We’re left punctured and deflated like that old plastic ball you used to kick over the fence into the neighbour’s garden.

That neighbour is Pep Guardiola, who appears to take great pleasure in putting his big teamsheet tinkering garden fork through our bouncy double Gameweek dreams.

Recorded in the dying stages of Manchester City’s non-event clash against a stubborn Stoke, Jonty, Andy and myself are left rather flat during this episode of the ScoutCast.

Even the most imaginative accountant couldn’t hide the fact that, after transfer hits aplenty and having witnessed Messrs Kane, Costa, Hazard and Lukaku grab hauls, all three of us depart Gameweek 27 in the red.

Gathering ourselves after that disappointment, and steered by your questions, we nonetheless press on to offer our latest musings on the minefield of blanks presented by Gameweek 28, while checking in on Sanchez’ fading star and third striker options.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Wednesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link or the first player below, or take in the full visual experience, pastry and all, via the second player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm currently missing 3 if you switch Costa > Lukaku. SpursMid, Sanchez and Gabbi. I do have Kun though so a downgrade to Gabbi will possibly enable me to afford the other 2.

    I have 6 players for GW28.

    Selling Stanislas + Eriksen + Sterling for a -8pt

    Option A/ Mane + Lanzini + Fraser + 0.4M

    Option B/ Coutinho + Lanzini + King + 1.1M

Finally, anyone getting interesting in Grosicki (Hull)? on corners and has a decent amount of efforts on goals. Also a decent history of scoring/assisting for club and country.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    When to wildcard

I suspect there will be quite a few wildcards thrown around this weekend once people see how low their GWK 28 player numbers are.

But savvy managers are set to wait until we discover more about the impending double gameweeks.

Given GWK 37 is likely to be a bumper DGWK is GWK 36 the best time to wildcard.

Or are you looking to wildcard earlier when other doubles are announced?

Is wildcarding GWK 29 a smart move – as those with GWK 28 fixtures such as WBA and Everton start to see a change in their fixtures?

    Anyone wildcarding this weekend?

There were lots of questions on this for the scoutcast, but we ran out of time sadly.

For me I'm keen on the DGWK 37 bench boost so will be aiming for a GWK 36 wildcard.

Going for GW29 WC. With 3 everton and 3 WBA and a bit of deadwood my team just isnt good enough to fix with transfers. Im going to WC in 29, get mainly DGWrs (proviosonal WC team on Twitter) and go from there. Can use transfers to move doublers around and maximise output for BB 37

34 for me, 36 is a bit too late. there isnt as much of a risk as there was last season as the inform teams have the dgw's whereas last year we all ditched our spurs/leicester assets

Triggerlips wrote an interesting blog this week about how preparing early can be costly. In GWK 36 we have maximum knowledge about GWK 37...alot can change in a few GWKS.

A lot can happen in one gameweek. Given we will need lots of big hitters for 37 there will need to be a few punts in the 36 wildcard. People got caught out by last season with the likes of Gabriel, Fosu-Mensah, Liverpool mids etc.

I'll probably focus my FTs on teams With an extra DGW (Southampton, mun, arsenal) to try to get a few good options for their first dgw, then wildcard for the big DGW.

I will take no decision on the matter before we have more information on the scheduling of matches.

I'm looking at wildcarding once the double gameweek fixtures are announced. We all know we will need the big hitters for gameweek 37 anyway so may as well get them in now.

Spurs fixtures look great. I'm also planning on taking advantage of my team value over my mini league rivals. pricing them out by getting the expensive heavy hitters in. If I wait until game week 36 it only gives me 3 weeks of making use of these more expensive players.

I'm also trailing so will have to make a move soon lol

Gw 36 wildcard and gw 37 bench boost here, hoping for a miracle. If you wildcard for the earlier DGW you might be stuck with a team well set up for the dgw but not for the last 6-7 gameweeks. Wildcard gw 36 and set it up nicely for gw 37 and just roll out gw 38 imo

Yes the plan is Kane back for Ibra next week, Phillips out for Pedro, then sit on my hands using FT's until GW36.

A well used wildcard can still claw back a 100 point deficit. I did it last year in my ML on the DGW. The following week my rival in sheer desperation made a 32 point hit! I knew I had him lol.

A lot still have their TC chip to use as well remember. Many won't even get the 9 points off Aguero that most of us had with it. Still plenty to play for.

Wild card this week and have 4 DGW players on the bench and use FTs to get up to a full 11 in 37 which is 9 weeks away. Season could be over by GW37, seems a gamble to wait until then and not sure why the blank isn't seen as an opportunity when so many won't have a full 11 plus lots of hits flying around

The short answer is "when it gives best advantage to your squad".

