Following on from our first look at the minutes played over the international break, it’s now time check-in on the final ten clubs.

With domestic matters ready to recommence on Saturday, players who have featured on the other side of the world, particularly on either Tuesday night or the early hours of Wednesday morning, could well arrive back on our shores late and potentially fatigued.

That is a factor to consider as we plan for Gameweek 30, and the two that follow in quick succession. With that in mind, we take time out to review those involved over the international fixtures, assessing the likely impact on the weekend teamsheets and beyond.

Manchester United

Jose Mourinho is expected to be without defenders Phil Jones and Chris Smalling for the home clash against West Bromwich Albion, after the pair suffered injuries while on international duty with England. Marouane Fellaini will also have to be checked after picking up a toe problem for Belgium, while Sergio Romero, Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia will need to be assessed following the long flights back from South America.

David de Gea and Ander Herrera – Spain (24/03 (h) v Israel in Gijon and 28/03 (a) v France in Paris) – De Gea played all 180 minutes. Herrera was limited to 16 minutes off the bench in the 2-0 friendly win over France.
Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo – Argentina (23/03 (h) v Chile in Buenos Aires and 28/03 (a) v Bolivia in La Paz) – Both Romero and Rojo played all 180 minutes.
Antonio Valencia – Ecuador (23/03 (a) v Paraguay in AsunciΓ³n and 28/03 (h) v Colombia in Quito) – Played all 180 minutes.
Matteo Darmian – Italy (24/03 (h) v Albania in Palermo and 28/03 (a) v Holland in Amsterdam) – Was an unused substitute against Albania, before playing 89 minutes in the 2-1 friendly win over Holland.
Eric Bailly – Ivory Coast (24/03 (a) v Russia in Krasnodar and 27/03 (n) v Senegal in Paris) – Played the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 win over Russia, and 88 in Paris, before the match was abandoned.
Daley Blind – Holland (25/03 (a) v Bulgaria in Sofia and 28/03 (h) v Italy in Amsterdam) – Played the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 defeat to Bulgaria, and 83 minutes against Italy.
Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford – England (22/03 (a) v Germany in Dortmund and 26/03 (h) v Lithuania in London) – Shaw was limited to just seven minutes in the 1-0 defeat to Germany. Smalling played 84 minutes in Dortmund, but had to withdraw from the squad due to a leg injury. Jones, meanwhile, suffered a foot injury at the hands of Smalling in a training session, forcing him to pull out of the squad before the Germany clash. Lingard only played 19 minutes against Germany, while Rashford came off the bench in both matches, playing 20 minutes against Germany, and 30 minutes at Wembley.
Marouane Fellaini – Belgium (25/03 (h) v Greece in Brussels and 28/03 (a) v Russia in Sochi) – Played 66 minutes against Greece, but was forced off with a toe injury, which saw the midfielder sit out the friendly with Russia.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – Armenia (26/03 (h) v Kazakhstan in Yerevan) – Played the full 90 minutes, and scored in the 2-0 win.

Middlesbrough

Steve Agnew will need to check on Cristhian Stuani ahead of Sunday’s trip to Swansea City, although the extra days preparation should help the forward’s chances of being an option to start.

Cristhian Stuani – Uruguay (23/03 (h) v Brazil in Montevideo and 29/03 (a) v Peru in Lima) – Limited to just 32 minutes off the bench in the 4-1 defeat to Brazil.

Southampton

Maya Yoshida will discuss his fitness levels with manager Claude Puel before deciding whether will play Saturday’s home match against Bournemouth, with the centre-back certainly in line to be rested for one of Saints’ next three matches after playing 180 minutes for Japan. James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond will be buoyed by making their senior England debuts in the 1-0 defeat to Germany.

