The complexity of the fixture schedule is ramping up as conflicting league and cup commitments clash for a number of teams and key Fantasy assets. Fortunately, some of our regular community posters have been on hand to start guiding us through the blanks and doubles, as well as offer advice on formation, team value and the pecking order within the improving Everton defence.

Ronald Koeman’s assets in attack also come under the watchful gaze of our community writers, while our Members tables take a peak at some of the key statistics for success in FanDuel.

We look back on all that, plus take time out to scan the top of our community leagues, who are no doubt already getting to grips with impending changes in the fixture calendar.

The Community Articles

Poor old Romelu Lukaku. Despite being one of Fantasy Football’s most significant and free-scoring assets over several seasons, he is still struggling to shake off his reputation for “trolling” Fantasy Football managers with unexpected disappointments.

Self-confessed fan of the Everton striker, MGPT, has decided to take action to debunk this myth, assessing Lukaku’s Premier League record in a bid to defend the striker’s honour.

The majority of the top five in our career Hall of Fame may take some convincing on that score, according to TopMarx’s latest look at this elite group. His analysis of their Gameweek 22 moves shows that just one of these top ranked managers have invested in the Belgian’s talents ahead of Everton’s kind run of fixtures.

Finally, for those who fancy honing their skills in a different sport, Rugby fan Hutch James served up this guide to the Fantasy game taking place around the forthcoming Six Nations tournament.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

With the first postponements now in place for Gameweek 26 due to the EFL Cup final, Jarvish dropped by to advise people to start preparing early. One of his latest posts on the issue, features an excellent spreadsheet on the current picture regarding blanks and double Gameweeks by Perchinho.

Preserving the Wildcard looks to be key given these impending fixture list complications, added Jarvish in another hot topic on how to get the best use of this chip – a crucial weapon over the vital second phase of the campaign.

We also joined the discussion with this hot topic focusing on those players set to face a Premier League blank due to the forthcoming Wembley showpiece in February.

However, this week saw some better news regarding missing players, as Ozil delivered us an updated report from the Africa Cup of Nations, bringing news of returning stars such as Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha, who will be back in domestic action following the conclusion of the tournament’s group stages.

Formation changes also topped this week’s agenda, with a points bonanza from defenders in Gameweek 22 giving many of those who responded to our Rough with the Smooth round-up the opportunity to ponder a switch to a four-man backline.

Sneivitz is among the community’s advocates of spending more in defence this season, especially as many are being utilised in attacking roles for their clubs.

Everton wing-backs Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman are among such forward-thinking defenders, according to In Conte we Trust’s look at this dynamic duo.

The Toffees midfield is also providing us with options, with Athletico Timbo dropping by to take a look at the merits of the improved form of Ross Barkley and Kevin Mirallas.

Not a week goes by without the Fantasy Premier League’s transfer market attracting debate.

This time Wakey took his turn on the soap box to lament some Fantasy managers’ obsession with chasing profit over points. He returned later in the week with some further musings on team value and the options open to those short on funds.

Ville Ronka is a Fantasy manager who can never be accused of wasting knee jerk transfers. According to our latest Hall of Fame update, he has retained his place at the summit based on a tried and tested patient approach to FPL management: so far this season he has yet to make a single points hit.

Given his success and an unexpected return to form for forgotten players such as Liverpool’s Robert Firmino, we wondered whether patience could once again prove a virtue in FPL.

Even the most patient of Fantasy managers would have long given up on Saido Berahino after months on the sidelines for West Brom. But now, 0.5m cheaper and perhaps an assured starter for new club Stoke City, we asked whether the striker could possibly return to the radar, along with a number of other cut-price gems.

We also took a look at some of the bargains at relegation battling sides who could well offer strong potential for the season run-in.

With a less than successful recent spell at West Brom, Berahino certainly has ‘something to prove’ – a cliché that comes under criticism from Epic Fail in his myth-busting look at some of Fantasy Football’s most overused terms.

Finally, FPL Virgin has been thinking about how FPL can make better use of its chips, with some new suggestions to consider.

The Members Tables

Maximillianfescue has compiled this handy table looking at some of the best data when considering a attacking assets, including goal involvement.

For those taking part in our FanDuel social league, my table looking at the key criteria for success in this format, should prove useful.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

In Red Lightning’s Top 10k Any Season mini-league, there’s no change at the top with Raul Seleccion still dominating proceedings. It is also business as usual in his January to May league, where Ogie Nolan continues at the summit. Ogie, whose team was mentioned on this week’s Scoutcast, is also top of our Members League.

Arutla Jatin is another dominant manager and retains top spot in our main league. He is up to second, 51 points behind overall leader Knut Hebaek.

