Last week’s runaway poll leader Alexis Sanchez (11.9) has the perfect storm of consistency, fixtures and form to remain another strong contender in our latest rundown of the most popular captaincy options.

Sitting in 37.4% of Fantasy Premier League squads, the Chileans’ last-minute penalty at home to Burnley means he has now delivered attacking returns in nine of his last ten league matches ahead of next week’s visit from Watford. The Hornets, like the Clarets, are another travel-sick side, having shipped 21 goals and earned just two clean sheets on the road.

Sanchez’ eight attempts against Burnley, more than any other player in Gameweek 22, also highlights that, in terms of underlying form, he remains a superb armband option. He’s now fired 25 attempts on goal in his last three outings at the Emirates Stadium.

Olivier Giroud (8.7), who ended a four-match scoring run with a weekend blank, offers a cheaper alternative from among Arsenal’s ranks, as does Mesut Ozil, who earned a third successive assist on Sunday.

With 12 goals in their last four league matches, Spurs’ attacking credentials are not in question. But with Harry Kane (11.1), Dele Alli (8.8) and Christian Eriksen (8.7) all at the centre of their fine recent run, the captaincy vote is likely to be split ahead of their trip to Sunderland.

Alli is the most popular of the trio, with a quarter of FPL managers currently owning the England midfielder on the back of eight goals and an assist in his last six.

Nonetheless, Kane’s six successful strikes and two assists over the same period will ensure he also garners votes, while Eriksen cannot be overlooked – he’s bagged six double-figure hauls in the last 10 Gameweeks.

Another popular candidate is likely to be Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.7), who like Giroud, handed his armband backers a rare blank in Gameweek 22.

The big Swede failed to deliver a goal or assist for the first time since Gameweek 15 as a result of Saturday’s result. Hull City’s visit to Old Trafford may provide the perfect opportunity for him to make amends, however, given that the Tigers have conceded 26 times on the road, more than any other team.

Team-mate Paul Pogba (8.5) could also prosper in that fixture. One goal from 15 shots in the last four Gameweeks suggests that the 11.1% owned Frenchman has been unlucky not to notch with greater regularity.

Among Gameweek 23’s most enticing differential options are Swansea City pair Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.2) and Fernando Llorente (6.1).

With penalty duties and a goal in the Welsh side’s surprise away victory at Anfield on Saturday, their 5.2% owned Icelandic schemer should attract attention when Southampton visit.

A clean sheet at home to Leicester City on Sunday was the Saints’ first shut-out since Gameweek 16, which will also give hope to Llorente’s supporters after the Spaniard’s weekend brace brought his tally to eight for the season.

Virgil van Dijk’s availability could be the key factor at play here, with the Dutchman sustaining an ankle injury in Southampton’s win over the Foxes on Sunday.

Liverpool’s home tie with Chelsea looks tough to call and, given the ease of Manchester United, Spurs and Arsenal’s fixtures, their key assets are unlikely to challenge at the summit of the poll.

For those who fancy the Blues to get the better of Jurgen Klopp’s side, Diego Costa (10.3) appears to offer the greatest potential for returns.

His strike against Hull was his 15th of the season and ensures he remains level with Sanchez in the hunt for the 2016/17 Golden Boot. Liverpool’s failure to keep a clean sheet in five of their last six league outings also strengthens Costa’s appeal.

The Spaniard has scored eight of his 15 goals away from home this season.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of next week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

A lot of sense in that.

Think giroud hurts his potential output a little though. Wish he was up front again.

Captaincy poll 'won' last GW, but that is not the norm. Thinking Kane (if you have him) then Ibra.

Yeah I sometimes wonder why we all don't just do that, however fixtures and other form players always turn heads. This week for instance Ibra and in particular Kane definitely look like strong alternatives.

Guys, any changes would you recommend to this team for a hit?

