Welcome to our regular Friday lunchtime article that focuses on our partner game FanDuel. We will be running through the upcoming contests on offer, plus the prizes available, and, as usual, we will put forward our strongest line-up to help guide your player selections.

There are three opportunities to get involved and enter FanDuel contests over the weekend.

The full slate contests all ten fixtures of the round and begins with the 12.30pm early encounter between Spurs and West Brom, marking the first weekend deadline for entries.

You can also enter contests for just the Saturday and Sunday slates.

Saturday offers a “late start” option, with a deadline set for the three o’clock kick-offs. Meanwhile, to get involved in Sunday’s contests, you’ll need to submit entries in time for the 1.30pm kick-off between Everton and Manchester City.

FanDuel are again rolling out an offer for new accounts: users that sign up before midday tomorrow will receive £5 in free credit, no deposit required.

Use the promo code “SCOUTFIVER” when registering your account to claim the offer.

If you are just starting out with FanDuel then the selection below can be a useful example of how to structure a team and establish an approach to picking players.

We would also recommend taking a look at this strategy guide that examines who you should be targeting and offers further tips on how to construct a FanDuel squad.

My Strongest XI

Hugo Lloris £7.1m
Alfie Mawson £6.9m
Ashley Williams £7.4m
Danny Rose £8.6m
Junior Stanislas £7.7m
Yohan Cabaye £8m
Robert Snodgrass £8.8m
Gylfi Sigurdsson £11.0m
Dele Alli £12.6m
Jermain Defoe £9.3m
Olivier Giroud £12.2m

The Key Picks

We highlighted the value of Hugo Lloris in the Weekly Shop and can’t look past the Frenchman for our keeper’s jersey.

Mauricio Pochettino’s resilient side have the best defensive record in the league in front of their own fans, conceding just five goals in ten outings at White Hart Lane and just once in the last four. Visitors West Brom are set for a rearguard action and blanked at Arsenal and Chelsea over their last three away ties, giving us plenty of confidence in a Spurs shut-out.

Unlike goalkeepers, defenders in FanDuel don’t benefit from clean sheet points. However, we’re still doubling up on the Spurs defence due to Danny Rose’s attacking prospects.

The full-back’s forays down the left could provide returns, with Rose recording more goal attempts (21) than any other defender this season, while he also ranks fifth for chances created (21) despite only making 15 appearances.

Two goals and a trio of assists have contributed to Rose’s FanDuel average of 23.1 points per match to this point and we think he can hit that again for the Baggies visit.

Swansea City’s defence offer us an option for very different reasons.

We’re going to take a punt on Paul Clement’s selection and back Alfie Mawson for a recall after he was omitted from the Swans’ FA Cup line-up at Hull City. We will have to consult the teamsheets on this one and have a late swap ready but, at just £6.9m, Mawson looks worthy of the risk.

Impressive in the 2-1 win at Crystal Palace in Gameweek 20 and on the scoresheet that evening, Mawson would seem likely to earn a recall for the visit of Arsenal.

With Olivier Giroud likely to start for the Gunners, we’re expecting the young centre-back to be kept busy, which should see him rack up some strong numbers for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI).

An ex-Swan and a hugely reliable source of CBI’s completes our three-man defence.

Ashley Williams is in the top three defenders for CBI’s (55) over the last four Gameweeks and a strong 24.5 point average over his previous six looks likely to be maintained or even bettered for the visit of Manchester City to Goodison Park.

Goals look likely in the KCOM stadium encounter between Hull City and Bournemouth and that has us back two midfield assets on show on Humberside.

Bournemouth’s Junior Stanislas has been hampered by injury for part of this campaign, though the winger has still delivered returns in six of his last nine starts.

Back-to-back assists makes it six in total this term, while three goals and set-piece duties add to the appeal of the Cherries asset.

With Marco Silva overseeing his first league match in charge of Hull City, we’ve gone for their stand-out performer from the campaign so far.

Robert Snodgrass has notched goals in the last two Gameweeks to bring his tally to seven for the season. Four scores of 40+ points and an average of 23.5 FanDuel points make the Tigers midfielder a shoo-in for our line-up.

Crystal Palace’s trip to West Ham gives us the opportunity to consider Yohan Cabaye.

The playmaker appears to have benefited from Sam Allardyce’s appointment, averaging 27 FanDuel points over the three matches since the new manager’s arrival at Selhurst Park. Cabaye has recorded 13 interceptions, six tackles and scored once from four shots on target in that trio of outings.

Wilfried Zaha’s absence will put more onus on the Frenchman to serve up a first assist of the campaign, while his all-round role under Big Sam appears to suit the FanDuel scoring system.

We seriously considered including Christian Eriksen (£14m) but opted instead for his cheaper in-form team-mate.

A third consecutive brace for Dele Alli last time out made it seven goals in four matches, claiming a 44.25 FanDuel point average. With eight of his 16 shots in that period have been on target, the Spurs midfielder is our most expensive investment for the weekend’s matches.

