John Terry is facing a potentially lengthy period out of the Chelsea team with a chronic nerve problem in his right leg according to a number of unconfirmed reports this morning. The Daily Mail broke the news late last night and it has since been followed up with numerous stories in the mainstream media. At the time of writing, Chelsea FC have yet to confirm or deny the extent of the injury.

The Daily Mail suggests that there will be a meeting today between Terry and a team of specialists to discuss their next steps. The injury has been lingering around since the end of last season and Terry had admitted that he was carrying it during this summer’s World Cup. But it is the length of his absence that will worry Fantasy Football Managers, with Terry confirming that it will be at least a couple of weeks before he plays again…

“After games I am in agony and not sleeping at all. I used to play with pain at seven out of 10. Now? It’s 10 out of 10. I need to take a few weeks rest, see a couple of specialists and solve the problem.”

This will unquestionably be a blow to a Chelsea defence who leaked three goals at home to Sunderland on Sunday without him in the side and doubts will be raised as to whether, minus Terry’s reliable presence, the rest of the defenders are worth their high transfer values in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. With Terry in the team they have managed 7 clean-sheets this season and after Sunday’s woes and with some very tough forthcoming fixtures (bir, new, EVE, tot, MUN, ars) this could be a worrying time for Ancelotti’s men. In their captain’s absence though, the likes of Branislav Ivanovic, Jose Bosingwa and (when back from injury) Alex, should all be counted on as nailed on starters, but may well need attacking points to justify the required outlay.

With the possibility of a leaky backline, the pressure will now be on big guns Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda to perform at the other end of the pitch. Malouda in particular had a fantastic start to the season, and is still the second highest scoring midfielder in the FPL game on 73 points, but in recent weeks has only been picking-up scraps. Drogba is also still flying high and has the second most points for a forward on 76, but has failed to score a goal since October 6. Defensive frailty for Chelsea could put increased emphasis on attack, so now might be the time for these expensive additions to step-up a gear and recapture some of their early season form.

Another worry and a factor that could affect results is the lack of natural leaders on the pitch, with Terry and Frank Lampard injured, Michael Essien suspended for the next two games and Didier Drogba clearly still lacking form and fitness. The shock home defeat to Sunderland could well be just the start of a decidedly dodgy patch for the Champions.

*edit* Chelsea FC have confirmed the Terry story with an official update on their site and say that the centre-back will see specialists to try and solve the problem. Although the club have yet to confirm many Fantasy Football Manager’s fears that it could be a long time before we see Terry back in action, as no time-scale has been put on his injury.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

They are as likely to keep a clean sheet as anyone with their 3 defensive mids.

Their back 4 is a bit of a rotation minefield though.

Thinking of transfering Malouda out (not sure to who yet), but I've had him since the start at 9.5M. Now he's 10.4M I'd only get 9.9M if I sell him.

Is it worth the drop in cash, as I may not be able to afford him back later? or do I hold tight for a little longer and maybe loose even more points while waiting?

ok Goose, 1 more week and if he fails, I'm gonna go all Buggu on ya. ;P Trust me I get what your saying. I've kept faith in him too, Done the same with Fabs and Bale and eventually they have come good but look at it this way, Bale got me naff all for 8 weeks whereas if I had gone with any number of other players during that time I could have had a much better return . Brunt, Adam, even feckin Darren Fletcher. One of my better weeks was the other week there when I had what I thought was my weakest team of the season out, but it worked. This game is stranger thanthe real thing sometimes.

      It's a difficult one...

      Both offer some attacking threat.

Both have decent fixtures (although Uniteds are better short term)

Vidic is the more nailed on starter of the two.

Man City won't concede many with Mancini's negativity.

I'd probably go with Vidic myself but can't put together a strong enough argument why he is worth the extra cash.

Think I am settling on a Malouda -> Nani swap this week, although Rooney is tempting me if fit. It would mean losing either Tevez or Drogba for a 4 point hit which I is pretty stupid.