    Grant
    Walker / Jones / Brunt
    Sanchez / Lallana / Alli / Philips
    Kane / Giroud / Ibra
    (Pickford / Alonso / Fletcher / Amat)

    Heaton
    Jones Rose Baines
    Sanchez Erickson Hazard Stanislas Phillips

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Gameweek 22 Rough with the Smooth

Please leave your tales of woe and joy here. Remember it's what you did do, not what you didn't. ( a story of almost getting in and captaining Coleman will be met with what at school in the 80s was known as 'an itchy beard' response).

Mine was pretty rough, but not because I did anything bad - just Giroud, Lukaku, Lallana, Ibra, Stanislas and Phillips all failed to deliver in the same week.

Sanchez saved me from humiliation and I brought Lukaku in for Benteke (which long term will pay off I'm sure).

Also the only GWK since ditching Hazard three weeks ago that I was scared of turned out to be unwarrented - he's poor as an FPL asset at home and away it seems.

In the end not having a playing WBA defender proved my undoing.

So all in all pretty meh week.

It was a pretty poor week for well owned strikers in general (only Costa delivered - Llorente and Carroll not that well owned).

        Smooth:
Captain Sanchez paid off (by the skin of his teeth), Kane and Alli both got returns at the Etihad (which is not a given by any means - also sweetened by Eriksen not getting anything), Alonso and Foster got clean sheets, Brunt hit triple digits and the back of the net again. And I picked the right keeper again (Foster over Heaton).

        Rough:
Transferred in the wrong Spurs wingback. (At least for this week.)
Played Rose over Chambers, after humming and hawing over which to bench and which to start all week. In the end Rose conceded less goals but still scored less points, so feel my decision was slightly vindicated.

Very similar to you Jonty. I had Ibra, Lallana, Stanislas, Phillips and Giroud. I had Lovren and Jones in my defence, Sanchez as VC (I was really delighted with that last minute winner...NOT!) and Hazard as Cap. Not to mention Carroll and Pieters on my bench. Worst gameweek of the season for me. If you looked at my team pre the actual games you would have thought I was on to a winner! 🙁

A nice solid 62 to build on last weeks 94(-4). First time this season I've managed back-to-back decent weeks!

Smooth; Stuck by Firmino and Carroll and both returned for me. Kane(c) worked out ok too as a non-Sanchez owner as my other options Pedro, Hazard and Ibra blanked. I had a feeling Hull would keep the score down. Alonso, Heaton, and a few 3 pointers from Phillips and Pedro to round off.

      Rough; Nothing! For once. Hallelujah!

Rank up to 746k after a disastrous pre-Xmas run dropping to 1.6m. Two transfers to get Sanchez in this week. All good.

Smooth: Still having Siggy for goal at Anfield, Captain Sanchez late penalty, McAuley assist and bonus, clean sheets for Alonso and Baines.
Rough: Patience with Hazard not rewarded, no returns from Ibra, Kaku, Rondon (get outta the way Phillips) or Eriksen but 61 score still decent.

Pretty rough week went from 38k to 57k overall!

Wasn't anything major just slightly behind the pace and made a -4.

A frustrating gameweek as my team looked great on paper but some surprising results meant the points didn't roll in as expected.

Made two transfers for a -4, trying to sort out my defence.

I did Ake > Chambers at the beginning of the week then did Amat > Brunt just before the deadline.

Would have played Holebas if I hadn't got Brunt in so that hit worked out +9.

Ended up on 71 (-4) with 5 of my 7 attackers blanking. Andy Carroll did me proud.

Probably the smoothest of gameweeks 😀

Captained Firmino and my transfers were Pieters + Holebas -> Chambers + Brunt (-4) that paid off handsomely.
With 78(-4), I ended up with my personal best GW rank and OR of the season

            Foster
            Walker Baines Brunt Cedric

getting me a whopping 44 points at the back. This was enabled by my Holebas to Baines transfer before deadline, in addition to getting Brunt as my immediate previous transfer in GW20 in time to get both of his goals.

Rough - only person in my mini league not to own Sanchez and have Heaton in goal. Gutted.

