The third round of the FA cup was gearing up to be an exceptionally quiet one for disciplinary matters – until Sunday’s events at the Etihad stadium. Fortunately for this writer, a combination of Vincent Kompany’s two-footed challenge on Nani and Chris Foy’s interpretation of the “tackle”, resulted in a controversial red card and gave us plenty to discuss…

As summarised in the Scout Notes, the City captain was given the crimson flash just 12-minutes into the game and, pending appeal, he is currently in line for an augmented four match absence (by virtue of his previous red card in Gameweek 10), missing Premier League fixtures in gameweeks 21 and 22 (wig, TOT) as well as both legs of the Carling Cup Semi final against Liverpool.

City’s appeal will be heard prior to Wednesday’s first leg with Liverpool and, with Roberto Mancini confident of a reprieve, that could yet see Kompany available for the trip to Wigan this weekend. Many Fantasy Premier League managers aren’t taking any chances though – already sales of the top ranked FPL defender have been flooding through, with over 28,000 transfers out so far in the Gameweek.

In addition to the headline maker, there were also yellow cards on Sunday for two men on our Suspension Tightrope widget, as both Chelsea defender John Terry and Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole boosted their tallies with bookings in the wins over Portsmouth and Peterborough respectively. Terry now sits tied with Blackburn’s Jason Lowe at the top of the bad boy list with eight bookings, potentially just a couple of games from a two-match ban. Cattermole meanwhile, nestles in just behind with seven – alongside the familiar faces of recently banned Gary Caldwell and the currently banned Joey Barton. Talking of Barton, as Tweeted earlier today, he will now miss just one league game for Rangers – this weekend’s trip to his former club Newcastle. Barton will make his return in Gameweek 22, having served the final match of his three-match ban in the FA Cup replay with MK Dons on Tuesday next week.

There’s one last nugget of disciplinary news to round up from the last week. Following an investigation on the grounds of mistaken identity, the yellow card shown to Thomas Vermaelen in the New Years Eve defeat of QPR has now been reassigned to his fellow centre-back, Laurent Koscielny. Unfortunately for Fantasy owners of the Belgian (and luckily for the French fanciers), the FPL Gameweek has long since closed so the erroneous booking will still stand. However, neither are in any immediate danger of accumulating enough yellows for a ban, with Koscielny now on four and Vermaelen on two.

GAMEWEEK 21 BANS

  • Luis Suàrez (LIV) – FA charge (fourth of 8 matches)
  • Vincent Kompany (MCI) – 1 Red for serious foul play (second of 4 matches)
  • Joey Barton (QPR) – 1 Red for serious foul play (second of 3 matches)

    Bale Dempsey Gerrard Walters Sessegnon
    RVP Aguero Yak

    a) i know cheap defense but i will only need to play richards and two alongside which i am confident i can do without gambling too much

    b) I know I have Gerrard in my team...will make way for Silva after 3 gwks for fulham H. Taking a risk here, wish me luck.

    c) I like my front 8 a lot, will be tough to bench one i know but itll be between sess/walters/yak

Seriously dont need 3 11+ mill strikers. Downgrade Aguero to Yakubu or Sturridge. and simply upgrade your whole team.

How much do u expect Aguero to outscore Yak by. I dont think that much.

I can see upgrades for at least 5 of your players.

your choice. 5 better players or 5 average player. For a striker who wont score much over a budget striker.

I disagree...the big guns are 11+ because they consistently score double figure scores.

I would keep the three big guns at the front until Ba returns, you will see much better returns from Rooney and Augero then the Fat Yak.

A good team. Things to take into consideration:

Is it really worth investing in City before Kompany gets back to cement the defense? Wouldn't it be better with Jones against Bolton, if you want someone in that price category? Or simply keep Skrtel, downgrade Richards for time being to Senderos / Kelly from Fullham, as they have solid fixtures and good clean sheet history? This would free up your bank to shuffle around in midfield. Walters / Sessegnon is a strong combo, where you could rotate Walters and Yak depending on home clashes (Walters is at home, [only] at home [stadium] :P). Or, you could get Dempsey / Mcclean, also a commendable option. But this makes the team less of a rotational one.

