Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Debut goals for Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette and Everton’s Wayne Rooney help their new clubs to pre-season wins, while the proposed move of Gylfi Sigurdsson to Goodison Park gathers pace.

Here’s the notes from yesterday’s action.

Sydney FC 0 Arsenal 2

Record signing Alexandre Lacazette marked his Arsenal debut with a goal as the Gunners strolled to victory in Sydney.

The French striker coolly converted Alex Iwobi’s pass after coming on for Danny Welbeck, who had earlier had a penalty saved.

Skipper Per Mertesacker opened the scoring with an early strike in a match dominated by Arsenal, with teenager Reiss Nelson catching the eye at right wing-back in his first senior start for the club.

Significantly, Arsene Wenger stuck with the 3-4-2-1 formation he adopted towards the end of last season, providing further confirmation that this system will be retained.

It meant that another summer recruit, Sead Kolasinac, made his debut on the left of the three-man defence.

The Bosnian international made a number of defensive interceptions and surging forward runs, underlining his suitability to replace Nacho Monreal in that role.

Indeed, Kolasinac’s versatility means that we cannot be certain on Wenger’s plans. While he boasts a stronger end product than Nacho Monreal at wing-back, his strength may yet see him push for a berth in the back three with the Spaniard retained out wide.

It was Lacazette who grabbed the headlines, doing enough in his brief time on the pitch to please the 26.4% of Fantasy managers who have splashed out 10.5 on the striker, with Arsenal’s generous opening schedule (at home at least) helping to justify the outlay.

Handing Lacazeete a central support berth behind fellow sub Olivier Giroud, Wenger was certainly happy with his new man’s debut goal.

β€œIt is important for him to get that (first goal) off his shoulders because you expect to score if you are a striker.”

Arsenal have taken a 25-man squad on their tour of Australia and China, but Alexis Sanchez is not in it. He and Shkodran Mustafi have been given extra time off after the Confederations Cup, with the Chilean still consistently linked with a move away from north London.

Jack Wilshere, the injured Gabriel, Kieran Gibbs, Mathieu Debuchy, Carl Jenkinson and Wojciech Szczesny have all also been left at home.

Arsenal XI:Cech (Martinez 46); Bielik (Nketiah 68), Mertesacker (Naitland-Miles 68), Kolasinac (Monreal 68); Coquelin (Xhaka 68), Willock (Elneny 68); Nelson (Oxlade-Chamberlain 68), Ozil (Iwobi 68), Walcott (Giroud 68), Bramall (Malen 68); Welbeck (Lacazette 68).

Gor Mahia FC 1 Everton 2

Wayne Rooney’s first start of his second spell at Everton was lit up by a superb long-range strike in Africa.

The forward’s 7.5 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) has persuaded 17.5% of managers to put him in their early team squads, with his potential for mid-price value seemingly trumping the Toffees’ brutal start to the campaign. Everton faces daunting trips to Chelsea and both Manchester sides, as well as a visit from Spurs, before September is done.

Ademola Lookman, playing out wide as part of a 4-3-2-1 formation, set up Rooney with some smart work on the left and the former Manchester United man, employed as a lone striker, lashed home from outside the area.

Manager Ronald Koeman handed new signing Davy Klaasen his debut, the Dutch international forming a midfield trio with James McCarthy and Morgan Schneiderlin, while Aaron Lennon started on the opposite flank to Lookman.

But that midfield looks almost certain to change again, with reports in the local media suggesting it is only a matter of time before Everton sign Swansea City talisman Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The Icelander did not travel with the club as they set off on their US tour, and Swans coach Paul Clement seems resigned to losing their star man.

“We had that situation with Jack Cork. In the summer there was no thought of moving Jack on but it got to a point when another club came in with a really good offer. That might end up being the case with Gylfi. We don’t know yet.”

Koeman changed the entire team for the second half, with new signing Michael Keane coming into the heart of the defence alongside Mo Besic, as Kieran Dowell netted the winner from a Tom Davies pass.

Notably, Jonjoe Kenny claimed the right-back berth for the Toffees in the first-hallf, with Matt Pennington replacing him at the break. Mason Holgate was not included the squad following his England U21 exertions.

