One goal wins it and two injuries mar it – Manchester United’s progression to the Europa League quarter-finals involves mixed emotions.

Manchester United 1 Rostov 0 (2-1 on aggregate)

Juan Mata’s goal from a Zlatan Ibrahimovic flick was enough to see off a dogged Rostov who came mighty close to forcing extra-time in a nervy finale to what could be a costly match for the Red Devils.

Midfielder Paul Pogba limped off with a hamstring issue and defender Daley Blind also didn’t last the 90 minutes after suffering a head injury.

With fixtures, injuries and suspensions now piling up, United’s strong squad is starting to look stretched as the season prepares to reach its climax.

Mata’s winner came in the second half of a match in which Jose Mourinho’s men monopolised possession but did little with it. A late flurry from Rostov meant the sides finished with four shots on goal apiece and if it wasn’t for a couple of excellent late saves from Sergio Romero, the tie could have ended very differently indeed.

The injury to Pogba grabbed many of the headlines, with Mourinho gloomy post-match regarding the prospects of the Frenchman making a speedy return.

“I don’t know how long for sure. But there will be no Middlesbrough and no national team.”

The international break that follows Gameweek 29 could end up doing Mourinho a huge favour, allowing a number of his players the chance to recover before a hectic run-in involving 11 league matches and, potentially, a further five European ties.

Pogba is still owned by 8.3% of managers – many, presumably, in dead teams seeing as he’s done nothing of note in the league since a Gameweek 19 goal.

Regardless of his personal form, Pogba’s potential absence on Sunday against Middlesbrough will further stretch an already over-worked squad already without the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ander Herrera.

Throw in injuries to Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial and Mourinho doesn’t exactly have a wealth of attacking options at his disposal for the trip to the Riverside.

That will put extra pressure on Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mata to perform. Owned by 3.1% and 2.2% respectively, the pair could be worth considering as differentials as United embark on a four-match run involving Boro, West Brom, Everton and Sunderland.

Mkhitaryan, at 8.8, might be too pricey for some. Mata (7.2) is cheaper and has form on his side – his European winner was a tenth goal of the season and the Spaniard has six in the league, including two in his last three starts.

Marcus Rashford (6.4 and 4.1%) could be another to run the rule over, particularly for the two matches – Middlesbrough and West Brom – that Ibrahimovic will miss.

Mourinho made three changes to the side that drew in Rostov, again utilising three centre-halves and wing-backs as he did in Russia.

Phil Jones was rested, although he ended up replacing Blind, and looks a good value prospect in a defence that has kept three clean sheets in their last four league matches and would hope for more of the same from that upcoming schedule.

The Europa League quarter-final ties will take place on April 13 and 20. The first leg precedes a huge clash with Chelsea, while a trip to Burnley follows the second.

With a Champions League spot awarded to the Europa League winners, Mourinho might well rotate to save his best players for continental action, particularly if United fails to make major headway in the league over the next four fixtures.

Two double Gameweeks and a strong immediate schedule make United’s players attractive, fixture congestion and Man City, Spurs and Arsenal to face towards the end of a long season muddies the waters.

Team: Romero, Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Rojo, Blind (Jones 64), Pogba (Fellaini 48), Herrera, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: de Gea, Lingard, Carrick, Young, Rashford.

I'm hoping and praying that Gabbiadini doesn't go up in value this game week

Got rid of Rondon for him last night.

Fancy Gabbi to do okay this week - seems like he only needs half a chance to fall his way. You're not picking him up this week then?

Wish I could but have Carroll and fee it would be silly to swap this week since Gabby has Spurs. He's coming in next week though

Got a nagging feeling that Baines won't play this weekend. Should I do Valencia for Baines for a hit?

My other 2 defenders on the bench currently are Brunt and Maguire.

Brunt to Valencia seems like a no-brainer. I could do it, but i'm not sure the timing's quite right. Man Utd.
just played yesterday, and Valencia went 90 minutes in the Europa league when he usually does not play
at all. I'd be worried he'll be kept out and Damian will play on the right on Sunday.

that's probably a needless worry, but i'd rather let Valencia get through his international duties healthy before
        i bring him in.

    First post!

Stuck with my FPL decisions this week...

    Pickford
    Ward(Burnley) - Walker - A.Smith
    Siggy (V) - Sane - Mane - Antonio - Firmino
    Kun - Lukaku (C)

    Heaton - A.Carroll - Olsson - Lescott

    0.3m itb

I am thinking Firmino > Walcott with my FT?

    Still have WC to play!

        True...

      I've gone Gabbi.

Soton create more chances, Gabbi's stats are way better than Deeney's, and Gabbi is proving himself a clinical finisher.

      1) Kun, Sanchez, Firmino (no CHE attack) 2) Kun, Hazard, Mane (no Sanchez)
      3) Costa, Sanchez, Mane (no City)
      4) Costa, Hazard, Sanchez (no LIV or City)

Fair enough - feel like next week is a better opportunity with less clear captaincy after internationals 🙂

He's my captain this week, i'm optimistic he'll score one or two.

          Front eight is:

          Mané, Lallana, Siggy, King, Davies
          Kun, Lukaku, Llorente

Planning to use my 1FT to do Lala -> Son

Other option could be Lala + Kun -> Sanchez + Costa but I'm just not feeling that.

          Any else worth a hit?

It would be a - 4 if you want Alexis later as it would involve taking out same player

Can you do Costa and Alli in instead?

If I can't afford Alli or Eriksen I'd save the free. Son is a trade out waiting to happen imo.

          Second options get me
          Hazard Sanchez Mane Siggy King
          Costa Lukaku

Just Eriksen/Alli for Firmino and it will be good.

Just on Baines again...Everton just posted this in team news this morning as a follow-up to their story yesterday - their stance on it hasn't changed this morning.

          http://www.evertonfc.com/fixtures/2010-to-2019/2016-2017/english-premier-league/everton-vs-hull-city

"Leighton Baines has overcome his back complaint and should be available to play against Hull City this weekend. The left-back was substituted at half-time in last weekend’s 3-0 win against West Bromwich Albion, with Ramiro Funes Mori stepping off the bench to take his place. Baines was able to resume his work at USM Finch Farm on Thursday and is expected to be fit for Saturday when Everton go in search of a sixth successive home league win."

So that's "should be available" and "expected to be fit".

Neither of those statements indicate 100% certainty of fitness or availability and that's from the club, via the press department. I guess they echo Koeman's statements which were, "normally, he'd be available". Confident, but slightly guarded.

So I'm not sure we'll see a decent volume of press reports indicating a degree of certainty on Baines' 100% availability that will outweigh the club's own communication. I reckon we will see reports go with a similar stance - "expected to be available" as the day goes on. We shall see.

Obviously we can interpret this and make our own minds up - in my view, he'll start and I'd hold and play if I had him, while still kicking myself for not going Coleman two months ago.

I would say that normally he would play but possibly he might start on the bench as possibly he might give f m a start ,maybe.

Seems a risk to have let Oviedo go with Galloway out on loan too. Baines is clearly creaking these days.

Yeah for certain. I honestly don't think he starts Baines tomorrow. funi will slot in or Holgate. If so lukaku on pens would be nice for us captainers.

Koeman had plausible deniability built into what he said about Baines yesterday.

Wonder if this means Funes Mori gets a start for sure

              3. Sanchez

              a) Costa

                Overall Sanchez
                Overall Costa

But you'd probably want Alli and Gabbi at least too

Given Butland's injury problems, probably so.
