Sergio Aguero continues to create drama.

Today’s first act was an early afternoon bombshell from Manchester which sent shockwaves as Pep Guardiola’s teamsheet hit home.

Then, as the clock struck four, the second act followed: enter Aguero stage left to revive a ten-man City with a finish of sublime quality.

The full performance, spanning three hours, with Pep directing and Aguero as the dashing leading man, summed up our season so far with the Argentine.

It seems the days when Aguero settled in our squads and quietly went about the business of saving our Gameweeks are long gone.

Now the striker seems to insist on seeking the headlines and, just when we begin to settle on the idea of Aguero returning to his familiar groove, Pep intervenes with his own unpredictable flashes.

Some may have anticipated a benched Aguero against Burnley but I was certainly not among them.

Foolishly attempting to play “second guess Pep”, I presumed that he had earmarked the visit of the Clarets as an opportunity to ease Aguero back into goalscoring form.

Instead, according to his post-match comments, he looked to protect his striker from exertion following his unconvincing run-out at Anfield.

“He played 90 minutes after four games out and I did not consider him playing 90 minutes again after two days.”

That seems plausible but why start him on the bench rather than use him to get in front and then hook him early?

Match fitness is surely the issue, and, with a rest in the FA Cup tie next weekend on the cards, why not allow Aguero to regain that sharpness with a start?

Such questions and arguments fall on deaf ears: Pep doesn’t answer to me, other Fantasy managers and perhaps not even to the City fans. Judging by his post-match interview, he barely answers to journalists.

We know he plays by his own rules and that those rules are so often hideously difficult to decipher.

By the end of act two, Aguero had delivered. A seven point return isn’t perhaps a cause for celebration for the 135,000 who transferred him in, or indeed the 11% who gave him the armband. But it came as a huge relief given the reaction at 2pm.

However, do today’s events add to the doubts and concerns surrounding Peps approach to Aguero?

Given that City’s Champions League campaign will accelerate again in February and, by that time, they may even be cast adrift in the title race, will Pep’s attitude to Aguero’s pitch time hinder the striker’s potential further?

There is also another factor.

Gabriel Jesus is now a Manchester City player. A precocious talent, Pep has made it clear that he is about to become another option.

“Now Gabriel Jesus is coming so we will have of course three strikers who can sense a goal.”

This won’t help matters.

We had doubts already but Pep’s approach and teamsheet for Burnley’s visit to the Etihad, just day’s after losing ground following the defeat to Liverpool, has perhaps compounded matters.

Following two acts of ill-discipline, we’re not sure if we can trust Aguero. We’re also not sure if Pep can be trusted to get him on the pitch in the first place.

Aguero had the final say with another reminder of his brilliance. We know the quality he brings but are we willing to risk the hefty fee to buy into the circus that comes with it?

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Hello, guys, what to do with this team?

      Plan was -4:

      2) Grabban to Costa
      3) Siggy to Clayton

Mane to Coutinho and Grabban upgrade (e.g Defoe). Wait for injury news on Coutinho as Lallana and Firmino are options too.

I dont mind it; I think Siggy has to come out because of upcoming fixtures - and it seems rather rare that you have neither Hazard nor Costa. I'd look at downgrading Mane perhaps to a cheaper option (Lallana?) to free up some more funds.

Sanchez could easily be on the bench tonight. Not scaremongering too much (Also irrelevant now if you have him in your team), looked tired towards the end of the Palace game. VC ibra here so could be worse but I wouldn't be surprised.

They'll be itching to punish Liverpool for their slip up. Can't see Wenger being as stupid as Pep especially considering Wally is carrying an injury and Alexis is immune to fatigue. Aguero's rest was far more guessable.

Did anybody here not use their WC for the dgw and still have a decent dgw score and season finish?

Just wondering as seems people here seem dead cert using WC and BB/TC is only way to go.

Would be interesting to get a few peoples opinion who got a good rank last season but didn't play the WC and chip for the dgw.

It's not just the week you use the TC in the double that you need to consider. There will potentially be blanks either side and a wildcard helps you handle that a bit easier.

Ultimately it will be difficult to judge completely because even if you go up the ranks with an early wildcard there's nothing to say it wouldn't have happened anyway and vice versa.

My ML rival didn't WC the week before but TC'd Sanchez. A nice little 75 points for him. That basically negated the effects of my WC and Bench Boost.

      • 10 Years

If needed to save a few -4s, it's worth it IMO. When the DGWs arrive, you'll probably have already transferred in a raft of DGW players in advance, and even if you haven't, you can take hits against SGW players at a cost of effectively only -2.

Moreover, I anticipate my team being very close to the template wildcard team anyway, but the time we get there, bar having a bench of lame players who will simply get 90 minutes but offer very little of anything good.

Yeh see way I am thinking is playing the WC earlier and taking advantage of fixtures and planning for dgw players can be done. Maybe a -4 or -8 will be needed but as you say effectively that's -2 or -4 and the points you accumulated through the WC will make up for that anyway.

i didnt use mine foe dgws and got triple figure hauls in the first dgw. i just prepared 4 gw before and took a minus 8 so in total i had 6 transfers which was essentially a wild card, and the -8's easily covered by a 100+ score.. Andy is right though, it was hard to get a good turn of fixtures for the second dgw as you dont have weeks to prepare.. but i still did alright, by luck.

I thought this article was pretty good:
      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/12/29/winter-wildcard-strategies-2/

I WCd early last year and then spent the subsequent weeks scrambling to make transfers not for the benefit of my team week to weke - but rather to set up for the DGWs. I think it is something to consider - is that if you did WC early, you will lose weeks making transfers to set up rather than scoring points week on week.

