The third round of the FA cup was gearing up to be an exceptionally quiet one for disciplinary matters – until Sunday’s events at the Etihad stadium. Fortunately for this writer, a combination of Vincent Kompany’s two-footed challenge on Nani and Chris Foy’s interpretation of the “tackle”, resulted in a controversial red card and gave us plenty to discuss…

As summarised in the Scout Notes, the City captain was given the crimson flash just 12-minutes into the game and, pending appeal, he is currently in line for an augmented four match absence (by virtue of his previous red card in Gameweek 10), missing Premier League fixtures in gameweeks 21 and 22 (wig, TOT) as well as both legs of the Carling Cup Semi final against Liverpool.

City’s appeal will be heard prior to Wednesday’s first leg with Liverpool and, with Roberto Mancini confident of a reprieve, that could yet see Kompany available for the trip to Wigan this weekend. Many Fantasy Premier League managers aren’t taking any chances though – already sales of the top ranked FPL defender have been flooding through, with over 28,000 transfers out so far in the Gameweek.

In addition to the headline maker, there were also yellow cards on Sunday for two men on our Suspension Tightrope widget, as both Chelsea defender John Terry and Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole boosted their tallies with bookings in the wins over Portsmouth and Peterborough respectively. Terry now sits tied with Blackburn’s Jason Lowe at the top of the bad boy list with eight bookings, potentially just a couple of games from a two-match ban. Cattermole meanwhile, nestles in just behind with seven – alongside the familiar faces of recently banned Gary Caldwell and the currently banned Joey Barton. Talking of Barton, as Tweeted earlier today, he will now miss just one league game for Rangers – this weekend’s trip to his former club Newcastle. Barton will make his return in Gameweek 22, having served the final match of his three-match ban in the FA Cup replay with MK Dons on Tuesday next week.

There’s one last nugget of disciplinary news to round up from the last week. Following an investigation on the grounds of mistaken identity, the yellow card shown to Thomas Vermaelen in the New Years Eve defeat of QPR has now been reassigned to his fellow centre-back, Laurent Koscielny. Unfortunately for Fantasy owners of the Belgian (and luckily for the French fanciers), the FPL Gameweek has long since closed so the erroneous booking will still stand. However, neither are in any immediate danger of accumulating enough yellows for a ban, with Koscielny now on four and Vermaelen on two.

GAMEWEEK 21 BANS

  • Luis Suàrez (LIV) – FA charge (fourth of 8 matches)
  • Vincent Kompany (MCI) – 1 Red for serious foul play (second of 4 matches)
  • Joey Barton (QPR) – 1 Red for serious foul play (second of 3 matches)

mata/moses are the two on teams in the top half of the league in terms of upcoming fixture difficulty.

valencia/sess are the men on form.

      coin toss.

if you want a more detailed analysis of the form of valencia/mata/sess, see:

seriously, though, you'll need braces from your front 3 every week to offset the risk you're taking with up to SIX punts in def/mid.

would rethink one of rooney/aguero, probably dropping aguero as you have silva.

or do the unthinkable and replace RVP with henry.

        how is it six punts?

i fancy rooney and MAN UTD to go on a run now..january is when man utd hit form and rooney looked realy good against city.
man city will respond after that loss and they might give wigan a hiding..aguero looks a must.
        RVP is well RVP!!

im thinking of surman(who i already have) instead of barfa..which would give me 1.0m more to spend on my defense

You really going without Bale? Really? I like the Ramires move but I would move things around to accommodate Bale in 5* luxury if I were you!

Do you have those keepers now? If so I'd keep them too.

Not sure if Evans is nailed on to be honest, I can see us starting the same back four as we did against City for a little while now...

      The problem you've got is...

There are loads of great value forwards in the FLP this year, and very few great value mids. Drop one of your forwards to Sturridge or Yak and get Bale in I reckon

To be honest mate there is not much to argue with here. It's obviously top heavy but your defence is very decent considering (looks like you have an awesome overall team value).

Rooney may not be worth it though with United's fixtures.