A back 5 of Alonso McAuley Brunt Cedric and Azpi. Started Alonso Azpi Brunt alongside Stan, Haz, San, Phillips, Lallana, Ibra and Kane like most people would have. Cedric and McAuley outscored everyone except Brunt.

Not really a rough, happy to have a back 5 like this. Just did Azpi to Coleman so looks even better now. More bench headaches this weekend though.

62 points, pulled 18 back on my mini league leader after being over 100points down coming into the Christmas period. Also gone from 500k to 100k over that period.

Rough had matip for Liverpool get brought on for a couple of mins for a point which stopped McAuley coming on with 12points gave me a painful Saturday as a Liverpool fan also

SHOULD HAVE BEEN ROUGH - BUT WAS SMOOTH!

11.28am Saturday suddenly realised the time and desperately got on the FPL website to do my deeply thought out transfer of Siggy (done nothing for weeks to Stanislas (good fixture). Pressed the button to confirm transfer, but too late and it didn't go through. I I slumped on the settee to be punished for my tardiness - but Siggy scored and Stan did nothing, for once the Gods were with me!

Remember its what you did do not what you didn't.

That earns a chinny reckon I'm afraid.

Actual story is you kept Sigurdsson.

That was the rough. (Also, seeing recent departees from my team Rodriguez & Llorente smashing them in...)

The Smooth, I suppose, was benching McAuley last week for his -3, and then playing him this week for his 12.

following the arsenal game on my phone

rough: the late burnley penalty relegating koscielny from 8 points to 2.
smooth: the late arsenal penalty promoting koscielny from 2 points to 8. (alexis captain helped too, especially when you don't own heaton)

Smooth was getting 65 points irrespective of the rough, which was the failure by the big hitters Kun, Ibra and Coutinho plus the last minute change of Captain from Sanchez to Ibra

Smooth: transferred out Stanislas for Firmino as part of 2fts.

Smooth: Patience of holding Firmino, Costa & double West Brom defence paid dividends at last, fifth successive week of captain returns thanks to Sanchez, 75pts and moving into top 200k after being 872k five weeks ago.

Rough: Ongoing third striker issues that have dogged my season, after 12pts in 6 from Origi and just 60 points all season from my third striker it's time to go 3-5-2.

Rough: Driving 580 miles round trip to Anfield to see my transfer Coutinho go off early and get me one point. Van Dijk also a one pointer, missing out on Southampton clean sheet.
Smooth: My back 5 brought in 32 points.
Played 4-4-2 Captain Sanchez. Game Week 62 points.

Smooth: sanchez captain, kept costa through his price drops (sticking with points not price philosophy)
My defence chambers, alonso & used FT for evans to yoshida
I wasnt expecting a CS just wanted the extra funds for future defender transfer & didnt want to play holebas (amat 3rd on bench)

Rough: blanks from most of my attackers eriksen, haz, phillips, defoe, ibra

Hazard blank the most disapointing as i kept him for so long due to this fixture!

Smooth: Coleman in for Holebas (only because I delayed my intended transfer in of Baines too long and couldn't afford him after his price rise), Sanchez captain - was sitting in Pizza Hut with the wife and kids when I got the goal notification on my phone. Knocked a meat feast pizza on the floor in all the excitement. Wife just looked at me and said, "You are such a knob". 😀

Rough: played the wrong Bournemouth defender, Daniels for his attacking potential, and benched Smith.

On the back of the whole Costa-China debacle, I decided to cash in my profits on him for the fixtures of Lukaku with my 1 FT. We know how that turned out.

With Vertonghen and Evans injured, I was on the verge of taking a -8 for Coleman and Brunt, but decided, in all my wisdom, to not take the hits and gamble on Evans' possible fitness. WE KNOW HOW THAT TURNED OUT.

Ended on 47 with what could've been a great week to catch rivals. *sigh*

Rough all around.. 7th red arrow in last 10 and now out of top 350k. Got the keeper wrong, Dann gamble not working with a late goal conceded and even though I had coverage in 6 out of the 7 games on Saturday, 11 points was dreadful.

