Brighton and Hove Albion made their first move in the summer transfer market late last month with the acquisition of playmaker Pascal Gross from German outfit FC Ingolstadt 04 for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old arrives at the Amex Stadium on a four-year deal and, according to manager Chris Hughton, had no shortage of suitors to choose from:

“We are delighted that Pascal has opted to sign for us, amid interest from a number of clubs from the Premier League and across Europe, and I am pleased to welcome him to the club. He offers something different to our existing midfielders, as an attacking midfielder in a more advanced position, operating behind the forward line; he will give us a different and new option going into the new season.”

The History

Gross joined the youth set-up at 1899 Hoffenheim as a 17-year-old back in 2008.

After managing a mere five first-team appearances in three seasons, he made his way to second-tier outfit Karlsruhe, where he quickly established himself as a regular.

Three goals and a pair of assists in 24 first-team appearances earned Gross a move to Ingolstadt in the summer of 2012 but he struggled to make his presence felt, providing just four goals and five assists in 59 appearances over his first two seasons.

The 2014/15 campaign proved a pivotal one for player and club alike, as Gross steered Ingolstadt into the Bundesliga on the back of seven goals and 23 assists in 34 appearances.

A quick glance at his output – one goal and four assists in 2015/16, followed by five goals and four assists last term – suggests that Gross struggled to adjust to the step up, yet the underlying numbers shed far more light on his abilities.

In each of his two seasons in the Bundesliga, Gross created more scoring chances (95 and 98) than any player, which is all the more impressive bearing in mind that Ingolstadt suffered the ignominy of relegation in 2016/17.

On the international scene, he turned out for the Germany U18 and U19 sides on a total of 12 occasions, scoring twice.

The Prospects

As mentioned in our article on Brighton’s promoted squad, Hughton mainly utilised a 4-4-2 set-up last season but the Seagulls boss has conceded that he’s already eyeing up a one-man frontline in a bid to tighten up in the top-flight:

“I think it’s difficult to go through a season playing 4-4-2, particularly as a new club. Leicester play it generally, but they are more established. I would see myself at times playing it, but also very much a 4-4-1-1.”

Although he’s versatile enough to play on either flank and in a central midfield berth, Hughton’s words suggest it is far more likely that Gross has been purchased to take up the role in “the hole†behind a lone striker.

Crucially from a Fantasy perspective, the new boy’s exceptional delivery means that he is favourite be handed set-piece duties, while Gross has also shown in the past that he’s more than capable of tucking away spot-kicks, too.

In terms of creativity, his minutes per key pass – 29.8 in 2015/16 and 27.9 last season – are hugely impressive and far superior to new team-mate Anthony Knockaert. Indeed, that puts Gross just ahead of big-hitters Kevin De Bruyne (28), Christian Eriksen (28.3) and Mesut Ozil (28.5) in the previous domestic campaign.

Last season’s Championship Player of the Year, Seagulls right winger Knockaert – who racked up 15 goals and eight assists from his role on the right – is likely to garner some pre-season attention. Yet an average of 40.5 minutes per key pass in 2016/17 underlines just why Hughton has looked to boost his creative options. All the more so when you consider that fellow wide man Jiri Skalak was second for key passes, providing 39 in 31 outings.

Likely to come in around the 5.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League, Gross certainly has the quality to emerge as a creative force to be reckoned with for Hughton’s side.

But six goals from 121 efforts on goal over his two years in the Bundesliga is a concern, particularly as 87 of those arrived from outside the box, underlining his penchant for long-range efforts.

But if he can settle in quickly and offer a favourable opening set of fixtures, Gross has the quality to rival Knockaert as the man most likely among the promoted contingent.

          Ox (and Livermore from Saturday)
Not yet convinced by Dier, Stones, Trippier (defensively), Sterling. Cahill getting old. Jones had a reasonable game but I'm not a great fan, for all his Duncan Edwards like attributes.

Defensive organisation is a problem. We need to play 3 at the back with 2 defensive midfielders like Chelsea and Spurs. We do not have good quality defenders like Campbell, Ferdinand, Terry anymore. We don't have top class central midfielders either.

      Butland
      Dier Stones Cahill
      Walker Henderson ????? Rose
      Lallana Alli
      Kane

We need a physical beast next to Henderson - I was impressed by Onomah in the U20 WC, but he is not ready yet.

If Southgate had played Stephens Keane or Gibson instead of Jones we may have learnt more.It was a friendly at the end of the day. What could he have learnt from playing Walker at left back instead of Creswell for instance? Id love to see Southgate do well and I hate to criticise but I wasn't impressed at all.

