Arsenal made their first raid into the summer transfer market earlier this week by acquiring defender Sead Kolasinac from German outfit Schalke 04.

Arriving in north London on a free transfer, the 23-year-old reckons his versatility will be key in light of Arsene Wenger’s decision to switch to a 3-4-2-1 formation in the latter stages of 2016/17:

“There are different positions, but I think left-back is where I feel most comfortable. I can play as part of a three at the back too, or further forward. I’m really flexible”.

And the Gunners boss was quick to back his new acquisition adjusting to the English top-flight:

“He’s very compact as a player, very strong and determined in the challenges. He’s good in the air as well, so overall I believe he has all the attributes to adapt to English football. The game here is very demanding physically on the commitment front and he has the ingredients to adapt to that.”

The History

Born in Karlsruhe, Kolasinac joined his home-town club aged eight, before stints in the youth set-ups at 1899 Hoffenheim, Stuttgart and Schalke 04.

Promoted to the Schalke first XI in 2012, he managed just one goal and three assists in 69 appearances in his first four seasons in the Bundesliga. Last term, however, Kolasinac was utilised as both a full-back and a wing-back and went on to produce three goals and five assists in 25 league outings.

On the international scene, Kolasinac made his debut for Bosnia – his parents’ homeland – in 2013, and has since been selected on 17 occasions.

The Prospects

Handily, Wenger also went on to inform the club’s official website of his plans for the new boy next season:

“What he will give us is the fact that he’s a player who can give assists, who can go forward, who can contribute good crosses. It’s very important that we have that as well, because we have Kieran Gibbs, we have Nacho Monreal and we have him. But Nacho plays a lot now in central defence and in a three-man system I see him in there. So overall, I think [Kolasinac] can contribute a lot to help us to be more dangerous going forward.”

Having won eight of their nine matches – including an FA Cup final triumph over Chelsea – when operating with the 3-4-2-1 system, there’s every chance that Arsenal will continue with the same tactics in the initial stages, at least.

As evidenced by the likes of Marcos Alonso and Kyle Walker last season, the recent trend of wing-backs is ideal for Fantasy Premier League managers on the look-out for attack-minded defenders.

Set to be listed as a defender across the Fantasy games, Kolasinac boasts the output to suggest that he could be the next in line to benefit. A starting price of 6.0 is expected, though, with Chelsea’s Alonso likely to come in around the 7.0-mark, that could still represent strong value for money.

Among the Arsenal contingent, a switch to the three-man backline for Monreal could be bad news for Rob Holding’s pitch-time, with Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny surely likely starters. The Frenchman is suspended for the first two Gameweeks, however.

And if Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain claims the right wing-back berth ahead of Hector Bellerin, then Kolasinac would essentially be the only out of position Arsenal defender on offer next term.

With Gibbs linked with a switch away, Monreal’s attacking numbers illustrate just why Wenger has made the move – Kolasinac averaged a key pass every 90 minutes last season compared with the Spaniard’s 262.8. Tellingly, in 36 appearances Monreal made just six successful crosses in the previous campaign.

In terms of goal threat, there’s no doubt that an average of 121.7 minutes per attempt needs to be improved, although it’s worth bearing in mind that only 13 of Kolasinac’s 24 league starts were as a wing-back in 2016/17.

While his impact in the final third is the main headline here, the Bosnian international’s defensive displays could help improve a Gunners rearguard that managed just 13 clean sheets in 2016/17. He made more successful tackles (69) than any Schalke player and placed second when it came to interceptions (81).

Meanwhile, his frequency of successful tackles (30 minutes to Monreal’s 50) was far superior, while he was very similar to the Spaniard for minutes per clearance, block and interception (CBI) by 14.8 minutes to 14.5.

The Gunners’ failure to clinch a top four spot could also be to our advantage. Should Wenger prioritise the league and rotate his regulars around Europa League fixtures instead, then Kolasinac has all the ingredients to suggest that he could be the next wing-back to find a place in our squads.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Could Arsenal be a better source of Fantasy points next season than they were this season?

With no Champions League fixtures for the Gunners rotation will surely be limited, with a B team likely to be fielded early on in the Europa competition and focus squarely on the Premier League.

Also with Kolašinac joining Arsenal’s ranks could this be an indicator that their defensive assets are once again worth investing in?

If, as expected, the Arsenal backline is priced below players at Chelsea and Spurs, could the likes of Kolašinac be the strongest options for those looking for elite defenders?

But what of Sanchez? Could his rumoured move to Man City lessen Arsenal’s attacking appeal? Or does it allow cheaper assets to secure a place in our teams and provide regular points hauls?

Hope Holding (priced at 4.5m) gets a full time spot in a back three, with Monreal & Bellerin replacement as wingbacks.

