The Pre-Match Preamble - Gameweek 38 Preamble

You can forget the season of goodwill. This, like every Christmas programme, promises to be a punishing affair on the anxiety levels of the passionate Fantasy manager as much as the sinews of the Premier League footballer. We should prepare ourselves for twists and turns; some freakish points hauls, a slew of cruel injuries and unforeseen rotation.

Some will get lucky – probably the guy you’re chasing in the mini-league. At that point, we need to cut the bleating – we’ll have to roll with it and come out the other side having resisted the temptation to chase points, or “knee jerk†proven quality out of our squads. Fight the urges, there are fixtures to come in the New Year.

The nightmares could even come before Christmas. Sir Alex may just go for the experience of Ryan Giggs and the industry of Ji-Sung Park to counter the usual verve shown by Fulham in Wednesday’s Craven Cottage meeting. Roberto Mancini has declared he will make changes for the visit of Stoke – we can only speculate what he has planned to counter the Potters style, or indeed, who he will sacrifice in order to cope with their physicality.

Will Gareth Bale shake off his ankle to face Chelsea? Will players like Ledley King, Rafael Van der Vaart and Demba Ba – individuals cursed by recurrent injury problems – be able to cope with the fixture pile-up?

Then there’s the added confusion of the effects of the impending Tube strikes on the London fixtures – will our gameweek suffer? We should asses the players at risk – and consider saving transfers until we know more so we can counter the issue. With possible Boxing Day absentees, now is not the time to indulge in a “vanity transferâ€.

We shouldn’t bottle our wrath for after these events. Ideally, we need to prepare for frustration and have a bench in place to absorb it. If you sitting on Ritchie De Laet or Shane Ferguson, it could be time to prioritise their exit. Now, more than ever, we need a bench lined with active players – willing to contribute and at least offer the prospect of a few points.

So, yeah, enjoy the Bond Film, The Two Ronnies and the awkward gift swapping. Just don’t bank on too many pressies from a Fantasy Football perspective – we’re all set to enjoy “restless†rather than “silent†nights.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    No offense to Gooners here but I kinda hope RVP gets injured for a while. In terms of Fantasy football he's just a £13m blocker at this stage. Would make things a little interesting if the likes of he and Silva picked up an injury.

          If RVP got an injury tonight that ruled him out of the rest of the season, where would Arsenal finish at end of season?

          My guess would be 8th.

    Who do I bring in for the next 2-3 weeks:

    2) Theo Walcott
    3) Drenthe

      Of those, Adam. I wouldn't get rid though. Even if he misses Chelsea he was never likely to scre big that match anyway and the following 3 GWs are tasty. If you're worried about losing value then that'll shoot right back up before the double gw.

        Mids: Bale, Silva, Nani, Ramsey (Drenthe)

        I'm worried about Swansea's CS ability at home but the question is are you a risk taker? If so then go with Drenthe who seems to have a much, much bigger upside points-wise.

        Defenders: Kompany, Enrique, Jones

        Bench: Drenthe, Simpson, Wilkinson

    I'm right up together but losing patience with Ramsey. Shall I swap for Drenthe now, or wait till next game week? Le Arse at Villa who are poor so Ramsey could come good? Got two freebies and nothing else to do - Ramsey is the only player I'm not happy with.

    Thoughts? I'm leaning towards sticking for one more week just to see how they fare. But then Ramsey is home to Wolves when Drenthe is away to Sunderland lol!

          Up to you. I'd rather have all my players in with a good chance of playing at this time of year. I'd imagine R Taylor and Bale will play but with so many games in such a short period, who knows. If they don't that leaves you needing one more player out to start with 10.

    Westwood (Ruddy)
    Jones Enrique Jags (Simpson Brown)

      Slight injury I think. What does it say on injuries and bans here, or the team news?

    Rambo + Smalling > Verminator + Moses

    I keep keeping hold of Rambo convincing myself he will come good as soon as I drop him - is now the time to finally cut my losses.

    From Tony Barrett, Merseyside correspondent for The Times, via Twitter:

    "For those asking - there's still no news on the Suarez/Evra case."

    Everyone getting rid of Sturridge now? I have Sturridge - RVP - Suarez

    I've had the same forwards for a while now & reluctant to change as they're a differential to the others. Most seem to have Rooney/RVP with Ba & Adebayor

      Jones away for Fulham every day of the week.United have been doing well to keep clean sheets recently in the PL and Jones is a goal threat

      Tough calls this week. I would give it to Silva, if I knew he was starting, too much danger he'll get twenty minutes when the game is all but over.

    For GW18, I'm thinking that Rooney will run amok against Wigan. What do you think of these transfers?

    Nani -> Etherington
    Adebayor -> Rooney

      Look at the Spurs fixtures... You don't want to sell Ade now. Hold on to him until the Jan WC then bring in Rooney. Thats my plan 🙂

          I've fallen apart in the Wigan league, and most others. Never mind it's a long season. Plenty of time to collapse completely. 😀

            Just noticed that, it's a tough league me thinks. I reckoned my team was looking just dandy and now it's going pear-shaped. It's a funny old game.
