Suspensions

The FA have this evening confirmed Luis Suarez has been found guilty of racial misconduct towards Patrice Evra and have handed the Liverpool forward an eight-match ban and a fine of £40,000, pending appeal.

The Independent Regulatory Commission announced the decision as follows:
1. Mr Suarez used insulting words towards Mr Evra during the match contrary to FA Rule E3(1);
2. the insulting words used by Mr Suarez included a reference to Mr Evra’s colour within the meaning of Rule E3(2);
3. Mr Suarez shall be warned as to his future conduct, be suspended for eight matches covering all first team competitive matches and fined the sum of £40,000;
4. the [penalty] is suspended pending the outcome of any appeal lodged by Mr Suarez against this decision.

The fourth point here is crucial- the Merseyside club have 14 days in which to contest the decision, which means that Suarez is available for selection over the next fortnight. The length of time until appeal takes in four Premier League games- (wig, BLA, NEW, mcy) – and with Kenny Dalglish’s side struggling for goals right now, there’s every chance that, for as long as the club feel he is in the right frame of mind, Suarez will take part in these games.

Liverpool have since released a strongly worded statement this evening and it’s pretty obvious, upon reading, that not only are they firmly behind their player, they will also be appealing this decision. The following excerpt sums up their thoughts:

It seems incredible to us that a player of mixed heritage should be accused and found guilty in the way he has based on the evidence presented. We do not recognise the way in which Luis Suarez has been characterised. Nothing we have heard in the course of the hearing has changed our view that Luis Suarez is innocent of the charges brought against him and we will provide Luis with whatever support he now needs to clear his name.

With the suspension on hold until after the outcome of any appeal, then, it’s impossible to speculate what games Suarez could potentially miss. Given that the FA have taken two months to reach this decision, it’s fair to say the likely appeal won’t be rapidly resolved.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      People like my minileague leader transfer top players in and out, taking hits but keeping with the price rises. Seems to work and looks like a lot of fun... if you are winning. He took out Sturridge this week and I guess will buy in Tott and Ev in the next week or so.

        I don't think it would, and the reason for that is that neither of those groups of people have had to endure similar abuse that black people had.

        So how are your feelings for the future SD? I still think you have a fair chance to avoid relegation, but something to calm the turmoil surrounding the players will have to be done. I'm not surprised that it's impossible for them to work in the middle of all that.

Calling colord people the N* word today is therefor offcourse an racist insult. I know you know this, but I think your comment is stupid.

        Those would be nationalities...

        If you called Dempsey or Dunne a 'cra*ker' that would be a racial epithet. Lets not be daft, as an African American, I wouldn't consider "negrito" as racist, I'd consider it racially insensitive, and in the right place I'd probably whoop his little ass. I like Evra as a player but there is no 'winning' from his perspective. Obviously he did it to play on a level of ignorance of what the word means in other parts of the world. And it's par for the course for how the bucked tooth bastard plays ball. He got what he deserved, and part of me thinks if he would have just stfu and stop the diving from day one he would have had better results for himself.

        so you call my reason shit - do that mean I get offended by it ? no. it's just words and your way of expressing yourself. I dont suggest we ignore racism, but 8 weeks & 40k is over the top. There's less fines for serious injuries from bad tackles - a players career can be ruined. so a bit of perspective.

          It is indeed just words and my way of expressing yourself, but the way of expressing himself Suarez chose isn't acceptable to me.

          If the point of your original post was that the punishment was too hard I missed it, looked more to me as if you had a go at Evra for not just saying quiet because he's paid a lot.

          It's not just words it's probably the ugliest racial slur ever created. It is a word known primarily as a means to denigrate black people and it's such a powerful way to represent overt racial hatred.
          I don't think the FA is saying Suarez is a racist, but using racist language is a criminal offence under the race relations act and should be treated like that whether it occurs on a Saturday night down the local pub or on the football field.