You may have to rethink Kompany due to the ban also. Congrats for joining the mavericks on the Moses-McClean rotation in midfield.

      TY all!!!
Allways good to read comments from proven value member of FFS 😉

Fratboy - I want to send Bale out because of fixtures... He has horrible fixtures, and I don't know if he will keep his form with those fixtures... I remember last season he scoring good for 3 gws and then 2 2 2 2 .... unlike his mate VDV... But I might be wrong this year...
As to the keepers, i have them since Gw2 or 3, so I will keep them....they are cheap and I think they are enough...would love to have hart, but ain't got the money...
Evans is a gamble, but might get me some points in the easy fixtures... i hope..

JFR - RVP ( is a season keeper imo (i know how much people hate this) ; Aguero (look as city fixtures) ; Rooney (he will explode soon, bad fixtures to him mean nothing, just look at the begginging of the seaosn)

Impressve Tackle - I'm keeping Kompany because I have him since the begginig of the season, and I'm sure I will want him back, and woun't be able to afford it if I sell... its only two gws... Rooney (read what I wrote to JFR)

thank you all for your review, much apreciated!

Just wrote this in the morning out of true passion:

    ODE TO KING HENRY

An Hour Of Despair and Murmur, Shuffling in the Seats
    The Same old Feeling.
He Walks in, Arsene's Words in His Ears
    The Applause Begins.
Almighty gets Ready to script the Script
    The Staue is There..

The First Touch, and U draw Breath.
    Time Stands Still..
He Waits ,He Curls it then
Like a Rainbow Arc meeting his Old Love
    The Net Bulges
    Time Stands Still...

He Screams, You get up from your Seat.
    And You Scream Too.
You Dance to the King's Tune.
    The Applause Begins,
    and even He joins in..

    You Drop to the Floor,
You Kneel Down as the Humble Servant
    As the King Stands Tall.

You get save points whether your keeper is good or not, So I would rather have someone like Hennessey or Al Habsi that does a lot of work for the team, even if they dont get a cleansheet.

Defence in A doesn't look much better to me, it's just Skrtel over Smalling isn't it? Not much in that for me.

Main differences seem to be Nani/Sess or Valencia/Dempsey and for that reason, as well as Sturridge, I'd go B. If you don't rate Smalling then pick someone else, plenty of decent 5.0 defs.

the rotating story box at the top gets larger/smaller depending on what story is in the box atm.

they could solve the problem by having all headers for articles be the same size, but probably not at the top of anyone's list of priorities.

wouldn't it be a better idea to get komp/richards though?

I agree with this ... I generally work on the principle that if the GK is cheaper than the defenders that play, and vice versa then they are the ones worth getting too. Don't know if that's the way others work?

e.g. Senderos & Kelly cheaper than Stockdale / Schwarzer

      Richards cheaper than Hart

      Sorenson cheaper than Shawcross/Huth

      Mignolet cheaper than Bardsley/Brown

Santon / Simpson cheaper than Krul

Unless the argument that Richards isn't nailed on holds but ... to be honest, I think he just about is now. Got rotated for 1 game earlier in the season, missed 1 over Christmas with an injury... I think he was given the armband when Kompany went off vs Man Utd so I think he's a big player for them second half of the season.

reply to Fratboy and Doosra from debate on previous page:

Hatem Ben Arfa is only just returning from a serious injury…these injuries can take time to re-model, but he is starting to show the form that Newcastle fans know he is capable of. How many other players possess the touch and vision and wispish movement that produced his goal against Blackburn?

He is extremely well rated in France, where he is heralded as one of the best talents the French possess. He has won 5 Ligue 1 titles. He was signed by Marseille for 11M Euros, where he won another Ligue 1 title.

He possesses a sublime touch and quick feet, which complement intelligent movement, pace, awareness and vision. He is already a great player already and he is starting to get rest-less at Newcastle due to a lack of opportunities. He needs first team football to be picked for the Euros, think about it…Newcastle fans rate him as their best player, if Pardew were to let him leave it would put him under immense pressure and I suspect that Pardew has told him he will get a run in the team with Ba away collecting ACORNS. At 5.4M he is hardly high risk…

Scoring goals from midfield is obviously important,' said Ramires. 'I have been working hard on my finishing in training, but I have also been working on the defensive side of my game as well.

