Sunday’s goalfest brought the curtain down on the 2016/17 season, giving us time to assess the main performers in our Fantasy Football Scout leagues and cups over the last 10 months of domestic action.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

Jon Pears claimed top spot in the Fantasy Football Scout league in Fantasy Premier League after serving up 94 points in Gameweek 38.

Captain Harry Kane contributed 34 points and was joined by Manchester City trio Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane and Kevin De Bruyne, who delivered a combined 26 points in the 5-0 rout over Watford.

In his eleventh season as an FPL manager, John also has Philippe Coutinho, Gary Cahill and Petr Cech to thank for a further 20 points as he climbed into fifth spot in the overall standings. That’s a career-high rank, with his previous best placing 1,029 back in 2012/13.

David Brundish grabbed the runners-up spot after returning an outrageous 304 points in the final two Gameweeks of the season.

After picking up 186 points in Double Gameweek 37, David unleashed his Triple Captain chip on Harry Kane for Spurs’ 7-1 hammering of Hull Cuty and was rewarded with 51 points from the Golden Boot winner.

De Bruyne, Jesus and Coutinho were joined by Alexis Sanchez, Dele Alli, Ben Davies and Willy Caballero as David delivered 118 points to end the campaign as Australia’s number one FPL manager.

In his eighth year playing the game, David’s late rise in the rankings earned him eighth spot overall – bettering a previous high of around the 51,000-mark in 2014/15.

Jatin Arutla was the only other member of our top five to end the campaign with a three-figure tally.

India’s number one ranked manager called upon captain Kane along with Sanchez, Jesus, Alli and Davies, and also had Junior Stanislas, Pedro and Romelu Lukaku to thank as he picked up 105 points in Gameweek 38.

Josh King’s social media post, alerting us of his injury prior to yesterday’s teamsheets, clearly helped Jatin – he swapped out the Norwegian for his Cherries team-mate Stanislas with just one minute remaining before the Gameweek 38 deadline.

A ninth-place position betters Jatin’s top rank of around 69,000 (achieved in 2014/15) in his previous four seasons of playing.

In fourth place, Ogie Nolan had a number of the usual suspects on board.

The likes of captain Kane, Jesus, Sanchez, Alli, Coutinho and Caballero were joined by Christian Eriksen’s pair of assists away to Hull to help Ogie earn 97 points in the final round of fixtures.

He ended as the second-placed manager in Ireland on his way to 12th overall – this is the second successive season he’s finished inside the top 1,000 in a 10-year FPL career.

Mervyn Glasgow’s decision to opt for Diego Costa over Kane as his captain proved decisive as he dropped to fifth in the FFS league.

The Spurs fan also overlooked Kane with the armband for Double Gameweek 37, opting instead for Sanchez. He headed into Sunday’s finale in sixth place overall but dropped back to 14th after returning 78 points.

Mervyn also had Jesus, Alli, Sanchez, Caballero and Eden Hazard in his XI and opted to make no transfers for the final round of fixtures.

This was, nonetheless, his most impressive finish to date in 11 seasons of playing FPL – Mervyn’s previous high was 1,246 in 2011/12. He also claimed first place as Northern Ireland’s best performing FPL manager.

The Fantasy Football Scout Members League

World number six Ben Pearson rose to the top of our members’ league in the final day thanks to a score of 99 points.

Ben opted to captain Coutinho at home to Middlesbrough and was rewarded with a total of 20 points from the Liverpool playmaker, while the likes of Kane, Jesus, Sanchez, Eriksen and Caballero were also among his starting line-up.

City skipper Vincent Kompany and Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin proved the differential picks, combining for a further 21 points after both were in the goals yesterday afternoon.

Ben finished the season as Switzerland’s number one ranked manager to chalk up a career-high rank, having ended a very respectable 1,251 in the previous campaign.

The aforementioned David Brundish and Ogie Nolan took second and third respectively and were joined in the top five by Billy Ketsu and Kristian Rudd.

Sky Sports Fantasy Football

Congratulations go to Matthew Jones, aka Numb, who finished top of our Sky Sports league with a total of 2,971 points – sitting just 28 points off the summit, he ended second in the overall rankings.