      Sadly I think he'll be 5.0m

Tbf with Wenger you nearly always knew where you stood in terms of rotation, he isn't the worst in this department.
I fully expect Alexis to move on (to FPL managers detriment) and this should open up a few cheaper assets for us to look at, Iwobi possibly could emerge and their defence is always worth some investment, so with a long way to honit all comes down to fixtures and ins and outs in the window.

To be honest Alexis was very good to us last season when you tally his returns, especially as captain. IMO, this year we'll have good value in Cech (5.5m), Holding (5m), Kolacec (5.5m), Ramsey (7.5m), Ozil (8.5m), Giroud (8.5m) and best of all Iwobi (6.5m).

Ramsey price will be interesting for me - 7.5 to 8 I guess. If Wenger sticks with the 3-4-2-1/3-4-1-2, he has a lot of freedom to make late runs into the box. When budgets are tight at the start of the season he could represent nice value.

Kolasinac if 5.5 for me. If Sanchez leaves, will let the formation settle before plumping for an attacker. I'm not convinced Holding will get enough game time despite his huge potential.

Can anyone explain to me why United needed another centre half when it seems to me that this is one area where they were quite strong (17 cs) all season?
Surely 31m was better spent on creativity within that team if JM will allow it

Agree. Unless he is planning 3 at the back? For some reason Mourinho hates Blind as well - if I were Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton I would buy Blind if he was available - will do a good job at CB, LB or in CM.

CS numbers were good but that didn't just come down to defence, it was the structure of the team in general.

He doesn't trust Smalling, not sure what he thinks of Jones but injuries make him impossible to rely upon so then you have Bailly, Rojo and Blind. I can understand going for another CB, I could see at least one of Smalling and Jones leaving, if not both.

Also, Lindelof can play RB, very useful to have.

Personally think this would be Utd's best team:

        De Gea
        Valencia Lindelof Bailly Blind
        Herrera Fellaini
        Mata Pogba Mkhi
        Morata

I would agree with this, I see them as 'squad' players if they are not sold. For me something like the Bale/Morata move would make them a force once again.

          I'd probably have went

          DDG
          Valencia Lindelof Bailly Blind
          Herrera Pogba
          Mkhi Mata Martial
          Morata

          if they should go 4-2-3-1

But a 433 is very possibly next season if they sign another CM. Plus that can free up Pogba further.

Yea I get all that and honestly it makes sense, it's just as a United fan I think we deserve a more expansive style of play.
What's to lose at this stage?
Finishing 6th might have as well been 16th to me, we got lucky somewhat against a poor Ajax team in the final to give us a ECL spot, granted that win was all about the eternal journey of Europa.
It's just as fan Im thinking to myself that our budget may be somewhat limited (100m -150m) and have we just spent a decent amount of it on 'another' def when that could have been spent on goals/assists elsewhere.
          It's out of pure frustration I post or am I missing the whole JM thinking;
"Now that we have Lindelof we can play more openly as I have confidence in the boy to keep us safe in the back while I exploit the real potential in this team?"

          1. Somalion
            • 15 Years
            8 years, 5 months ago

Well I think buying him actually does show your final point, Mou wants a strong backline across all positions so he can open up a bit imo.

Also, as for the budget, with United's turnover they can spend a lot more than that should they wish. Plus take into account sales, players will be sold and most likely those funds reinvested.

A CB, a CM, a winger/attacking mid and a striker, that's what I think United will go for. Some folks saying LB but with all of Shaw, Darmian, Blind and Rojo available I can't see if that would be a priority (could be wrong of course).

Morata looking more and more likely so see what develops there. Then there's the talk of James going the same way as Morata etc. Plenty of time for developments yet.

I get the Jones bit, pity as he was to be the new 'Terry' but for me Smalling was our best player in 15/16 and I felt early days that JM had made his mind up about him and that was that, I think some of the bashing in his case is unwarranted and based on nothing really.

This game is pretty entertaining. That free kick from miles out that hit the post was so good

      Serge Gnabry signing for Bayern.

Think Arsenal may have made a bit of a balls up on that one.

Solanke is crap. Missed a sitter and nearly hit the corner flag 5mins after. I can see why Chelsea let him go.

      Bring on Armstrong

Lookman has been player of the tournament for England imo.

A load of tap ins flattering to deceive? I don't know this is the only game I've watched. But he looks poor to me. Lacking technique

Kolasinac likely to be in my team anything less than 6m. Unless there are 2 comparable WBs for 5.5m.

I know England weren't brilliant against Scotland at Euro '96, but they got the job done and I think the key difference between that and yesterday wasn't just the talent we had, but the authority and experience we had in the likes of Adams, Ince, Shearer etc.

Nowadays you look at England and question who is actually leading that team. Joe Hart?!

England are embarrassing. Should have beat Scotland 4-0 but they are pre madonnas. Think they are invincible because they beat Slovenia. Flicks and showing off.

Showed when they actually try they can do it. Scoring easily after they were up against it. They need an attitude and reality check

End to end stuff. More entertaining than some of the crup the senior team dish out.