New arrivals Jordan Pickford and Sandro Ramirez have also been given extended time off and did not travel to Tanzania, while Ross Barkley – who is injured with a groin problem – was also left at home as a move away from Goodison continues to be on the cards.

Everton XI First half: Stekelenburg; Kenny, Williams, Jagielka, Connolly; Schneiderlin, McCarthy, Klaassen; Lennon, Lookman; Rooney.

Everton XI Second half:Hewelt; Pennington, Baines, Keane, Besic; Barry, Gana, Davies; Dowell, Mirallas; Calvert-Lewin.

I don't think that stat means a thing. He's had a summer of rest for once, and he should be sharp. The bigger issue could be the new stadium, but even that isn't really enough to dissuade me. He scored almost a goal per game last year - he'll come good.

It shouldn't. Wembley factor is a possible concern however. Again, I doubt it'll have that much of an impact, but it's possible.

I wasn't intrested in him at the start of last season because he looked so flat in the Euro's, however the way he finished last season, I think he'll start a lot more confidently.

      Dele/Sane/Pedro/RLC (Mooy)
      Kaku/Lacazette/Firmino

    Repost as bottomed as always

I want to be brave and gamble 10.5 on Jesus but he only got starts when City had nothing left to play for and everyone else was pretty much burnt out from a long season and if I recall correctly, he was on the wing.

Someone convince me he's worth getting. I keep thinking Silva arrival makes it even less likely he starts now too. 10.5 seems a lot for this risk.

How will the City attack line up?

Nobody knows - and distrust anyone who says otherwise. I'm not even sure preseason is going to be that useful as a guide, honestly.

Pep will do what Pep wants to do, which is rotate players in those attacking midfield spots. Of the big names, I think KdB is probably the most nailed for gametime, followed by Jesus. But it's a toss-up right now.

    Hennessey

    Lukaku / Lacazette / Defoe

With Hazard likely to be injured for the start of the season, there's a lot of interest in Pedro (8m) and Willian (7m) as fantasy prospects, particularly as they play Burnley at home in GW1.

Last season, Pedro or Willian generally played on the right (it was more often Pedro after they switched to three at the back), with Hazard permanently stationed on the left. In the two gameweeks that Hazard missed last season, Pedro and Willian both started, and they should be in line for guaranteed minutes until the Belgian returns.

I've had a look at how both players have fared when starting with and without Hazard in the last two seasons, since Pedro joined Chelsea. I took all competitions into account, to try and give a decent sample size. Many fantasy managers are expecting Pedro or Willian to step up in Hazard's absence, so let's see whether that has been the case up to now.

    16/17:
Pedro with Hazard - 26 starts, 9 goals (0.35 per game), 7 assists (0.27 per game), 30.2% goal involvement
Pedro without Hazard - 7 starts, 3 goals (0.43 per game), 2 assists (0.29 per game), 22.7% goal involvement

Willian with Hazard - 15 starts, 5 goals (0.33 per game), 3 assists (0.20 per game), 23.5% goal involvement
Willian without Hazard - 6 starts, 5 goals (0.83 per game), 1 assist (0.17 per game), 37.5% goal involvement

    15/16:
Pedro with Hazard - 18 starts, 4 goals (0.22 per game), 2 assists (0.11 per game), 18.8% goal involvement
Pedro without Hazard - 12 starts, 3 goals (0.25 per game), 0 assists (0.00 per game), 15.8% goal involvement

Willian with Hazard - 29 starts, 7 goals (0.24 per game), 4 assists (0.14 per game), 22.9% goal involvement
Willian without Hazard - 15 starts, 3 goals (0.20 per game), 6 assists (0.40 per game), 39.1% goal involvement

    Last Two Seasons:
Pedro with Hazard - 44 starts, 13 goals (0.30 per game), 9 assists (0.20 per game), 25.9% goal involvement
Pedro without Hazard - 19 starts, 5 goals (0.26 per game), 2 assists (0.11 per game), 17.1% goal involvement

Willian with Hazard - 44 starts, 12 goals (0.27 per game), 7 assists (0.16 per game), 23.2% goal involvement
Willian without Hazard - 21 starts, 8 goals (0.38 per game), 7 assists (0.33 per game), 38.5% goal involvement

To me, the numbers suggest that whilst Pedro actually suffered a slight downturn in output in Hazard's absence, Willian took the opportunity to become Chelsea's main man in those matches. It's also worth noting that he took Chelsea's penalty in the FA Cup Semi-Final with Hazard and Costa on the bench. Costa missed the only penalty he has taken under Conte, against Liverpool in GW23. For 7m, I think that he's an excellent short-term option. However, once Hazard returns, Pedro seems to be the likelier starter, based on last season.