Gylfi Sigurdsson also gets the nod in the centre of the park as we opt for a 3-5-2 set-up.

Ranked eighth top midfielder for points per appearance (24.18), the playmaker sits joint-top with Tottenham’s Eriksen for shots on target (27) amongst FanDuel midfielders in 2016/17.

Sigurdsson’s dead-ball abilities also look key – Swansea are second only to Palace for headed goal attempts (60 to 61) this season and Arsenal boast the fourth worst record for aerial efforts against ahead of their Liberty Stadium showdown.

Our front duo have both exhibited form of late.

Jermain Defoe has netted three over his last two league run-outs to make it 11 goals this campaign. It’s difficult to build a case against the Black Cats forward when priced at 9.3m, particularly when hosting a Stoke City side that has leaked 11 goals in their last three away matches.

Our final berth is filled by Olivier Giroud. The Arsenal forward has notched in three successive Gameweeks and also served up a pair of assists in his last outing. With Theo Walcott still on the sidelines, we reckon that the Frenchman is set for a fourth straight start in the league.

This Week’s Contests

The largest pot this weekend is again the Fan Favourite spanning the full weekend slate. This offers £5000 in prize money for a £5 entry, with the top placed manager claiming £750.

There’s also a double up game with £1000 available, with a £10 buy-in with the top 50 players fetching prizes.

The “Saturday Special” runs over the slate covering the three o’clock kick-offs and offers a £1000 pot for a £3 entry; the winning manager claims £100, with the cash prizes running up to 95th place.

The “Sunday Special” has a pot of £1400 for a fee of £7 to enter: the top prize is £280, with managers ranking up to 47th position winning cash.

Remember that, whatever contests you choose to enter, the FanDuel late-swap function means that it’s possible to scan the teamsheets and change any non-starters in your squad right up until kick-off.

A reminder that you can register for a free account at FanDuel via this link. Use the promo code “SCOUTFIVER’ when signing up to claim the current offer.

West Brom boss Tony Pulis insists Albion must move on after midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin joined Everton.

"We're trying to get a level of player that will improve us. He's gone to a club that have finished in the top seven for the last few years and play in front of 40,000 each week.

"After Morgan there was still money to go for others as well. We've got people we'd like to bring in, whether we can is another matter.

"It's a small pool we're fishing from. I don't want to get into a situation where there's a lot of players here and you don't know how good they are."

Please help. Play my wildcard or not? Already have taken a minus 4 to get this team out with AAO and am still savaged by injuries.

    Heaton
    Alonso Jones
    Sanchez Ozil Stanilas Phillip Capoue
    Zlatan Costa Carroll

    Pickford Amat Bellerin Evans

None of bench will play at all. Alonso a major doubt. Phillips away at Spurs.

Stick or Wildcard. Please vote. Am currently 4th in very competitive mini league and don't want to lose ground. Could take a minus 8 to bring in Rose for Evans, but that seems extreme...

Afternoon. How's the team? How to mend my holey defence?

    Grant, (Jak)
    Ake, Bertrand, Cedric, Friend, (**Bellerin)
    Sanchez, Hazard, Alli, Stanislas, (Philips)
    Costa, *Ibra, (**Anichebe)

    A) Bertrand to Baines (-4)
    B) Ake to Brunt (-4)
    C) Both (-8)
    D) Neither: risk having just 1 or 2 defs this week

I'm looking to do these changes in the next couple weeks anyway. Cedric to Brunt also an option if Ake's an option.

Bellerin out, Brunt flagged / away at Spurs, Amat unlikely to play. Holebas been struggling and Alonso apparently a doubt too. Should I do a -4 to get Daniels in for Bellerin (allows Sig > Coutinho next week) or play my all out attack? Capoue would act as 5th mid

It is very good. My concern would be the money in the defence. Giroud is a guaranteed starter for now but won't be soon, with not too many options in his price range for change. You have 5 superb defenders, who offer attacking returns, but might only be able to play 3 some weeks. Is there a point in having so much money on your bench, and the benching headache?

Only that when everyone else is moaning and taking hits as they don't have 3 viable defenders I can cope with a couple of injuries without a hit. I don't mind a benching headache, makes the game more interesting.

Lovely. Be cautious of Yoshida however, Southampton are looking to bring in a CB. Good short term punt though.

    Boruc (Hennessey)
    Baines, Brunt, Chambers (Muniesa, Yoshida)
    Sanzhez, Eriksen, Phillips, Stanislas (Cabaye)
    Ibra, Giroud, Costa

    Any of these changes beneficial
    1) Boruc to Mignolet?
    2) Sanchez and Costa to Aguerro and Ozil?

Team is as below. Mane obviously needs to come out. Should I do:

    A) Mane to ~6m midfielder and Rondon to Lukaku (over the next 2 weeks so not for a hit) or:

    b) Mane to Ozil

    Cech Pickford
    Holebas Daniels Jones (Nyom Amat)
    Sanchez Mane Hazard Philips Sterling
    Defoe Ibra (Rondon)

    Thanks

      I would go for.....
Mane and Rondon to Giroud and a cheap mid.
Next week upgrade a defender to Baines.