Niall Murphy grabbed the Scout league runners-up spot with 2,958 points, which was enough to claim third overall.

Nigel Dodds’ total of 2,936 points was third in the Scout league and joint-sixth in the world, while Ian Cox – aka Cheesoid – (2,929 points, eighth overall) and Oliver Brown (2,917 points, tenth overall) complete our top five performers.

Sky Sports have pledged to pay out £1,000 to the winner of our Scout league, while our top five will also share £1,000 between them as we also won the League of Leagues for the fourth successive season.

The Fantasy Football Scout Cups

Simon Bennett, aka Sleepysi, is the new winner of the Fantasy Football Scout open-to-all competition after defeating former FPL runner-up Kelvin Travers or “K3lvin” on overall rank alone.

Both were tied on 103 points in Gameweek 38, though Sleepysi emerged victorious as he ended the campaign in 460th spot, whereas K3lvin came in around the 57,000-mark.

The duo both went into Sunday’s showdown owning a handful of shared picks, including Kane, Jesus, Sanchez and Alli. In terms of final differentials, K3lvin had Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Leroy Sane, Ben Davies and Hazard while Sleepysi had Eriksen, Coutinho and Pedro on board.

Ultimately, it came down to a question of captains and K3lvin’s decision to opt for Sanchez – and not match Sleepysi’s choice of Kane – was the deciding factor.

Sleepysi is the 14th winner of our open-to-all cup and joins a growing list that includes donnellc, Jonty, Gribude, Goonerdave, Ninja_Fit_Saints, sleeping master, Mch, Wild Rover, Tdubb05 , CMIFLFC, Mark, Leon Harris and A Manager Has No Name, who edged past Moin in our first FFS open-to-all cup of 2016/17 earlier in the year.

In the third-fourth place play-off, Choppers13 (aka Adam Hopcroft) defeated My Pretty Pony (aka Peter Kouewenberg) by 92 points to 90.

Our FFS Members’ cup also concluded on Sunday and was another hard-fought battle, with Malaikat Jahad getting the better of Kristoffer Asp or “Aspern” by 89 points to 88.

Malakait’s final transfer – swapping Alli for Eriksen – almost cost him the crown and came at the loss of two FPL points, while Aspern’s final trade, which saw Hazard replaced by Coutinho, gained him a single point in a very narrow defeat.

Malakait joins a cast of former FFS Members Cup winners that also includes Waltzingmatildas, Fuzzy Dunlop, Kippax Kickers, Acquafresca, Trigg and Ola Svanheld.

In the third-fourth place play-off, Barwood (aka Steve Barwood) defeated Dynamic (aka Connor Richardson) by 106 points to 94 to win a £50 Amazon voucher.

Both cup winners receive a £200 Amazon voucher, while the runners-up can console themselves with a £100 Amazon voucher. The victors in the third/fourth place play-offs collected £50 Amazon vouchers.

FanDuel Beat The Scout Contest

We also offered the chance to win cash in a final day FanDuel contest.

Essentially, everyone who bettered the score produced by the team of Mark and Jonty in the Beat The Scout contest was entered into a draw.

Razor500 was the manager to emerge victorious after a hectic Sunday afternoon – he receives £50 cash for his day’s work.

He scored an impressive total of 334.75 points for Sunday’s matches – Spurs pair Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min supplied 97.75 points between them, while Liverpool duo Philippe Coutinho and Georginio Wijnaldum chipped in with a combined 84.75 points.

Congratulations to all those involved and here’s hoping to another successful season next time around – roll on August 12.

Mignolet's end of season form is a big reason why we're in the CL. He was immense in many games. Whether that's good enough, who knows. I'm in favour of Mignolet+Karius combo unless an exceptional GK is available at a reasonable price.

Tells you in the help section.

"In a league with classic scoring, teams are ranked based on their total points in the game. You can join or leave a league with classic scoring at any point during the season.

In the event of a tie between teams, the team who has made the least amount of transfers will be positioned higher. Any transfers made using a wildcard will not count towards total transfers made."

