It was always going to be a big ask.

With 37 points in his previous two Gameweeks, Alexis Sanchez had constructed a culture of fear amongst his non-owners, urging more than 380,000 to doubtless spend transfer points to move swiftly and capture his services.

Such explosive returns built expectation and paranoia in equal measure. It was a risk to overlook Sanchez and, having been burned by sacrificing his services after Gameweek 11, I was not in the frame of mind to gamble again.

I was not alone.

Sanchez topped our captain poll and was duly skippered by 17.3% of managers today – just 11,000 shy of Chelsea’s Diego Costa who proved the most popular pick of Gameweek 15.

Of course, we could have perhaps anticipated a significant regression in his output.

Stoke City arrived in north London having conceded just three goals in their previous seven Premier League outings. The underlying statistics backed them to frustrate the Gunners and perhaps stifle the threat of Sanchez.

To an extent they succeeded, although eventually the Potters caved in to goals from Arsenal’s other midfield threats – Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott.

That offered a reminder of Arsenal’s attacking promise and that, while Sanchez clearly has to be considered as the key force, neither Ozil nor Walcott can be totally overlooked.

The latter, in particular, continues to produce numbers that outperform his initial 7.5 price tag, or even his current 8.0 valuation.

Walcott still boasts more shots in the box and shots on target than Sanchez. We may suffer the frustration of rotation on occasions, but, barring Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, it’s difficult to find a midfielder in his bracket that can compete with the potential suggested by such numbers.

Sanchez is convincing, but we shouldn’t be blinkered to the promise elsewhere in Arsene Wenger’s midfield.

Appearing dejected when withdrawn by Wenger – Sanchez is currently showing real hunger and ambition in his play. For now, we will take the assist for Alex Iwobi’s third goal and look to Wednesday night’s visit to Goodison for a bigger return.

Tomorrow, the aforementioned Costa, along with Eden Hazard, backed by 17.5% and 9.4% with the armband respectively, will attempt to deal damage to the stubborn West Brom defence.

Significantly outscore Sanchez and it will create further doubt on the Gameweek 16 armband, with Chelsea at Sunderland and Spurs and Harry Kane welcoming Hull City to White Hart Lane.

Sanchez is just one key player embroiled in a fascinating phase of our season. The merry-go-round of in-form heavy-hitters took a major twist with the Sanchez Gameweek 14 haul.

Overlook him as our captain or, worse still, in our squads, and we will always live in fear of a repeat. Today’s modest return doesn’t change that: Sanchez can explode points at any time, perhaps against any opposition.

But it remains to be seen if the confidence in the Chilean as a captain remains strong should his big rivals deliver on Sunday.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Barring injures, do u think this is a good trade for a minus 4 for 2 GWs?

Defoe and Allen -> anichebe and Alli?

    The former would mean playing:
GW15: Allen, GW16: Defoe while the swap would mean Alli playing both GW15 n 16 while anichebe stays on the bench.

Think I can make up the -4 difference?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    In defence of Bournemouth

With four clean sheets the Cherries are joint fourth in terms of shut outs this season, with only Chelsea, Tottenham and Southampton able to keep teams at bay at a better rate.

In addition, the Dorset side’s style of play seems to still benefit defenders via attacking returns.

This season there have regularly been two Bournemouth centre backs or full backs in the top ten FPL defenders list in terms of overall points.

Cook and Daniels are currently there, but Francis, Ake and Smith have also been chipping in with attacking returns. With Ake and Smith able to play in midfield the game now has five defenders worth our attention.

Between them the above defenders have mustered seven goals and five assists.

I’ve been asked a few times on Twitter recently to recommend a good budget defender. Boro’s assets are among those I mention, but also Bournemouth’s.

Yet most Bournemouth defenders are still very low owned.

    Daniels (5.0) 5.6%
    Cook (5.1) 3.5%
    Ake (4.3) 3.4%
    Francis (4.6) 2.8%
Only the 4.8 priced Adam Smith (10.9%) has an ownership of more than 10%

The reason I thought I’d write this now is that over the next two games the Cherries have a couple of great chances of shut outs and attacking points (LEI*, SOU).

Chelsea and Arsenal then follow in the next three….but with January featuring away trips to Swansea and Hull and home ties against Watford and Palace I think Cherries defenders are being woefully overlooked.

For me Daniels is the pick of the bunch with two goals, an assist and more chances created than any other Bou defender. He is also on penalties when Wilson is not on the pitch.

Cook runs him a close second. He lacks assist potential, but tops the Bou defender table for shots in the box.

Ake's versatility makes him another great shout. Two goals already and cheap as chips.

Smith is your assist man – he has three already. Plus he was fielded in midfield v Burnley.

Francis also does well in terms of chance creation and has an assist to his name already. His underlying chance creation stats indicate he is assist imminent too.

Are you tempted by a Cherry in defence? If so which one?

Ake just for his price, in the 5.0 bracket, Brunt is my go to, wanted him in since his comeback but have always had bigger things to adjust then transfer Williams out.

I think he looks great too, especially if accomodated in midfield.

FInd it so odd how Bournemouth defenders seem to do so well in terms of attacking threat. Must be part of their training.

They rotate well as well. I've had Daniels for ages and only bench him in tough games. Have found that one of Holebas or Evans are more than able to deputise.

