Demba Ba signs off for the African Cup of Nations with a devastating forward display to send Man United to their second straight defeat. Anders Lindegaard’s clean sheet record is well and truly over, while Tim Howard nets Everton’s only goal as David Moyes’ side kicked off their double gameweek in downbeat fashion:

Demba Ba
A goal and assist for the Newcastle forward continued a remarkable Fantasy season that sees him sit second in the overall rankings with a score of 125 points, pre-bonus. Since he made his first start in gameweek 5, Ba has scored 15 goals and provided 3 assists and has so far picked up 18 bonus points, returning attacking points in ten of those fifteen first-team appearances. One of Ba’s best facets as a Fantasy player is his ability to produce whether home or away- 7 of his goals have come in front of his own fans, with 8 on the road; he’s the anti-Jonathan Walters, if you like. His departure for the African Cup of Nations is now imminent and with it will come a drop in price- considering he’s only 7.6 just now, it only makes Ba more of an outstanding bargain upon his return.

Ryan Taylor
With Gabriel Obertan failing to shake off a toe injury in time to face his former club, Taylor’s versatility afforded the full-back a place on the right flank. This allowed Alan Pardew to solve the dilemma of how to fit both Taylor and Davide Santon in the same first XI with the latter slotting in at left-back. Given that it worked to such devastating effect, the Newcastle boss may think twice about changing a winning formula ahead of the home game with QPR next gameweek. Certianly, post-match, the Newcastle boss admitted this was the best team that “was available“.

Yohan Cabaye
The former Lille man is coming to the fore as the second half of the season kicks into gear. An assist against Liverpool last week was followed by an outstanding free-kick against United as Newcastle shook of the lethargy of last week’s Anfield performance. It’s the first time this season that Cabaye has returned attacking points in back-to-back gameweeks and at 5.9, his set-piece duties and flourishing form could see him pick up plenty Fantasy suitors ahead of a run of games that reads: (QPR, ful, bla, AVL, tot, WOL).

Anders Lindegaard
With five clean sheets from his first five appearances, the Dane once again ousted David De Gea from the Man United first XI. His immaculate record was dismantled by a rampant Newcastle, though, as United failed to deal with their hosts’ determination and midfield dominance. Priced at 4.4, though, Lindegaard certainly seems just as capable as earning starts as the 6.4 priced Spaniard now but with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side facing four of the top six in the next seven gameweeks, including trips to Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs, their backline may struggle to produce the points.

Tim Howard
So far, it’s been a bit of a disaster for those Fantasy managers who loaded up on Everton players ahead of the double gameweek. A home game with Bolton offered plenty promise- Everton had conceded no more than a single goal in each of their last eight matches and with the Trotters out of sorts, a victory for David Moyes’ side was very much on the cards. Howard’s goal, a long kick downfield helped by the wind that bounced over stand-in keeper Adam Bogdan in the opposition net, summed up an unlikely night. Phil Jagielka, Leon Osman and Jack Rodwell were all forced off, with David Moyes anxiously awaiting the availability ahead of next Wednesday’s trip to White Hart Lane. Those who have plenty Spurs players, however, will be licking their lips in anticipation of more Toffees withdrawals.

Gary Cahill
While most of the recent talk has centred around his alleged departure to Chelsea, the centre-half hit the headlines for his on-pitch display last night. Cahill returned to goalscoring ways to secure a vital three points for Bolton, as his first goal since the opening day of the season lifted Owen Coyle’s side off the bottom of the table and helped the Trotters record back-to-back away wins. Priced at 5.2, he’s served a reminder of his capabilities and if Cahill’s proposed move to Stamford Bridge does, indeed, go ahead, he’ll no doubt attract the interest of plenty more than his current 18.7% Fantasy owners.

Chris Eagles
Afforded a first start since gameweek 15, Eagles got amongst the attacking points for the first time since the first week in November. Owen Coyle opted for a 4-5-1, with Eagles on the right and Martin Petrov on the opposite flank, utilising the pace of David N’Gog as a lone frontman. Eagles picked up an assist while N’Gog once again got amongst the points for the second away game in succession, netting the away side’s opener after they had gone behind to Tim Howard’s bizarre effort for the hosts.

*forgive me Jafa for I have sinned

I see a lot of WCs with cheap defences. Trust me, it's been rubbish these last few months playing McAuley, Wilkinson, Wes Brown etc.

City are looking sooo much tighter and have the fixtures. Buy one of K or Richards and chill knowing you're in good hands. I would then buy another City defender or another Pool defender.

Then we go cheap. Caulker, Naylor, Simpson, Santon, JEvans are all decent supplements. Rotate 3 for your last spot and leave a couple of heavy hitters to take up some serious pointage.

BAE is a good shout. The new Enrique at only 5 mill "ish" if you like.