Fraser Forster, Ryan Bertrand, James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond – England (22/03 (a) v Germany in Dortmund and 26/03 (h) v Lithuania in London) – Forster was an unused substitute in both matches. Bertrand played 83 minutes in Dortmund, and the full 90 in the 2-0 win over Lithuania. Ward-Prowse and Redmond both made their England debuts against Germany, playing 24 and seven minutes respectively. Neither featured in the World Cup qualifier against Lithuania.
Maya Yoshida – Japan (23/03 (a) v UAE in Al Ain and 28/03 (h) v Thailand in Saitama) – Played all 180 minutes, and scored in the 4-0 win over Thailand.
Cedric Soares – Portugal (25/03 (h) v Hungary in Lisbon and 28/03 (h) v Sweden in Funchal) – Played the full 90 minutes in the 3-0 win over Hungary, but was an unused substitute in the 3-2 friendly defeat to Sweden.
Cuco Martina – Curacao (23/03 (h) v El Salvador in San Salvador) – 90 minutes
Sam McQueen and Jack Stephens – England (24/03 (a) v Germany in Wiesbaden and 27/03 (a) v Denmark in Randers) – McQueen played the full match against Denmark, while Stephens played 90 minutes in the 1-0 defeat to Germany.
Steven Davis – Northern Ireland (26/03 (h) v Norway in Belfast) – Played the full 90 minutes, and registered an assist in the 2-0 win.
Dusan Tadic – Serbia (24/03 (a) v Georgia in Tbilisi) – Played the full 90 minutes, and registered a goal and two assists in the 3-1 win.
Shane Long – Republic of Ireland (24/03 (h) v Wales in Dublin and 28/03 (h) v Iceland) – Played the full match against Wales, but only featured for 18 minutes as a substitute in the 1-0 friendly defeat to Iceland.

Stoke City

Ramadan Sobhi may face slightly limited preparation time for Saturday’s trip to Leicester City after playing in Egypt on Tuesday. Geoff Cameron may need to be checked, with the defender being troubled by a quad strain. Xherdan Shaqiri is also a concern after confirming he suffered a recurrence of a calf complaint while on duty for Switzerland.

Geoff Cameron – United States (25/03 (h) v Honduras in San Jose and 29/03 (a) v Panama in Ciudad de PanamΓ‘) – Played 59 minutes against Honduras before being substituted. Didn’t feature against Panama.

Sunderland

John O’Shea will need to be assessed ahead of the trip to Watford after picking up a shin injury during the goalless draw with Wales. Bryan Oviedo could face limited preparation time after playing for Costa Rica in Honduras on Tuesday, so he will also need to be monitored. Jermain Defoe will arrive back at the Stadium of Light in confident mood after netting on his return to the England fold.

Jordan Pickford – England U21 (24/03 (a) v Germany in Wiesbaden and 27/03 (a) v Denmark in Randers) – Played the full match against Germany, but didn’t feature against Denmark.

Meanwhile star turn Gylfi Sigurdsson was left out of Iceland’s second international against Ireland and will have returned to the club well rested ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Middlesbrough.

Lukasz Fabianski – Poland (26/03 (a) v Montenegro in Podgorica) – 90 minutes.
Kristoffer Nordfeldt – Sweden (25/03 (h) v Belarus in Solna and 28/03 (a) v Portugal in Funchal) – Was an unused substitute in both matches.

Oliver McBurnie – Scotland U21 (28/03 (h) v Estonia in Paisley) – Started in the goalless draw.

Tottenham Hotspur

Vincent Janssen had to withdraw from the Holland squad after suffering a chest infection, but Mauricio Pochettino is hopeful the striker will be okay for Saturday’s trip to Burnley. The Spurs boss revealed Son Heung-min arrived back on Thursday, with the South Korean looking to lead the attack at Turf Moor in Harry Kane’s continued absence.

Hugo Lloris – France (25/03 (a) v Luxembourg in Luxembourg City and 28/03 (h) v Spain in Paris) – 180 minutes.
Michel Vorm and Vincent Janssen – Holland (25/03 (a) v Bulgaria in Sofia and 28/03 (h) v Italy in Amsterdam) – Vorm was an unused substitute in both matches. Janssen had to withdraw from the squad due to a chest infection.

Tony Pulis has also hinted at rotation due to the busy upcoming schedule, with Nacer Chadli and James McClean perhaps vulnerable after featuring prominently for Belgium and Republic of Ireland respectively.

Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans and Chris Brunt – Northern Ireland (26/03 (h) v Norway in Belfast) – All three completed the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 win over Norway, with Brunt supplying an assist.

I've been playing the casual game recently and barely paying any attention to fantasy football matters other than around the GW deadlines - just logged in to work out what to do with my team and was genuinely surprised to find I have Carroll and Llorente up front. Honestly, I used to be half decent at this game!

Yeah, I'm not even particularly complaining - it's more the fact that if you'd asked me to name my team without me looking I might have remembered Carroll but absolutely no way would I have said Llorente was in there!

i wouldn't suggest that. I'd rather use the other chips for the DGWs and use the AOA when you might have a defensive injury crisis, genuinely poor fixtures for them, or in GW38 when there tend to be loads of goals scored.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Captaining a defender- can it work?