I'm playing Fabs, Bale and VdV in the North London derby. To say that I am hoping for a goalfest is an understatement.

    Nani or Fabs captain?

Any obvious changes medium-long term needed to my team? I am quite happy with it at the mo having done El Mummy > Bardsley this week.

    Foster - Robinson
    Boswinga - Bardsley - Williamson - Coleman - Konchesky
Fabregas - Van der Vaart - Nani - Brunt - Yaya
    Drogba - Tevez - Carroll

    £1m cash

Only one I'm not too happy about now is Yaya - any suggestions? I would go with Nzog but his fixtures are a bit rubbish. Henderson? Lee (Bolton)? Adam? Keep Yaya?

Also, any suggestions on the defence (given my financial constraints!). The other thing in the back of my mind is to swap Drogba for Rooney if Drogba's bad form continues and Rooney's season starts properly.

    Thanks!

    Kolarov debate:

    in his last 2 seasons

    69 starts
    7 goals
    6 assists

ashley cole played around 56 games and got 5 goals 6 assists

vidic played around 55 games and got 5 goals 1 assist

obviously cant compare clean sheets as he wasnt at man city but from an attacking perspective he looks good value

That's IF mancini lets him go forward. He's a very defensive manager who keeps a tight rein on the midfielders, never mind the full backs. Total goals for City defenders this year so far : Zero. Assists : 1.

Chelsea next 5 fixtures look a bit horrid considering their form too.

I'm thinking about the unthinkable. Dropping Drogba. For wait for it, Kevin Davies whom I think will get a bigger score in the next 5 weeks. There I said it. Rooney is tempting or Berbatov or even Torres given their fixtures too but all injury prone or unpredictable.

I would drop Malouda instead but there's no other midfielder (for Bolton who will get big points - it all goes through their forwards). Is there any other midfielder apart from Nani who is destined for big points in coming GW's? Silva is half tempting and Gerrard is meh.

Ask yourself 1 question. Why wouldn't Rooney start? Injured? Nope. Berba and Hernandez playing well enough to keep him out? Nope. Tough away game? Nope. Match fit? Possibly, he'll have been training for weeks. He'll play 60 mins and get a load of points in that time IMO.

Here's my review of Gameweek 13:

    Aston Villa 2 - 2 Man Utd
Stewart Downing has joined Titus Bramble in the “used to be the laughing stock of the league and is now actually quite decent” group.

    Man City 0 - 0 Birmingham
Mancini is planning on replacing Adebayor and Santa Cruz with Dzeko. Can he not see what he’s doing wrong here? There all the same players. Have you ever seen them in the same room together? Guessed not. The only difference between them and their varying levels of success is the roles they play in their teams. Man City are not currently set up to get the most out of a big man up front. They’re set up to get the most out of Carlos Tevez, and rightly so. He’s the man to build the attack around. Not Dzeko. Get Dzeko and they’ll have to change the whole system. That won’t work because it’s really hard to change an entire system, Dzeko will play badly, rot on the bench, and Mancini (or whoever is in charge a few next summer) will try selling him for way less than they bought him, and replace him with another big man for way more money. Probably Ibrahimovic.

    Newcastle 0 - 0 Fulham
Poor old Damien Duff. I always really liked him. Now he’s filling in at left back for Fulham. Remember when Chelsea bought him, and he was really good? He still can be really good. I like him. I hope he starts playing really well again; he’s had a tough time with injuries.

    Tottenham 4 - 2 Blackburn
Play Van der Vaart centrally behind the main striker in a 4-5-1? Bale can’t affect the game as much. Switch to a 4-4-2 with Bale rampaging up the left wing? Van der Vaart doesn’t score. I cannot believe that Tottenham are in such a good position. Whatever ever about the squad not being strong enough, especially at the back, the fact is they have two superstars worth tens of millions playing in their team. It must be the “bestest-hardest” problem a manager can have – trying to get the best out of two superstars at once. These two would walk into every single team in the league almost (they’d at least challenge at Arsenal and Chelsea for a start), and Tottenham, sort of by accident, have ended up with them. Bale definitely was a stroke of luck, being forced to play him last season because of injuries, and Van der Vaart, Spurs got him almost by default because nobody else seemed to bother to put in a stronger bid. What were United thinking? Harry’s got a problem to get the best out of them, but it’s a problem almost every manager in the league would love to have.

