With the packed festive fixture schedule now at an end, our resident scribes and posters have been offering a helping hand to those keen to reshuffle their squads.

Differentials to draft in, the pitfalls of chasing tails and Africa Cup of Nations competitors to avoid are the subjects of this week’s community articles.

For our hot topic posters, the prospect of an emerging template and tweaks to the transfer market top the agenda, while bargain basement defenders take centre stage among our Members tables.

We finish off with a look at those at the summit of our community leagues, who have no pressing need to replace their top scoring Fantasy assets.

The Community Articles

With the second wildcard now available and the fixtures shifting in favour of teams with cheap assets, I took an opportunity to assess the best differential prospects for Fantasy managers to consider this month.

In addition, I analysed some of this season’s biggest bandwagons to see if chasing points has brought success. This will be particularly interesting to those tempted by Tottenham’s Dele Alli ahead of Gameweek 21.

Meanwhile, Rainy focused on some of the key players that will be missing this month in a refresh of his article on Africa Cup of Nations participants.

Elsewhere,  YMA has been named community writer of December by you following this week’s vote. A £20 Amazon voucher is on its way to him in recognition of his What the Form, Fixtures and Clean Sheets series.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

This season has been typified by a wealth of choice. But could a template finally be emerging in 2017?

This was a question posed by GK in his look at the most popular players among the community, but according to Top Marx’s regular look at the top five managers in our Hall of Fame, such uniformity may still be some way off.

His research showed that, while some of this elite group have opted to draft in Sergio Aguero immediately following his four-match ban, others prefer the consistency and security of start offered by Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Chelsea striker Diego Costa.

Our hot topic on the Manchester City marksman, who came off the bench to score in Gameweek 20’s home clash with Burnley, shows that opinion is also divided among the wider community on whether he is worth that £12.8m price tag.

Competition from festive fixture stars such as Oliver Giroud, who earned a 15-point Fantasy Premier League haul away to Bournemouth this week, further indicates that a template attack is still unlikely in the early part 2017.

Already more than 30,000 FPL managers have drafted in the Gunners striker this week, however, Rhinos believes the Frenchman could be set to leave his new owners disappointed due to the ongoing threat of rotation.

With a kind January fixture list, which includes a trip to Watford and home ties against West Ham and West Brom, Middlesbrough defenders have a strong case for joining a template in defence, should it emerge.

For those looking to invest, Diva sparked this discussion earlier in the week on which ‘Boro defensive asset to target.

Dele Alli is another to push for inclusion should a uniformed midfield emerge. His remarkable three braces in consecutive matches over Christmas certainly pleased many of those who responded to our Rough with the Smooth round up of your Gameweek 20 performances.

However, with all six of his festive goals coming from the same number of shots on target, Greenwindmill wonders whether Alli’s form is sustainable and if Gameweek 21 is too late to draft him in.

Not a week goes by without Fantasy Premier Leaue transfer market sparking controversy, with Torres Magic dropping by  this week to advocate making hits more costly as a way of potentially curtailing volatility.

Ryan also got involved in the debate by suggesting that free transfers should be dished out to patient managers who swerve hits over a 10-Gameweek period.

Our hot topic on your New Year’s resolutions certainly showed that taking hits remains a popular strategy, with some even looking to step up their visits to the transfer market in 2017.

Those that do will be keeping a close eye on bargains, with Team Cruel saying that Manchester United’s Paul Pogba looks undervalued at 8.5m, considering his attacking midfield role.

As with Sergio Aguero, the jury is still out on the value offered by Eden Hazard’s 10.4m price tag, according to over Midwicket’s discussion on whether the Chelsea schemer has become surplus to requirements in 2017.

Given his poor away form, with the Belgian failing to deliver an attacking return in six of nine road trips, it is perhaps unsurprising that more than 34,000 FPL managers have already shown him the exit this week.

Finally, fresh from his recent success on Channel 4’s Countdown Jarvish has been turning his word play skills to Fantasy Football with a look at how the jargon the community uses can be applied to real life.

The Members Tables

With a trip to Hull City and home encounters with Watford and Crystal Palace in January, Bournemouth players are set to be in big demand. To help pick the best Cherry, I’ve constructed this open filter table, which has a strong focus on accuracy and chance creation.

Following on from Diva’s hot topic on Middlesbrough’s best defenders wainwright has drafted this table looking at their backline’s key statistics.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The final festive fixture saw Gilles Wanlin grab the lead in my Millionaires Club, for those managers who had a rank above one million in Gameweek 12. He is now ranked 137,219, a far cry from his starting rank in this league of 1,276,023.

