Friday delivers our regular visit to our daily and weekly partner game FanDuel. As usual, we’ll be assessing the upcoming contests on offer and the prizes available before putting our neck on the line by revealing our strongest XI to help steer your selections.

Earlier this week we announced the opening of a FanDuel Survivor contest, taking place over the next four rounds of matches.

The contest uses a familiar “Last Man Standing” ruleset, with  participants who survive the cut each week going through until we eventually find our winner in the fourth week. It’s free to enter, with prizes on offer and is open to UK residents.

There are only 300 places available, so be sure to claim your spot ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

For those yet to sign up, if you register ahead of this tournament, FanDuel will also add £5 credit to your account. Use the code SCOUTFIVER to access this promotion. Further details on how to get involved can be found here.

If you’re new to FanDuel, we recommend that you check out our strategy guide for in-depth tips and, for this week, our selection below will hopefully provide some pointers for your first line-up.

FanDuel contests take place over the regular three windows this weekend. The full ten-fixture slate begins with the Merseyside derby from 12.30pm tomorrow.

The deadline for the Saturday contests is the 3pm kick-offs, of which there are six. This wraps up with the south coast clash between Southampton and Bournemouth at teatime.

Games are also available that include the two Sunday ties, as Middlesbrough visit the Liberty Stadium at 1.30pm before the weekend headliner which sees Manchester City roll up to the Emirates at 4pm.

My Strongest XI

David de Gea £7.0m
Mason Holgate £6.5m
James Tomkins £7.1m
Ben Davies £7.5m
Dusan Tadic £8.5m
Juan Mata £12m
Dele Alli £12.3m
Gylfi Sigurdsson £12.9m
Jermain Defoe £8.1m
Troy Deeney £8.8m
Jamie Vardy £9.3m

The Key Picks

Manchester United’s David De Gea was always our primary choice in goal this week, with a modest £7.0m price point proving too tempting.

The Spaniard has conceded a mere ten goals at Old Trafford all season and will welcome a West Brom outfit that has notched just 12 in 14 away trips. The Baggies are also set to rotate and, as long as United can cope with their set-piece threat, De Gea would seem very likely to emerge with the ten points available for a clean sheet.

Injuries to Everton’s Seamus Coleman and Ramiro Funes Mori while on international duty have paved the way for Mason Holgate to earn selection. The Toffees defender is likely to be deployed either in a back three or as a right-back and should be busy holding off waves of Liverpool attacks. We expect an improvement on the 16-point average he’s accrued over six starts in a productive Anfield display.

Sam Allardyce has instilled some belated backbone into his Crystal Palace defence, conjuring three successive clean sheets. While there are no points on offer for defenders who earn shutouts, Palace’s form hints at a resilient performance at Stamford Bridge this weekend. We’ve therefore opted for James Tomkins for our line-up, with his 56 clearances, interceptions and blocks (CBI’s) ranking him top from the Eagles rearguard over their last six outings.

While we usually focus on centre-backs, we’ve opted for Spurs’ left-sided defender Ben Davies after identifying the Burnley right flank as a potential weak spot. The Clarets have conceded more chances (27) and crosses (80) than any other side over the last six down that wing. Davies could be poised to profit, then, given that he’s recorded more crosses (15) and created more chances (seven) than the popular Kyle Walker over the last four Gameweeks.

We’ve invested heavily in midfield this week, beginning with Dusan Tadic, who makes the cut having recorded some encouraging numbers of late.

The Southampton midfielder has produced 14 goal attempts and 13 key passes over his last six outings, delivering a pair of goals and three assists. Set-piece duties also heighten his appeal for Saturday’s clash: only Hull City (38) have conceded more chances from set plays than visitors Bournemouth (30) over the last six Gameweeks.

Juan Mata is set to be a key figure as Manchester United bid to penetrate a West Brom rearguard effort at Old Trafford. The playmaker has started the last four and created more chances (13) than any team-mate over that spell. Two goals and an assist in that period have also contributed to a strong average of 26.9 points in FanDuel.

While Spurs are likely to face stubborn resistance against Burnley at Turf Moor, they have the form and confidence to earn three points. If Mauricio Pochettino’s side are to prevail, Dele Alli will surely be a pivotal figure. Having averaged 39 points over his past three outings and claimed spot-kick duties from the injured Harry Kane, Alli is difficult to ignore.