Those Lei and Sou home games look great for defenders. January looks brilliant too for those wildcarding then and looking for cheap options.

the WBA rotation is particularly good. Evans has helped out for me in Daniels absence.

Of Bournemouth's fixtures from now until the end of January I can only see me benching Daniels twice (Che, Ars)...but even v Arsenal I'd be tempted to play him.

Good post, these are the players it's easy to forget when you're busy swapping Sanchez in and out.

I have little invested in defence so for me it would have to be Ake. Might make the swap from Pieters at some stage.

That's why I wrote it. In the excitement over Sanchez there are some key things going on in Fantasy Football that are being overlooked that can have a good effect on the rest of your side. Investment in a scoring 4.3 defender is one of them, as is the threat of those other Bou defenders.

By the end of the week I will have Toby in for Williams and probably Alonso for Koscielny. Just leaves me Stones to sort then - he's useless! A Bournemouth defender is a consideration although Barragan at 4.5 would sit nicely next to Evans

      Foster/Heaton
      Toby Alonso Evans/Barragan/Amat ??

I got Ake last week as part of a wildcard. Between Amat and Ake, it seemed a relatively straight-forward decision. Was glad to see Ake retaining his starting berth with Daniels returning, although an Amat clean sheet suggests the decision was not so straight-forward after all.

Regarding Boro, I have Hull's Dawson now on the bench and looking to swap him for Friend in a few weeks.

I see Amat as bench fodder. I don't have a high team value so am looking at a defence of:

        Grant - Pickford
        Ake - Barragan - Alonso - McAuley - Amat

I'm surprised with you jonty, the amount of times I see you use the phrase "underlying stats" yet you are promoting one of the worst defences in the league as options without looking at the stats.

      Big chances conceded top 5:

      Swansea 40
      West ham 34
      Hull 33
      Bournemouth 31
      Crystal palace 29

      Bottom 5

      Chelsea 10
      Tottenham 14
      Southampton 14
      Man utd 14
      Middlesbrough 17

Bottom 5 teams all good defences top 5 worst defences in the league imo.

Bournemouth have been very fortunate to get the cs they have as their defence is terrible and unless it improves I can see a lot of regression.

Walcott has been getting outperformed by a plethora of midfielders over last 5 GWs. 2 goals is not a good return for 8M. Better options available.

Just catching up on MOTD, Sanchez owners very lucky with that assist. Was very anonymous the whole game. Walcott on the other hand, striker position lots!

Persuaded me to hang on to Walcott for a bit anyway.

      Cue Sanchez haul next week.

      1. Worzel Gummidge
          9 years, 7 days ago

I am sure his owners would prefer his multiple digit hauls over Walcotts 2 goals over 5 GWs but if you are looking for justification then so be it. The assist was an assist. That is how assists work so nothing luckt about it. Can people not just keep Walcott without trying to justify it using Sanchez. Sanchez is by far a better pick and there are better options compared to Walcott.

It was a bit lucky, as was Joe Allen's 'assist'

Obviously Sanchez is going to outscore Walcott, just about weighing up can the spare cash of having Walcott over Sanchez make up for that difference.

I was looking for justification as a Walcott owner, but I wasn't trying to provoke an argument, just an observation.

Walcott has just dropped in price, people sometimes base their decisions on price drops.

Just getting it out there is still dangerous.

There isn't THAT many better options than Walcott tbf in his piece bracket, he's only behind Sanchez and Hazard pointswise.

Got to agree, Walcott is fab cover for Arsenal.
The spare cash allows a huge upgrade elsewhere in the team.

Do you think it would be stupid to get rid of Kosc at this stage? Bought for 6.1 now 6.6.... yeah he has 2 tough fixtures but those games after that are as good as it gets!

Not to mention mustafi out means there is very little chance of rotation over the festive period

Contemplating getting rid for VVD/Cedric. Sure the fixtures improve, but you can get cheaper clean sheets elsewhere (or none at all) and it's the difference between having Alli or Eriksen over Son.

        He's 6.1m and hasn't had a cleansheet in about 7 games.

However, can't see where I could make room and budget tight with 0.1ITB? With already owning: Evans Amat Alonso Cedric Holebas

Similar defence. Evans to Ake/Friend is your play. Maybe look at removing Holebas (I have him) for the other. That is my plan once their fixtures clear.

Hey WG, out the 5 I was thinking Evans the weakest link. Hard to see Holebas after 2assists and Bps yesterday, Amat looked great too, Alonso staying indefinitely and I've only recently got Cedric in.

Evans hadn't done much of late, but did get the points from his goal. So not sure whether to keep, or sell while I can

Alonso/Cedric are there for the long haul with those fixtures. Amat is the ideal 5th def so he needs to stay. Leaves Evans/Holebas to move on.

Yeap, I agree. Though West Brom have one of the best defences and Holebas getting points. Think I need to admit that there's no room for a Cherry but a change in my back line's form, and they'll be straight in

Morning all. Decent start with Zaha and Amat yesterday. Any thoughts on next week? Will maybe do Firmino to Siggy for next weekend if he blanks today. £1.1 ITB, used my FT to rid myself of Williams.

Delighted to have gargutron back but it does make for some depressing reading.
Just 37% of potential captaincy score achieved. Shame.