They just need conditioning for a hour a day by hypnosis delivered by a VR headset to give them a winning attitude. It's not simply about being second fiddle to foreign players in their teams. They are important to their respective teams and some of them are very good players. They just need some kind of intervention. So let's just pray we find alien intelligence first.

There is a mentality issue. For some reason England players are afraid of failure as opposed to imagining the glory of being the 'man'. They can't seem to imagine what it is like to be on the back page as a hero, raking in the cash on image rights for being the 'man' etc.

Leadership is hugely lacking. You look at that side and who is the experience or the authority which is calming things down or providing a direction to the younger lads. Where's the Adams or the Shearer.

So which clubs are we expecting to rotate home and away fixtures perfectly next season ? With only one team in the North East, one in Birmingham and three on the South Coast it's far from obvious.

    I'm thinking something like

    City and United
    Liverpool and Everton
    Spurs and Arsenal
    West Ham and Palace
    Chelsea and Watford
    Southampton and Brighton
    Swansea and Bournemouth
    WBA and Leicester
    Stoke and Huddersfeild or Burnley
    Newcastle and Huddersfeild or Burnley

Won't the introduction of more positions eg wing back lead to a couple of really cheap opp players who end up becoming the enablers in order to afford even more big hitters and lead to template teams . Players get moved out of position alot eg Coleman , Bale , Fellaini surely this will just increase with more positions ? . If FPL aren't prepared to change positions on a week to week basis it will probably end up being a complete waste of time as managers change their formations throughout the season .

Aren't there games already out there that reward players for tackles, through passes etc . I don't understand why people don't try playing these games rather than changing fpl to be like those games . I think they would have to drastically revamp the bonus points system and the way in which points are scored in order to make the likes of Kante become viable options . Would the likes of Ramsey and Yaya end up becoming essential since they could pick up attacking and defensive points ?

Finally form , fixtures , statistics , the desire to protect rank and lazy people will see the formation of a template regardless of how many changes they make to the game and how many options become available .

    Tl;dr
Stop blaming the game because you can't pick the right captain .
Stop making excuses for your daft punts/decisions
I seem to have become quite cynical . I blame Epic Fail

I think there should be BPs for special awards, eg.

      3 points for MOTM
      2 points for most CBIs
1 point for highest passing completion

      meh something like this

I've always said that the beauty of FPL is it's simplicity, it's why no other PL fantasy games come close to having so many players worldwide. Simple game for simple fans. Anything niche and you lose the masses.

I'm not completely sure why people are so keen to 'be able' to pick players like Kante. Yeah he's great, so what. FPL is a simple and successful format; it should be about celebrating goals, assists and clean sheets - not checking stats every five minutes to see who has made enough tackles to get another point.

The belief that everyone has the same team and if they own different players to everyone else they will some how magically become good at fpl .

I was right with you until the bizarre tl;dr section. WTF was that about??

The FPL game can stay simple. Imagine midfielders scoring points according to whether they have been classed (prior to the season) as wingbacks/defensive mids or attacking mids. Yes there will be the odd player classed incorrectly but we actually like that about the game now, so not a problem.

Points scoring doesn't have to be based on tackles, clearances and interceptions etc., it can be exactly as it is now, but give DM's 2 for a CS and maybe 6 for a goal.

West Ham are also planning a move for 30-year-old Giroud, who has said he will not be happy with limited playing time next season. (London Evening Standard)

Giroud playing week-in week-out? Yes, please!

Lol, how can you even believe a rumor like this? Giroud will not be happy and will leave in all likelihood, but West Ham is the last place he'll end up.

Agreed. He could be great at West Ham. They are underperforming, could compete with Everton if they get their act together and with Giroud. Though relegation is always a possibility too. I think Giroud has higher aspirations and esteem though and would settle for Everton as a minimum. If not Everton I think it's more likely he stays and tries to prove himself at Arsenal or move to another league. Depends if Arsenal sign anyone. He'll probably stay and then Arsenal sign Mbappe on the last day!

Leicester have offered £16.5m for Hull defender Harry Maguire, with the 24-year-old valued at £20m. (Daily Mail)

Will Sir Harry be a good option at Leciester?

    Will he stay at £4.5m?

West Brom have begun talks to sign former Chelsea and England captain John Terry, joining Aston Villa in the battle for the 36-year-old centre-back. (Sky Sports)

Orange is the new black. John Terry is the new Gareth McAuley.

At least 6 set piece goals from JT in a West Brom shirt?

Why the hell would JT go to Villa. Crazy talk when you could go to a proper club or abroad

Unless they gave hima chance to be player manager or something if he wanted that