Gylfi Sigurdsson heads into Sunday’s clash with Middlesbrough having been rested in Iceland’s second international with Ireland in midweek. Only Paul Pogba (26.2) and Christian Eriksen (27.3) have stronger FanDuel points averages this campaign than the Swans midfielder (25.6). While he blanked at Bournemouth last time out, Sigurdsson has netted three goals and served up five assists in his previous seven outings. Involved in 53% of Swansea’s goals, it’s difficult to see Sigurdsson miss out on a handsome haul should Paul Clement’s side earn the victory.

Our first forward gets the nod thanks to an enticing price tag, along with a midweek goal that might just serve to reverse a recent dip in form. Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe may not have scored in four league matches, but a goal against Lithuania for England should boost his confidence. The forward netted a brace at Crystal Palace in Gameweek 24 to score 46 points in FanDuel, underlining his undoubted ability to bring in hauls. Defoe and Sunderland now visit a Watford side that lost 4-3 to Southampton last time out at Vicarage Road.

We’re expecting plenty of goals in that encounter, so we’ve also moved to secure Troy Deeney in our line-up. The Hornets skipper has scored five goals in seven appearances as part of a convincing run of form which includes scoring in three successive matches at home. His six chances created and 25 CBI’s over that run also illustrates an industrious work-rate which suits the FanDuel scoring system.

Our final selection has been reinvigorated for Leicester City since Craig Shakespeare took the reins. Jamie Vardy has returned three goals and a pair of assists in the Foxes three league victories under the new manager. Stoke travel to the King Power Stadium on Saturday having conceded three or more goals in four of their last seven away trips. That sets the scene for Vardy to continue his renaissance, with a goal for England in midweek maintaining his renewed confidence.

This Week’s Contests

As usual, the largest pot to be found this weekend is the Fan Favourite, which has £2,500 in prize money. The first-placed participant collects £500 and it’s £5 per entry, with the top 120 places earning rewards.

There’s also a double-up game with £1,000 available – it’s a £10 buy-in and the top 50 players earn prizes.

On Saturday there’s a £3 buy-in contest that has £500 up for grabs. This is split between 43 entries, with £100 being paid to the winner.

The action wraps up on Sunday with a £1,400 game that has a £7 entry fee – the top 29 places share the winnings and first prize is £280.

Finally, remember to enter the free Survivor tournament taking place over the next four Gameweeks. There are 300 spots available to UK residents and the deadline for entries is 12.30pm Saturday.

I can't believe Rondon might get another stay of execution. Was all set to do Rondon to Deeney, but the sick-bug issue is putting me off.

    Firmino - Coutinho - Siggy - King
    Aguero (c) - Lukaku

I could use some advice on the 7th attacker:

    A) Grosicki (no hit, and the Rondon decision waits until GW31)
    B) Deeney for Rondon (-4) (even if Deeney gets a cameo tomorrow it might be worth it in the long run)

    Cheers!

watching West Ham recently, i get that "explosion imminent" feeling from Andy Carroll.

have you considered him? i seem to remember you have. something put you off, the
      next just-around-the-corner injury perhaps?

        Hey, Jersey!

        Very interesting response.

I posted yesterday about choosing between Deeney, Carroll, or holding and going with Grosicki. I also responded to a number of other posters about Andy's positive performances lately, number of headed attempts his upcoming opponents have been giving up, etc - essentially, that I think he might be due a few hauls.

The injuries and uncertainty of him starting the next three is what moved me to Deeney (as he seems to play 90 in just about every match), but I think I'm back on Carroll.

Having Grosicki sitting there rotting on my bench doesn't thrill me, but he will be a nice option to have if another attacker gets injured or rotated, or I need someone to see me through King's rough upcoming patch.

How do you feel about Carroll?

        1. Jersey

we all know the reasons why buying Big Andy should make one wary.

if you can get over those fears, i say do it. i would, if i had your team.

he is really rounding into form, and his fixtures until a probable WC are really good, even Arsenal. he had their centerbacks looking for their mamas last year. hat-tricked them, as i remember.

i like him far more than Deeney or Grosicki right now.

Yep, I'm coming around to it. I think the upside is worth the risk. And, as I mentioned, having a (I expect to be) playing, attacking, threat like Grosicki there in case of injury actually gives me more comfort in bringing in a player with an extensive injury record.

I appreciate the feedback. I think I'll make the move.

(Oh, and I agree about Arsenal. His next five upcoming matches all look pretty juicy to me, and then it will be time for the WC.)

If you could have a real life fantasy team based on players from the PL, who would it be? Mine is:

    ............de Gea
    Walker Toby Luiz Rose
    .............Kante
    ....Dembele de Bruyne
    Alli.................Sanchez
    ...........Aguero

Struggled with central midfield a bit to be honest.