The longer answer is that many managers still have an incorrect and somewhat fantastical view about the chips. BB really isn't that big of a deal. The 2nd wildcard, however, IS a big deal. The wildcards are by far the most valuable chips we have.

To reduce the 2nd wildcard to being nothing more than a set-up device for a chip (BB) that really isn't worth that much anyway is therefore a big strategic mistake. You remove virtually all strategic benefit from it by deploying it as late as GW36. But that strategic (long-term) benefit is its great power.

Lots of managers will use anecdotal data based on "how well I did last season" to reaffirm their mistake. Of course a lot of people scored high that week. It was a DGW!! And of course they beat the average, they used the BB (and you will get a small jump from playing it whenever you so do). And they used the 2nd wildcard as a set up. If you don't score well from that - IN THAT ONE GAMEWEEK - then something is badly wrong.

But many of those same managers conveniently ignore the poor weeks beforehand when their team needed re-shaping but they held the wildcard, the hits they were forced to take both earlier and after the BB, the damage they caused the week before by wildcarding a week in advance, the short team they fielded in (this season) GW28 and so on. Many of them (not all but many) gave back most or all of what they gained in that one big week one way or another. Both before and after.

It's a fixation. Use the wildcard when it best serves, consider it in its own right, de-couple it in your thinking from any other chip. That's the best advice. And then use the BB and the TC when you best can. A lot of people have already used their TC now (I didn't but that's incidental). For them a GW34 wildcard to get a perfect DGW34 team and shape into a BB in GW37 is obviously going to be a valid idea. Or use it earlier if it suits better (personally I expect to wildcard in GW30). But not GW36. Really not. That's probably the weakest option of them all.

I really don't understand the GW36 WC in this context as you correctly point out there is no long term benefit in using it that late. Indeed, my ML leader used his in January and is now cruising in the top 10K because of a well played wildcard. I think most live under the false impression of getting a huge jump in a DGW when in reality most of the active managers will have the same players and the same captain, so your wildcard is really only worth the hits taken to get to that team during the double

There are many valid options, all with pros and cons. Whichever works is largely down to luck, no matter how much we kid ourselves otherwise 🙂 You give a compelling argument to why a GW36 WC won't work, but it did work last year, so is proof it can work and shouldn't just be discarded.

But I agree, if your team looks poor - don't be stubborn and hold out on playing your WC if you have already got a GW36 in your head - just use the darn thing! Flexibility is always key in FPL 🙂

It didn't work last year, Jarvish. Only for people that got it bang on and they were relatively few. The majority that did less well made (and make) less noise about it is all.

Anyway, I have no desire to tell people when to wildcard. Just to set something against the common view that GW36/7 WC/BB is the best strategy. It's very debatable whether that is actually true.

I'm not sure - I know a few people who did a GW36WC last year (as we were a bit of a cult), and I don't recall it not working out for any of us, and I don't see many on here saying it didn't work out, whereas I see a lot saying the GW33WC didn't work out for them last season. This may just be that sample size was much bigger though admittedly.

I agree though GW36WC this season isn't nailed as the best strategy for this season - but it is a strategy with pros and cons like every other WC strategy that could work and could fail, like every other strategy.

Last season the GW36/37 WC/BB was much better than the GW33/34 WC/BB in most cases, that's true. But it's also no precedent, one of the reasons it won out was because managers that used TC in GW34 on Aguero/Sanchez got 26 or 25 points for it whereas those that used it in GW37 didn't do so well.

But that's one season. Who's to say that the GW37 TC won't be better this time? There's a lot of luck involved in things like that. And even when it works out (as you say it did last year), compared to what? Did anyone make a real comparison that took all the earlier hits and performance in previous weeks into account?

I don't think you can assess the use of the wildcard on how you do in one week. I my view, if you are holding the wildcard now you should be looking at how to do best in the last 11 weeks of the season. Overall. Why should I care if people make 18 points on me in GW37 if I have taken 28 points out of them from GW30-36?

Anyway, we don't have the fixture details yet and probably won't till GW30. My point isn't to say when is best to wildcard. It's only to say that it should be de-coupled from any other chip when you think about how to get the best benefit from it.

I agree. Also: you already know how many and which matches team still have left, which is what matters for your WC. The timing of DGW matters for the other chips, but why for the WC? If 37 will be such a 'massive' DGW, that means finding 15 players with doubles should be easy anyway.