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing the safety score was 44, which saw 100 players depart and 699 remain.

Torres Magic retains his lead in the FFS Moderators and Contributors league, 12 points ahead of second placed Spencer.

There’s also no movement at the top of my Millionaires Club, for those with an unfortunate Gameweek 12 rank above the one million mark, with Gilles Wanlin continuing his ascent up the rankings in style. He is now ranked an impressive 74,223.

Elsewhere, Jaffalicious delivered his latest report from the UEFA Champions League tournament, which has now reached the last 16 stage.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups, please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Being as favoured rule changes are being discussed here's my take.

As always when this topic comes up I would like to see a broad brush change to the game that evens up pts potential across the four positions. That could come in a number of ways but would probably involve an increase in CS pts for defenders/keepers or a part CS pt on 60 mins. It wouldn't have to be that (it's a bit too simple imo) but that seems the simple solution to start with.

What the game really needs is a rule change for defenders/keepers that make them inclusive as captain picks for the game at large (currently virtually nil) and a more valuable acquisitions for transferring in. It wouldn't take a massive shift in the game but would just need to be done in the right way.

The usual argument against it is that we FPL'ers would sooner be cheering on goals than defensive pts but that's a bit of a dud because we'd still be cheering on the goals anyway.

Wouldn't mind 5 points for a CS. Defender hits would be more viable and focusing on defence more important.

Aye. The one thing that would bother me with it just being about CS's is that it's (for most defenders) a single input for pts...whereas for mids and fwds it's assists and goals. If the purpose was to encourage more defender involvement in our planning and have them as captain picks then I feel it would mean a rule change that kept them in the game longer than the single concession of a goal. Does that make sense?

Wouldn't want to captain a defender tbh. You may as well captain Heaton if you think he will get a CS.

Only problem is the higher defenders scoring potential they increase in price. Would mean defenders become more expensive I reckon.

Pricing them more is fine. Probably adds 20 to a Chelsea defender etc.

Yes they probably would...but then mids and fwds would go down as well. The game would only ever be arranged/priced to ensure the 100 mill budget was playable

I think the clean sheet point in the only place in which you can balance things before going all UFPL with CBI etc, maybe 5 for defenders and 6 for keepers would be great and also drop the CS point for midfielders(they all add up).

Although saying that, the tackles/passing bonus in Sky really seems to offset the attacking points among midfielders and would be a good trial run.

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

Well the data is readily available. I wouldn't make the game too complicated but I would like an odd rule change that evens the game up. Maybe CBI's would become to defenders what save pts are to keepers. That could work.

Definitely. And I think it's mainly because defenders are largely only ever one kick away from a bad pick. See above.

For me the issue is that players become massively mispriced as the market cannot react appropriately to productivity. Many will think price moves are too fast but I think that misses the point as there is a bubble mentality to individual player pricing.
Maybe review quarterly and adjust? lol

I wouldn't want to see the game evened up between different positions - the important thing is that points and prices are fair within each of the four position categories. Bonus points and save points have already been improved so that defenders and goalkeepers now get their fair share, and that's good enough for me (although the BPS should probably be tweaked to give less reward to teams that make excessive numbers of safe passes within their own half - possession is too overrated).

And what about players who are classified as defenders but actually play out of position as attacking midfielders? Are these the ones that you want to see as captaincy contenders?

Actually, you could do a lot worse than captaining Alonso regularly even under the present system (for consistency rather than explosiveness apart from his 21-pointer) - only Sanchez has scored more points per match.

Not a bad move necessarily but three attackers from one side is overkill for me, especially given that the Spurs defence is also one of the best in the league and somewhat warrants investment.

How would you feel about moving Hazard to a Tom Carroll-like fifth midfielder and upgrading your third striker, assuming you're 3-5-2 right now?

Eeesh. Don't feel comfortable with a MF of Sanchez Alli Phillips Stanislas Carroll. Feels a little too weak.

I completely understand. If you did Hazard to someone like Snodgrass, Zaha or Mirallas could you still afford Crouch to Lukaku? Have a playing front eight could be a good differential right now to navigate the blanks for Sánchez & Ibrahimovic.

Even though I have Haz, I have those 3 too because as long as they keep scoring 2+ a game then we're in business. Must admit I gulped a little when Alli shoved Otamendi, thought it was Yacob II.

Still got Origi do I take out for a hit only got 9.1m?

    A) Giroud
    B) Benteke
    C) keep sell next week

Origi has looked pretty bad... seems to be third choice striker again, after Firmino and Sturridge. So, yeah, I'd remove him, even for a hit.