Possible alternative offense: Van Persie / Aguero / Yakubu

thanks mate, yeah hadn't given too much thought to the city def without kompany, cheers.
richards to senderos frees up cash to upgrade valencia to nani, but valencia's been grabing more points recently.
am thinking of going aguero rooney yak this week then aguero to van persie from next week.
so many options in midfield though.

Yup, it's giving me a headache. 😛 Many options with a lot of potential - the question is: which is most likely to bring in the most points?

I think Valencia is a better option than Nani, unless you've had him for a long time. I've done the change, but lost 0.7 million in doing so...

Funny you mention getting rid of RvP - I want to do that badly too! The only thing stopping me is knowing Wellbeck will pair up with Rooney, and he generally seems to 'steal' some of Ronney's goals and assists. Could be a possible differential ... but since I'm not willing to take that chance, I stick with RvP and Aguero. Seems safer.

ok, here's where i'm now at:

            vorm krul

            skrtel jones williamson shotton senderos

            bale sess silva valencia ben-arfa

            yak aguero rooney

ben arfa really only in for this week, will see how he does
have 2.0 in bank. is there much between sess and dempsey?
worth upgrading yak but who to? dzeko never nailed on. might just stick with yak till ba comes back and has recovered from ACON.
oh and yeah, i also had nani from the start and am now switching him to valencia

Not worth upgrading to Sturridge, Imo. If you upgrade, you should upgrade to a differential:

Bellamy next three fixtures, or Wellbeck. If not, stick with Yak, which is probably the safest and best thing to do.

There's 2.1 between Sess and Dempsey, and Dempsey does have a lot better fixtures. So, that could be an option, yes. 😉

Word of advice: never get Dzeko unless Aguero or Balo gets injured. Can be a nightmare having a player who gets subbed on in the 70th minut.

        Mignolet, Santon, Kelly, McClean

Taking fixtures and form into consideration after many days of consideration i think im close fingers crossed.

          Yo Two Clips,

          Thanks for the shout, mate!

          1. Not a fan of Yak either, he does seem a little bit like Moses and Nani. Sturridge so far has been much more consistent, but there are three factors why I choose Yak:

          A) His injury. You never know how this will affect his game. Can go either way.
          B) At least for me, the 1.4 million left - at least for me - really helps my overall team.
          C) Blackburn genereally scores quite a lot, and Yakubu is Blackburn's Ba - most things go through him. Add that to the fact they're starting to fight for their survival in Premier League, and I think you'll see their claws starting to come out, and Yakubu maybe getting even more consistent.

          2. Now, as for the rest of your team:

Goalkeepers: rotates well, much for the money. 7.5/10
Defense: simply excellent. Maybe too good. Have you had Enrique a long time? If so, keep him; if not, get in Skrtl. Ekotto is brilliant for the next gameweek. Personally, though, I'd improve my goalkeepers before getting Richards. Since you didn't have Vorm, I recommend Krul-Mignolet: they never have homegames the same gameweek, and good fixtures. You have a defense that can do without City to at least gameweek 24. When you hit gameweek 22, you can upgrade Ekotto to Hangeland, who have great homegames from GW22-23. When you hit 24, you dump Hangeland in favour of your favourite City defender.

          For instance: GW21

          Krul / Mignolet
          Skrtl, Assou, Santon (Kelly, Shotton)

          GW22
          Krul / Mignolet
          Skrtl, Hangeland, Shotton (Santon, Kelly)

          GM23
          Krul / Mignolet
          Skrtl, Hangeland, Williamson (Shotton, Kelly)

          GM24
          Krul / Mignolet
Kompany, Shotton, Santon (Kelly, Caulker in - by this time Swansea fixtures look great)

Voila. Zero hits, upgraded goalkeepers, and a defense fully rotatable.

          3. Would be afraid of touching your offense and midfield. It's that good. The only significant problem is the lack of rotation it seems to give. With Walters / Sess / Yak you could do Walters at every homegame (every homegame until GW 27 are great), Sess at the rest, and when Yak has bad fixtures - five on the mid. But, I probably prefer your offense over that alternative. 😉

I came across this site not that long ago and found a lot of you have some pretty good insights. I was wondering what your opinion on my team is and whether you think i should downgrade an outfield player in order to upgrade my second goalie. Much appreciated.