'I have eight goals already this season which is a good return, but I would like to go on and score 15 or maybe even more, that will be important not just for myself but for the team as a whole.'

    Morning all,
My injury worries are racking up would you hit the WC on:
    Vorm
    BAE, Jones*, Enrique
    Nani*, Silva, Bale, Sess
    RVP, Adebayor, Sturridge*
    (Sorenson; Dyer, Simpson*, Hibbert*)
    *Injury or rotation worry

Would go to being something along the lines of:
    Vorm
    Cahill, Richards, Santon
    Bale, Silva, Walter, HBA
    RVP, Rooney, Aguero
    (Sorenson, McClean, Senderos, Caulker)

To wildcard or not to wildcard?

under NO circumstances would i say that your team needs a WC from a injury/rotation POV.

wait until the last minute and then use the WC to take advantage of new players/prospects.

it's often easy to be on the fence about some teams, but yours categorically does not need a WC this week.

especially with jones and nani hosting bolton this week.

WC team for GW23 version ???

Am prob going to wait until gw23 2 play my wc, and this is how it looks right now...

    Vorm - Lindegaard
    Cahill (if/when in Chelsea) - Senderos - Vermaalen - Richards - Simpson
    Bale - Silva - Sess - Walters - Valencia
    RvP - Yak - Sturridge

    ,5 left in the bank
Lindegaard is ofc a gamble, could just stay with Krul (leaving me ,2 in bank)
    Sturridge - Ba possible
Dempsey is a obv choice but dont really think he will outscoure Sess, maybe Walters?
Choice is Walters - Dempsey & Verm - 4,9 defender and im not too happy about that...

    Thoughts?

che have a good run of upcoming fixtures, but 4 of 7 are away, with MUN being one of the home fixtures.

barring discussion of sturridge's knock, you'd have to say that dempsey/sturridge is a better combo. sturridge scores better away from home than at the bridge, whereas all mata's big hauls come at home. so, given the run, you'd have to back sturridge over mata.

then there's dempsey/zamora. dempsey nailed on OOP, zamora is a big ?, of late.

Also, amazed at the number of people considering McClean, a stopgap cheapie, in their WILDCARDS for the rest of the season after what, 2 games? I could understand as a punt BEFORE the wildcard but not AFTER. It's particularly dangerous because changing your fifth mid usually is nowhere near your highest priority too.

I guess people are looking at it like, for 0.4m than Ferguson (aka Mr 1-Point Cameo) you can get someone who has (or so I've heard) looked very impressive when he's played, has nice scoring potential and whose style of of play attracts bonus points.

All that said, he's not in my team 😀

Well yes I see that and neither I nor you would touch Ferguson because he's useless for 0.4m less. But there are a few proven options in the 4.5-5 range including Moses, Gower, Gomez, even Reo-Coker, all of which have a proven record of starting most matches and getting points in some. We'll see haha, I might punt on McClean before WC.

Point taken. I guess people are just excited by the idea of a cheapie mid that might contribute something besides appearance points.

After being burnt by the Gower experience, I've decided to raise my minimum price for mids... chances are the one week a 4.5 guy does something he'll be buried on your bench anyway!

All that said... rather intrigued by Sigurdsson at Swansea. Will be watching veeeeery closely.

Yeah 4.5 mids are so generally useless that you'd want to raise the minimum price, unfortunately the 5-6 bracket is pretty crap atm too with Brunt and Jarvis not in the points and Drenthe being ignored...

I've heard great things about Sigurdsson - prolific in the championship, dead ball specialist? At 5.0 I'm also watching, good shout.

Just a quick check everyone: with some tough SWA fixtures ahead, how strong is the love for Vorm? I have had him ever since GW2 and well pleased with him, but I do not rate very high SWA’s chances for a clean sheet in the next 4 home games (except for NOR) – Ars, Che, Nor, Man C. Things look much more promising only after GW 30 (incl., home game vs Everton). Although till GW 30 there are some decent away fixtures (WBA and Wigan), these can be very tricky. Do you reckon that I should keep him or better not?

