise, as it was then that Dieumerci Mbokani (5.5) was sent off for an attempted headbutt.

The Congolese striker, who will now miss Hull’s next three league matches, was one of just five players retained from the team that drew with West Brom. Among them was Robert Snodgrass (5.6) who, with 5.1% ownership, is the side’s most popular outfield asset among FPL managers.

He equalised for the hosts in extra time from a Markus Henriksen (5.1) rebound before second-choice keeper Eldin Jakupovic (4.0), without a league start since Gameweek 5 but still found in 19.1% of squads, saved two penalties as Newcastle collapsed in the shoot-out.

Hull have now made the EFL Cup semi-finals for the first time in their history. They are considerably more familiar with relegation and this performance, if not the result, was another reminder of why.

They will face a first leg semi-final prior to the Gameweek 21 league encounter with Bournemouth, with the second leg falling prior to a trip to Manchester United in Gameweek 23.

In the short-term, Phelan must take his side to visit a confident Middlesbrough side with woefully limited options in attack. With Mbokani suspended and both Abel Hernandez (£5.5m) and Will Keane (£4.5m) sidelined through injury, the Tigers boss seems limited to Adama Diomande (£4.6m) as an option.

The smart money has to be on a Boro clean sheet in Gameweek 14.

Hull City XI: Jakupovic, Elmohamady (Weir 79), Maguire, Dawson, Robertson (Tymon 79), Huddlestone, Livermore (Henriksen 79), Meyler, Snodgrass, Mbokani, Diomande.
Subs not used: Davies, Marshall, Bowen, Olley.

Only uncertainty is perhaps Lovren/Alonso. Reckon Bournemouth will score against Pool and the way city played last week Chelsea may well pull a cleanie and Alonso more chance of assists.

With Chelsea very good upcomming fixtures in mind .
Surely these bottom of the table teams will be parking the bus so Moses and Alonso are going to be more wingers than defenders
    Pushing right forward

I'm talking myself old enough more so into getting Moses

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

How Does Club Loyalty Influence Your Fantasy Football Decisions

Are you a fan of a Premier League side, either current or past and has that influenced your transfer and captaincy decisions.

Any examples where youve done well or disastrously by picking from your team or shunning those from a rivals'?

Andy G in our moderators and contributors league is perhaps the best example of this I can think of where his allegiance to Leicester last season saw him have a great from the off, captaining Mahrez while he was barely in anyone's side.

Another example from among our ranks is ManU fan Andy85wsm, who backed Ibrahimovic to great effect in GWK 13 with the armband.

Andy's devotion to Ibra is admirable really; I just don't see it myself. Man U's attacking form is so dire- they don't batter anyone in the same way Arsenal, Chelsea, City, Liverpool are capable of doing so you're always looking at 1 or 2 goals max- and that's if they do actually manage to score.

3 goals in 2 games now with some good ones to come 🙂

The stats have been there all season, it's the conversion letting Ibra and the rest of the team down unfortunately.

Being a Manc ex-pat living in Brighton, I really hope they do go up this season. Houghton's doing a fine job and he has the fans buzzing (mostly)

But back to the question at hand.

Admittedly, Aguero is the first name on the teamsheet, but beyond that I have no loyalty when it comes to fantasy picks.

However, I also have a golden a rule of real football always comes before fantasy, meaning that while I have 3 Chelsea players in my team, and they will be in my 1st team this Saturday, i'll happily take each scoring two points if it means a City win

if i have a player on the opposing team and they score and we lose. of course i wont be happy at the result but i will be happy to take the points on fantasy.

      fantasy shouldnt split your loyalties.

its like saying i would never play as tottenham on fifa or i would never have a player in the FIFA ultimate team because of the team they play for. if it works for me in the context im playing in then its fine

Having no premiership club loyalty makes things easier when picking players, though I am prone to wanting big teams to score heavily against the underdogs based on who I have in the team which is normally not what I'm about. On a side note, I will never do well at sky super 6, as I always give clean sheets to the teams I have defenders for...I'm all or nothing.

As a Man Utd fan, I remember the good old days where I could pick 3 United players and have a policy of no Liverpool or City players, and still have great success! What made it better was that my mate and main rival had a policy of no United players- which meant no Ronaldo!