So in summary, you are saying pretty much the same as the last paragraph of my last post:

".... the GW36WC this season isn't nailed as the best strategy for this season - but it is a strategy with pros and cons like every other WC strategy that could work and could fail, like every other strategy."

No, what I'm saying is "de-couple the 2nd wildcard from the BB. Use the 2nd wildcard for what it is - the most powerful tool you have in the 2nd half of the season".

If you think that means GW36, please feel free. 🙂 I don't wish to tell anyone how to manage their team.

Yeah sure, but I have planned and assessed that my team can be strong enough to reach GW36 without a WC without too much of a negative impact, whilst in the knowledge that I can pull the trigger on the WC earlier if needs be.

I would like to think people haven't blindly said "I'm going to WC GW36 and BB37 whatever happens" without doing this assessment. If they have (and they haven't read your warning), they probably are indeed going to be in for a ratings meltdown in the long-term 🙂

Logic and reasoning. No-one has the numbers. My point was only that those that do well tend to talk about it and those that don't tend not to. So the anecdotal stuff isn't worth much.

Not sure it is logic and reasoning rather than a personal view. As you say, no one has numbers so logic is out of the question as far as analysis of the chips is concerned. Or we could ask Mark to dig up the info from the FPL Towers as an inside-job now that he is in there.

One of the big reasons it didn't work last year is you wc with the intention of getting the most points possible between then and the end of the season. Without knowing exactly how players will score in any given gw one of the ways to do this is by selecting a squad full with the maximum number of games between then and the end of the season.

Last season this meant dripping a number of single gw options from teams like Leicester and spurs for players from teams with nice fixtures AND a double gw or two.

As you correctly say the tc can be lucky any time it is played but having a squad jam packed with double gw players to maximise the BB chip can lead to much sub optimal team for the weeks preceding and proceeding this double gw.

This is the main reason people want to wait for one big gamble on the double gw wc in gw36.

An excellent, considered post, Ruth. It speaks volumes to me not only because of the valid points you made with regards to a positive effect on Overall Rank over a number of weeks; but also because of the positive impact of a wildcard over successive weeks on a purely week by week basis.

I.e. I now consider myself too far back from my mini league rivals in the points league to be able to catch them. However, I'm within 9 points of the leader in our H2H league. Therefore, with a focus on purely the H2H league, it makes far more sense to Wildcard earlier, and hopefully enjoy the benefit of an increased score over 6-8 weeks; than to wildcard in 36 and bb in 37, which would only increase my chances of a h2h win in 2-3 gameweeks. May be something to consider for those like me who are willing to sacrifice OR in favour of ML strategy!

this is the single best post on the forum this season

as a keen mini league player, I'm in the position where the guy ahead of me has a 70 point lead but has now used both wildcard and triple captain.

I don't think I can wait until 36 to wild it, if I matched him for the next 8 weeks he could likely just a twenty point hit to get 15 out anyway, with room to spare with his lead

I'll be looking at using it as soon as all doubles are announced, hoping to get vital points back before one final, desperate hail Mary.

Might go earlier in GW32 or something.

There are likely to be at least 7/8 players I want for 37 that I currently don't have and would also benefit my team between now and then (thinking Spurs, Man Utd and Arsenal in particular).

So waiting until 36 to wildcard might cause me to miss out on valuable points in the few weeks up until then.

Couldn't think of a bigger waste of the second wildcard than waiting for gw36.

It would be like benching Sanchez at Anfield and bringing him on at half time when you're two nil down. Very effective but not if you leave it too late.

Probably GW31 if the DGW is confirmed for GW32. GW36 seems a bit too late to WC and vital points could be gained easily prior to that..but will try to get 15 double GW players to maximize on bench boost for gw37!

Thinking of gw30. Mainly because i have a full XI this week and no Spurs at all. Will be able to get Sanchez, Gabbi, Costa, Valencia too. One of Boro or Watford should have a dgw34 so could get 3 of them and use FTs to get rid of them between 35-37 for 37 doublers, still getting 15 for BB

To use the WC in 36 to get maybe an extra 10 points from BB in 37 is a massive trap.

WC is by far the most valuable chip. I used mine in gw21 when I was 624k. I am now 101k with 11 players on a -8 for this weekend. Generally the earlier it is used the more value you get from it.

Looking at the players we own and the shift in fixtures it is quite obvious gw30 is the week to use it for those who still have it.

This is really simple for me.....

Get this weekend's FA Cup matches out of the way first so we know which teams are due to play FA Cup games in GW34 and so cannot have a DGW34.

It is then much easier to visualise for which teams it will be possible to have a DGW34 and which ones DGW37.