Awful atrocity very hard to defend against this kinda thing but considering British intelligence has most of these guys names why not entertain them without trial

They had no problem doing it in Northern Ireland in the 70s during the troubles

In general the western democracy's in Europe have gone soft and lost their belly for the fight that might be needed to fight this kinda thing

During the troubles Maggie Thatcher even sent the SAS into Northern Ireland who carried out shoot to kill missions on the IRA which arguably was one of the main catalysts for bringing them to the negotiation table

But this current treat is a different animal and can not be negotiated with so lock people involved in this kinda thing and throw away the key and start clipping them looks like a good start to me

If only it was that easy. I agree, bring back the Fergie days. Well and truly 😀

In all seriousness, it's van Gaal who is to blame for wasting vast amounts of £€$ on players who mostly didn't work out, & of course dinosaur Moyes for spending nearly £30m on Fellaini alone, more than his release clause apparently. Mourinho's early signings have been a major improvement. Bailly in particular - worth every penny.

Players that didn't work out = di Maria, Depay, Schneiderlin, Falcao (albeit loan) etc. I'll leave Martial out for now as he was literally the best outfield player at the club last season. Rojo was arguably his next best signing?

Rooney won't go to Everton I wouldn't think - they won't pay his monstrous wages and I think he'd rather sit on the bench than have a pay cut from £200k+/week to half that, especially as he's coming to the end of his career.

Not sure if this has been shared on here, but the top post on r/soccer today is a brilliant, detailed analysis of promotion to the top flight :

    https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/6ct6ey/predicting_promoted_club_survival_rates_in_the/

I think it will be useful from an FPL point of view.

    tl;dr version is :
    - Newcastle & Brighton are going to mount a good challenge to stay in the PL this season.
    - Huddersfield/Reading are probably going to get smashed in the PL. Hud especially, as they have a negative goal difference in the championship. Could be some massive FPL scores against them if they qualify through playoffs.

Brighton are going straight back down.

    2. Enzo the Baker
      • 12 Years

Massive props to u/CheapoSam who is the author of that analysis.

More details here from the post : What does this mean for the 2016/17 promoted clubs?

Newcastle are in a strong position, and history/form suggests that they will go on and gain a foothold in the PL. There is only a small chance they will be relegated based on their league finish, Total Goal scored, % of team goals scored by top scorer, and given their history as a PL side. Make no mistake, this is a very good Newcastle side, who should go on and become a fully fledged PL outfit over the next few years.

Brighton are well positioned to make a really good go at staying in the PL beyond 1 year. Yes they are a first time visitor, but first timers can go on to establish in the PL. Generally Runners up perform similarly to Champions, so given that this Brighton side matched the previous best tally achieved by a Runner Up, and were only a point behind Newcastle, the signs are there that this is a decent team. They were reliant on Glenn Murray more than Newcastle relied on Gayle, but not enough to make them one dimensional. Glenn Murray's age is a concern, but he done the business for Palace when landed in the PL in 13/14.

Reading and Huddersfield are both in for a whole lot of pain, whoever goes up. Neither side have a strong Goal Difference which suggests that they will struggle to pick up many points next year. History does not favour teams from the playoffs either, and with Reading holding the worst defence in the history of promoted teams, I would not bet against them going straight back down. Alarmingly Huddersfield have not scored anywhere near enough goals to make them look anything like staying longer than 1 year in the PL. Neither side have scored enough goals, and this is a big worry. It is possible if Huddersfield win promotion, they could go down with a record low points total. Whoever goes up, I would say, make an almost irrefutable case for coming straight back down.

They're overachieving. Newcastle should have walked that league. It's the poorest Championship I've seen for a while. Having said that, I guess that means they aren't overachieving, they're just lucky everyone else is crap this year.

Or maybe I just think they're crap because I've been watching closer than I normally do due to being a Villan. Who knows.

Messing around with a next season draft, obviously don't know prices so will have to downgrade in some places but will try to keep close to this all things considered. Obviously will be on fpl vacation soon enough but would like to do at least some of the ground work for next season beforehand.

Why does everyone go so cheap in goal? I would have thought that next season with all the Top 7 playing in Europe and a heavy Christmas / New Year schedule you are better going with a secure GK who gets games - especially at around £5.5m for a Lloris / De Gea / Cech. 140 pts for around £5.5m is good value IMO.

Better chance for monster hauls with cheap keepers, perhaps I'll do one 5.5m keeper and one 4.5m keeper once I've seen the fixtures lists.