Spencer is the new leader of the FFS Moderators and Contributors league, with only the number of transfers made separating him from second placed TorresMagic.

Raul Seleccion continues to sit at the summit of Red Lightning’s Top 10k Any Season mini-league and is now into his eighth week within the top 1,000 in the overall rankings.

The first leader of Red Lightning’s January to May league is Ogie, who registered an impressive 98 points in its first week of scoring in Gameweek 20.

Ogie also got the top score, along with Midasboys XI, in TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing Competition. There are now 824 teams, after 88 were eliminated when the safety score was set at 45 in Gameweek 20. Entry is still open for those who match the 20 scores needed here.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Players rise on the basis of how many people have transferred them in their team, not on the basis if performance.

That sounds good yeah. Although I would also be tempted to just Origi to Gray/Wilson/Negredo given how much cash you have in that front line already.

Yeah am with you on the Gray/Negredo/Wilson transfer.

But am not a fan of Negredo, Wilson will be rotated with Afobe, and Gray has terrible fixtures.

In a fairly 50/50 decision I base it on upsides. For me the West Brom players all have enough upside ao if they score then they may well be involved.

I know Ake scored lots of goals in a short spell but so did Capoue. There is nothing to suggest that he will again. And Holebas may be worth starting but he has been poor for me the last few weeks. But perhaps give him 1 last huraah!

    This is my hateful eight:

Hazard, Sanchez, Phillips, Capooee and Llalana

    Costa, Ibra and Origi.

I would dearly like to remove Hazard and Origi for Erik and Defoe. However, something tells me to keep Hazard. Can't afford Defoe from Origi straight swap. Unless I get Rondon.

Does anyone else feel the same? Comfort me children.

Can you downgrade a defender? I get the dilemma. I am holding Hazard (but I do own Erik). I would be tempted to make the moves if you can't find the cash in defence.

Nope. I have Alonso but he's such a consistent 6 pointer I'm reluctant to get rid. The rest are Holebas, McAwful, Amat and Jones.

        0.2 in de bank.

Depending on when you got in Capoue then him to De roon as well could work.

The plan wouldn't be to play Taylor but your starting 3 can now play every game. Taylor only comes on when one is injured/suspended/dropped etc.

Rondon looks ace after this week. And Hazard has two great fixtures, wouldn't remove him until after them.

Origi for Gray looks good. Or upgrade Capoue to Junior and bench Origi.

Defoe is far and away the best value forward this year. 113 points already for less than 8m? If he was a midfielder every person on here would own him. On pens and nailed to boot.

If Sunderland were even vaguely good he would redefine essential.

How anyone can get Giroud or Lukaku over him is beyond me.

What runs of nothingness? The longest run of blanks he's had is 3 GWs and that only once. Pretty good for someone who started at 7m

              When I owned him (gw 13-18): 2,9,2,1,5,2 (avg 3.5)
              General blanks: GW 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 13, 15, 16, 18 (50%)
              Scored: GW 1, 3, 6, 10, 11, 12, 14, 19, 20 (45%)

I agree completely. He has been in my team nearly all season and he ticks over perfectly. Why anyone goes for Costa over him I never understand. You can't captain either and 1 is 3m cheaper and returns at a similar rate.

          Relies too much on Pens.

Lukaku is about to embark on a great run after this week.

Grioud is just a gamble due to rotation.

Maybe because of so many big hitter forwards delivering fairly consistently and only three forward slots, it is best to save the value/bargain hunts for midfield?

Defoe is a fire and forget forward who hauls when least expected. Can get hard to keep patience through blanks in easier matches when Lukaku, Ibra, Costa, Kane, Kun are making a case on a weekly basis.

Kane three blanks in four? Lukaku the world's biggest troll. Aguero near permanent absence this season and now not on pens.

              Hardly a case every week!

But they are not blanking all at once. Kane scores 16 against Watford and should have scored 12 against Southampton, Lukaku scores 8 and 11 two out of last three weeks, Aguero has his 5 goal haul etched in everyone's mind. Fire and forget is what goes against Defoe. You cannot forget about that third striker slot because the others offer the explosive potential of a brace every other week.

How does this look like for a WC team? Keep in mind that I'm struggling with a very low TV.

        Heaton Grant
        Brunt Daniels Rose Alonso Amat
        Phillips Sanchez Alli Cabaye Stanislas
        Barnes Costa Aguero

Way too much spent on defense imo. Daniels & Rose to Ake & someone to get Lallana over Cabaye

Far too much money in defence for a low TV team. I think I wouldn't go with Aguero with a low tv. You can then downgrade your 2 defenders and Aguero. Put dd Roon in for a cheap midfielder. Get in a proper striker instead of Barnes and upgrade your other cheap midfielder (keep Phillips).