Over the next 6 GW's you then need to work to get in as many DGW34 players in for free, and then post DGW34 wildcard in readiness for DGW37.

Heaton (Pickford) - Baines Funes Mori McAuley (Maguire Amat) - Mane Sterling Siggy King (De Roon) - Kane Lukaku Llorente which is not ideal but fine, so I'm waiting with the wildcard for GW36

I am pressing the button tomorrow (before the deadline) with a couple of placeholders for big hitters. Yeah, I know, at least a week earlier than everyone else.

I think an early WC will, if played well and lady luck is with you, will earn you more points over the subsequent weeks than if you bet it all on one gameweek (i.e. GW37). I expect to have all of the key GW37 players anyway in order to maximise the bench boost.

If I had my WC then GW 30 would be the optimal time. You've got 2 weeks of international break to take advantage of price movement and you can draft in as many DGWers as you need. For teams not in Europe their pending games are more likely to be played earlier in GW 32 - 36. You have enough time to plan to put out 15 DGWers for 37 BB while retaining form/ fixtures coverage between them. By 1st April all the information regarding DGWs will be available and then the only variables remaining will be form and injury which is hardly in control for a GW 36 wild card either.

        GW 30: minimum 8 DGW
        GW 31: bank
        GW 32: 1 transfer
        GW 33: 1 transfer
        GW 34: 1 transfer
        GW 35: 1 transfer
        GW 36: 1 transfer
        GW 37: 2 transfers (BB)

Enough flexibility plus coverage of Liverpool, Everton, Swansea and West Ham assets. The 8 initial DGW players are most likely to be in your squad any case with Sanchez, Kane, Hazard, Ibra, Walker already in most teams. Moving early helps you capture price movements as well.

Even for a team that has played their WC already and with only 4 DGW players in GW 28 the disadvantage is probably 2 hits so saving right upto tGW 36 doesn't make too much sense.

I think wildcarding in GW36 is too late for me. I'll probably wildcard before GW30, and just look at what teams still have most matches to play, especially avoiding those that play their 28th match this weekend (maybe exceptions for Siggy / a Liverpool mid). I don't need to know when exactly they'll get their DGW when I WC.

When to WC is a very personal thing, depending on the current make-up of our teams.

For some it is best now, for some the week after and so on.

Also, there are horror stories every season of the season/team wrecked by using WC just because it was available to be played and trying to be too different to the crowd by looking at fixtures. I did this with Kane the last season winter-WC rules were in place, had to get him back after a month with tail between my legs.

There are a lot of unknowns, but one thing 'almost' for sure is that if you use it around your other chips, you do gain a benefit, only thing is, you don't know if the advantage is large or small when evaluated against other weeks.

Best strategy at present is probably to wait for DGW news. Let us revisit this topic then.

I'd really like to encentuate Ruth_NZ's post above.

This year, there really has seemed to be this idea that the Wildcard + BB is limited to being used in GW 36. Actually to the point where, when I first considered using my wildcard a few weeks ago, I didn't want to post it anywhere for fear that I would be shot down in flames.

Since I used my WC back in GW 26, I have had 2 successive green arrows (rising from 205,000 - 115,000), I have shifted a lot of deadwood who I knew would let me down (Phillips, Benteke, Baines, Sancez/Ibra due to the blanks). Similarly, I brought in players that I knew would do well (Kane, Mane, Lukaku etc.). I would estimate that over these 2 weeks, I'm about 50-60 points better off than if I hadn't wildcarded. Plus i'm in an excellent position for the blanks, with 10 players and the saving of my FT.

My point isn't to gloat (well it is a little). My point is that if your team is in need of dire surgery, as Ruth suggested, you really should consider playing the card. There's no point in not playing it, losing out on 100 points over 10 gameweeks and then playing it with the BB to gain 20-30 points. It's madness. We are good fantasy managers because we plan ahead. Strategic use of the wildcard now will let us refresh our squads and still look ahead to future double game weeks.

To me, the best time to play it was a few weeks ago. Not helpful for a lot of you - but it does show how if you look at your squad (as I did) with feelings of sadness and desperation, the wildcard can give your whole season a lift.

You should have done Scoutcast mate, many have used their WC so it would be good to see a different perspective.

I was asked to step in last minute, but I was already at the pub.
Shame, would have loved to have been on for this very reason!

Az, I almost completely agree with you 🙂

I don't agree with the "best time to play it was a few weeks ago". The best time to play it is very much dependant on your team. I already owned or got in the players that have done well recently, so a WC would have given me little or no value playing it a few weeks ago. Others have made huge gains playing it many weeks ago (See FFPro above).