            I think to know that it's the ugliest racial slur ever created you really need to grow up in England. I'm sure a person who hardly speaks English and grew up in another country has no idea what an ugly racial slur is and what is not. People who are superficially acqainted with British/American history and culture definitely don't feel this border.
            I'm personally rather shocked that most people on here don't dare even to type the word and prefer to refer to it as the 'N' word. You hear it in so many movies and songs that it's really hard to believe what a big deal it is.

      There'll always be some sort of 'racism' in football. Im not saying its right but when two players like Evra and Suarez are heated up, words are bound to be exchanged, still doesn't make it right. Then there's the whole anthropological problem of whether "race" even exists...

    Lots of winking between players at the end so it was clearly fixed right?

    Seriously, I feel sorry for Kean who surely now (rightly) faces the inevitable chop, but not happy with the abuse during the game, the point can be as well made after the game without having the effect on the players that it must have. I wouldn't wish that personal abuse on anyone. You can't blame him for taking the job or for holding out for the sack rather than resigning, the blame for everything lies with Venkys. Kean is clearly a mouthpiece, a puppet, putting positive spin on everything. Yes, we have have had our injuries and bad decisions but so have most other teams. I won't be sorry to see Kean go as long as Venky's follow him by selling at the earliest opportunity! 🙁

      It was pretty much the same kind of abuse (except better organized chants) by the Athletico Madrid fans. They actually chanted names of coaches they wanted in there as well as cursing the president of the club. Of course today they didn't get the coach they wanted (looks like they'll get Diego Simeone).

      Venkys will stay unfortunately. You should blame the previous owners for selling to people who dont care about the club. Their only really bad move was sacking Allardyce IMO.

      Kean doesnt help matters though. Salgado for instance has clearly been a weak link all season but he keeps playing (ok not for a few games). Olsson is so much better.

      I'm glad we aren't bottom at christmas and I'm genuinely sorry that you guys are. I was really hoping Wigan would go down this year,

      No one knows for sure. Wilkinson was Pulis' preferred RB during a nice run of clean sheets earlier but is injured. Then Huth did the job for 2-3 games very well. We should know more when Wilkinson is fit. He's definitely not "nailed on," by any means.

    Getting away from Suarez for a minute, I have 0 from 0 with 11 to play including my captain.

    Is that a good score tonight? 🙂

    Barcelona pay initial instalment to seal Neymar deal, no stopping them for next few years. This is oine of the greatest goals I've ever seen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bze1tqF7sio

          Yes but it really depends who you'd be buying/selling.

          For no hit and keeping RVP I'd get him ahead of Nani.

    In light of Suarez' racism/idiocy:

    Mata --> Etherington, and
    Yak --> Bellamy

    Both freebs, wise or unwise?

      Getting rid of Yak for Bellamy is clearly a racist transfer. String him up.

      Hoping he won't, but thinking he might. Had a look at FISO and seems he's 5572 transfers away from a price rise.

      "We find it extraordinary that Luis can be found guilty on the word of Patrice Evra alone when no-one else on the field of play - including Evra's own Manchester United teammates and all the match officials - heard the alleged conversation between the two players in a crowded Kop goalmouth while a corner kick was about to be taken."

      Interesting considering Suarez had a chance to deny saying it, but he didn't. Instead he made up that crappy excuse that 'all his teammates call him that.' I find it fascinating that Liverpool is trying to act like he said nothing, when even Suarez himself is admitting he said it.

      I think it's right that the club supports Suarez, but that is not what they're doing here. What they're doing right now is just making them and him look extra stupid, with that statement on the homepage.

        here here. That statement is completely idiotic. They are just completely ignoring that Suarez already admitted he said it, and was, even worse, trying to justify it.

      What he was trying to say is:

      We accept the charge and wish to apologise to Patrice Evra for the awful, degrading insults that Ratty McDiveCheat (as we call him here at LFC) threw at him. In respect to the footballing community, and for the good of society in general, i'm off to put my head in the oven, best wishes KD.
