He might be Chelsea’s top goal scorer in the Premier League but the signs are that Florent Malouda may well not be the cast iron FPL selection his early season form suggested. Malouda scored 6 goals in his first 5 games (one of those five games being a 7 minute cameo against West Ham) to carry on the form he was displaying in front of goal on the back end of last season.

However since Chelsea’s 4-0 against Blackpool the Frenchman has scored only one goal and contributed zero assists in the following 8 games. He has also picked up zero bonus points to top it off. That is not the sort of form that warrants inclusion in Fantasy Football teams and certainly not the type which can be justified under his price – currently £10.4m in the FPL game.

What is ominous is the fact that Chelsea’s early season form has slowed to a halt. Today’s 3-0 defeat (battering?) by Sunderland served to highlight how much Chelsea are stuttering at the moment and, whilst it’s clear they are missing some big players, there are signs that the machine that is Chelsea is beginning to rust. Based on this and their performance against Liverpool, extensive coverage of Chelsea players is not looking to be the golden goose it was a few weeks ago. Malouda’s poor returns appear to have coincided with Chelsea’s slowdown in goalscoring form.

To highlight how poor his returns have been it serves as a worthwhile exercise to compare his returns in the last 8 weeks to some (not all of course) of the other midfielder’s who the Frenchman is up against in our Fantasy Football Teams.

NameScore in last 8 GW’s
Nani50
Van Der Vaart49
Cahill46
Nolan45
Brunt41
Downing38
Bale34
Malouda24

Note that this list isn’t exhaustive but it makes worrying reading – just think about how many more points your FPL team would have had (and how much more money you would have to play with) if you’d gone with Nolan for that period? It doesn’t bear thinking about.

What is making it worst is Malouda’s inability to finish games. This serves to indicate that Ancellotti may not see him as essential as FPL managers did throughout the start of this season. For many tonights substitution will be the straw which breaks the camels back and at having maintained his highest price of £10.4m for the last 6 weeks now might be the time to cash in whilst you can get the best return.

To be fair to Florent Malouda, and to give a balanced perspective on things, he has been carrying an injury that with a full squad to pick from might have seen him given more rest. Indeed he mentioned it before the build up;

“It came against Blackburn. It was a tackle from behind but I had to carry on because it was a tough game and I was struggling.

“Until half-time I was OK but after half-time I could feel the ligament and the calf was a bit stiff so I was limping on the pitch and I had to take care of my ankle.”

This surely provides an explanation into the constant substitutions. However, FPL managers aren’t exactly a sentimental bunch and a half injured midfielder who is offering nothing points wise isn’t going to hang about long.

As a result no doubt thousands of managers will be dropping the Chelsea midfielder for someone in better form. Managers could do a lot worse than closing their eyes and picking one from the list above.

        Agree.

It's times like these that it pays to grit your teeth and have a little patience.

Don't wanna be another one of those 'why did it transfer out Bale this week'.

Put ff aside, these are quality players playing in a quality team - that team have been struggling a little recently but they will bounce back. Sometimes i think people can get a bit caught up in the points and lose perspective on the bigger picture.

        Just my opinion anyway.

Hey guys. I reckon my team doesn't need changing (providing none of my players pick up injuries in the internationals midweek.) What do you think?

    Friedel (Foster)

Cole - Bosingwa - Elmo (Coleman - Jones)

VDV - Nasri - Fabregas - Nani (Diame)

    Torres(C) - Carroll - Elmander

      Nasri, Elmohamady, Bosingwa

Those 3 should be on your "replace" list.

But they aren't priorities. I'd get Nasri out first. Doubling on Arsenal isn't ideal. Use the money saved to get Vidic or Evra. ManUtd have good fixtures.

    Transfer options for this week.

    A - Alcaraz > Kolarov

    B - N'Zogbia > Bale

    C - Emerton > Jarvis

    D - Carroll > Gyan

Still on A which was my original plan, but some of the other transfers are presenting interesting alternatives.

Although I think I'd prefer to keep a bench fodder player like Emerton so I can upgrade in other areas.

Look at Wigan's fixtures. 4 away in 6 games.

They aren't exactly a defensive stronghold...

Although I am loathe to get rid of a guaranteed starter... Maybe I'll replace Elmohamady instead.

The priority should definitely be Nani. ManUtd have great fixtures, and he's their main man. Get rid of Berbatov though, he's off the pace.

Players to consider (counting what you have now):

Goalkeepers: Jaaskelainen (or you could just keep Hahnemann)

Defenders: Kolarov, Vidic, Evra, Shawcross, Foley

        Midfielders: Nani, N'Zogbia, Etherington, Jarvis

Forwards: Gyan, Elmander, K. Davies, Hernandez, Tevez, Rooney

As a Chelsea fan wheels have shown signs of coming 0ff for a while - gutted we got battered by Sunderland today but this could be the wake up the team need - rather than keep sneaking victories whilst playing poor.

We look slack at the back, despite keeping so many clean sheets (Cech is the only reason for this i believe). Terry hasnt been great and Ivanovic makes mistakes. I think Chelsea need a solid Centre Half and a goal scorer in Midfield (VDV) before they will win Champs league or become the team they keep threatening to become.

Drogba needs time to get back to full form but will come good im sure.