There is a lot of talk this week of captaining Valencia or Alonso - in the absence of strong attacking options.

But can this work. Has anyone got any success stories of captaining a defender?

    Also any horror stories?

And who is considering breaking with tradition and captaining a defender this week? If so, who and why?

im probably captaining Alonso. A cleanie is the same value as a goal and you'd generally be happy with a goal from your striker. Add to that potential attacking returns and bonus and he's a decent pick up against other options with tougher fixtures.

A striker or mid can always score a goal at anytime within the 90 mins. Once the CS is gone for a defender you nver going to get those 4 points back - and you then depend in attacking returns.
As good as it looks this week, statistically it the odds will never be in your favour by captaining a defender

        1. pompeyfan
          • 16 Years
          8 years, 8 months ago

          that's just psychological.

If your talking odds, Aguero is 11/10 ATGS, most other options are longer than this.

For a cleansheet Chelsea are shorter than 1/2.

Granted this doesn't take into account assists, but nor does it tak into account attacking returns for defenders.

This is probably the closest I've come this season - Alonso is clearly an option and, if he was on the FK's over Luiz, it would be a close call.

That's the key factor for me - we have to see attacking returns as a probability. In the past, only Baines has really tempted me during his FK and spot-kick days. I'd gone Matt Taylor in the past too - although that was hardly a punt.

I do wonder if a Boro defender could come out top in GW34.

We should also perhaps factor in that Palace have been much better defensively of late, so attacking returns for Alonso are maybe not all that likely.

Alonso, just because it seems the week to take a punt. Fancy a clean sheet from Alonso more than I fancy any of my attackers to get a goal plus the bonus and potential attacking points that come with it - He's been very close with some free kicks lately!

Last defender I captained was Agger, when I had a dream he scored a 30 yard rocket. He got booked and they conceded 3 goals and he got 0.

The issue isn't whether it can work, since defenders are capable of scoring points it can obviously work! It's whether it's a sound choice or not given the available information. Explosive returns are where the gains are and ultimately what you need to be aiming for with captains. I don't think it's worth it since there's a wealth of attacking options capable of exploding and with a history of doing so far more frequently than Alonso or Valencia.

I've captained a goalie and it worked out very well for me. I don't think captaining a defender is a bad idea at all. It certainly is risky.

I don't think it's a big deal tbh. I captained smalling last season for a clean sheet and 2 bonus, did baines this season for a yellow card 1 pointer. I've captained Aguero and benteke this season for -1 each so it can go wrong even on top picks

I captained Mark Schwarzer for a Fulham DGW years ago.

      Didn't go well.

Think the only reason people are so reluctant is a clean sheet can be taken away in an instant where a goal can't.

Last min consolation and four points and bonus cud be gone, whereas mid or striker goal ur safe points.

Alonso bonus of good attacking potential at least so uve double the chance, could definitely work out. Fair play to anyone brave enough to do it, just hate seeing clean sheet wipeouts and if captain your wipeout be v annoying

I've had the armband on Alonso all week, and I've learnt that my captian choices have been better this week when I've gone with my instinct and haven't changed my mind at the last minute. Hoping for another 21 pointer πŸ˜€

If you have Lukaku or Siggy then it's pretty obvious these are they guys to captain. I'm top of my mini league and I am not willing to take a risk like that on a defender as captain but I do see some valid points in here.

I just think that Lukaku's form against a liverpool team that do concede and Siggy at home v weak opposition is pretty much straight forward.

I think it can work, but that's not the whole question for me. I often think about the experience of watching or otherwise following the matches. Against Palace I see him getting a cleanie and probably nothing else, maybe a bap. This week 7 points could be a great (c), and I think 6 is almost a certainty this week for him (touch wood). However, what fun is that going to be to follow? Against a stiffened-up Palace defence, is he likely to score? It sucks to be waiting until the 94th minute to see if your clean sheet will come in. I want a (c) where I am constantly hoping this play will develop into a scoring opportunity. So from the perspective of fan enjoyment, I will not be putting the armband on Alonso. But from the standpoint of, say, MOTD challenge, he is a very reliable route to avoiding a (c) fail, which is probably what I will get with mine (Sanchez).

Yes. I captained Rose for his 11 pointer against Burnley. Also captained Ashley Cole once some years back when he got me 15 points.

Captained Baines for 30 points a couple of seasons ago, and Kolarov for double nil last season so can be a mixed bag. As long as you have someone with decent attacking threat as well, then don't know why you'd rule it out.