Problem is that both your option have problems. Benteke is nailed but has been struggling, Giroud has been doing well but might still lose his place soon.

I'd go with Giroud and hope he pays you back before the blanks.

Yeah. I have Stanislas, Phillips, McAuley, Baines and Holgate already. I am shipping Lallana this weekend but I am between Antonio (for this reason) or Eriksen (better overall pick). Then I need to find another few players between now and then and I will be sorted. Maybe Randolph in for Pickford.

I have a 134 point gap to close with the league leader of my work ML. He has already used TC and 2nd wildcard so GW26 and 28 will be crucial for me.

If neither Manchester team wins then there is a possibility both lose = gw26 game. Then there won't be that uncertainty you are indicating by using 'unless' in your post.

Best move here?? Two free transfers and nothing in the bank. Team for the week:

Lallana and Giroud -> Snodgrass and Lukaku

    Heaton
    Jones / Baines / Brunt / Rose
    Phillips / Sanchez (c) / Alli
    Giroud / Ibra / Costa

Grant; Lallana / Chambers / De Roon

Keep Giroud for a week and just do the Lallana move? Also consider the returning Zaha who has a flurry of green fixtures and Mirallas at £6.1m with similarly good fixtures, no blanks and playing off Lukaku in Koeman's 3-5-2.

(4 of the same mids as me too!)

I would look at shipping out Lallana if he blanks again. (i made a schoolboy error and bought in J.Rod for Lallana the other day.

Crazy, no doubt. I have a tendency to be hesitant on Giroud. He's bound to get hurt and miss a few weeks. Buy low, sell high kind of thing. Plus, it would be a move to free up space for Kane. Also have Ibra.

Should I swap Lallana to Antonio, or go for one of Zaha or Mirallas to save the funds for Giroud -> Lukaku next week. Currently thinking Zaha.

Their family/friends? There was this unknown Watford guy earlier in the season who scored a brace in the early kick-off. One of his family members had triple captain on him that GW.

Yes. It won't be right now. I have 35.6m sat on the bench for GW26 as it stands. I need to sell one of them and bring somebody else in.

I think last 2 league games he has been poor, and the team in general for that matter. I didn't watch the cup match but apparently he was poor in that too (again, as was the whole team).

Not sure about the rest of you but I'm struggling to know what to do re formation. Have been 3-4-3 all season (every season) and my next trade choice could swing it to 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 as well.
Who else is in this predicament?

    1. Netley Lucas
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

The key to 3-5-2 over 3-4-3 is simple, can you get a better 5th than Defoe (or Andy Carroll)? It's not easy tbh and although I think I have, I have suffered lol

      1. ILOVEBAPS
        • 13 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

Exactly. I have Defoe who I got for 7.1
If I went Barnes I could get about 7.5m for a 5th mid.
So then it becomes who is the best points per player for 7-8million?

    2. The Big Fella
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

I have been 352 this season and I am debating bringing in Coleman which will mean a possible 352/442 headache every week.

      1. ILOVEBAPS
        • 13 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

If your 5th mid is pretty cheap (Stan/Zaha/Phillips) you can then plump for a better 4th defender and play fixtures more. Could be many lost bench points however BUT during these topsy turvy GWs it could work out well having a stronger bench.

Behind the curve here also. Still haven't been swayed to go with only 2 strikers. With Kane Ibra Costa Giroud Lukaku as options, going to ride with 3.

My change from 3-5-2 to 3-4-3 hasn't worked out. I will probably still stay 3-4-3 though.

I was 3-4-3 for the first few games, then switched to 3-5-2 when the lure of a Sanchez-Hazard-double Liverpool-budget midfield was too much. It was then modified to bring in Alli and Sigurdsson but stayed with 3-5-2, and it was with this formation that I've been the most successful.

However, this week I've switched back to 3-4-3. Kane, Ibra and Costa upfront, Sanchez, Alli, Lallana, Phillips midfield. In my opinion unless you have 3 big hitters up front it's not worth it going 3-4-3 this season. (I count Defoe as a big hitter too btw!)

    6. _Freddo

I've just switched to 442, looks amazing strong tbh and feels like it's the right time for it.

There's 5 or 6 defenders who could do very well in the period in an around GW28, Rose, Walker, Baines, Coleman, Alonso, Brunt who are more or less mids now, even Azpiliqueta, Bellerin, Valencia could prove to be big scorers in the next few weeks.

So much affordable choice just like there was in midfield a couple of months ago that people tapped in to.

If you go without Kane or Costa due to only playing 2 strikers than a double Chelsea or double Spurs defense is easily achieveable to help counter it.