For those saying we are idiots for thinking of transferring Drogba and co out.

How long are we supposed to wait?

Drogba hasn't scored for 6 games and has scored 3 goals in 12 games. For the most expensive player in the FPL that doesn't seem like good value.

Sure he got a few assists second week but that's about it. I have no doubt he will score in one of his next 10 matches but which one will it be? It could be January and you'll still be saying "blah blah Chelsea are going to win the league" "blah blah he'll come good" Of course he will come good but when?!

Once the referees sort themselves out, we might start getting penalties when our players are hauled down in the box from corners. When that finally happens, if it even does, Drogba will step up and bang in the penalty.

well, kneejerk? you have already admitted as much!

Piqquione out is a bit mad, he is in good form and has a few nice fixtures. When Bent is back, Gyan will no longer be the main man or on pens for that matter probably. Arteta had to go though, wouldn't agree with how early you did do it, but he was so deep today, and the fact Baines takes alot of the more dangerous free kicks has made me happier in not having gone for him when I planned to a few weeks back.

Hey bros, I've had a few bad weeks with my players and would appreciate some input on how to change this team up for the better.

    Mingolet - Hart
    Ridgewell - Coleman - Elmohamady - A. Cole - Jara
Malouda - Adam - Nasri - Nani - Van Der Vaart
    Elmander - Drogba - Carrol

    2.2mil in the bank.

I've been dissapointed with Elmo, Malouda, and Nasri. I feel like I need to change Elmo, perhaps for Kolarov but I'm at a loss at who to switch up for Nasri and Malouda. Thinking of changing Malouda as Nasri might come through in a pinch against Tottenham.

    Malouda -> Nani
    Hutton/Elmo -> Ferdinand
    Drogba -> Torres

4 point hit. The last one is the one I am debating over. Hutton or Elmo -> Ferdinand? Which one I can't decide, the way I see it is that Hutton will at least start every game for the time being, where as Elmo won't. And it is pointless having him. Just answered my own question a bit really. So Elmo -> Ferdinand, good idea?

All looks good to me (shame you can't afford Vidic) - the Malouda & Drogba transfers are ones I had in mind also.

I can afford Vidic if I do the third transfer too, but I'm not even sure if I want Vidic. Surely there can only be so many goals for him? And 1m more expensive, surely he isn't worth 1m more?

His price is inevitably spiralling so it's now or never - trouble is Ferdinand offers nothing (but the odd cleansheet) as a FPL player; whilst Evra is not doing that great; and Rafael/Neville/Brown/O'Shea fight over the right-back position.

I'd say it is definitely worth paying £0.3m more for Vidic over Evra; but on it's own account I agree that Vidic doesn't offer defensive solidity and he isn't going to score all the time.

Right have two free transfers and need to make changes, opinions on:

    a) Malouda out - cahill in and kolarov for elmo

    or

    b) Malouda and Nasri out - Fabregas and Jarvis/adam in

Should i stick with nasri for another few weeks or is switching him for jarvis allowing me to free up funds for Fab a good option.

    Also adam or Jarvis?

    Thanks

    Vidic v Evra?

Vidic has already scored 3 goals. Likelihood he is at least halfway and probably more than halfway to his season total.

Evra just one assist and likely to pick up a lot more based on previous seasons.

I assume both are nailed on to play. Anyone help?

Both are nailed onto play but Evra is having a really off-season; at least Vidic can nod one or two in to offset against his own current defensive frailties...

Anyone know why Cashley has pulled out of the England squad?

Warnock and Cahill have been called up instead of Cole and Terry btw. What has Warnock done to merit being picked ahead of Baines?

          Yes, I did thanks.

Haye ensured I never have to endure another Harrison fight, Pacquiao showed what an all time great he truly is, and both undercard fights were very exciting.

      1. Out of shame probably.

      2. Capello seems to have gone off him ever since he complained about mising home, which was then twisted by the media into him having homesickness. As Capello has little to no interest in having conversations with his players, or treating them like adults, he probably just bought the media spin.

I don't think you'd find many who'd argue that Warnock is better.

Don't see why people are giving Cashley such a hard time over the 3rd goal.... It was at death and his only other option was putting the ball into touch, allowing Sunderland to waste a couple of minutes fannying around. All he tried to do was keep the ball alive, and unfortunately it failed miserably.

Warnock didnt shit his pants in a meaningless friendly and then say he was homesick when on England duty.

      That I guess

With 4 away fixtures in the next 6 is it time to get rid of my short term buy - Piquionne - and get in Elmander?

Piquionne has some nice fixtures coming up but I just brought in Elmander for Tevez. I may be putting my neck on the line here but Elmander's goal v Wolves may be a contender for goal of the season.

Why is Elmo now not getting played? Sun have good fixtures coming up as well. Also Gyan looks class, considering taking Tevez out for him

I personally didn't actually that Gyan was thatgood today. Welbeck completely overshadowed him....

Same with Cattermole and Henderson in midfield.

          Give over, he wasn't 'world-class'...

And he was up against our 3rd choice right back playing at CB. Bruma should have played.

Ask anyone, I've always said that he is hopeless. The only reason he's in my team is because he was scoring so well in this game and was playing out of position, not because I think he's any good.