Just don't WC yet unless your current team is a complete disaster - FPL is all about keeping your options open, and it is going to be a very long, difficult second half of the season if you blow your WC now and your WC team fails.

one of the factors last year were the top 2 sides (Leicester & Spurs) didn't have DGW in GW34. A lot of sides had 6 players from those sides scoring pts all the way up to the DGW,
From memory Alli & Kane had big returns in their one game but had been transferred out for all sorts of punts who had 2 games.
Lot of value was lost overall as it was difficult time-wise and price-wise to get them back in.
At least you have to look at what people did GW33-35 rather than just the DGW. A lot of people sold Vardy & Toby (me inc.) under GW33 WC and immediately lost to double figure returns.

Sure. But I think your going to have a heap of money on the bench each week. Costa/Alonso combined are 17.2mil. What you end up with are a lot of guys in the mid price bracket who tend to be inconsistent and more difficult to predict. Going crazy over this - as a result of the uncertainty over Aguero and unfortunately having Siggy in my side. Desperately don't want to WC.

    Heaton - Pickford
    Azpi - Evans - Pieters - Holgate - Amat
    Sanchez - Hazard - Siggy - Phillips - Allen
    Aguero - Ibra - Anichebe

    0.1 ITB.
    Rank 427k.

Wants: get rid of Siggy, get Benteke in (fixtures!), get Brunt (though might be too late).

Not sure how I can get it done without a mass restructure of team, requiring a wildcard. Just seems too many holes (4th def, 5th mid esp.). Any thoughts at all?

Set priorities, no need to rush transfers imo. I'd start with siggy and try to upgrade Holegate. Aguero should come good regardless (hopefully).

Thanks 🙂 I guess my problems is freeing up funds to replace Siggy with someone decent (given I already have Phillips) as well as Holegate (who I was hoping would get more time under Koeman after he started a game, but oh well).

Freeing up funds means downgrading either Haz or Aguero - which means taking a hit to change Siggy. Or is there someone I am missing who would be a straight swap for Siggy?

I have both Sanchez and Hazard.

Giroud is still a massive differential, with 3 plum fixtures, but that comes with some uncertainty.

    Thoughts?

Doesn't have the consistency of Costa or the fixtures of Giroud, (also has Hull at home after Chelsea away). Had him earlier in the season, and they just don't create enough on a regular basis from what i've seen.

I don't like to chances of Giroud being nailed on; I'm just not sure Arsene likes him all that much or trusts him. I can see him being a super-sub type; but I just can't see him starting all of those games.

Costa will and he will score in two of those three.

Best case scenario is that you get the same output from Giroud - if he plays.

I agree, he's not nailed on at all.

But should've had a brace this weekend. Arsenal are gonna demolish some of these teams; never feel Chelsea are as capable of demolishing.

So much great terminology on here:

OOP - Out of Position (e.g. Sanchez is playing as a striker, but he is classed as a midfielder so is OOP)
Enabler - Cheap player that frees up funds so you can spend them elsewhere
Essential - Player who is essential to include in your squad
    DGW - Double Gameweek
Big Hitter - Player valued over £10m in FPL
Differential - Player with less than 7.5% ownership that could boost your ranking if they play well that gameweek
Kneejerk - Transferring in or out a player based on their performance in one gameweek
TC - Triple captain (FPL chip)
BB - Bench boost (FPL chip)
AOA - All out attack (FPL chip)
    WC - Wildcard
Troll - Player who scores points when you don't have them, but blanks when you do (e.g. Lukaku is a FPL troll)
ITB - Money 'in the bank' to spend on players
    FT - free transfer
Fodder - Player who is cheap and sits on your bench all the time so you can spend more money on players who start (e.g. Amat is fodder)
Nailed - Player who will start every game (e.g. Lukaku is nailed on for Everton)

      1. Ruth_NZ

Yes. A player never "trolls" you. You "troll" yourself by making invalid assumptions and then blaming someone else for them.

People would have been complaining to the skies about Guardiola "trolling" them when the teams were announced yesterday. It would still be going on had Aguero not come on and scored. But the possibility/likelihood of Guardiola doing something like that was (and is) as plain as day.

        Caveat Emptor always.

Who knows? Would depend on how easily I could re-distribute the cash and how many hits it would need.

But I never had the slightest intention to bring him in so maybe I'm not the person to ask.

Fair enough. Was just curious as to your level of stubbornness when it comes to moves like that - I kinda feel those that made the move would do well to stick more than a week before making a knee-jerk move.

                Ah. Well. It depends.

If I think I have made a mistake I correct it. I sold Sanchez at 11.1m and had to buy him back at 11.5m soon after. Basically I had made an assumption about his fitness that wasn't borne out and had to take my medicine.

But if I don't believe I made a mistake - just that happenstance worked against me - then I generally stick. I sold Aguero for Zlatan in GW10 (I think), that was the week of Heaton's miracle performance at Old Trafford when Zlatan could have had 4 or 5 but blanked, while Aguero scored a brace.

It was painful but didn't invalidate the reasons behind my decision so I stuck with Zlatan - and very nicely that has worked out too.

What I do try to avoid is knee-jerking around on the basis of recent points (what many on here call "form" but isn't anything of the sort). I'd rather make transfers and shape my team with an underlying rationale rather than reacting to last week's points or this week's bandwagon. Or to my own emotional responses to good and bad weeks actually.

It's cool to see some terms which started off here which are now used frequently throughout the "FPL world".

      Differential for example.

Un-differential used to get used a bit more than it does now. A highly owned player you decide not to own (at least I think that's what it was).