Koscielny is not bad either, but the only Arsenal for me personally would be just Verminator. That's it.

It seems like a painful investment in buying expensive City defensive coverage but it will pay off in the long run. The more secure your defence is now the less FTs needed to fix it, particuarly when shuffling those big hitters in and out.

Not tempted by Gary Cahill BTW.

I know, it was never really a serious team, was just looking at how top heavy I could make my team with my WC.

I currently actually have Enrique, Walker and Kompany and will most likely stick with them. What is genuinely giving me problems though, is the choice between Mata, Silva or Nani...

    Can I ask a question?

If I use my wildcard, does this mean I am buying players at their current value? For instance, I originally bought Silva for 9.5m and now I decided to use my wildcard. Does this mean I am buying his current value which is 10.4m?

If that's the case, I'm losing money then if I use the wildcard. I only need to change a few players because there is not much of a change to do.

Tough one - Cabaye starts every game (though picked up a little knock last night), on some set pieces, creates chances but often plays deep and doesn't get big points hauls.

Ben Arfa on the other hand is capable of the big scores but isn't certain to start. If he does play, will be behind the striker so good chance of goals.

      Your call!

Defence is good if Brown is back.
I like Kompany and Enrique with good defenders for the third spot.
Big 3 in midfield is good. Problems are Surman (rotation), Sess (bad fixtures)
Frontline is what I'm going for so it is perfect.

I've got my wildcard plans sorted out. What do you reckon?

    Vorm | Krul
Shotton | Jose Enrique | Richards | Rangel | Simpson
    Nani | Silva | Bale | Sessegnon | Ferguson
Adebayor | Van Persie | Sturridge

    Left in the bank: 0.0m

Reasons to buy Ferguson are to (1) free up some cash for me to upgrade other areas and (2) I hardly ever use my third substitution. I'm looking forward to using 3-4-3 formation at all times. In some cases, I will revert to 4-3-3 depending on the fixtures but mostly and mainly 3-4-3.

I've previously used a strategy where I invested a balanced team where there were Vermaelen, Jones, Richards, Williams and Jose Enrique in defence, and it obviously didn't work out for me as I expected. The forwards industry are more better quality and priced than the defence industry so I've decided to go all in with all that attack.

Let me know what you think. Thanks.

How was your team balanced if you had 4 mid to high price defenders?

It was balanced because I had these defenders and only three high elite midfielders (Mata, Bale and Silva) with the other two being Dyer and Reo Coker. My forwards were Van Persie, Adebayor and Morison.

There you just said it actually , You had three high mids (bale was mid high at the time too) and 2 rags, Up front you had 1 high, 1 mid and 1 rag. In defence you had 4 mid/high and 1 rag. Balance?

i am thinking of the opposite from u.

defence get more and more points recently. look at kompany, terry, a.cole for example.
even verm did amazing a few GWs ago, and i am sure he will do that again real soon.

the recent GWs is a real disppointment for high-priced midfielder+fwds. I am thinking, as nani often get 2s and 3s for example, why not spend more in defence?? they are the most reliable source of pts. IMO

But these defenders are a little pricey. Even if you do own them, they don't really earn you points as much as the forwards do and some of them earn massive points at different times.

You mean like a rainy day? I don't think I have ever popped up a situation where my third substitution comes up to the pitch. That's why I guess it's good to have him because he's allowed me to get some cash and spend it.

Valencia - when they eventually track down Ashley Young his place will be at risk or be playing RB

I had him earlier in the season, the only real haul i got prob was versus Wigan when he scored. Other than that it is a pleasure to own him and watch him play and think he is my fantasy team. He is far from being a steady scorer and is not very explosive.

Good fixtures like you say. 4 assists 2 goals and 8 bonus points aint bad and he may be encouraged to get forward more with Ba out the picture.

Plus Raylor has been dropped or subbed a couple of games recently (was that done to injury anyone know?) so a few more of those freekicks wouldn't go amiss!

Oh dear, all our teams will be the same!

I'm going for Silva Bale Dempsey Walters Moses/O'Hara

Walters still trumps Sess for me, although it is annoying that he waited for me to sell him before hitting form.

Nani and Mata are poor value for me. That could change if they hit form but I prefer Bale and Dempsey's value.

I am planning to get rid of spurs on WC and load up with city. Interesting you both say Bale and Dempsey. I was thinking Nani and Dempsey, cos whenever United do well Nani is always involved in a FPL sense and scores well.

Drenthe and Berbatov are rotation risks but if they play (Berbatov seems more likely to trepan Drenthe) then they could be good picks. Not sure about Gaines because everyone aren't keeping too many clean sheets and he is not scoring enough points to justify his price tag IMO. Apart from that fine I think.

No City players is pretty conspicious and I don't think Baines is worth the price and with the way everton are playing. Same goes for Drenthe.
