A single goal from an unlikely source takes Chelsea into the FA Cup semi-finals following a feisty match with Manchester United.

Chelsea 1 Manchester United 0

N’Golo Kante’s fine strike was enough to see off a battling Manchester United who played much of a compelling encounter with ten men.

The Chelsea midfielder, who was set up by Willian, steered home a shot from outside the box after the break.

The goal had an air of inevitability about it – the Blues out-shot their visitors by 20 to four and enjoyed 73% possession – but much of that dominance arose after Ander Herrera was sent off for a second yellow card.

The actual foul that led to the Spaniard’s dismissal was almost nondescript, but he was essentially paying for the sins of a team who had spent the first-half targeting Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard.

Herrera will now miss the next two league matches against Middlesbrough and West Brom – this was his second sending-off of the season – although that will have little Fantasy impact as the midfielder is owned by just 0.7%.

United’s task was always going to be a tough one. Without the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Jose Mourinho looked like having to cobble together a side shorn of any recognised forward at all until Marcus Rashford, who had been ill, declared himself fit enough to play.

The young England forward acquitted himself well but will rue seeing the one clear chance he had saved by the otherwise under-employed Thibaut Courtois.

Having trialled a back three in the Europa League draw with Rostov, Mourinho was expected to roll out the same formation at Stamford Bridge, only to demonstrate his squad’s flexibility by reverting to a back four.

Phil Jones was again in the starting XI but deployed in a holding midfield role, charged mainly with attempting to diffuse the threat from Hazard. It remains to be seen if Mourinho persists with this ploy: it seems likely that Jones will now revert to a central defensive role.

At 4.7, Jones represents the cheapest of United regular starters in defence, and could capitalise on an immediate schedule that involves Middlesbrough, West Brom, Everton and Sunderland, with the toughest of those matches, Everton, taking place at Old Trafford.

The case for Jones would be strengthened further still if Marcos Rojo is cited for what appeared to be a stamp on Diego Costa, with whom he had a running battle all evening.

Rashford (6.4) also looks good for further starts as Ibrahimovic will miss the next two league matches and Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial are struggling to overcome the injuries that forced them out of last night’s clash. Certainly, for the clashes with Boro and West Brom, Rashford could offer a short-term differential.

For Chelsea, Pedro’s position as an unused sub in last night’s match could raise mild concern for his growing band of 9% FPL owners. The Spaniard is the fourth most transferred in midfielder since last weekend, having provided two goals and a pair of assists in his last three, yet he resorted to bench-warming duties as Willian was preferred on the right of the front three instead. Nonetheless, Pedro will be expected to earn a recall at Stoke City in Gameweek 29.

Indeed, with Victor Moses forced off with a reported calf problem in the latter stages, both Pedro and Willian could be unleashed from the start at the bet365 this weekend if the Nigerian fails to make it; Pedro would be the likely deputy at right wing-back.

The all-Premier League semi-finals – Chelsea v Tottenham and Man City v Arsenal – will take place over the weekend of April 22 and 23 during Gameweek 34.

Man City could be in Champions League quarter-final action leading up to that weekend, but there looks to be scope for the Gameweek fixtures involving all four teams to be moved to the midweek after the FA Cup semi-finals.

Chelsea are due to entertain Southampton, Spurs are at Leicester, Arsenal are home to Sunderland and Man City host West Brom.

Chelsea XI: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Cahill, Moses (Zouma 89), Kante, Matic, Alonso, Willian (Fabregas 81), Costa (Batshuayi 90+4), Hazard.
Subs not used: Begovic, Pedro, Terry, Chalobah.

Man United XI: de Gea, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Valencia, Ander Herrera, Pogba, Darmian, Mkhitaryan (Fellaini 37), Rashford, Young (Lingard 81).
Subs not used: Romero, Bailly, Mata, Carrick, Blind.

In the last five GWs I've spent 36 points of transfers and halved my rank from 1.1m to 485k.

All cases are individual but hits can work, so don't be afraid.

Made a lot of hits for GW28 and got 30pts,my friend didnt took single hit and he had only 3 GW28 players(Lukaku(C),Mane,Siggy) and got more points than me with 10 players and Mane(C) 😀

Any changes to this WC team?

    DeGea Grant
    Alonso Coleman Davies Mawson Britos
    Sanchez Pedro Alli Siggy King
    Lukaku Deeney Gabbiadini

    4.5itb

    - Coleman to Valencia prior to the doubles
    - Davies to Rose when he returns
    - Grant useful for 31&33, prob out for dgw keeper after that
    - not getting carried away with just drafting dgwrs as Coleman, Mawson, Siggy, King and Lukaku are undeniably good on form players with decent fixtures.

    Any stone unturned? Thanks guys!

Ya read an article on Sky about the Hughes saying he won't rush him back in amd he's happy to have him available just. Maybe give him a few games at the end of the season. Think I'll risk it. Won't be the end of the world if I've to bring in Valdes or Pickford a week early, cheers though...

I am a Grant owner. He and Pickford rotate well until the end of the season. I didn't know Hughes had said that. After last time's set back and almost a full yer out, I had thought he won't be rushed back in.

You also, like me, seem to be going against conventional wisdom and not getting Liverpool mid. Maybe something to consider......