The top team goalies don't get save points and bps though. Heaton got more than a few 10 point games.

          • 9 Years

Aside from Heaton (who is not going to be as cheap next season) then who are the top GKs:

          - Lloris (143)
          - Courtois (141)
          - De Gea (136)
          - Cech (134)
          - Forster (134)

All priced around £5.5m. Try and find a midfielder or striker who can deliver that sort of return for the same price. As I said, rotation will be more prevalent next season because of the World Cup meaning games get squeezed in. You want nailed players who won't be rotated. GK looks the best place for that.

            5.5 midfielders:

            King (178)

            Capoue (131)

Thought so, Vardy going under the radar from what I've seen on here, if he continues getting a goal and max baps vs the smaller sides then he's surely worth the outlay, issue would be over who though.

    SAM ALLARDYCE STATEMENT.

In some ways, this has been a very difficult decision to make but in others it has been a simple one.
I will always be grateful to Crystal Palace and Steve Parish for giving me the opportunity to go out with my head held high having helped keep the Club in the Premier League.
More than, they gave me a chance of rebuilding my reputation after what happened with England. I felt I needed another shot at being a Premier League manager and in helping to achieve something. As I said last weekend, Palace gave me the chance of rehabilitation.
That’s why it’s hard walking away now. I think the Club are heading in the right direction with a hugely supportive board of directors, a great squad of players and some of the most passionate fans I’ve ever met. It’s been a privilege to have worked here for the past five months.
But there comes a time when you have to take stock of what direction you want your life to take - and that’s been the simple part for me.
I want to be able to savour life while I’m still relatively young and when I’m still relatively healthy enough to do all the things I want to do, like travel, spend more time with my family and grandchildren without the huge pressure that comes with being a football manager.
This is the right time for me. I have no ambitions to take another job, I simply want to be able to enjoy all the things you cannot really enjoy with the 24/7 demands of managing any football club, let alone one in the Premier League.
Steve Parish has been superb during our conversations today. I know it came as a shock to him that I would walk away but our discussions have been incredibly civilised with no recriminations and no fall-out.
This is not about transfer targets, finances or anything along those lines. This is me taking the decision I believe is right for my family and myself.
I would like to thank everybody for their messages of support since the news broke. I’ve no doubt I will miss management but I certainly have no regrets at this decision.

I'm talking about back then, when BFS was there, we were a shite 3rd division side. We have been up there, 1st tier and had a decent short-term side then. But the truth is Millwall are a yo-yo 3rd/2nd tier club and always will be. Enjoy the rare good times etc...

You Bristol Rovers? Ah, Eastville... went there with 'wall early 80's, bit of a fight... lol 😉

        Hi all,

Does anyone here manage 2 teams on FPL? Is it considered cheating?

I invest so much time in this I just think it might be worthwhile having 2 selection headaches.

        Thoughts?

Just did a bit of analysis about switching between 2 midfielders from the same team based on my experience this season. There were occasions when I would try to switch out Firmino for Mane, Alli for Eriksen, etc. and I wanted to see if it actually worked.

        Coutinho : 6 games for me @ PPG : 5.5
Full season PPG in FPL : 5.5

        Mane : 5 games for me @ PPG : 4.8
Full season PPG in FPL : 5.8

        Firmino : 8 games for me @ PPG : 4.3
Full season PPG in FPL : 5.1

        Alli : 13 games for me @ PPG : 6.1
Full season PPG in FPL : 6.1

        Eriksen : 10 games for me @ PPG : 5.4
Full season PPG in FPL : 6.1

The lesson for me is : Just pick one of these guys and don't switch !

I haven't been able to beat the season-long PPG for any of these players. This means that I am not good at chasing points by switching between them. It might be different for other FPL managers but next season I'll try to pick Coutinho and Alli and just stick with them for stretches of 8-10 GWs unless they get injured or average less than 4 PPG.

Shout-out to http://anewpla.net for pulling up PPG based on team ID. If you're doing a similar analysis for your team, remember to find PPG by looking at the "Avg. Points (base)" column because it doesn't include 2x points for captaincy. (Including captaincy would artificially inflate your PPG if you ever captained Alli, Coutinho and gang).