Awesome work, Ludo! I love this piece of analysis.

Willian has been a staple in every draft I've done - he's just too tempting for those opening pre-WC weeks. I'd always felt that he stepped up when Hazard was out, but it's nice to see some cold, hard numbers to confirm that impression!

Great work! I guess the only note of caution is that, by using the stats from all competitions, quite a few of the ones with 'Willian without Hazard' may have been against weaker cup opponents and so may be skewing his stats slightly.

      1. Ludo
        • 10 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

If you take away cup games against lower-league opposition, but keep those against Premier League teams, as well as Champions League matches, this is how it looks over the last two seasons:

Pedro with Hazard - 43 starts, 12 goals (0.28 per game), 9 assists (0.21 per game), 25.3% goal involvement
Pedro without Hazard - 15 starts, 2 goals (0.13 per game), 0 assists (0.00 per game), 7.1% goal involvement

Willian with Hazard - 43 starts, 12 goals (0.28 per game), 6 assists (0.14 per game), 22.5% goal involvement
Willian without Hazard - 18 starts, 6 goals (0.33 per game), 7 assists (0.39 per game), 44.8% goal involvement

That suggests that Pedro was the one whose stats without Hazard were skewed by playing weaker cup opponents, with Willian's holding up very well.

Hi Diesel. I prefer Lindelof instead of DDG. I like Begovic as a 4,5 GK option. Trippier instead of Monreal too, because he is a true bargain. Prefer Lukaku to Aguero with those fixtures and I think he will fit perfectly into that Utd team.

Thanks. Lot of choices. Have been playing with options you suggest. I started with Lukaku, Foster / Fabianski rotation and Lindelof.

I just don't trust WBA and have a feeling that Pogba will be on penalties which will reduce Lukaku's output. I will monitor Lindelof and Loftus-Cheek. I don't like picking players who haven't played lots of PL games before unless they are a stud (e.g. Neymar, Messi ilk)

    Who would you rather have?

    A) Milner & Firmino in a 4-3-3
    B) Redmond & Firmino in 3-4-3
    C) Yedlin/RLC & Jesus in 4-3-3 / 3-4-3

A at the moment. But if Milner gets replaced at LB then B.

I know this is always a risky idea incase of injuries but im thinking of having

    Rooney (W1)
    Then change to Gayle (W2)

No love for King at 7.5 vs Defoe at 8.0? I can see them being good for each other and not a big points gap between them come season end.

I reckon Defoe is worth the extra 0.5m for his pens.

      Price.

If you want Kane and one other premium striker like Jesus, Kun, Kaku, Lacazette then you can't really afford 7.5-8m for a 3rd striker.

I think they'll both do well but I don't have room for them in my team.

Can't look past Trippier, Alli or Kane. So looks like I'll have triple Spurs lol

    Foster Myhill
    Lindelof Trippier Cedric Mee 4.0
    Mane Pedro Lanzini Knockaert 4.5
    Kane Lukaku Defoe

Solid team. Keep an eye on Mane's fitness. Recommend Carrol or Loftus Cheek for 5th midfield.

Similarly, I'm not sure that Ramsey necessarily "covers" potential hauls from Sanchez and Lacazette...

Unlikely to be a regular starter. Can see him being a great option one day, not yet though. See how pre season goes.

Days begging them to release the game; weeks of stress putting together a team.

    Foster / Begovic
    Lindelof, Cedric, Daniels (Naughton, 4.0)
    KDB, Pogba, Salah, RLC (Atsu)
    Kane, Rooney, Lacazette.

First time in so many years the gunners finished below 4th.

With no UCL i just think sanchez will be fully concentrated to win the league.

IF he stays, first name on my teamsheet.