4.5 in the bank, I'm only 0.2 off to get him in for Gabbi or Deeney and he'll drop a 0.1 at the very least. Can make that work with King to DeRoon or Mawson to Boro/Sunderland/Southampton defender

If it does it does. Mawson has decent fixtures, he can step in in his place.
Can definitely downgrade King and get Rose in 2 transfers. I don't see Rose back in the next 3/4 gw's anyway, Davies is playing excellent, they won't rush him back for gw30, they're playing Burnley

Ibra is suspended for 2 games and Lukaku is captain this week. Gabbi benched this week and King starts. King will be Zaha most likely depending on form. Someone of that caliber anyway with a double

Oh. I like King for this week. The 4.5m itb will go a long way to whatever I want to do, I feel the setup is very flexible

    3. MTPockets
        8 years, 9 months ago

Nice but doesn't seem very wildcardy, or particularly setup for getting in future dgwers (eg. big guns Ibra, kane if fit, any man city for later run; or eg. peripherals to save later transfers Yosh, JWP, Jones, Coq).

        1. Pep says
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

I'm not gonna be blinded by these double gw's and just get a player in for the sake of 2 games in 1 week. Southampton are prone to rotation, JWP mightnt even start both fixtures. Britos is my Yoshida except he offers some attacking threat. Coquelin for Arsenal over King, no chance. A goal for King equal 2 appearances for Conquelin, what's the point

          1. MTPockets
              8 years, 9 months ago

You'll be playing/rotating King? Peripherals are assuming there's a BB being factored in some time. Otherwise I prefer to build future team & work backwards, but obviously up to you and that approach probably doesn't work doing it this early to be fair.

Have 8 fts to double gameweek 37 BB to get 15 players. Team includes 5 from Swansea, Everton and Bournemouth (who in any case have a good gw37 fixture if I don't get around to transferring them out).

I think a WC of 15 double gwrs is great but in reality, there's a good chance some of the hot picks will get rested, will be tired and have nothing to play for. And I think it's highly unlikely you will pick 15 players that return in both games. Some may even just earn an extra point.

The bench boost chip seems to be considered more important than the wildcard itself on here at times. I used my WC after reading the 'when to wc' hot topic and some of the points made is what led me to WC'ing now. Maybe I should have waited for the fixtures but my team needed surgery, I made 10 changes and now have a squad I like with 8fts to GW37 BB.

                1. MTPockets
                    8 years, 9 months ago

Replies are as much me thinking out loud than any critique. WC much more valuable than BB imo. Timing makes a big difference. Guess what I meant was if I wanted to play BB in gw37 and (hypothetically) picked this squad for it...

                    Caballero Cech
                    Vertonghen Stones Rojo Azpi Jones
                    Sane Pedro Walcott Alli Coq
                    Costa Kane Ibra

...that may be doable by working backwards up to a point. Whether that's a good idea today is a different matter. As is whether that's a good idea at all really - it's a bit 'coverage' etc. And spurs smashed dgwers last season, as well as this one.

                    1. Pep says

I'm only thinking out loud. I would however think that in the squad you just listed, Walcott, Pedro, Jones, Rojo, Stones and maybe even Sané are all definetly not going to start I both game in 37.

Anyway, my team was a mess, I couldn't bear another week of it. Thanks for the banter

And I've taken lessons from gw28. All that holding deadweight and ignoring other players form cause they were gonna miss 1 GW over the next 3 and all for a bunch a 1ptrs. So I'm not getting someone like Mata over Siggys or Jones over Mawson just because they will get an extra 2 appearance pts for a gameweek 6 or 9 weeks from now

One of the few times I genuinely think a -8 is worth it, see what you think:

          Kane > Gabbadiani
          Brunt > Valencia
          Sterling > Sanchez

Leaves me with a team of:

          Cech (Jaku)
          Baines Alonso Valencia (Yoshida, Nyom)
          Sanchez, Mane, Siggy, King (Carroll)
          Aguero, Lukaku, Gabbiadiani

Sets me up better for the forthcoming 3 fixtures at the very least, I think

My team in similar and I was thinking a -8 too bringing in Sanchez, Costa and Valencia. Only thing worrying me is the international break. I'm almost more inclined to save the trade as there is risk of injury to Valencia and Sanchez in the break.

Best Llorente replacement for up to 8m?

          A) Deeney (cpl, SUN, WBA)
          B) Gabbiadini (tot, BOU, CPL)
          C) Defoe (BUR, wat, lei)
          D) Keep Llorente

Want to replace Llorente to differentiate from ML rival.

I actually think Troy's fixtures and form is meriting a look - he's scoring home and away as well.
Gabbiadini I'm not interested in 'til after IB, when he might come in for Lukaku anyway.
          Defoe proven quality.

Any consensus on which is the best option?

Why don't past blank gameweeks show up on a player's history page any more?

If you look at Sanchez, it goes straight from GW25 to GW27, and you can't see how many transfers out he had in GW26 or GW28.

Hey mate, I'm thinking B is a good call, Sanchez I did think about but the inevitable international break scare will happen and tbh our fixtures aren't great til 31.

But Spurs (being non partisan) have everything to play for in the league and are out of Europe - I'm bringing Eriksen in this week I think (rival has Alli, otherwise I'd be bringing him in)

          Hi guys,
          Would you do Mane + Cout => Sanchez + Son/Pedro for a -4 ?
Other alternative would be Kun + Cout => Costa + Sanchez but I'd rather keep Kun for this week.

In a similar situation myself, trying to decide whether to ship Kun this week for Costa. I wouldn't lose Mane though, I'd probably do Kun and Cout to Costa and Sanchez like you said. Just tough to decide whether its worth a -4.

I'm considering bringing him IN, actually. I'm a fan of Eriksen and we've seen him perform well in the run in for previous seasons. Natural athlete so he tended to get a lot of goals/assists in the last few mins against more tired legs.