So the Conte press conference is largely inconclusive and has given us absolutely nothing? I own both Ake and Alonso.

All it's told me is that he's learning how Chelsea "play" a bit more. I reckon he'll be nailed next season. Alonso a doubt this weekend, he was injured for the FA Cup and Conte hasn't said any different other than that he needs to assess a few players. Ake would be the natural replacement?

No chance I'm getting rid this week anyways (was such a long time ago I forgot I actually transferred Ake in before Akegate had even started), worth monitoring this week and next then he can be on his way if that's how it goes.

Alonso will start. This Ake for Alonso stuff is peculiar - if anyone goes to the left, it will be Ceasar. Ake will compete in the centre - where he has been performing this year for Bournemouth. Conte has not brought him back, off superb performances at cb, to compete for a left wing back role he has never played. At least not immediately. It is an idea given to much substance on here, which has created that substance because of its reiteration. I expect the team to be the usual team, with the biggest doubt over the Fabregas vs Matic quandry.

Ok. On that logic, then possibly a move of Azpi to LWB and then Ake to CB? Would make just as much sense.

Good for you if you only have 3 CHE players. Some of us have 4 and would like to make a transfer.

      Hoping Alonso plays though.

True, didn't even think about this part of it. Still, at least you have one week to monitor? Unless you made your transfer pre-Ake moving to Chelsea.

Which makes me think, there was a slight gap inbetween the announcement and the move on FPL, anyone with 4 wise enough to make there transfers before Ake swapped teams? Now that would be a pro-FPL move.

I could do it before he officially came back, but didn't want to knee jerk my transfer. So I waited and I'm ditching Ake. If he seems like he's nailed the CHE spot in first 11, he's back for one of them.

But was thinking about removing him before he swapped teams. Just decided not to. 🙂

          Good luck.

Conte been pretty conclusive on Ake. Says he needs time to adapt to style of play. Not sure if he'll be invovled tomorrow and hasn't tried him at LWB this week, just CB. What more do you want to say Alonso is safe!!

He has managed a minor injury all season with weekly games, and this time has had a longer break. It might be a concern long term, but there is no real evidence to say he won't start tomorrow imo. I think alot of the concern is being invented by strange claims about the reason for Ake's recall.

No people thinking Ake could dislodge/rotate with Alonso. Yeah Alonso had a niggle, but clear Conte doesn't see that as a worry otherwise he'd have been looking at him at LWB all week surely.

So, why are people so confused? Aké doesn't start and may not even be on the bench.

"Conte will also make a decision on whether Nathan Aké is on the bench. The Dutch Under-21 international is available for the first time since his return from loan at Bournemouth."

      http://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2017/01/rolling-blues01.html

“It is important for him [Aké] to have a bit of time with us. He will be at the match, not sure if he’ll make the bench. I’m very pleased he stayed with us. He has improved a lot. He is a good player, good personality [and he] can play in the middle or left of defence, or even wing-back.”

      http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/578182/Chelsea-v-Leicester-Nathan-Ake-won-t-play-Antonio-Conte

      Seems pretty clear-cut to me.

If you want Lukaku long term then do that for sure! or Giroud in for him. A hit is fine for a long term move with such a clear benefit as that, especially if you have Anichebe, Evans and Amat in your squad.

And obviously play DeRoon. There is no question - a starting midfielder vs a starting doubt who is not likely to return more than 1 point.

Anyone think Schlupp might be a decent option at 4.8 if he signs for Palace? Seems likely to play more as a winger than left back given Palace are said to be chasing a few left backs.

My last debate - A) Rose vs B) Walker?

Rose is better going forward, but Walker seems to do better with bonus', perhaps because of Rose's propensity to foul and pick up yellows in part. Rose is on 8 yellows - he is more likely to score, but will surely be banned for 2 games at some point next month or in early march.

    1. greghammer95
      • 16 Years
      9 years, 21 days ago

Both good options. Long term you'd say Walker as you know Rose will miss a couple of games. I think Walker's attacking exploits are overlooked in this situation, one of the best attacking defenders in the league but compared to Rose' goal threat makes him look mediocre which he isn't.

Help appreciated with what to do here

    Grant
    Alonso Brunt (Doubt) Chambers
    Sanchez Stanislas Lallana Phillips
    Benteke (Doubt) Aguero Ibra (Doubt)

Foster Walcott (Out) Holgate (Wont start) Ake (Wont start)

No bench at all and 3 doubts on the pitch. 1 FT 0.4itb

I'm thinking Walcott>Pedro but means I would be stuck if I wanted Costa/Hazard with 3 Chelsea due to Ake also if brunt doesn't play I would be playing with 10. Alternatively could do Holgate>Ward to have another playing defender which I need generally but then stuck with Walcott