Right now, my plan is to use my 2 free transfers, and only 0.7 in the bank, to do this: Vorm (Ruddy) > Krul and Mignolet . This way my team will have keepers with some very decent home fixtures in the next three GWs – GW 21 will be Krul vs Black (the downside is that Black scores in each of their away games), GW 22 and 23 will be Mignolet vs Swa and Nor (the downside is that Gordon may play instead of him). Before GW 24 starts, I will use my WC to possibly change keeper(s) who has more sound fixtures (possibly keep Krul for GW 26 and 27 and introduce either Sorensen, or Schwarzer or Given).

Feel free to rate my plan from 1 to 10 (highest) . Thanks.

GW 21 we're away to blackburn but that's not really the point.

Sounds like a decent enough plan to me - I've had Vorm since GW2, £4.0m and I'll be dumping him with the WC. I think their fixtures toughen considerably and believe the clean sheets will dry up, at least a little. I'm looking at 2 from Sorenson, Mignolet & Krul to rotate but not sure what I'll go with yet.

If you got him in GW2, you will have paid what, 4m? With a current selling price of roughly 4.6?

Ditch him now only to get him back in post-GW30 and you'll likely pay upwards of 5.2... unless you've got cash monies lying around, that's an extra 0.6 you'll have to find from elsewhere, at a time of year when every 0.1 is precious.

Thanks for reading my not-so-short-quick-question 🙂 That's right, I paid for him 4.0 (I just couldn't ignore that he conceeded 4 goals vs ManC, but still got extra points for his saves. Also, I watched the game and I was really impressed by him), so I am looking forward to banking in the profit. If it all goes by plan, by GW30 his price will most likely drop, so this may be the time when I will bring him back.

In GWs 26 and 27, both Krul and Sorenson have 2 consequtive home fixtures. Krul vs Wolves and Sund; Sorenson vs Swa and Nor. This will be a tough one to call, but imo Sorenson is the way ahead.

Mign's fixtures around that time are not as promising (from GW 24 to 29 they only 2 home fixtures vs Arsenal and Liverpool), but with their win vs ManC they seem as a tough nut to crack, especially, at home. After GW 23, It will be too brave for me to keep him in the team. Good luck.

What do you make of this bad boy:

    Vorm / Sorensen

    Richards /Shotton /Santon /Caulker /Senderos

    McClean/ Dempsey/ Silva/ Bale /Ramires

    Aguero /Rooney/ Van Persie

    Zero in the bank 🙂

Looks good, I'm playing around with something similar.

Ramires --> Walters after this GW for me.

Yeah not a bad call that. I think Rooney ( unless my punt really pays off ) will become Sturridge and then Ba eventually and I'll ram some more funds into midfield - Valencia / Mata / Nani etc?

That's badass front 8 but you'll never play McClean, as long as you're cool with that then I am.

Yeah I'm cool with that dude 🙂 There are always random injuries / rest etc He'll play at some point. In the meantime he can rack up some value on my bench.

G - rate him 6 out of 10, mostly because I do not rate high Vorm's chances for a cleanie in the next 9 GWs.
Def - 7. I really like Richards, Senderos, Shotton (OOP, still not sure if he'll play all the time) combination. Not sure about Santon (not a 1st team regular) and Caulker (do not like Swa's fixtures), but at this price this is the best you can possibly get. If you sell Vorm for a cheaper keeper (e.g. Mignolet) you may get some extra money for another def (e.g. Evans).
Mid - 9. If Silva, Dempsey, Bale and Ramires play together in one team they will win the Premiership by themeselves 🙂 (*a note to self* well overstated) Perhaps McClean needs to start more first team appearances before including him in the team. If he does, he will be awesome prospect for his price tag.
For - 10. By the time that Ba returns, these should be the three top scoring Forwards. IMO - the way ahead.

Overall, 8.5, just because I really like your move to put Agu/Roo/RVP in one team 🙂 Nice one and good luck.