Only silver lining is that the team still looks good and Sanchez (c) worked to an extent. Not the worst week of the season so hopefully only way now is up.

Not sure whether a rough but AoA yielded a point so yay for that useless chip.

Ibra at the moment, but assuming I switch Hazard>Sanchez as planned barring injuries then I might change.

Ibra, Sanchez, Kane all solid options. Looks like I've dipped out on Hazard again, never own him at the right time!

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 23

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 11am tomorrow (Tuesday) and then be asked to submit their XI by next Monday 12noon by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article on Tuesday, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual the day before the first match of the Gameweek.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

Cheers Moin. I've been climbing up the rankings in the last 5 weeks without any Spurs assets. Just not sure whether it's now time to get rid of Aguero or not. Especially they did show some better attacking form vs Spurs (good fixtures also coming).

Exactly they have some good fixtures coming, finding the right city Asset right now is really difficult but with Aguero there is always scope.

If you really want Alli, You could downgrade Antonio and Upgrade Lallana.

I do like the look of Ibra this week as with any week but if Kaboul is still playing as the right-sided centre-back for Watford I think Sánchez is your prime option. Tore him apart at Vicarage Road.

Alli also a good option but I don't think he has the hat-trick potential of Ibra or Sánchez.

Should I go for the bench boost this weekend, and who should I captain? At the moment I'm thinking it should be Kane.

              Heaton (Jakupovic)
              Baines Brunt Alonso (Holgate Yoshida)
              Stanislas Sanchez Coutinho Alli (Fletcher)
              Costa Kane Ibracadabra

              Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Bench boost? No way. Save for a DGW or at least some better fixtures.

                Sanchez/Kane/Ibra all good armband options.

              Hi all

              Considering banking here:

              Randolph / Jaku
Alonso Jones Brunt / Pieters Amat
Alli Antonio KdB Sanchez ©/ Fletcher
              Giroud Ibra Rondon
              1.4 itb 1ft

              Nothing pressing right?

              Thanks!

Yeah I mean ideally I'd want Kane in for him. Would mean losing KdB when he's starting to show form, so I'm not sure at all.

Could take a punt on Chadli for KdB and Rondon out for Kane, but tbh I don't judge that as being worth the hit

Will give Rondon one more week

Can this year's wingback system justify playing 4 at back on occasions?

I'm currently lined up with a 352 with Ibrahimovic my main man with mainly Defoe and occasionally Rondon. Lallana and Phillips the benchables in midfield. I'm seriously contemplating. Trying on 442 or 451 occasionally by adding Coleman or Cahill to Alonso, Rose and Brunt

Are referees getting worse or is it just because there is more coverage now? How Andre Mariner didnt give a penalty for the Walker push on Sterling is beyond all comprehension. Should Sterling have fallen over to force his hand? If so then don't moan about players falling over to easy?

This current bunch of refs are awful - we used to just have Rob Styles, now virtually all of them are as bad as he was.

More coverage more angles etc. Few stone wall pens inc. Alonso v Hull. I think blaming the refs is harsh. I would much rather the human ascpect of refereeing than using video / robots

In my humble opinion, he should have. I think you have to take a player's reputation into account in a case like this, and knowing that Sterling dives every time he is in the opposition's box, Mariner might have reasoned that the push wasn't so hard since someone like Sterling didn't fall. I wouldn't have given it either but that's probably because I'm biased since I genuinly hate the guy with all his diving. It's a bit like: Karma strikes back now for me 😀

It was a pen, but sterling was a fool not to go down and he took an age to get his shot away to start with. One of the least clinical players in the league in front of goal.

No, Sterling should not have fallen over. Players simulating falls is the biggest problem in all of this. He should be encouraged to try and stay on his feet which, to his credit, he did (in this instance). The referee should give the penalty if he feels a foul has been committed, regardless of whether the player falls over or not.