        4. MTPockets

Not sure Brunt + Daniels + Rose + Alonso is necessary.
Would downgrade defence and upgrade elsewhere.

            Since you have Low TV,
            Aguero to Ibra
            Rose to Pieters/Chambers
            Upgrade Cabaye

If 3-5-2 then downgrade a defender, would even be tempted to go without Alonso and upgrade Cabaye.

            Alternative to 3-5-2 approach...

Cabaye to de Roon / Carrick
            Daniels to Ake
Barnes to Gray and switch to 4-4-2 for Gray's tougher fixtures

...might not work, but a move I am pondering.

Cabaye? No. Downgrade to a 4.4, downgrade one of the back line and upgrade Barnes to a proper striker.

          My team..

          Pick - Grant
          Baines - Brunt - Holebas - Taylor - Amat
Hazard - Sanchez - Eriksen - Phillips - De roon
          Aguero - Ibra - Defoe

          1 FT
          Bank 0.3m

The plan is to save a transfer this week and then do Holebas > McCauley next week. As long as Holebas doesn't double drop I have the cash.

However, part of me is just tempted to make the switch this week as Holebas has been a huge troll recently and will probably double dip when I least expect it or get sent off etc.

Or do you see an even better option?

No interest in a Chelsea defender with those fixtures.

I also think Ake went on a Capoue like scoring run and I don't see that is likely to continue (I would like him or a Boro defender as my 4th defender though) and I want an upside to my starting defender.

On Wildcard which is the best option:

              A) Erikssen (Have Alli)

              B) Walcott (Have Sanchez)

              C) Ozil (Have Sanchez)

              D) Hazard (Have Costa)

Eriksen has form but not the best fixtures.
Oz & Wally have fixtures but no form.
Hazard has no form and neither great fixtures and he's doesn't get points away.

What do you think of this move:

Evans, Gibson, Allen -> Ake, Chambers, Phillips for a -8?

              It would give me:

              Heaton
              Rose, Ake, Chambers
              Sanchez, Lallana, Alli, Phillips

I'm sure it has been discussed but what are everyone's thoughts on Kun coming off pens last night? Surely at nearly 13m and not on pens he is becoming overpriced? I own him but considering down grading to Costa/Giroud and upgrading a mid or defender.

It's another black mark against him isn't it?

12.8m for a striker who's getting booked frequently who no longer takes pen with a manager who's happy to rotate him and every other member of his squad.

Bought him because the Burnley game wad hard to resist but no longer want him, can't pick a captain right now so would rather invest the extra money into the team to make it not so reliant on 2 or 3 big hitters.

Good point there Q! @myster I am not saying that someone should/n't buy him. If you or anyone else doesn't like him don't get him don't tell others not to get him. I am saying that a lot of guys around here should let others decide abot their players. Don't get that good samaritan advices, probably they are just courageing themselves:)

Brought him in last week, triple capped him but I've now got rid. Too many questions to be answered right now: penalties, minutes, value, Jesus, form, etc.

Not worth downgrading your whole team for anymore imo.

              At the moment standing at:

              Heaton - Robinson
              Alonso - Holebas - Evans - Ake - Amat
              Sanchez - Hazard - Lallana - Phillips - Coquelin
              Ibra - Kane - Origi

              2.9ITB.

              A bit longer term options:

              A) Origi, Haz, Holebas, Evans -> Lukaku, Alli, Rose, Brunt to balance out a bit. If I lose Haz, need to get Costa tho imo.
              or maybe
              B) Origi, Coq, Holebas, Evans -> Rondon, Stanislas, Rose, Brunt for options at front 8?
              C) Something else with players like Baines, Daniels and Coutinho (for example by. not upgrade Coq but keep money for Lallana-> Coutinho)

Coquelin out, Origi out, Holebas out - Alli/Eriksen in, Defoe in and Chambers/Ake in. Switch Allie/Eriksen to Coutinho if they don't do well later on.

Can't afford them all unfortunately. 🙂 Played around a bit and atm I would have exact cash for: Origi, Lallana, Coquelin, Holebas -> Rondon, Coutinho, Stanislas, Rose, which would leave me with:

                  Heaton | Robinson
                  Alonso | Rose | Evans | Ake | Amat
                  Sanchez | Hazard | Coutinho | Phillips | Stanislas
                  Ibra | Kane | Rondon

With that team I'd be missing a Spurs midfielder. If Hazard doesn't deliver, doing Haz and Kane to Spurs mid and Costa could be on the cards and that would leave solid amount to bank as well.

