He might be Chelsea’s top goal scorer in the Premier League but the signs are that Florent Malouda may well not be the cast iron FPL selection his early season form suggested. Malouda scored 6 goals in his first 5 games (one of those five games being a 7 minute cameo against West Ham) to carry on the form he was displaying in front of goal on the back end of last season.

However since Chelsea’s 4-0 against Blackpool the Frenchman has scored only one goal and contributed zero assists in the following 8 games. He has also picked up zero bonus points to top it off. That is not the sort of form that warrants inclusion in Fantasy Football teams and certainly not the type which can be justified under his price – currently £10.4m in the FPL game.

What is ominous is the fact that Chelsea’s early season form has slowed to a halt. Today’s 3-0 defeat (battering?) by Sunderland served to highlight how much Chelsea are stuttering at the moment and, whilst it’s clear they are missing some big players, there are signs that the machine that is Chelsea is beginning to rust. Based on this and their performance against Liverpool, extensive coverage of Chelsea players is not looking to be the golden goose it was a few weeks ago. Malouda’s poor returns appear to have coincided with Chelsea’s slowdown in goalscoring form.

To highlight how poor his returns have been it serves as a worthwhile exercise to compare his returns in the last 8 weeks to some (not all of course) of the other midfielder’s who the Frenchman is up against in our Fantasy Football Teams.

NameScore in last 8 GW’s
Nani50
Van Der Vaart49
Cahill46
Nolan45
Brunt41
Downing38
Bale34
Malouda24

Note that this list isn’t exhaustive but it makes worrying reading – just think about how many more points your FPL team would have had (and how much more money you would have to play with) if you’d gone with Nolan for that period? It doesn’t bear thinking about.

What is making it worst is Malouda’s inability to finish games. This serves to indicate that Ancellotti may not see him as essential as FPL managers did throughout the start of this season. For many tonights substitution will be the straw which breaks the camels back and at having maintained his highest price of £10.4m for the last 6 weeks now might be the time to cash in whilst you can get the best return.

To be fair to Florent Malouda, and to give a balanced perspective on things, he has been carrying an injury that with a full squad to pick from might have seen him given more rest. Indeed he mentioned it before the build up;

“It came against Blackburn. It was a tackle from behind but I had to carry on because it was a tough game and I was struggling.

“Until half-time I was OK but after half-time I could feel the ligament and the calf was a bit stiff so I was limping on the pitch and I had to take care of my ankle.”

This surely provides an explanation into the constant substitutions. However, FPL managers aren’t exactly a sentimental bunch and a half injured midfielder who is offering nothing points wise isn’t going to hang about long.

As a result no doubt thousands of managers will be dropping the Chelsea midfielder for someone in better form. Managers could do a lot worse than closing their eyes and picking one from the list above.

Excellent - it's lovely to see Chelsea do badly both from a ff perspective and not. I'm a little bit under-represented with just Malouda so them doing badly is effectively a win.

Not regretted dropping Drogba yet either, which is nice.

Also Captain Fabs won over Tevez which was my 50-50 choice this week.

Arteta is nowhere near involved enough at the moment for my liking though.

it would also mean that growing a team of players is the best policy not simply buying them. if arsenal had a fully fit squad realtively all season they would win the title easily. van persie, vermaelen, fabregas and others are always missed. shame really

    Drogba - Elmander
    Elmo - Vidic

Will give me a team of

    Foster/Hahnemann
    Vidic, Zhirkov, Dann, Coleman, Tamas
    Nani, Fabregas, Cahill, Bale, Brunt
    Torres, Carroll, Elmander

    then I will go

    Coleman - Baines

    Sound sensible?

True, but its not like they're going to get hammered every game is it. Drog will be back sooner or later, and with no other big striker's firing, you might as well hang on.

Whether they get hammered or not is immaterial - £23m invested in 2 players churning out 1 and 2 points isn't satisfying.

Drogba will come back to form, but Malouda looks lost at the moment and Kalou looks a better propostion to fire a goal or two.

Yep, Nani or VDV (nani for fixtures I'd say) in for Nasri, and get rid of Elmo. Its basically a sound team, though you could use a bit more cash upfront. Conversley, I'd suggest that the cheap goalie tactic is failing on an epic scale this season....

hes got no more than two only twice in his last 8 games. those first four handy home games, then virtually nothing. No easy fistures coming up, to be honest i really want him out not for the money ( i have loads of that) im just sick to my teeth of not being able to leave him on the bench. Im aiming for a preemptive decision ye know.

Yeah..but I was more worried about Cesc basically hanging around with him for the first half and letting Song go forward..After the 1200th misplaced Song pass, Cesc just ran by him as if to say don't ever go into the opposition half again..thank god!

MFaulkner was on here early saying that he thought Song was man of the match. Couldn't tell exactly how serious he was being, but it was pretty worrying nonetheless.

I lost count of the number of times Song lost possession today. And the majority of times it was because he passed the ball straight into touch.

"Alexandre, you're not Michael Essien for f*cks sake! Now stop trying to play like him!"

        Would be my advice.... 😉

Serious? I lost count of the amount of times he misplaced his passes..In fact their only goal came from a 2 on 1 involving Song and Clichy that should have resulted in us wasting time in their half..but ended up with Song passing the ball out of touch under no pressure whatsoever! He can't pass nor tackle imo. I bloody hate him! I know some Gooners like him but I actually want to slap Wenger until he assures me that Song will not go into the opposition half , therefore freeing up Cesc and co..The whole issue really annoys me..especially when he comes up with a last minute winner and rubbishes my theory!

I've made two transfers last night, to beat the price changes, and know exactly what my third will be (Arteta to Nani)... It's not a knee jerk after the Chelsea humiliation.

I've gone a little bit mental with the point hits recently, but once I've made these changes I should have a team that will get me through to the next wildcard without too many transfers in the meantime.

            Foster Jaask
            Kolarov Vidic Konchesky Coleman Jara
            Fabregas Nani VDV Cahill N'Zogbia
            Drogba Carroll Odemwingie

Is basically what I'm looking at.