Like Andy, I'm a utd fan and had no utd player in my team for ages and have to say it made watching the games a bit more bearable.
But I couldn't resist bringing Ibra(C) in for Lukaku last week and he's staying in my team for the next while. He's back scoring, on pens and is the focal point. Also, have a look at the amount of shots utd have had in their last 5 or 6 games so it's not as if chances are not being created! Goals galore for Xmas 🙂

Forest fan here (just like Mark) so there hasn't been much direct effect on the FPL game for me. However, for a few of the players we've sold to Premier League clubs, I've known a little about them and whether they'd make good investments. This means I was ready to jump on the Antonio train last season as soon as we could see he would get regular starts - he's such a direct player that if he plays, he gets goals. However, most of the time, knowing about Michael Dawson, Karl Darlow, etc. doesn't really make much of a difference.

It did make it even more enjoyable last time Derby were up and backing anyone playing them brought a fantasy reward and a real life reward!

I generally try to bring in a player from the opposing team to have some insurance incase Arsenal drops points or they have a "worldie". A lethal combination this season has been me owning an Arsenal player and captaining him but I have caught onto that now.

Walcott's 4 game barren run coincided exactly with the time he spent in my FPL team. Every time I gave Alexis the armband (GW 2,4,7,8,9) he has blanked except GW10. So both have gone out in the last few weeks (Alexis GW11 and Wally GW13) for the sake of Arsenal being better on the pitch.

I still need some Arsenal coverage so Ozil is my pick for now and hopefully he breaks this rut as in the past seasons I generally have a minimum of 2 but mostly 3 like playing with 3 Arsenal Players.

i'm a liverpool fan, so i normally have 2 liverpool players in my team, and i hate utd so i normally avoid their players (why are utd players always over priced? never any value in utd players which is another reason to avoid utd players)

As a Watford fan (Obvious I know given username) I have kept Deeney longer than I should have and captained him against Hull.
Had Capoue from the beginning before selling him for a profit, only once got any points from him as benched as 1st sub every week. Now have Holebas who will keep but missed out on his early points.

Wouldn't normally captain anyone against us but feared the worst at Liverpool so captained Coutinho which lessened the blow of the heavy defeat.

Deeney now replaced with Kane having downgraded Coutinho after his injury.

I would often captain players who I thought would score against my team (Newcastle). I looked at it as a win-win, if they scored then I got points, if I didn't get points then it meant they hadn't scored. Sadly, that option is dead to me this season!

Can Coutinho continue to drop this GW? The rules state players can fall "up to 0.1 per day" so suggesting he can exceed the 0.3 in a GW!?

      Just 0.3.

Crazy that has already happened. The market is very cruel this season. I hope they change it to slow it down at least.

Thanks both - thought I'd never seen >0.3 drop, but the speed of his decline is amazing. As you say Jonty, it needs re-calibrating. Love your work btw - listening to the scoutcast right now and torn between Fer, Matic and Can as cheap enablers in for Coutinho and allowing Benteke to Kane in a couple of GWs...

Thing about Matic is that you may want three other Chelsea players like Haz, Costa and Alonso.

I think all three are great as a fifth mid....but I wouldn't want to play them every week as a fourth.

As a fifth Can is the cheapest - good underlying stats too.

Good to see another Benteke owner. I'm keeping for Hull (gwk 15).

Agree about Chelsea x 3 - Can is the frontrunner, but having taken the 0.3 fall for Coutinho (back to price I paid) I'm tempted to hold him until Saturday. Might even keep the transfer, but lacking a clear captain choice. Thinking about Aguero - Kane, to secure clear captain - or is that madness!? https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/team/25622/event/13

I've ditched Aguero but I'm not sure I'd recommend it. I did it when I felt reckless. Feeling more sensible now. Looking to get him back GWK 15 or 18 maybe.

0.3 for the most owned player out injured is fine. Plenty of good alternatives as well.
The 0.3 Hazard drop was something else. Herd mentality, not injured, slight dip in form

So fast though! I've lost most of my team 'profit' value from strikers being shipped out (Zlatan's fall for instance). Rises seem so slow by comparison, especially with affordable differentials that come good.

£6.5m is a fair price I think. If you price him lower than that then he becomes an obvious pick as soon as injuries force him to come into the side.

well I suppose it is fair! its just when you know he is third choice (and has been for a while) it seems pricey...will be keeping an eye out for sure, i have rondon, could be a straight swap, will see how they do

But at the point you want to bring him in he'll be first choice (otherwise you wouldn't be bringing him in). At that point it's £6.5m for a Liverpool attacker which seems like good value
