Howard has to stop letting in so many goals and ending up on the losing team.

if Vorm and Al-Habsi didn't get anything for a CS and penalty save a few weeks ago, TH had no chance this week.

and yes, i am STILL p*ssed off that Vorm didn't get any baps that week.......

        Yeah I thought so too.

Although I'm a little confused as to why they need to look at past matches (760?) to determine potential shot points and then allocate the points from there when it should be only the current match that they are focusing on.....?

Use a large sample to produce a model which takes into account the probability of each action affecting a result.
For instance you couldn't say on a match to match basis that say Gallas making 5 tackles lead to one more shot but you could say that in general for each 5 tackles a defender makes their team will get another shot away.

Explains why Vorm never gets bp. Swanseas style of play means that their players get high PPI scores due to, "expected increase in shots", due to the many passes they execute.

      So basically...

      PPI = (passes x A) + (tackles x B) + (crosses x C) + (dribbles x D) + (blocks x E) + (shots on x F) - (shots off x G) + (goals for x H) - (goals against x I) + (appearance x J) + (assists x K) + (win bonus x L).

Where A, B, C, D, E are proportional to the expected increase in shots for each action, and F thru L are constants.

Basically, I suppose. Has to be more to it too, like something for cards and some stuff to evaluate keepers too.

I wonder what blocks include, and does this also suggest that clearances are worth nothing?

Yellow cards = a decrease in shots = less chance of scoring (and more shots conceded and more chance of conceding) as it says in the article so hence the negative contribution to PPI.

It looks like they're using a regressional model to derive a linear equation. That's kinda what I assumed the PPI index was. I did for a while start recording the PPI index increases every week to do some kind of brute force solution using the OPTA stats but I'm doing another FFS-related project instead.

The thing I'm wondering is, do they derive new values for the PPI index based on new data? Does it get refined every week? If so, it's going to be a bugger to crack.

            whaooo there.

It article tells us what some of the the multipliers are. If there are 0.034 shots per pass, then each pass is worth 0.034 of a shot. Likewise, a yellow card is worth -0.253 of a shot.

            From premierleaguefantasy.blogspot:
"Taking all forwards who scored more than 5 goals last year, we see that, on average a player took 6.1 shots per goal with 2.9 of them on target."

Assumign that this is similar to the correlation used byPPI, that means tha ta goal is worth about 3 shots on target. I wonder if the model works by assuming that a shot off target is worth minus 1/3 of a goal (or minus one shot) as the opportunity is wasted? If so the designer is an idiot. I suspect he's an idiot.

Also if there are 6.1 shots per goal, ther will be around 6 key passes per goal. So a key pass / assist may be worth around 1/6 of a goal or 0.5 of a shot on target

So, if a shot on target is worth 1, that gives us:

            Successful pass = 0.34
            Yellow card = -0.253
            Shot on target = 1.00
            Shot off target = -1.00
            Goal = 3.00
            Assist / key pass = 0.5

            QED?

              0.034*, on successful pass.

Yeah I know, but that's the implication if it is all linked to shots. Maybe there's a bonus for it leading directly to a goal.

              edit:
              successful pass should be 0.034

              edit of edit:
as I'm correlating to shots on target rather than total shots (2:1 ratio), factors for passing and yellow cards should be halved to 0.0152 and 0.126

It'll be way off Ginkapo as there are so many facotrs not included in it. Its more of a comparative thing or a startign point as PO says. look at tit this way, in PPI terms:

                  200 passes = 6 key passes = 3 shots on target = 1 goal

Unless you have the full set of factors, you can't possibly get deep enough to crack it. Even if you did do, how is that going to help other than helping predict the scores post game.

OK so you might be able to find a link which favours certain types of player, but the deviation within any particular game is going to skew it so much that it's becomes less than useful.

Minutes On Pitch - A player will receive more points if he plays the full 90 minutes, so if a player comes on for just five minutes and scores a goal, he would not get as many points for if he played 90 minutes and scored a goal.

        Didn't know that

you only gain 0.1 everytime he gains 0.2

so if you bought him at 6.2 (for example), and he rises to 6.4 during the week, you can sell him for 6.3