      Wanyama -> Kante
      Eriksen -> Sanchez
      Kane -> Aguero
      Lloris -> de Gea
      Verthongen -> Luiz

If I was to pick a PL Xl right now it would probably be entirely Spurs. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

They seem to have it all with good chemistry, strong players and a settled team.

Maybe do Kane > Sanchez...but only maybe.

Anyone using a precious transfer to bring in a differential until season end? If so who?

Gabbiadini if fit looks a decent one i think at 10m

Tom Davies looks the best budget mid currently if you need some dosh for captain swaps up top at 5.3m

Also from Everton, Holgate could come in with the Coleman and Funes Mori injuries - hes just 4.7m and line ups will be out for this one pre-deadline of course. (although i probably wouldn't bring him in against Liverpool!)

All great options. I'm skint on transfers in my main team tho so no room for luxury moves.

Vardy looks a good captaincy option for those with spare transfers and looking to climb the rankings - not cheap mind.

        Wanyama?

Considering the Spurs fixtures and home form.

At £8.7m he is a cheaper way into the midfield although a defensive midfielder he still has over 100 points (110) mainly from eleven tackle bonuses, seven passing bonuses, two goals and one man of the match award.

        Maverick maybe..

I have struggled a bit this year as well tbh. Sitting around 850 and low on transfers. The captaincy rule is OK, although I much preferred it last year. Can't see them ever bringing that back though.

I quite like the captain rules. It's not quite as strategic as before, but it's perhaps the right balance so as not to be prohibitively complicated. I wonder if they should consider ditching the man of the match bonuses though, they're a nightmare. Season is going pretty well - top 400 with 7 transfers left. How about yours?

MOTM can be a bit random. It's great when your captaincy hits one though so I don't mind it - its almost a skill trying to figure what player is most likely to be picked for MOTM.

Not been a good season for me. Sitting around 850 last I checked and without many trades left. You might just sneak into the top 100 from there!

Ha yeah that's true. Narrative is everything to the reporters and commentators, unless it's Hazard or Coutinho of course.

Top 100 is the aim. Captains have made rank pretty volatile so I think there's lots to be gained (and lost) still. You'd be hard pushed to beat your previous season, but anything in the top 1000 is still very good I think.

I'm inside the top 100 with 12 left.

      I've allocated 3 this week:

      Bou - Sot defender
      Tot in
      Ars in

Should give me a front 7 of:

      Tot
      Ars
      Swa
      Liv
      Mci
      Eve
      Che

Other transfers will revolve around exchanging premium players according to fixture, eg:

Zlatan and Sanchez in for 32
Aguero and Sot in for 34

Currently in the top 150 with 6 transfers left.

Don't waste a transfer on someone who might not be playing come the end. (Davies). I'd plan who you might want up top later down the line so not to use up your budget on a defender if it bites you later. Valencia a decent shout, Alonso if you don't have him, even do a sneaky Chelsea double up maybe?

You need to go for a season keeper: Valencia and Walker look to be the best bets if you have money to burn...

Southampton have the joint most fixtures left, so maybe a saint if you want to splash the extra cash up front?

      Great info, thanks Luke!

I'm a Gabbiadini owner, wondering if I should shift him or hope for a midweek appearance? His future doubles and the fact I'm 0.5m off a direct punt on Vardy incline me to hold and hope.

Great to see some chat on here about the Sky game and seems there's lots of top quality players, too. A forum or regular Hot Topic section dedicated to Sky would be brilliant!

    Bench one:

    King (sou)
    Llorente (MID), own siggy also

Should bench Llorente I believe given Kings form, but then I wonder why even have Llorente if you won't play him in games like this? Anyone got any thoughts?

Bench King for me. Always go with the home player.

Is Robertson fixuture (WHU home) is good enough to play him instead of Brunt (MAN away) and his "possible attacking returns"?

    Hi all

Nothing wildly pressing this week, any suggestions:

    Pickford (Foster)
    Azpi Walker Pieters (Funes, Browning)
    Siggy Sanchez King Mane (Carroll)
    Aguero Lukaku Llorente

    1. King > Pedro
    2. Funes > Mawson (or other c.5m defender)
    3. Something else
    4. Save

I am leaning to 2 for a backup defender, or just save to give flexibility. Chelsea cover is my only concern, but King is on form at the moment.

    Would appreciate any thoughts.

    Chris

If you get Mawson then start him. Pedro could be rotated over the course of the week. Save?