For those with teams that have a full XI (or close to) playing this weekend, there looks like a really nice fixture swing in GW30. We know which teams have a DGW and even 2 DGWs in the future (and some may be sooner than we think), so GW30 looks a very good time to WC to maximise the DGWs, get rid of deadwood from the blanks, and strengthen the team short term too. Even better if we know more about the DGWs. It may even mean activating the WC not straight away in between GWs. All this could well be worth significantly more than the WC36/BB37 scenario.

Basically, I very much echo what Ruth_NZ is saying.

Yes this is true, it is very much team dependant. Right for me doesn't necessarily mean right for others. I was just surprised that more people didn't consider it withnth blanks doubles injuries and non-starters we all had.

As a few others have said on here too, the WC is a personal chip and should be treated as such.

When your team needs it, it really is as simple as that for me. If you have lots of deadwood to get rid of, use it. All this planning ahead means you lose potential points elsewhere, how many managers (including myself) have amat needed this week where he's not going to play. I may well WC next week and set myself, have plenty of free transfers to react accordingly

I am wildcarding this weekend against popular advice here. I had the ability to put a team out with 7-8 players with a hit. However there were many in that team that I did not want (e.g. WBA assets). I will now have 10 players that I want and 5 players on the bench with future DGWs, including 3 Spurs. Will gradually move out SWA assets for DGW players. So effectively I am going in this week with no hits and a proper team of 10, and well set up until GW33.

Last season I used it a few weeks before the first big DGW when it was clear what the fixtures were. It meant that I was able to have a better team earlier, planned my transfers for the DGW and blank. In the end I was able to save 2FTs for the DGW to cover any injuries or people coming into form. This approach also made me far more wary of shipping in form players who had a SGW.

I did well in the DGW with bench boost, but I was also able to gain OR in the weeks leading up to the DGW.

One minor consideration with an 'early' WC.

Most of us normally see bench players as cheapies in order to maximise our best 11. In DGWs we won't want our normal bench players eg Capoue etc. We'll try for better and inevitably pricier extra players. This means the average price and consequently quality of the initial 11 will decrease. This might mean only one of Sanchez and Hazard for example.

An early WC with the later DGWs in mind might lead to fielding a cheaper/worse 11 each week leading up to the DGW due to the squad being prepared for 15 effective players rather than 11 + 4 cheapies

What an excellent discussion - and one where I think my mind may have been changed.

I was all set to do gwk 36 wc for gwk 37 BB. A key factor in this now is that I'm fine for this wk with a full XI and have firm transfer plans over the next few that fit into the dgwk narrative to come ( eg Kane and gabbiadini in) .

But once I know the dgwk teams it does make sense to load up early.

Although that should only be if the usual rules apply - are their fixtures strong and are they in form?

There will be other dgwks outside of gwk 37 so it makes sense to use a wildcard that factors all of them in.

So depending on announcements over the next few gwks it may well be that my mind has been changed.

A victory for reasoned debate 🙂

Agreed. Definitely some food for thought. I don't think there is a "one size fits all" answer on when to WC. It depends on the fixtures and what state your team is in.

This site is great. This is my first season on here and first season taking FPL a little bit more seriously (despite being a football fanatic) and loving the banter!
I was thinking along the same lines as Ruth, as in why leave it so late to use such a valuable tool. It seemed to me that almost everyone on here was leaving it until just before the last DGW. So I almost got brainwashed into that mindset haha.
My plan is to look at a wildcard every week from 29 onwards, weigh up the pros and cons and when I feel it best suits my team pull the trigger. If I can hold it until 36 well and good but I feel that there will be a more optimal time to play the chip to suit my team.Great discussion on this hot topic, cheers Jonty and all here on FFS (especially the DZ as I'm living in Shanghai)!

I plan on using my WC during international break for GW30.

Looking at the fixtures there are a lot of teams who have home matches GW30/31 like utd/southampton/leicester who also have DGWs later on!
Plus i can sell all my everton & west brom players & josh king/holebas all in one go!
I can fill my team with a say 11/12 DGW players then just use transfers to get it to 15 by time GW37 is around. I want to keep SGW players likes of siggy/mane for now

Leaving it until 36 doesnt make sense for me when with the players i have in my team means i just fall further behind.

Looks like it'll be a -12 for me this GW with Philips not playing.. Think it's worth 1 more hit to get a player rather than take a 0, especially as it means getting Phillips out.

Best replacement? Other mids are Firm - Coutinho - Siggy - Lanzini.. Preferably someone decent but cheap, King?