Kun owner, didn't especially like what I saw last night in the same way I didn't when I watched Kane last match. Both Spurs and City seem to be heading towards a Liverpoolesque front 3, with each of the 3 sharing points. Wasn't really till the last 20mins before Kun properly shifted into the middle, prior to that, he seemed to be picking up the ball deep on the right wing a lot, and was assisting the assister without enough time to get into the box himself...Sterling looks like he could offer real value if he plays at least 3 in every 4.

Sterling will be rotated too. I'm ignoring all City assets even though I expect them to be one of the teams that will score the most goals this season. Too many changes (for my taste) in line-up every single week. No one is 100% safe.
Fair play to those who invested in Agüero. It's your team after all and you can do whatever you want. He'll score and assist goals but so will other strikers in the league.

There's just so much uncertainty with Arsenal mids other than Sanchez that it's best not to go there for atleast 1 or 2 matches. You don't know how Walcott will do if Giroud is starting. And if Giroud is starting I think Ozil is the one to have.

Only Wenger can answer this question, we can only speculate. But given the fact that Arsene rates him very highly he'll find a way to put him in starting XI sooner or later.

Giroud is nowhere near being nailed.
Liverpool dont have the best fixtures and you might want Coutinho over Lallana.

Trying to plan which players to get in over the next few GWs is proving to be difficult. So many little and immediate fixture shifts with Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal with Spurs and Everton also having some decent fixtures.

Who are you planning on getting, transferring and/or keeping?

I have Aguero at the moment but may FT to Costa so I can get Bellerin for Arsenal's fixtures to remove him to get funds for Kun v WHam

I'm also not considering removing Ibra ATM, maybe he's worth moving on too?

My team, with 1FT and 1m ITB:

              Heaton
              Holebas Baines Valencia
              Phillips Sanchez Hazard Eriksen
              Origi Costa Ibrahimović

              Pickford Carrick Brunt Amat

Thinking Origi to Gray this GW, then Holebas to Ake the following and rotate a 4-4-2 with Gray's tougher fixtures.

I also have Origi & Hazard to Aguero & Stanislas (-4) as an option.

              What would you do?

Dropping Alonso and Origi for -8 , which is better?

              A) Giroud + Daniels

              B) Lukaku + Ake

              C) Carroll + Koscielny + 1.4 mil to upgrade Can or Stanislas later on.

              D) Keep Origi, bench him and drop Alonso + Can for Daniels + Antonio (-8)

Alonso just needs a little bit of luck to get points, as he s always close to doing something.
                I remember 3 times:
-he was all alone next to Pedro and he d score if pedro wasn't so selfish.
-he took a free kick and hit the crossbar.
-he would have got an assist last game if hazard could score that easy header

Interesting looking at teams with Aguero.

              Should I own Aguero?

I think it comes down to Transfer value.

High Transfer Value then you can accomodate him

Low Tranfer value then the money you save in owning a Kane or Costa or Giroud balances the rest of your team to look similar to Kun owned high TV teams.

The one exception - A Low TV team where you captain him every week. You don't need as many other heavy hitters as you don't need thd captaincy options. That is the time I would own Kun if I had a Low TV.

Too much kneejerking around this Aguero malark.

Yes his form isn't great coming back from a ban but we all know what I can do. Penalties or no penalties doesn't matter I don't think. City also one of if not definitely (on paper) the best attacking team in the prem.

Those considering ridding him, think of the potential differential value of holding him and his consistency in recent years. He's essential to me and the best player in the league along with Sanchez and Hazard.

Penalties are quite a big issue; I think he scored five or six last season. Take that off his tally and his already questionable value dips even further. What price would he be if the FPL could reassess him right now under present circumstances? 11.5m absolute max imo.

Just counted. Four in the EPL and two in other competitions, Even still, four was approaching 20% of his whole tally. Deduct that from 12.8m.

Is Toure nailed though? Could even still take quite a few himself if Toure is rotated.
Also gives Aguero a chance to get assists from going down in the box. Something he wouldn't get when taking them himself.

Not too much but still room for downgrading Barragan to Ake/Chambers/Nyom, only if you think you need the extra cash elsewhere

                No.

The cheapest defence I could come up with where the players play and you don't double up and you have clean sheet potential is:

                Grant - Hennessey
                Chambers - Holgate - Ake - Nyom - Ward

              Bench Two:

              A) Pieters
              B) Ake
              C) Phillips
              D) Barnes