    Vorm
    J. Evans, Richards, Assou-Ekotto
    Silva, Bale, Nani, Dempsey
    Aguero, RVP, Helguson

might be worth it. vorm doesn't have great fixtures, so would be good to have someone to rotate him with. Hilario just won't get the gametime.

only change to free up cash might be helguson to graham who is now only 4.7 and starting to look good for swansea
you could then get sorenson for 4.4 with eth .5 you make

      Team worth 110?

Looks extremely strong. Would fix the backline, though. Evans out for Senderos or Caulker, and Richards out for Skrtl until Kompany gets back (Liverpool has 3 great fixtures coming up), and you have one hell of a team.

      Gameweek 21:

Ekotto - Skrtl - Santon (Williams if you want more certainty)
      Silva - Bale - Nani - Dempsey
      Aguero - RVP - Helguson

      1 sub: Mcclean
      2 sub: Senderos
      3: sub Caulker

Oh, and I almost forgot. That extra cash will help you goalkeeper problem for the next fixture with Hilario -> Kenny / Soerensen

        Goalkeeper gameweek 21:

        Kenny / Vorm

        Goalkeeper 22:

        Vorm / Soerensen

        Gameweek 22:

        Skrtl - Shotton - Senderos
        Silva - Bale - Mclean - Nani - Dempsey
        Aguero - RvP

Also im thinking of swapping out aguero for bellamy (depending how he does against stoke) for gw22 then back again afterwards.

Same here. People barely realize Nani's been FPL's proven potential. Keeping too - considering he's my only United attacking player.

McClean is AWESOME! Full of energy, pace, great on the ball, sweet crosser. Can't see him being displaced from the starting 11 - potential bargain! Only if he could keep his consistency, MON will be a legend come season's end.

Looking to rotate Moses & McClean from GW22 - scraping the barrel but gives me lot of flexibility elsewhere.

All these new signings and fresh injuries are worth keeping the W/C till the very end of the deadline.

                  Good call.

I like that idea but I doubt I'd transfer any player in until he's got some form kicking in & has a sealed spot in the starting 11. Usually takes a fortnight to figure that out. As most transfers take place around deadline day, it'd be risky to get any of them in too soon.

you should really rate someone elses team first before just jumping in..

anyway looks alright.. Not sure how City will go with no Komps. Should hold out vs Wigan. I like Cabaye but would prefer if Tiote was playing. Fwds fine

downgrade bae. either on your wc or soon because spurs have a tough run of fixtures ahead and a cheaper defender (say shotton) would allow you to upgrade the yak or one of your mids

Rooney could be a good differential to Aguero next few weeks. looks pretty standard. Could go for 1 more decent midfielder..

alot of members going with 1 or 2 of the 5-6 million defensive players. you could drop smallings to an Evans or a Shotton

downgrade one or more of krul, smalling, and rooney (to aguero) in order to upgrade a midfileder

thoughts on this potential wildcard team? planning on wildcarding next week unless rises force me to use it early

    vorm, kenny
    richards, enrique, simpson, brown, kelly
    silva, bale, dempsey, walters, sess
    rvp, aguero, sturridge

.1 in the bank if I did it now.
problems/doubts I have: unsure about kenny, is lack of stoke defense a problem? not quite enough to get ba in for sturridge upon return unless he drops .3

right now 108.3 with .5 in the bank though not sure what my selling value is.
brought sess in for osman before the rise so just hoping that aguero, dempsey, richards and kelly dont rise before I use the wc

what value do you have? and have you used your wc yet?

Forget about ba for the moment. You will anyways be forced to change a player because of injury/suspension by then.
As of now, I would recommend a stoke defender, and yes drop kenny.
      Midfield and Attack looks terrific.

        good point.
which stoke defender and who to get rid of? shotton in for brown?
and I want to drop kenny but he has pretty good rotation with vorm and not sure who I could bring in for him. suggestions?