    West Ham 0 - 0 Blackpool
Blackpool really look like they’re going to get relegated.

    Wigan 1 - 0 West Brom
N’Zogbia not only has a class name, but is also a class act. If United got N’Zogbia off Wigan for the same price they got Valencia he’d be a bargain. Only thing I’d worry about is that he wouldn’t be able to be as much of a glory on a better team, but I still think he’d be good.

    Wolves 2 - 3 Bolton
Bolton, the team I support, are just fantastic this season. I genuinely love all of them, and the way Owen Coyle has them playing is magnificent, because he has them play so close to their maximum. With those players, I don’t think many managers could get as many points as Coyle has.

    Stoke City 2 - 0 Liverpool
If Rafa were still in charge, I don’t think they’d be where they are now.

    Everton 1 - 2 Arsenal
If Ramsey comes back from injury and continues the way he was developing before it, he and Wilshere could be so brilliant in midfield together. I can already see the articles being written about how they never missed Fabregas after he left because of these two young British lads. And if they grow up together and play together for the next, say five years, they’ll be an amazing combination.

    Chelsea 0 - 3 Sunderland
It was widely reported over the weekend that Paulo Ferreira seems to be Chelsea’s third choice right back and also their fourth choice centre back. I would suggest that Paulo Ferreira is either their as third choice right back or their fourth choice centre back. If he’s both, then that means there exists for Chelsea some preferred defensive formation whereby Ivanovic plays at right back and centre back. This strikes me as a tad strange, as I didn’t realise Branislav Ivanovic, as good a defender as the guy is, had added ubiquity to his repertoire of skills. And if he is indeed ubiquitous, why hasn’t Championship Manager listed it as one of his talents? Personally, I don’t think old Paulo is so bad that Chelsea would rather play with ten men and a three man defensive with Branislav covering two positions at once. Especially up against, say, World Player of the Year nominee Asamoah Gyan. And Danny Welbeck. In fact, scrap what I just said. I think Ferreira should be their third choice right back and their fourth choice centre back. Jeffrey Bruma, a man deemed good enough to play for World Cup finalists, should be their fourth choice centre back, but instead he’s sitting on the bench. In reality, he’s probably closer to their eighth choice centre back, with Ancelotti preferring to field a defence made up entirely out of Branislav Ivanovics. Like a Serbian version of “We all dream of a team of Gary Breens”.

Lol, Nice read though, Thanks. And I can see Arsenal winning the league this year, if Fabregas stays fit that is. They seem to be pretty consistent this year (Bar West Brom and Newcastle games). Actually I take that back there not at all consistent but I can still see them grabbing the title. And then Fabregas will stay and they will be a force to be reckoned with.

    Money or Points..
What do you think, is it worth to do elmo => kolarov with point hit this week or wait till next week?

If I wait, I will lose 0.1 value and have to play
Coleman, Enrique and Jara (or try to put elmo there and hope he's not gonna take 1 pointer)

If I take point hit I don't lose value and play
Coleman, Jara/Enrique and Kolarov (and need city clean sheet or Kolarov assisst at least to be really really happy..)

Is anyone actually keeping Malouda in their team for this week? The league leaders are away at Birmingham. And Chelsea did OK on their last awayday at Blackburn, I recall.
I think I'll keep Malouda in my side for a bit longer.
Is it a brave man that swims agains the tide? Or a foolish one?

        Time will tell, I suppose.
But a tidal wave of Malouda sales is on the way this week, going by the comments on this site.