Actually captained Skrtel in that Liverpool DGW a season or so back. Think I got one cleanie out of him if I recall in that very disappointing outcome.

Captained Vidic about 5 years ago on a DGW.

2 clean sheets and a winning goal

Alonso: 5.7 ppg. Excluding Aké (8 starts) and Sakho (3 starts) that's the highest ppg for a defender by some way. Next is Coleman (5.1) and Cahill (4.8).

Here are the midfielders and defenders with 5.7 or more ppg:
Sanchez, Mane, Hazard, Alli, Eriksen, Kane, Lukaku, Jesus, Gabbiadini, Costa, Ibrahimovic.

Defenders simply don't score as many points as midfielders and strikers. That said, there are certain weeks where I think captaining a defender can be a smart move, this week being one of them. Horror stories can happen whoever you captain... see GW27 Ibrahimovic (missed pen, yellow card at home to Bournemouth).

Not sure anyone is talking about Valencia but Alonso is not a bad shout this week.

No successfu or horror stories as I've never done it before but now is as good a week as any to start I feel.

Jonty, I killed two myths with one stone a few seasons back. I captained a defender in a 12.45pm kick-off.

I captained Zabaleta, home to Hull. In the first half, Hull missed a 1-on-1 chance vs Hart. Zabaleta went on to CS, get an assist, and 3 BAPs, so 2 x 12 = 24 points.

From memory I have only had one failure out of about 6 defender captain choices, which have mostly been with Baines and even once with Ashley Cole.

In my maverick days, I've captained Liam Ridgewell(!) when he was playing for Birmingham(!) and got a 9x2!! πŸ˜€

I'd consider Alonso if I had him, but definitely would settle for Sanchez or Aguero or Vardy(if I get him).

Mane vs Everton who have two defenders injured
      Ali on pens vs Burnley
Sanchez on pens if giroud if off vs John stones, ottamendi
      Costa at home

      Plenty of options in attack.

I triple captained Wayne Hennessey in a DGW last season. Got me about 60 points. He hadn't kept a CS in 14 gw before that.

Sure it can work, but I guess it feels riskier.

I had success to a degree when I (C) Brunt in Gwk 14 - 1 goal, 1 assist, 3 BP's and 2 pts for playing 79 mins = 14x2, which I was very happy with, until Arsenal play West Ham, and Sanchez tears them up, scoring a whopping 23 pts that I could have seen doubled if I'd just changed him from my (VC) to (C) over Brunt...

Only time I've stuck the armband on a Def this season so far, not planning on doing so this week, but certainly not a bad shout.

I'm on my WC playing a 3-5-2 and currently have this midfield:

    Sanchez / Mane / Ali / Eriksen / King

Although I can afford it easily I'm just not sure I'm convinced I want the Spurs double up and can't get really excited about it.

I had Tadic over Eriksen but I think there a big question marks over his starts with the fixture pile up Southampton have in April and Puels love for rotation.

I'll be getting Mane out for Sterling in a few weeks but other than that I don't feel inspired by anyone else.

Is the Spurs double up a worthy investment?

If doubling up Spurs mid. When Kane is back that means you can't have a Spurs defender. So what's your current WC defence, any Spurs in tehre?

        Yeah I have Ben Davies.

It's a very good point. It would be quite easy for me to switch out Davies or a Spurs mid but still something worth conseridng for sure. But unless Kane returns sooner than GW35/36 I'd be dumping at least one of them for a DGW player anyway.

Normally I would not opt for a double up unless there is a DGW. So if you won't get Kane till 35 then that is the only reason I can think of for getting both Alli and Erik.

Personally if I were doing WC I would throw in a differential like Mata or Pedro as my 4th MF or get in the city MF early doors.

Read the articles, checked the poll...
Need a diff cap, have Costa.
Mane vs Eve - "new" Eve defence, so-so form (have Cout also - minutes are bugging me)
Tadic vs Bou - with "minutes talk", without Gabbiadini, good form
Kun vs Ars - Ospina, open or defensive game (have Sane also - again, minutes)
    Coinflip or reason?

It really is a coin flip mate. What I like about these gameweeks is the fact that captain choices in the ML can't be second guessed.

Good luck pal. From your shouts, I would personally edge towards Mane....

    Weird situation:
Costa the second most transferred out player per hour atm and is favorite for captain.
Llorente second most transferred in player and a big favorite to be benched.
