A day notable, in the main, for fortuitous goals and returns.

It began with Alexis Sanchez breaking the hearts of the 75,000 who had jettisoned him early ahead of the Gameweek 26 blank. Notching his first via a gloved hand, the next arrived in stoppage time – his second at the death penalty in the space of four Gameweeks.

With referee Mark Clattenburg reportedly admitting, on review at half-time, that the opening goal was handled, the Sanchez returns will be a particularly bitter pill to swallow for his non-owners.

But arguably Sanchez makes his own luck. Once again he was Arsenal’s bright spark in a performance that was otherwise laboured and lacklustre.

The Chilean could and should have scored earlier and, over his 90 minutes, recorded six efforts on goal.

In his last four Emirates matches, he’s provided a total of 31 efforts – in each of those Gameweeks he’s registered more attempts than any other player. Quite simply, he is untouchable as a source of pure goal threat.

If you don’t own Sanchez, he rarely makes for pleasant viewing.

Similarly, at least among defenders, West Brom’s Gareth McAuley is arguably peerless as a threat to opponents.

Going into the trip to the London Stadium, the centre-back had converted four of his five headers on target into goals – all had direct arrived from corners.

Today he made it five, although it could hardly have been a more fortuitous effort.

Taking up his customary position inside the box for a late Chris Brunt corner, it was adjudged that McAuley got the last touch on Jonny Evans header.

In fairness, the goal was immediately chalked up as his when it arrived via Opta. In real-time his touch seemed indiscernible and yet it was a decision later reviewed and upheld by the Premier League Match Centre.

McAuley had wheeled away to celebrate and, as the last West Brom player to get a touch, the goal was credited as his fifth of the season – again from a corner.

Like Sanchez, McAuley is an asset that, perhaps through endeavour, fortune has favoured this season.

Coming alive at set-pieces, he has delivered reliably when the Baggies defence gives way.

Just as Sanchez’ energy and raw goal threat almost inevitably brings reward by the whistle, so McAuley’s mere presence in the box on the end of deliveries from Matt Phillips or Brunt, has delivered unexpected points; no more unexpected than today’s.

Some Fantasy managers will have benefited from both these lucky charms but, given the statistics in their name to this point, clearly both Sanchez and McAuley have been buying lottery tickets all season. Today their numbers came up.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

2 free transfers but I can field this team by benching Ibra and Sanchez, and every player is at home

    Jaku
    McAuley Azpi Holgate Walker
    Phillips Alli Zaha Fletcher
    Costa Lukaku

Are there any transfers worth doing? Appreciate Holgate isn't likely to start so maybe just him?

Worth saving for a week then? Really want Mane in early doors for his inevitable price rise. Would have to be for Sanchez or I'd be using both free transfers to afford...

Again. Wait for the FA Cup results.

If Burnley get knocked out, get Mane.
If Chelsea get knocked out, consider Hazard.

McAuley is a better option than Brunt in terms of goal threat. I think people love Brunt more around here because they see him as a midfielder playing in defence. The reality is he is now a left back first, midfielder second.

Yeah i see what you are saying about people who play the Team value game, but they are very shrewd & go for players likely to double price rise.
They would be shrewd enough to see gabidianni have no fixtures so dont think they would chase a 0.1.

I wouldn't be so sure. They're daft enough to be playing a stupid team value game in the first place, so who knows how daft they are altogether 😉

I mean the kind of people on the Status Page near the bottom under "Most Valuable Teams".

They aren't playing for points. They're playing for value alone.

What's a shame is things like this affect it for people playing the game how it's supposed to be. This very article starts by talking about all the Sanchez sellers being disappointed. Actually quite a few probably aren't because they're not even interested in FPL points 🙂

    Cech Grant
    Baines Walker Alonso McAuley Amat

    A) Mkhi & Phillips to Barkley & Siggy

My argument is they actually shouldn't. Like you said a mundane game - why do 6 players deserve extra points? I don't like the system.

Yeah, maybe there needs to be a minimum BPS they have to hit, otherwise risk getting no baps at all.

Zoomed in, slow motion replay of the WBA goal on the MOTD shows that it's an Evans goal without a doubt. Open and shut case.

It's absolutely ridiculous that FPL can't overturn an obviously wrong call made by OPTA and that useless, blindfolded match center thingie.

Leaves a very bitter taste this scandal.

How was Everton game? Should I be disappointed by 'only' 13 points from my two attacking full backs?

Saw the McAuley goal on the FPL app without knowing circumstances (even more jammy as he's on my bench and being subbed on for a non-playing Holgate) and then watched MOTD. Had to rewind the highlights because I'd only seen a Chadli and an Evans goal and wondered what the hell was going on!

It's one of the most bizzare things I've seen. It's an Evans goal. Simple as that.

Exactly. If it were a defenders 'touch' instead of McAuley it wouldnt be an OG, easy decision

You brought him in last season? He started slow but he ended up being pretty steady second half of the season. I think he'll be good if he stays at Newcastle next season (and they promote)

Possibly, he's been a bit less influential than he was for Leicester a few years back. Hard to judge Championship attackers too.

Gayle I think will be a great option at Newcastle though.

    Which would you rather have

    1) Sell Ibra for Lukaku. Captain him in 26. Captsin Jesus (sun) or Siggy (BUR) in GW27

    2) Sell Sanchez and keep Ibra to captain in 27 (BOU), let Lukaku go til GW28

As much as having Zlatan for GW27 seems tasty, I'm not sure the points can't be covered easily and then some with choice 1

Crazy isn't it. I was talking last week about assists. How it's crazy that Costa got the assist for the Hazard goal. Lukaku didn't get one for the McCarthy goal. This week it's Brunt not getting one for the Evans/McAuley goal. Fine margins in FPL.

To be honest I take FPL seriously enough to spend my evenings thinking about it and producing content for it but when it comes to things like this I couldnt be less arsed. Anyone who knows me irl would tell you im pretty laid back. Actually annoys my missus! 🙂

On first view i thought it was Evans. After a few more angles I can see why its been looked at. After that Im not arsed about the decision, cant see the reason to worry about it

    A) Sanchez to Hazard/Mane
    B) Ibra to Costa

    Ibra Lukaku Rondon
